I've never smoked cigarette in my entire life and I'm not planning to, but I remember my father acting similarly to Hank when it comes to education methods. He said "If I ever will see you smoking, I'll make you smoke 100 cigarettes in a row" after that he always proceeded to balcony to smoke some cigarettes. One after one. I hated him for that knowing my Grandpa died of lung cancer and I loved him a lot. Perhaps that's the reason why I hate everything about smoking.
It's a personal decision and something people do for the enjoyment of it. It can kill you when you are old and shave off the last 10-15 years of life, yes. But a lot of people simply don't care about those final years, which are going to suck anyway. I am one of them.

People will throw lit cigarette butts to chimps and about half of the chimps avoid the smell alone, the other half is attracted to it and picks it up and smokes it, and go out of their way to acquire more cigarettes, even going to the lengths of hiding them from the zookeepers in a stash. Maybe this genetic trait has something to do with the development of burning meat and making campfires; it would have been present accidentally in some hominid but our ancestors would have been breathing in a massive amount of smoke sitting by fires all day every day, perhaps a gene to make smoke inhalation not unpleasant was successful and the side effect is some people like actively smoking burning plant matter in modern times.

i remember when i was a kid and my father made the same threat about making me smoke a carton of cigs. if he ever caught me smoking. I told him sure, that's real logical cause after im done smoking all those packs ill forever have that addiction to want to keep smoking and you will be the one to blame. He realized i was right and never brought it up again. And yes i had a friend whos dad did this to him as he only every smoked 1 cig. to try it and hated it. After his dad made him smoke 5 packs in front of him, he never quit doing it and still smokes to this day.
