- A light-hearted video about a funny, light-hearted story: My Next Life as a Villainess. I discuss the popular anime and of course talk about the game (visual novel) while unboxing the Limited Edition from Idea Factory.

I hope you have fun watching this video - I certainly had a lot of fun with the material!
Update: added links to 2 reviews in the "Description" below video.
For those of you interested in issues around publishing of anime and visual novel material, you'll notice how much the Japanese entertainment industry clamps down on any coverage of media such as streaming or review videos.
It was a new experience for me, unable to use any of my own gameplay footage.
Please note that any/all such restrictions were outside the purview of the publisher (IFI).
i love this video u made
It's so nice to see even the older generation appreciate anime culture!
Genuinely put a smile on my face in a hard time of my life.
My next life as a villainess!? Omg, Britta, you got excellent taste.
Oh my god, already Liked. I'm going to bookmark this and savor this when I'm awake enough to fully appreciate it, but just ahead of time, I want to tell you how excited I am and how much I'm looking forward to this. This is by far my favorite isekai, as well as On the Verge of Doom, and I asked for this for Christmas. Can't wait to hear you talk about it and watch the unboxing!!!
oh my what a surprise
My Next Life as a Villainess is one of my favorite animes from the isekai genre
so fun and refreshing, wasn't expecting for the visual novel game to be so appealing, I will check it out maybe I can get myself a Christmas present
got me teared up, you honestly made my day you beautiful soul :')
I was really surprised with how much I enjoyed this anime when it came out. I was interested in getting this game! It would be my first otome, but since the anime was fun this sounds good too 😄 After your review I am even more interested now to get it 😊
Sounds like you're a good fit for it!
I was hoping there'd be a video on this game! I watched the first season of the anime in preparation and I fell in love with Catarina and her friends. I'm very glad to have the context of their backstories and relationships now that I have the game.
I've already started playing, but I'm not very far yet. (I'm going for Geordo's route first!) It feels like I'm picking up right where I left off with characters I'm already familiar with and enjoy.
Yes, Geordo was the initial route I picked. 😀
Your channel seriously brings me so much happiness!
Thank you.
Whoa whoa whoa….is that something Dragon Age I spot in the background? 👀👀👀👀
Of course.
Dragons and me.
Huge Dragon Age fan since my early PS3 days with Origin!
Hamefura! Started playing this a few days ago without knowing much about it and I’m really enjoying it so far!
Catarina really is a girl’s girl and I love that she’s voiced which is kind of rare in otome. Thank you for the review!!
I'm such a fan of this series! Thank you for reviewing the game ☺️💕
I liked the anime alot when started, and read the manga adaptation after epi 1 already, and was very fun, since have some differences was good events in different ways, like the Maria love confession at the end.. www
Wow! I was not expecting to find an unboxing of the Hamefura game. I love how you took your time to show the goodies that came with the game. The artbook, in particular, looks really nice!
I knew I could trust your opinion as soon as you said “pirates are always good from my pov, but DRAGONS for me are at the top of the apex. But pirates are pretty high up too.” 😂😂
I'm so glad bakarina has touched your heart!
found out your channel a month ago and it's such a hidden gem, i enjoy the laid back and cozy style of your vids :)
Thank you and welcome!
watching your videos make me so happy!! i love otome games but i don't think ive ever played one where the MC is a villainess :v def will be adding this one to my list
I love the fact you're into anime, gaming and shin megami tensei/persona!❤
Thank you for doing a review! I've been a fan of this anime since it came out and plan to buy this game when i can!
Katarina is such an endearing character and similarly, her love for food makes me love her even more ❤
Love the anime, it is one of my recent favorites! I love the romance aspect, how all her friends are in love with her but she is too obsessed with doom to ever notice. Thank you for talking about it.
I really love this anime!! but I was really disappointed that there are no routes in the game for the female characters (especially Maria) like it didn’t even have to romantic, platonic would have been fine too. The anime and manga focus on their relationships too so I just don’t get why not. Such a missed opportunity tbh
The VN seems to have stuck to a rather traditional model with 5/6 male bachelors.
I love this anime a lot can’t believe there’s gonna be a visual novel game! Thanks for the review! I’m gonna take note of this ❤
This was also my first villainess isekai type series about 2 years ago and I had to pick up this game when I saw it would get a physical release. Didn’t start it quite yet but I will soon for sure.
I really loved your video on this, thank you for the fun and informative time!
As always amazing video, thank you for providing us with such lovely content :)
Thank you for the great content Miss !! I’m looking forward to the next video :)
Britta!! Thank you so much for making this video. It makes me so happy when you cover anime that I’m familiar with!
I wasn’t even considering this game or anime and you are selling me on both! Thanks for the overview!
Yay, I'm glad you enjoyed this one! It's on my wish list, so hopefully I can get it relatively soon. I've read the light novels, and I bought the first issue of the manga when I was in Japan. It's such a fun story. :)
I really enjoyed the anime, but had no idea there's also a game. I'm really glad youtube recommended me this video!
THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE ANIME, im so glad you know about it
I didn't know about the villainess, but I'll still watch your videos
Yessss one of my favourite novel anime
I enjoyed the anime very much, I liked series that take stablished tropes and try to make something different with them. A lot of them are comedies.
J-Novel club is a good service if you like light novels, you get to download the files for the e-books you buy so you don't have to worry about the store going away or something like that. I discovered it while trying to buy the books for Ascendance of a bookworm. First I came across bookwalker which is fine, but does not have that option and your books are tied to their service.
J-Novel club is also publishing some older series like Slayers, Orphen and Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash.
Interesting about J-Novel Club, thanks for feedback!
Unfortunately I'm unable to read on e-devices due to my eye problems (that's why I buy so many manga books!), but I certainly would like to explore more of those slightly older titles.
Oh, I hadn't heard anything about this but it looks pretty good - might pick it up! Also, love your Rain Code Shinigami in the background. I've got one on my shelf, too, haha. :)
I'm actually playing RainCode (finally) now. I posted on Twitter about it but to my surprise there seems little interest in it.
That's a shame! How are you finding it? Personally I really enjoyed it - and the soundtrack is incredible!
I'm having a great time with it - mainly due to the irrepressible Shinigami. 😁
It also feeds my obsessive compulsive loop finding all the clues. 😅
I hadn't watched/played it yet because I thought I would need context to understand it, but if you only need to watch one episode, I know what I'll do today!
Happy Holidays btw!
Thank you - have a great holiday season too!
im so early to this vid:D reminded me i never got around to watching this one!
I had no idea that they made a game about this! I’ll try to pick it up soon…
I hope you enjoy it. I have all but one guy unlocked. I hope you're going to check a few more routes out, I recommend Nicol and Silva.
Big fan of your reviews just rarely comment. Keep being an inspiration. I think you are anyway. Take care
Thank you.
I'm not gonna miss out on the pirate route! 😎
Agreed - Dragons and Pirates almost always guarantee a good story. This is another one i didn't know before
Britta your the best 😍😍
My next life as a villainess is an anime i really enjoyed. It is a really fun take on the otome and isekai gengre. I am not too big inti isekais most of the time, but this one really got me hooked. so i am really happy to actually get a visual novel game for this. Hope people will check it out and enjoy it.
The anime was so well done. I hope the same sense of humour is in the game!
Well, that's ofc exactly what I discuss in my video.😄
I hope you took a few minutes to check it out.
This is a nice variation on the oversaturated isekai genre. Usually if the main character is advertised as a weak pushover, that's gone by chapter two and it turns out he's actually giga super strong all along! Here the main character really is dumb and useless in combat but gets by on being a genuine, kind and charming person.
The light novel is a pleasant read, even if it's a little too obvious that the author didn't expect it to go on for as long as it did and is in a little over his head, as after the first arc the story just meanders a lot and starts to add on more and more new characters instead of further developing the original cast.
There's also a really good spinoff where the MC regains her memories a month before graduation instead of all the way back in her childhood. It's interesting to see how some of the relationships are just too far gone to fix by that point, and instead of instantly befriending everyone she has a hard time just making some of them be neutral to her.
Ah, that's a really interesting insight from the light novel and actually fits with what I have read about the author. I think she posted her novel chapters originally on one of those 'publish your own work' type of sites, and was then discovered (I assume the Japanese media machine has people scouring these sites for talent!).
My favorite isekai is “The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System” a book in which the protagonist wakes up as the villain in a fantasy novel they were complaining about online. What I enjoy the most is that the protagonist is sometimes too worried about what might happen that he doesnt realize how much far he has gone.
OK, this sounds intriguing and very humorous! I'll check it out, thanks.
I have never watched this series, but I always found the premise more interesting than most of the genre. I do like a good Visual Novel, but I don't think this Otome is quite my cup of tea, so that is a good reason to watch the video and hear about what makes it interesting!
I'm not really well versed in otome games, but I've played one on mobile that I find absolutely amazing: "Ikémen Sengoku: Romances Across Time". As the title suggests, the MC is transported to the Sengoku period, and meets the infamous general Nobunaga Oda and his vassals. All of the elegible bachelors are inspired in real people, and as someone who has played about 12 different routes they are all incredibly well written. I suggest you play it in the order they were added to the game, starting with Nobunaga Oda himself, so you slowly unveil the world building that is happening across all of the routes, since there's always new information in all of them. It has a parallel gacha system, where you have to buy certain items to progress in the game, but it is completely doable as a free player (like I did).
Oh, Ikemen! So so popular.
I don't play mobile games any longer; but I do have a copy of the Japanese PS Vita version of Ikemen Sengoku!
Whoa i didn’t even know this was a game!
I didn't know anything about this game until I happened to see this video. I should definitely look a bit deeper into what the game does with the story and characters and figure out if I'd be into playing it.
I loved the first season of the anime, but the second didn't really meet my expectations, as it focused too much on the male love interests.
So I'm cautiously excited and want to know more.
Might be a good idea to check out some reviews, then, to help you? Good luck!
ooh ill have to check this one out! do you have any recommendations for other visual novels (as you mentioned, i love ones with adventure or mystery elements too!)
Hmm ... how about 7'scarlet ? That's very supernatural.
I also really like games that are 50/50 VN and mystery detection, with more gameplay elements than your regular VN. Are you interested in those too?
There's a number of really excellent ones from Spike Chunsoft - like Danganronpa and the Zero Escape series.
Their newest is Master Detective Archives: Rain Code (which I'm playing currently).
There's also AI: The Somnium Files (2 games) which is excellent.
@@Food4Dogs thanks so much !! i cant wait to get into these !!
I enjoyed the first season, but didn't want to continue with the subsequent season and the spin-off manga.
Thanks for the review, ❤
I really like the villainess genre. Ohohoho~
Haven’t picked this up yet, but considering I liked the first season of the anime, first volume of the light novel, and have liked some of the previous otome games Yoshimura Ririka has written for (Cupid Parasite especially), I plan to at some point, though I may try to do play it in Japanese instead of English.
Oh, she's done Cupid Parasite - I haven't played that one yet.
When is britta going to play persona 5 royal??
Prediction on who she romances?? I’m going with Hifume
Ha. It's still some time away. I hope you noticed that I am doing playthroughs of both Ys VIII *and* XCX! That's a heavy load. So - P5R maybe after that.
Britta, you've done it yet again. love your content and please adopt me.
Sorry, adoptions are closed. 😅
you might enjoy code realize or collar x malice if you enjoy visual novels with more intricate plot.
Thank you - I have played *a lot* of visual novels and talked about them extensively, here and on Twitter. Those are two very good VNs.
I just got charade maniacs from the IF shop but I did not get this one I don't know why maybe in terms of tone it wasn't that interesting for me but uhm... if it's sassy and satirical like neptunia for example I may still add it to the order who knows... uhm...
Those two VNs are a very nice contrast - they're very different in tone and style.
I assume you've seen my Charade Maniacs unboxing?
@@Food4Dogs no actually I missed that, I will tho ;)
I've kind of burned out on Hamehura, though it was a bit of a pioneer in the genre. The main thing is that it kind of never lets its endings rest, it's always back to her being doomed in the next one. I think the "Observation log of my Fiancee - A Self Proclaimed Villainess" series did that a bit better when its sequel, it wasn't the original main character but one of her friends who was the villainess of the next series that has to be saved.
As far as being oversaturated... It's somewhat true in Japanese manga, but VERY true in Korean Manhwa, where the villainess genre is nearly half of the Romance Fantasy titles that I see.
(The not letting the endings rest is something that also annoys me about Final Fantasy sequels, they rarely take things in a new direction and give new challenges, it's almost always a retread of the last crisis.)
I can see that being the case for Korean manga - I notice how on Netflix (we get a lot of Korean content here!) the Korean TV dramas tend to home in on one or two particular themes that are seen as 'hot' and then there's a whole string of them and you can't tell them apart! 😅
As to Hamefura and the retreading of the doom danger (not letting endings rest) may perhaps also have to do with the original light novel and how that's structured? Another commenter here has read the novel series and mentioned that after the initial (perhaps surprising) success, the author kept adding chapters that went round the same issue - iow, there probably was no focused narrative plan at the beginning and then ofc the story meanders ...
@@Food4Dogs Yeah, that's pretty much my experience with the Manhwa's as well. Occasionally you'll get a few mixed in that are interesting though.
@@Food4Dogs Yeah, when they build the entire world around this one idea, and didn't really have any other ideas on how they could use those characters, worlds, countries, etc... Hamefura with the constant doom games, FF4 with its "the leader of this country gets brainwashed again", FF10 with "Oops, I guess we didn't actually kill Sin off and he's back."
best anime and magna + youtuber
Aww 🤗 .. too kind!
New video, yay !!
I liked very much the first season of the show
How are you doing?
Thanks, MC, everything is fine at my end. 👍🏻
Wishing you good things!
Weeee~
YESS I LOVE THIS ANIME
Any yuri route on the vn?
Unfortunately, no female LI routes ... I've seen quite a few complaints about that.
@@Food4Dogs Aw that's a shame. It would have been an automatic buy for a lot of people.
@@EluciaDeLuteIma Yep, this is one story/characters where it really made sense.
HELLLOOO
Hey vai jogar subahibi quando?
: )
I learned a thing or two about otome games watching this video. One word of warning: Your phone was very close to falling off the table in the video, please be careful!
Ah haha .. yea, I do drop stuff (what with having Dupuytren's) quite a bit. But fortunately we have a nice thick carpet and I'm sitting on a cushion, close to the ground. 😉
Man. Everytime I see Food4Dogs post a new video, I realize that she has the most based taste on the internet. Oh but supports (edit: Geordo not Greggory) and Caterina. I dunno I think I might take back my based taste statement haha. Thanks for posting this! I might take a look at this as I've read the manga and I've watched the anime!
Gregory? I haven't come across a Gregory ... 🤔
@@Food4DogsOh my gosh I am so stupid! I meant Geordo! hahaha!
Ah well. He's sort of the obvious pre-programmed route, I guess .. I'm looking forward to the pirate! 😁
Also not sure what to make of Geordo's sadistic tendencies?? 🙄
For me I don't understand those kinda of games. So expensive and they are literally images with text. They has to be 60% of the price... in my country, this is 70 EUR. Overpriced.
digitally this should only cost around 45 EUR I believe? however, these types of visual novels are often so long that they can span the length of multiple regular novels and end up being a bang for your buck. for example, all of the harry potter series which is 7 large novels is 1,084,170 words and the entirety of the popular visual novel, umineko, is 1,152,480 words! also add the price of a digital art book i suppose. regardless, otome games constantly go on sale for like 30%-50% off especially around the holidays.
I meant production value. AAA games cost 70 EUR. Meanwhile this has barely any production value. :D @@hoshinokirbyenjoyer
