Very interesting discussion. As soon as i experienved video games i was hooked - didn't change ever since. Technical progress was exciting especially in the 80ties/90ties for me and i can't reproduce this, but the fun is the very game itself. Only streaming isn't a thing i am looking forward to, though. I still buy printed books and vinyls, so i might switch collecting for older systems then - or just use my backlog. Cave of forgotten dreams seems to be an interesting thing - too bad i don't have a 3D TV anymore...

My interest in gaming went to the wayside as I got older and got busy with life, but once I got into language learning I started playing games way more. Highly recommend revisiting old games in a language you're trying to learn!

If a game lets me do it without changing my console's language, I periodically play some in French. I did much of my schooling in French (Canadian), and have barely used it since. I went from exclusively dreaming in French to having a hard time keeping up when people do speak it around me. So it's a thing I now do periodically to brush off the rust.

    • @mystery79

I tried it with Horizon Forbidden West in Spanish, but I realized I needed to brush up on the language around the options menu, lol.

    • @riikka9842
      @riikka9842 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@mystery79 There can be really specific language to gaming, and stuff can be weird if you do games with too many world specific terms too. I keep it to things I know well or stuff grounded in the real world. I did FFXV in French one time, but I had already done it in English and Japanese first. They gave Ardyn a fantastic voice actor in every language haha. I checked out some others on youtube after that.
The FF pixel remasters have full language options so it's on my down the road list to replay them after I run them all first to do a French run at some point. That should be interesting.

You always make me hopeful for my future (as I’ve spent my entire life being scared of getting older. At 16 I was already dreading my birthdays! I am 39 now) and I adore seeing your level of enthusiasm for something that is not traditionally linked to people who are around your age. I’m about to turn 30 and it’s so inspiring to hear others who haven’t given up on the things they love. I surround myself with the things I enjoy which isn’t the typical adult deco but it’s what I like and that’s what matters.

    The importance of storytelling!
I find often that people can forget that video games are a beautiful vessel for stories. That’s why I don’t think I’ll ever get “over” gaming! As long as they continue to deliver stories I care about, I’ll always find the time to pick up a controller and play.

I am a "gameplay > story" guy and I have been having a blast on playing shoot em ups. I got into "Sora", DoDonpachi series, Hellsinker and many more. When I played Crimzon Clover, I can easily say its a very very well made game but I can't seem to push myself on finishing and getting better at that game. When I tried to compare it to Sora and G-Darius, I realized what that game is missing. A story, character and setting that is actually interesting. Sora is about a girl who decided to break the chains from being a pawn of petty war into some who will destroy anyone who are obstacle to her goal of returning the big beautiful blue sky she saw once during her childhood, or G-Darius where the empty space looks like an underwater horror battle for survival.

As life changes, people's tastes alter, and people come in and out of the hobby. In my university days, I stopped playing for a few years, but now in my middle of life, I play more now than I did when I was a child. Cave of Forgotten Dreams was one the first 3D Blu-rays I watched, on my PSVR in fact. I certainly felt the dichotomy you described, with the cave paintings demonstrating some of the first moving images in human history, meanwhile I'm experiencing (secondhand through film) that same effect with a VR gaming headset thousands of years later.
Technology never ceases to amaze. Even if some of the generational leaps in gaming aren't as immediately apparent compared to decades past, there is always something new to appreciate (along with plenty games in the past left to discover). It's one of the reasons why I continue to return to this hobby, even if reprieves become necessary from time to time.

I loved all your discussions here! It's so interesting to hear from another perspective.
I've been playing games since I was about 5 and have definitely fallen in and out of love with gaming over the years. Recently I've really felt like my love has been rekindled by revisiting games that I played when I was younger, or older games that I just missed out on. I always wondered if my love for those games was simply there because I was a kid and it had such an impression on me. Properly replaying through Skies of Arcadia after almost 2 decades (oh god) made me realize, hey nah this was actually just an awesome JRPG! That's gotten me down the path of wanting to play lots of games from that era (late 90s/early 2000s) and it's been an incredibly fun time. Made me think about how many amazing adventures I maybe missed out on, and I'm dying to experience them all!

I started collecting games seriously about 2 years ago. Im nearing 500 physical games and I can honestly say collecting games has really taken a lot of the joy from playing them away.
Combined with a stresfull job and life, I have never gamed less. I still try but sometimes I go weeks without playing a game and when I do get back into it. Its mostly games I have already played many times before.

I had a discussion with one of my regulars here on this very topic, and he very acutely pointed out that all the people he met who said they'd lost the joy they used to have for gaming had in fact serious stress issues. Stress *will* do that to you!

@@Food4Dogs Yes, I am quite a bit worried about Xbox's troubles, even though I've always been a Playstation and Nintendo gamer. There is ample evidence that competition increases consumer friendly practices. Can we imagine the Xbox One removing their authentication requirements, or Playstation 3 lowering its launch price of $599(!), without the other to push them? So much is riding on Starfield now! Is it possible that Xbox may decide to leave the console gaming market all together in the next generation if they realize that they can no longer compete with Sony and Nintendo?

It was refreshing to get a new video. I feel I can relate to this channel in a lot of ways. As an American man in his mid-40s, I've been a gamer from the very beginning, cutting my teeth on the Fairchild Channel F and Atari 2600.
I was a spoiled brat growing up. I had every console that released (except the Neo Geo). Then, as an adult, I bought my own hardware and games. I always had to be first in line to get the swanky new gaming console. I remember the midnight release of the PS2. I was there on day one for the launch of the Xbox 360, waiting in line at Best Buy for over 4 hours. I'm always excited to see what the future will hold and every bit as excited for gaming as the little boy who played on his Atari 2600 many years ago.

What a delightful and insightful video (as always). You couldn't have said it any more eloquently: our tastes don't need to divert from what we once love, but they very well may adapt. I've found myself drawn towards different games from when I was a kiddo, but boy do I still find as much pleasure in something from the PS2 era as I do on the PS5. The greatness of gaming is the breadth of its library - no matter your interests or preferences, or how they shift over time, there's ALWAYS something to draw you in all the more!
By the way: you secured quite the wonderful haul there! Dokapon Kingdom is one of the best multiplayer party games I've ever had (though be ready to forsake every friendship you've ever hard, not joking) and Klonoa is one of my all-time favorite mascots. I've been playing games since the 80's. I also lost interest at some point a few years ago. Sometimes it's just ok to take a rest, try different things. I tried modern board games when I got tired of video games, and now I'm addicted to both video and board games! Trying new genres also worked for me, specially indie games. I always love hearing your perspective on games! It's not often I hear someone speak so thoughtfully on them, so when I do, it's always a unique take. I'll absolutely have to check out the documentary you mentioned, too!
I hadn't thought much about cloud gaming, but now that you mention it, I think you're absolutely correct. I also think the "intelligence" of enemies and companions in many games will see a huge jump in the new future.
But my strongest reaction in this video was to you having Dokapon Kingdom! I preordered it, and it releases here tomorrow, but mine is apparently delayed another week. I played it on the Wii. My husband and I unwittingly chose to start with a long game, having no idea how long it would actually take. Somewhere mid-game, my husband sold it to a game store without my knowledge! I was going to tell him he had to buy another copy, but when we found out it was well over $100, I had to give up. I've missed it ever since, and I never stopped checking up on it until the port was announced. I have no idea why it stuck with me so strongly, but I can't wait to have it back in my hands again! I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

For the longest time as someone who is 31 I had been feeling like my concentration, my memory, and my attention had all been filed down by the current state of our technological culture and its speed.
You have a computer, a dictionary, a calculator a movie screen and so much more in your pocket in the form of a phone, filled with software actively battling for your attention. I felt like I was struggling to stay focused and actually settle on taking in the experiences I was having.
I rediscovered JRPGs during the lockdown and they felt like a huge help. These were 50, 60, sometimes 200 hour experiences that I had to make time for and for which I had to clear my mind to take in, and after years of playing the latest flavor of the month releases jumping from game to game with friends, Ryza on Switch was instrumental in me rediscovering games as an experience at 30.

I managed to get into it heavily around ps3 gen with mostly used stuff. The current gen has made that so much harder for people as stuff goes more and more digital and the collector race that is going on now. But I managed to gather almost literally every RPG for PS3 from checking out pawn and thrift stores and stuff like that. Again, tougher now as people do that now with the aim of resale at marked up prices, but it's still possible if you are first haha.
I had a huge gap in gaming for years and missed a couple console gens entirely. I was absolutely terrible when I got back into it. It took me a couple years before I completed anything at all. But the thing is, it's a skill. Practice helps. You will get there if you keep poking at it. And you may find you have more aptitude with some genres over others. I'm terrible at stuff that requires me very much knowing my positioning on the screen as if that thing is me (say, shooters or platforming). I am not so good at orienting myself and figuring out precision in that way. But I love turn based games and action games with a sword work better than the precision needed for shooting or making careful jumps.

One more thing about generational leaps: I agree with your take that the leaps are much more recognizable in hindsight when going back to older generations. But I also want to emphasize that exhausting technical limits is exceedingly expensive. During the PS2 era, all games at least made an attempt to use the entire hardware; very few deliberately didn't. However, these days, consoles are powerful enough that a developer can bring an idea to life without exhausting the limits. Many indie games do not need fancy graphics or extensive features. This has led to another phenomenon in which generations blend more. Look at how many games are available for several console generations because they can run optimally on each hardware. Games from 8 years ago are still relevant, whereas 10 years ago, finding player bases for 10-year-old games was much rarer. Of course, the discussion is a lot more nuanced than that, but I wanted to touch on it.
I just discovered your channel, and I feel right at home, binging all your stuff. I want to write to you so much; maybe I'll have time in the coming days.

I really like your idea of cycles.
I have been playing somewhat regularly during my teen years, but as I attended and graduated the university, I found it harder and harder to find a will to try and enjoy new (or old) games.
But now I'm 27, a bit more stable in my career and relationships, yet I find myself drawn back to games.
I found that I was putting too much pressure on myself to enjoy games as I used to. I thought that I need to try old classic titles and new genres and finish games that I started to fully appreciate them. But I don't.
I learned to put down things that don't bring me joy in the moment. And at the same time I got more comfortable with the negative feeling of being not perfect - not finishing games, missing out on classics, etc.

I have too many hobbies to be good for me, as well as a full time job and family/friends that I want to spend time with and gaming often falls to the wayside for weeks (in rare cases even months) but the minute I get back to it, especially when I go back to certain games like the Elder Scrolls series for instance, it feels like I never left and can’t stop for hrs. There’s something magical about gaming and exploring a game, no matter if it’s a linear or open world game, there’s always something fun to discover. I don’t watch TV outside the handful shows I have on Blu-ray/DVD that I rewatch occasionally because I’d rather play the story myself as I can do in a game.
PS What a coincidence, I recently started playing Binary Domain on my Xbox 360. I had it on my shelf for a few years but never got to it. I really like it, the voice controls are a bit awkward, especially with the old 360 headset but it’s unique and fun.
Also, since game pass came around I’ve discovered so many great indie games, that I later bought on more than one platform to support the devs. The most recent on is called Ravenlok, it’s a relatively short game, I finished it in on sitting but it’s great. Highly recommended. It’s a voxel game though and I think you once mentioned it isn’t your favourite kind of style?

I can only speak from my experience but to me the story was always the best part and enjoying the experience you get from starting and finishing a game. Regarding the hardware side of things, I think we have just seen a huge leap (and are still seeing it!) in the form of VR! From the birth of gaming up until a few years ago gaming was controlling a character on a screen with your fingers and thumbs. Your mind could transport you into the realm of the video game, but it was all done with fingers and thumbs. With VR, for the first time, WE became the character! WE took the steps inside a virtual world, we waved, or pointed, or clapped our hands at something - we didn't just push a button! I think VR is only going to get more popular and devices are becoming more wireless and more powerful.
In my VR "journey" I've gone on lovely walks around mountains, virtual gardens or tourist spots around the world, I've been a super soldier fighting aliens, a fighter pilot, an airline pilot, or even a race car driver. Perhaps my fondest memory of all was watching my 70 year old grandad fighting off zombies in a virtual apocalypse. The list goes on and on. The revolutions are still going on all around us.

VR certainly is a fascinating technology to watch. It has so much potential. I don't have VR myself, and I've never had a problem transporting myself into a game in my imagination and becoming The Character 😃.
Whether it will fulfill that potential of becoming a device that will drive gaming development .. I guess the jury at this stage is still out (it's too early to say). I see far greater use of VR in areas such as training, education, research etc.

I get a lot of people here on the channel telling me about their gaming experience, and so far very few ever mention VR as important in their gaming life. That's really where my impressions come from, I guess.
But I always keep an eye on anything interesting brewing in the tech world!

I will always love gaming. Im 38 now and i love them as much as the day my dad brought my first NES home with Rampage when i was 4 years old. The times in my life when ive been pulled away ive found to be objectively my least happiest. There have been times when my love waned. I remember in 2013 playing the new Tomb Raider and feeling a bit depressed like i had seen all games had to offer but when i get that way now i will mix it up and start playing other genres. For instance, since 2020 I've gotten into roguelikes and games like Monster train and Undermine have become some of my favorite games ever. You should always have a variety of things that make you happy but i also feel you should never feel guilty for the things that you love that bring you joy.

And to add to what you said, ive gotten heavily into indie games. I like going through the Switch eshop and checking out the games sometimes marked down to a couple of dollars. We are at a point of quality in gaming where even these ultra cheap budget titles can be incredibly high quality and have often just been overlooked.

Can't agree more about graphics not being the most important thing in gaming and how much value there is in older games and older game generations still plus indie games today with lower poly graphics being so innovative in their mechanics. I still find older games I missed growing up and have to back track to play them. Thanks for the update and enjoy all the new great finds!

I actually relate very well to your explanation: played some adventure games back in the early 90s, and two years ago started playing again :)
Last year I finished the Loiste game "Infra!", a little known gem for people that like exploring games.
    Now I'm playing "The Witness".

It's one of my most favorite and treasured experiences that I ever had, seeing Sakuna's personal growth from a brat to a princess made me so emotional, and for that alone I'd recommend this for everyone, hope you see it and give it a chance one day

It was a really good question regarding losing interest into gaming as you grow older.
For me, I’ve never felt the same feeling of the first time playing video games anymore. I feel excitement, however, it’s not the same feeling of figuring out how the “machine” works, that for me, adds up a bit of challenge when playing games for the first time. You have the game and also the hardware to find out how it works. Haha
    Thanks for the video again!

I know this is a bit of a late comment but whilst you were talking about the ports and not necessarily caring about ray tracing (or, 'needing it' more so), instantly the xenoblade chronicles ports came to mind!
If I remember correctly, there was a 3DS version which did take some hits in the graphical department, but it was just so incredible seeing that wow? My gosh! It actually worked and it did a good job of replicating that experience.
The console world is amazing for its growth, and I think that's a big part of why people shouldn't worry too much about things going stale. Even the old becomes the new in some cases! Human ambition is truly ceaseless.

Yea, that Xenoblade 3D port to the New 3DS is mind-blowing. I go back to it regularly and really enjoy (despite the wonky graphics) playing it on a small, comfy handheld.

Insightful video! Regarding the evolution of software/tech for consoles, i’m in agreement with the user that I don’t find the technical leaps nearly as interesting just because of how minuscule they can be and will be from now on. The top tech graphics are most likely to be utilised for a AAA game that focuses on photo realism, and lacks a distinctive art style, which I’m usually more impressed by and find it more memorable in comparison. I’d be as happy with a game that didn’t have the best tech and graphics, because of how original and distinct it is. And admittedly there is just something that is quite comforting/a sense of homeyness to me when it comes to older games that I don’t feel as much with more recent ones.
I’m in a current phase where I still love video gaming with a passion, but I think the slightly less innovativeness of AAA games + the current costs, is a slightly unappealing aspect. My current attention is focused on picking up old hidden, experimental, unconventional gems from the pre-ps4/Xbox one era like ps1, DS, GameCube etc., which I understand a lot of people find it difficult to adapt to older games because of the “dated” graphics/control schemes but they’re forever a classic and usually have a technical aspect that can be as impressive today as they were when it first came out. Shenmue one of my favourite games of all time, is usually a testament to that in some aspects. I’m also much more inclined to support the indie games scene because of how original and unconventional the approach can be.
As you said, I’m just as excited for the older and more obscurer gems that I discover, as am with the new, but have gravitated more to that as of recently. 😊

I love your spirit of excitement, Britta! I have had a long time of neglecting the excitement about games and stories, given that so many people denounce it as childish or embarrassing, but when I finally decided to ditch those notions other people were trying to weigh on me, I have never enjoyed video games more in my life! They are amazing storytelling mediums.
Thank you for your videos and reminding everyone that gaming is just as much about fun and excitement as it is about graphics and hardware.

This was a fun video. I'm also new to Mega Man Battle Network too! Heads up use a guide with that electric dungeon. Its brutal. I was not expecting you to get Klonoa too :D
With that in mind I have some recommendations below.
Digimon World 1 PS1 - Open world style virtual pet RPG, one of the most charming worlds that I've played in. It has a lot of grinding, and a guide is useful once in a while.
Digimon World 3 / 2003 PS1 - A traditional RPG that is beautiful, easy to pick up and is charming. However, Story progression becomes too cryptic / padded. It really would benefit from a remake.
Custom Robo V1 N64 / Revolution GCN - Action RPGs with customizable toy robots. They fight in tiny arenas; in a way it reminds me of Pokémon with its progression but with its own take.
All of these are very fun, just with Digimon World 3, you likely want the 2003 as its the complete package. Also only play Digimon World 1 in English or Japanese. The other language versions tend to be unbeatable.
