  • As a little third anniversary special, I'm going back to my shortly-lived "Musical Hell TV" videos to bring you "The Secret of Anastasia"! It's the story of the long-lost Russian princess who goes to reclaim her identity and rip off that other Anastasia cartoon. Will she find out who she is? Will she choose her roguish accomplice Vladimir, or the obviously-the-villain-in-disguise Prince Paul? Will she learn the secret behind her magic talking instruments that happen to look and sound exactly like her dead family? Stay tuned!

    When the Grandmother accuses Anastasia of cashing in on a tragedy, she's ironically right on a meta-level.

      @@SEELE-ONE well in this fictional incident, yes, the grandmother is a hurt old woman hardening herself against disappointment.
      What the original commentator is referring to is the real life incident where Anna Anderson (the woman who impersonated Anastasia) was effectively cashing in on a tragedy.

      I couldn't help but notice how cartoonishly harsh they made the grandmother and for no other reason than as just a lazy way to make us feel sorry for Anastasia. I know this is brought up way too much in these Anastasia films and people are mostly sick of it, but in the Don Bluth version.. the grandmother is clearly heartbroken and a bit dismissive of Anastasia when they first meet (though not without good reason), but the grandmother is still civil with her, doesn't dish out insults to her, and listens to what Anastasia has to say even though she's convinced that she's not the real Anastasia, she has a small slither of hope that she is her.
      Also in the Bluth one, Anastasia doesn't insult the grandmother back and break down crying when she's dismissed, she empathizes with the grandmother's heartbreak because she lost her family also and as such gently reaches out in as though to say "I don't know if I'm the real Anastasia or not. I do know that I just want a family and it's clear to me you want yours back to you. I wish I could bring them back, but I can't. The only thing I can do is ask that you give me a chance to find help me figure out who I am. To give me a chance to be your family."

    Wait, is this movie trying to tell me that no one could find Anastasia for about 10+ years even though she was still in the palace she grew up in, the very palace that was stormed by the soldiers, singing very loudly out of the open windows?
    Also, how did she get food and other things necessary for survival? Were there other spirits belonging to the people killed in the revolution trapped in other inanimate objects as well who prepared her meals, a la Be Our Guest?
    At least the Don Bluth version has a shred of respect for the dead. And good music.

    I hate the design of all of the characters, especially Nicholas II and Alexandra because they’re so far from how the actual historical figures. And I hate how they treat Tatiana. Like I get they’re going for beautiful and tragically sad, but it’s so far from the actual Tatiana’s character. Anastasia also wasn’t some ingenue, she was funny and loud, not some sweet girl waiting for a boy.

    • @nifralo2752
      @nifralo2752 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Anastasia was probably the Tsars least favourite because she was boisterous a bit of a tomboy. When he saw that was just the umbilical cord he stormed out in a huff.
      Granted this could be because she was a lot younger than the other three but Alexi who was close in age. Not only was he the only boy but also sick. So this could be her way of getting attention.

    • @C.V317
      @C.V317 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@nifralo2752 this is actually way off; Nicholas and Alexandra were very family oriented, and the Anastasia’s birth was less “storming off in a huff” and more “general disappointment because of numerous miscarriages and the possibility of not having being able to bear children anymore while having no heir”.
      While Anastasia was known to be a brat and pretty mean, it’s important to remember that she was barely seventeen when she was killed and most anecdotes about her were from before she was ten. And fun fact, she also had issues with bad health, as did her sisters. It is very likely that they were carriers of hemophilia, and could have suffered less severe joint pains and bleeding issues as their brother with significantly less attention paid to it.

    Great commentry. I think I would be still stuck in the first minute going on and on about how the other two sisters Maria and Olga were kicked out (on hindsight maybe the best that could happen to them), that St. Petersburg and not Moscow was the capital of Russia during the reign of the Czar, how no one looks even remotely like their historic references,.... I think at some point I would have just had my brain explode. Because I even sideeyed the original Anastasia-Animation film by Don Bluth suspiciously. I don’t have any particular attachment to the Bluth version, but, if nothing else, gotta appreciate that it’s better than this. I think it just rubs extra salt in the wound to have a character call out exploiting a personal tragedy for monetary gain in a story made to exploit a personal tragedy for monetary gain. It’s like one person on the writing team felt that tingle of conscience and tried to insert what little self-awareness they had the power to.

    It's really interesting that this movie portrays the Soviets so obsessed with finding and killing Anastasia that they hatch elaborate plans that involve murdering and impersonating foreign royalty when in real life 1) heaps of Romanovs, including the Czar's brother (who, at the time was third in line to the throne) survived 2) at the time of the Russian Revolution women were barred from taking the Russian throne anyway, so she couldn't have become Czarina even if she had survived.
