Yeah people kept asking him to cover "Norwegian Wood" and other songs and he was getting a little annoyed with it. This version of Overkill is just beautiful. I think it shut them up! :-)
I remember seeing him ages ago, probably around the time he started doing solo tours, at the Bardentreffen open-air festival in Nuremberg. Small stage, very intimate, good crowd, and somewhere way into his gig, he said "here's an old song. Paid me a lot of money... spent most of it!", and the he played "Down Under". Wonderful.
I thought the same thing. Most singers like Elton John and even Freddie Mercury would hit lower notes. Now I know in a concert they have to stretch their voices for the duration of the show and I'm sure they could still hit those notes but they go low instead of high.
Such a great vocalist, guitarist, and entertainer. Men at Work was my first concert, 12 years old. My sister Mary Alice took me to see them at the Salt Palace. I've never in my life seen one man and a guitar make such a a powerful and atmospheric statement, he doesn't just play the guitar he brings it to life like its some sort of living breathing, at times snarling yet majestic beast, capable of hitting you straight in the heart while taking you on an emotional roller coaster ride and that key change is almost inhuman for anyone without having to hit falsetto, I take my hat off to Colin Hay, he is indeed a bona fide legend who in my opinion is up there with Marley, Elton, Clapton, Stewart and Lennon
At an age when many singers are mumbling their way through old songs, it's great that Colin still has the range to nail that octave shift. It makes most of today's "artists" look like the second rate, glorified karaoke singers they really are.
People didn't suddenly get worse at singing. There has just been a shift in sound, but also in availability of music. There were some absolutely terrible sounding musicians back in the days, many of which still went on to make hit songs because they had the right sound. Likewise there are tons (probably more than before in fact, because the bar is actually higher) of great sounding artists today with incredible vocal ranges. But chances are if you don't like the artist or the sound, then you're going to judge them unfairly. I'd never listen to Charlie Puth, but the guy has perfect pitch for god sake. Technically he could sing better than most artists, yet do I think he sounds great or makes great music? No. It's subjective at the end of the day. Colin Hay isn't a very technically great artist. He just sings in a way I like and makes music i'd listen to.
@@TheCooderix I agree, and that's partly my point. Many artists today make it into the mainstream via a deliberate search for a very generic sound. Those with, let's say, a more interesting voice or vocal style are facing a much bigger challenge to get noticed

68 yrs old and still sings like he’s 20. Unbelievable! A big part of it is he quit drinking and smoking cause he knew they were destroying him. When he sings “waiting for my real life to begin” he holds out a note near the end of the song that I can’t do to save my life, and I’m a pretty decent singer. Colin is incredible. He should be playing in front of 50,000 people instead of 50.
after all these years is nice to hear his phrasing at the end of each verse still intact, can’t fake it when it’s just you and the guitar. Love this song, their best imo…
Colin's a Scotsman. And he is appreciated here--along with Finn--in the US by people that enjoy real music made by actual talented people. Colin is a musical treasure.
You must not have lived in America in the eighties. They ruled MTV and the airwaves as much as MJ and Madonna. Any American kid that was alive then knows the words to all their hits.
I heard this at the gym tonight. To my pleasant surprise and amazement, A 22 year old kid had it on his playlist. I am 47. I was just a pup when Colin Hay wrote this. I love that voice.... bravo
JustAnotherGamer And do you realize I was spinning this when you were in Nutsville? On a 45, no less. When it came on Solid Gold back in 1982, it was considered pop. Call it whatever you wish, Colin is a real talent. Thanks for posting this, whoever you are.
Thank you so much for this. It's great to hear Mr Hay belt out this stunner of a song from my teen years. If you turned on a radio in the 80s in Australia you'd hear some of the best rock and pop ever - and so much of it made by Aussie bands. They wrote songs that were uniquely Australian but could be enjoyed anywhere in the World. It made me proud as an Aussie teenager that our small country could produce so much great music; music that still stands up, decades after it was recorded...🙂

after all these years is nice to hear his phrasing at the end of each verse still intact, can’t fake it when it’s just you and the guitar.
Love this song, their best imo…
After all these years
" Overkill " has stood the test of time, absolutely.

Scrubs TV show has this song and Colin playing it... It's great, no matter where you find it...
My favorite Men at Work song. His voice is like no other.
Very true, and his voice is one you could listen to on and on.
‘Ghosts appear and fade away’...killer lyric. Colin and MAW, so underrated
Neil Finn and Colin Hay get no credit in America for how wonderful they are. Love the down under boys who made great music in the 80's and 90's.
They did win a Grammy for album of the year. I know, I watched it.
Colin's a Scotsman. And he is appreciated here--along with Finn--in the US by people that enjoy real music made by actual talented people. Colin is a musical treasure.
@@thedevilinthecircuit1414 Scot-Australian!
You must not have lived in America in the eighties. They ruled MTV and the airwaves as much as MJ and Madonna.
Any American kid that was alive then knows the words to all their hits.
@@thedevilinthecircuit1414 Finn is a Kiwi..a New Zealander.
What a powerful rendition of a great classic song from my childhood. I was/am a HUGE fan of these guys. Colin Hay is legendary.
This song is so very beautiful. He is such an underrated lyricist. AMAZING and I am very excited to see him in 2021, in Philadelphia.
I heard this at the gym tonight. To my pleasant surprise and amazement, A 22 year old kid had it on his playlist. I am 47. I was just a pup when Colin Hay wrote this. I love that voice.... bravo
There's absolutely no substitute for talent.
Reminds me of Scrubs, Loved Colins little cameos 😀
What a song to write still love it....... Dec2019
Man. This is amazing
One of my favorites from M.A.W.
This is proof that pop music used to have talent. Amazing.
Adolph Oliver Bush You realize that this is rock, right?
JustAnotherGamer
And do you realize I was spinning this when you were in Nutsville? On a 45, no less. When it came on Solid Gold back in 1982, it was considered pop.
Call it whatever you wish, Colin is a real talent. Thanks for posting this, whoever you are.
Adolph Oliver Bush lol ur both sad
Thanks to both of you, Toasty and Marly, for sullying a great tune with your unnecessary blather.
Is it just pop? It seems deeper
The song builds and you can't think it can reach higher and then he gets to the top at the end - what a song about overcoming!
Underrated as a unique vocalist, with an instantly recognizable pitch along with the intelligent lyrics he wrote. An original.
Brilliant Mr. Hay !!! You belong in The RnR Hall of Fame(Shame).
Hell yeah he does!
Good lord this is great.
Wow he still sounds fantastic,,,,,,,,
I will come back to this performance many times to have another listen.
I can't get to sleep
I think about the implications
Of diving in too deep
And possibly the complications
Especially at night
I worry over situations
I know we'll be alright
Perhaps it's just imagination
Day after day it reappears
Night after night my heartbeat shows the fear
Ghosts appear and fade away
Come back another day
Alone between the sheets
Only brings exasperation
It's time to walk the streets
Smell the desperation
At least there's pretty lights
And though there's little variation
It nullifies the night from overkill
Day after day it reappears
Night after night my heartbeat shows the fear
Ghosts appear and fade away
Come back another day
I can't get to sleep
I think about the implications
Of diving in too deep
And possibly the complications
Especially at night
I worry over situations that
I know will be alright
It's just overkill
Day after day it reappears
Night after night my heartbeat shows the fear
Ghosts appear and fade away
Ghosts appear and fade away
Ghosts appear and fade away
Amazingly poignant and picturesque lyrics, hauntingly realistic.
Obrigado
Me: "No way he's gonna hit that top note...Colin Hay: "Hold my beer!"
"Ghost appear and fade away" or "goes to be and fade away" ??? ROFL

He is a master!
Lol no doubt with Colin 👍
Yes, I remember him doing this on Scrubs. It was great then, and it's still great today.
I played this song in a band in 1982 and 2010. It holds up almost as well as Colin Hay has held up.
JD hiding in the broom closet while Colin is on there playing guitar
JD: Please keep it down.
Colin Hay: I CANT GET TO SLEEP...!
My favorite episode because of Colin Hay.
Thanks for your incredible support and love towards my music for a long ago. I really appreciate it all, you have been a great fans and May God bless all my lovely fan’s ❤ how long have you been my fan?
This song blew me away when I first heard it many years ago, and it does still. Just gets better with age. What a talent.
This video is getting some traction. So good. They’re like holy crap that was good
The beauty of this song is not only in the choice of the chords that give a special dimension to the music, but the words are made and written for all of us. In conclusion, there is carefree music and other feels under the skin forever.
