After rewatching this I did pick up on some clues to the compatibility mystery. I noticed that the new controller is called the “cadet premium”. This is noted on the box and also on the back of the controller. My original black controller, upon further review, is not even called a cadet! The back of the controller just refers to it as “retronHD controller for NES”. My guess this is a very early revision before they even came up with the name cadet. However the original box for the retronHD that this came in does, in fact call it a “premium cadet” controller. We may never know the answer but I wanted to include this information!
It's the fact that the earlier versions and some newer ones are molded wrong, and the end that plugs into the console, the pins sit back too far, and the edge sits too far forward. it's supposed to be flush with the end of the pin holes. I bought a new one, and had to shave down the edge for mine to work on my original nes

I wonder if the clear black Cadet controller that comes with the Retron 2 HD will work on the Retron 3 HD. It would be nice to have all 3 controllers in the same color. They really should have included an NES controller with the Retron 3 HD.
Agreed. They should have just charged an extra 20 bucks or so and threw one in. As for the Retron 2 controller I’m not sure, but I would guess it’s fine. This seems to be a pretty isolated incident. I don’t see anyone else really having any controller issues. I think it was probably a first gen release and the kinks probably have long been ironed out.

After all strangely enough the white controller works with this prefix and the black one does not. And these controllers are not old but just new.

There is a SNES to NES adapter in the "Hyperkin Retron 3 HD" and it works. For me the problem is "Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt" with orange adaptor for "Duck Hunt" as it takes about 2 hours for set up for that cartridge.

I found the firmware from random other site for succed. I think hyperkin need more quality control. And... i return 2 squire controller at amazon because x y z doesnt work and my ordiginal work fine into my retron 5....
I don’t own a Retron 5 but from what I understand it’s a very sketchy device. it just dumps the game roms and plays it on an emulator whereas with this everdrive 3 hd console all the systems are “systems on a chip”. meaning that the cartridges actually interact with the system like the real thing. Long story short I would not buy a Retron 5 personally but the decision is yours.
It may has to do with the different pin layouts,for what i do understand is that some us controllers don’t work with pal nes systems and vice versa, it may also has to do with the clock signal of those controllers,mmmm ,now if hyperkin wants to rectify this deal braker situation, then they definitely should include that gray nes controller into it.

I remember the time when I was a kid & my NES worked 100% of the time outside of blowing into a cartridge, & I still have it, & it still works decades later, decades. I bought a Retron 2 HD recently, & was seriously disappointed to the point of feeling scammed; I put it in my recycling bin. I had controllers, not work out the box, video issues, games just freeze, & stop working, my original controllers not compatible either; no excuses, if youre selling retro equipment in 2020 with 30 + year old existing technology, & cant get it working 99.99 % of the time, like Nintendo, & other manufacturers, to me its a scam.
Well said. It’s a damn shame too because it could be a great product if they just tried a little harder. They always fall just short of the finish line with all these clone consoles. I wouldn’t mind spending an extra 50 bucks or so if it just worked right.
All my original controllers are NES-004. I can confirm these work perfectly with the Retron 3 HD. I do not own any “E” versions so I cannot test them, sorry.
Mike I noticed another jamb hypercin, I have a adapter sonic and Knuckles is the cartridge sonic the Hedgehog 2 when I put in the box and sonic and Knuckles over sonic the Hedgehog 2 I had black screen and had to start sonic the Hedgehog 2 Knuckles but nothing happened, I rebooted the console and charge it with the box removed put thought contacts don't reach but still does not start sonic the Hedgehog 2 Knuckles United. I think this is also their joint. It would be good if you had such a Sonic And Knuckles adapter cartridge so that you can make sure that it will work with the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 cartridge at the same time as the retron 3 HD. I have the same prefix as you.
There is. I brought an retron ( black nes color model) & the controller lasted a couple of months. I bought another controller black color. I opened them both to switch the boards. The retron had a cheap board with black drop spot. The newer cadet controller had a better built board compared controller that cam with the retron.

Try using an extension with the controller so it has a different plug directly with the system.

In your NES-004 video without Type E, the console also sees this gamepad.

Yes the adapter does work. However it does not do the expansion audio for games like castlevania 3
