Spot on.. Also, the band was heavily influenced by Bill Hicks and his satire stand up comedy. Hicks often speaks of california falling of into the ocean.
I could be totly wrong, but the way I interpret the "moms gonna fix it" section is that mom refers to mother earth, hence the other lyrics which talk about a flood and earthquakes

Not seeing he is holding 3 fingers up read between the pointer and ring! It’s the middle finger! This is a middle finger to California! See you down in Arizona bay, I’m praying for rain, I’m praying for tidal waves. Mom please flush it all away!
Since you're into bass let me assure you that TOOL is THE band to listen to. Justin Chancellor is one of the all time greats, and the same is true for the band as a whole. And consistently awesome lyrics.
I agree with you 💯! It's amazing to me that this band has been around for over 25 years and seems to only get better and better. Also their older work has held up especially well over the years. IMO Justin has been the best bass player on the planet for awhile now. Having him with Danny Carry in this band along with Maynard and Adam Jones definitely feels unfair to other bands. The only other bands I can recall that had such a high level of talent from each member are Pink Floyd and Rush.
Maynard James Keenan has incredible range in his voice. In my own humble opinion I think he's the best lyricist of my generation. Especially when you take the content of his lyrics and how great his voice is. Enjoy the journey
@@MusicCatsandCoffee one of the best things about the Tool journey is deciphering the meaning of the songs. It's very rare for anyone to "get it" the first, second, or even third time through. It's worth the time spent, I assure you. Just wait until you dive into 46&2. 🤯
Omg, so many amazing songs..... Parabol/Parabola, 46&2, Vicarious, Wings for Marie/10,000 days, Pushit (Salival version), Sober, The Grudge, Right in Two, Lateralus..... onward and upward! Enjoy the journey! And I apologize for all rabid Tool fans you just became introduced to. We don't mean to be "those people" but gd it, one of the greatest bands ever! haha
I have quite a list of Tool songs! No promises I'll do all of them and it might take me awhile, but I'm doing 46&2 today. You'll see it in probably a week. :)
Justin Chancellor is Tool's bassist, and is an amazing musician. Tool's original lineup was great, but Justin took them to a whole new level. He and Danny Carey (Tool's drummer...the best drummer) are a magical pairing.
Suggestion: "Wings for Marie Pt.1" and "10,000 Days" together as one video. Off the same album as "The Pot", bass all over the place, and an emotional rollercoaster. Challenge: Do not cry at the end. Worth it either way.
I've always thought that ending was supposed to replicate the chaotic sound and feeling of an emergency alert system going off, like one that might sound if an earthquake was causing the west coast to sink into the ocean. Definitely do more Tool if you like longer songs that take you on a journey and Maynard's voice.
"Flood" was my go-to song every time it was storming, when I first started driving. Then Ænima came out, and "Ænema" was the new go-to. Felt like being inside a tidal wave.
Another random person… that’s awesome. Keep up the good work. I like how you listen and then dissect. When something intrigues you, you take it in. A lot of people do not have the patience to do so. Thanks for the reaction.
Think everyone covered it but the song is basically about his time living in LA and how he thought it was horrible. Full of narcissist's and self absorbed people. The song is tongue in cheek play on California falling into the Ocean which might happen one day if the San Andreas fault line gives way. He is telling all these folks to learn to swim and he will see them in Arizona Bay... which funny enough he now owns a Winery in Arizona. He does not mean it literally hence, "don't call me a pessimist, read between the lines". He just really hated living there lol

Welcome to the Tool family. Many of us Tool lovers had other bands that we called our favorites in the past. Then we started investigating the rabbit hole, and fell right in. Tool can do that to you. You start of liking a certain riff, or a certain song, and the next thing you know you have to hear more Tool, and then before you know it, it seems like you need to hear at least a few songs everyday. Sadly though, going back to listen to some other band might not be the same, especially if you compare them to Tool. That's been my experience anyhow. I hope that you really enjoy your Tool journey. It's been amazing for me.
A quick search of the comments told me there wasn't much said about this, but the entire album is dedicated to, and inspired by, Bill Hicks. Hicks had an entire comedy/philosophy bit about a great earthquake causing the shit hole that is LA to slide off into the ocean. Thus creating Arizona Bay, and the need for folks to "learn to swim". It is at once metaphorical, and literal. At least as I understand it. I became a fan of Bill Hicks in the 80's after his many appearances on David Letterman, and was pleasantly surprised to see Tool's dedication to him when this album was released in 96. Hicks died in 94-ish.

As someone who generally needs several passes myself for a song (or an album) to really stick, I've wondered why I've not seen anyone else do that before. This one's a reaction channel cliche so you've likely heard it before, but beyond the shock value, the whole thing is really an amazing metaphor. Gemini Syndrome - "Gravedigger": Gemini Syndrome - "Zealot": My favorite hidden gems (non-singles) from these guys. They aren't well known, but have a bunch of great songs. Most of their singles are good too--"Pleasure and Pain", "Stardust", "Remember we Die" are some you may have heard of. Tallah - "Overconfidence": Great track from a new metal band that released their first album last year. Old-school nu metal vibe, combines a bunch of 90's metal stuff but they really make it their own.
Nice song choices and i agree, that second listen is something nobody does and make Lauren quite unique. Its not just a reaction, more a real review and breakdown from her perspective. I love the style
Thanks so much! Yeah, sometimes 5+ mins go by whenever I pause it---which I try to edit down. So it helps to hear the song again without interruptions. I've heard Pisces, yes. As for the other bands, never heard of them. Going on the list, thanks! :)
Tool Are: Maynard James Keenan (Vox) Adam Jones (Gtr) Justin Chancellor (Bass). He replaced Paul D'Amour from the Ænima album onwards Danny Carey (Drums)
Hi Lauren, I'm glad you listen to the songs again. That's really important, especially with Tool. I'm a huge fan, but some songs don't grab me on the first or second listen. For other Tool, you definitely have to try "Sober", "46&2" (as someone else mentioned), "H", and "Jimmy". These come from the same time or earlier than this song. You might try them out before getting into the newer stuff. As for other bands/songs, to stick to something that seems like a cross between Tool and Chevelle, try Karnivool - "New Day". You did Slipknot, so you should check out another masked band, Mushroomhead. "Solataire Unraveling" is a good one to start with. To get outside of your comfort zone musically, but with lyrics that I think you'll really appreciate, try Mgła - "Exercises in Futility IV".
Thanks for the song suggestions! I listen to all of the songs twice, mostly to hear them without interruptions. A second listen always helps me get a better feel for the song as a whole. :)
Recently found you because of the Type O stuff, but Tool is my absolute favorite. Love your stuff because of your intriguing personality. You seem to think a lot like my friends and I. Kind of leaning towards dark, but still able to see the silly. Outstanding...we all are just really taken with you and your reactions... excellent, excellent work! Also, consider a listen to Maynard's other project Puscifer. Shares vocal duties with Carina Round. Really special music. Even if you don't react to it, find some time to listen on your own...you will thank yourself...
Good stuff, really enjoyed this. The double listen is a good concept! I’d suggest checking out: -”46&2” -”Parabol/Parabola” (that’s two titles that make up one song, it’s suggested to listen to both back to back) -”Disposition/Reflection/Triad” (same thing here, three titles but basically one big song) -”The Grudge” Subbed, would love to see more Tool clips ✌🏼
Ps. Try to avoid any music videos, they are super cool but they are pretty weirded out so the visuals will grab your attention and you’ll easily kinda miss the song.
Thanks for watching! I wish that's why I did that. :) Actually that's just to help me out when editing. The only sound in the video is me talking. I have to add the song in later so that helps me line it up. Not nearly as cool.
San Andreas baby! I was surprised that for someone who wanted base you seemed to focus on a lot of other stuff, and in trying to work things out ( unsuccessfully) I think you missed your favorite bit...... hopefully you have found that since :)
This is one of my favorite songs by Tool, but I honestly don't know what it's about, which is why I have to agree with you on it being about fake, materialistic people and things. But MJK wrote it in a way to be referencing about California's "big one" and how cities like LA would fall into the ocean (hence the Learn To Swim part). Although I know a bit about earthquakes so "the big one" won't drown California, the big one is going to be either off Oregon, Washington or both simultaneously as a 9.0+
@@MusicCatsandCoffee it about society as a whole concentrating on all of the wrong things. You nailed it towards the end of the song in your commentary.
The ending is chaotic and painful because so will be our ending. If you do ...third eye....it will be the same in some places...because prying open your 3rd eye is sometimes uncomfortable
Should check out Bill Hicks "arizona bay". It's a stand up album that inspired much of the lyrics on this album. The intro from third eye is a direct sample.
When it comes to Tool (or any song really) Whatever you get from it, is right and true That is the purpose of song Dive in and take what you will 🎶🎼👽🎼🎶 Psst...46 & 2 will give you some BASS 😉😋
Listen, analyze, listen again...keep going with this. Stick with this album maybe a couple more songs? Maybe Eulogy, 46&2 and H. The Pot, a great song yes, but will seem like child's play if you continue the TOOL journey.
@@MusicCatsandCoffee I've been in a billion bands and played for tons of people. I can't explain the feeling of rolling my svt ampeg into the room and everybody gasps, puts down there drinks and forgets their conversation, because they know my bass is going to blow their head off! Stage fright my ass baby!
You should give Mudvayne a shot. They were sort of like what you'd get if you squished Slipknot and Tool together, more cerebral than Slipknot but heavier than Tool. Their first album LD.50 was a masterpiece. -1, Death Blooms, Cradle, Prod, and especially Severed are all great songs off that first album. I think they were another band that didn't get a decent shot because of the gimmicky look they had when they first started.
@@MusicCatsandCoffee In regards to people giving you crap about not catching "mom" on the first listen... I blasted Mudvayne's "Death Blooms" for decades (even knew it by heart on guitar), thinking it was just some brutal nihilist/escapist-type raging. I didn't "get it" for about 20 years.
@5:10 The story is that Maynard wrote these lyrics to vent his feelings after the band showed up to a gig only to discover that it was a Scientology event. Hence "Fuck L. Ron Hubbard and fuck all his clones" later in the song @7:55 The "Learn to swim" line is because the song describes California suffering a massive earthquake that causes it to slide into the ocean . "Arizona Bay* alludes to Arizona being the new West Coast after this hoped-for natural disaster.
Lauren, it's to the point that when I see you posted a Tool, or anything Maynard, it becomes must see. Mostly because, like I said earlier, if you like the song, or are holding in a fart. With that said, "Learn to Swim," is a lyric because if Los Angeles gets sucked into the ocean, "Learn to swim, see you down at Arizona Bay!" the people of LA will have to learn to swim to survive. Now, the overall meaning of the song, has a lot to do with LA, itself, and nothing to do LA, itself. The recurring theme in most of Maynard's writing, since Aenima, is that humankind should become more. We won't. But, we should. We are untapped potential. Maynard laments this in most of his songs. In this song, which is largely based on comedian, Bill Hicks' standup, LA is a microcosm of our baser instincts. We yearn for the material. We yearn to be either accepted, or strive to be anti-accepted. Either way, the material governs us, or moreover, becomes the metric in which we measure one's shallow definition of success or being without success. I'll frame it this way...who has accomplished more in terms of substance? Mark Zuckerberg? or an elementary school teacher? If we measure by the material, it's not even a contest. However, if we measure by substance...well now...an entirely different conversation altogether. That's what this song is about. Why we will not become more. Why we are feeble as a species, and incapable of the ascension necessary to become....more.
New Tool reaction tomorrow (4/29). Sorry it has been so long. :)

Tool Eulogy really good song
On the list, thanks!
Thanks for watching my insanity unfold. :)
Learn to swim is for all the people in LA for when it drops into the ocean and creates Arizona Bay!
I love the pot too. Tool is such an awesome band and I love their song "The Pot" as well. *wink* couldn't help myself. sorry.
Hey hey hey hey😂 fkn love Maynard & his quirky shit.
Good stuff, really enjoyed this. The double listen is a good concept!
I’d suggest checking out:
-”46&2”
-”Parabol/Parabola” (that’s two titles that make up one song, it’s suggested to listen to both back to back)
-”Disposition/Reflection/Triad” (same thing here, three titles but basically one big song)
-”The Grudge”
Subbed, would love to see more Tool clips ✌🏼
Ps.
Try to avoid any music videos, they are super cool but they are pretty weirded out so the visuals will grab your attention and you’ll easily kinda miss the song.
Thanks for watching and for the song suggestions! :)
Great vid. If interested you should check out Lateralus, Schism, or Pneuma drum cam(live and awesome).
Thanks for watching and for the suggestions! :)
Sense you love bass, I would highly recommend Jambi on the 10,000 days album. If you haven't heard it yet. Also Invincible on the latest album.
Going on the list, thanks! :)
subbed! great reaction!:D I love how you drop your finger when the beat drops!:D you should never stop doing that! awesome:D
Thanks for watching! I wish that's why I did that. :) Actually that's just to help me out when editing. The only sound in the video is me talking. I have to add the song in later so that helps me line it up. Not nearly as cool.
@@MusicCatsandCoffee haha ah ok awesome:D well I found it really entertaining, cool and fun to watch:D hope to see more reactions! peace :D
Definitely more to come! Thanks for watching. :)
If you want a bass and drums band Tool is the band. :D
Well those are only my 2 favorite parts of a band! :)
San Andreas baby! I was surprised that for someone who wanted base you seemed to focus on a lot of other stuff, and in trying to work things out ( unsuccessfully) I think you missed your favorite bit...... hopefully you have found that since :)
Unsuccessful Lyrical Analysis is this channel's tagline. Didn't you know? :)
nice reaction, would be cool to see you give eulogy a listen, it's off the same album as this one (AEnema), one of my (many) favorite tool songs
Although I know a bit about earthquakes so "the big one" won't drown California, the big one is going to be either off Oregon, Washington or both simultaneously as a 9.0+
That makes sense to me. :)
"mother nature" , and how the singers dislike for California especially L.A.
It's all making sense now, thanks! :)
@@MusicCatsandCoffee it about society as a whole concentrating on all of the wrong things. You nailed it towards the end of the song in your commentary.
All Tool songs have a very good Bass, I recomend Schism, Reflection, 46&2, The Grudge, Fear inoculum, Descending, Right in two.
Going on the list, thanks! :)
Schism is the one with "I know the pieces fit". 😉👍
The ending is chaotic and painful because so will be our ending. If you do ...third eye....it will be the same in some places...because prying open your 3rd eye is sometimes uncomfortable
Not so sure I have one of those...
Arizona Bay was a Bill Hicks standup comedy album.
Tool is life
(Seatbelt buckles) Okay. Let's go.
You should definitely do the new album. You'll love it! Try "Invincible" off the album. Cheers! ✌🏼
Going on the list, thanks! :)
@@MusicCatsandCoffee Yay! Cheers ✌🏼
Should check out Bill Hicks "arizona bay". It's a stand up album that inspired much of the lyrics on this album. The intro from third eye is a direct sample.
Maybe, but no promises. :)
If you liked "The Pot," then you'll probably like Parabola and Vicarious by Tool.
Tool. Is. Epic.
if you like the voice than A perfect Circle and Puscifer is the bands for you to check out same singer
When it comes to Tool (or any song really)
Whatever you get from it, is right and true
That is the purpose of song
Dive in and take what you will
🎶🎼👽🎼🎶
Psst...46 & 2 will give you some BASS 😉😋
I think you're right, thanks! I'm looking forward to 46&2. That'll be my next Tool song. :)
next song by Tool sould be "46 & 2" ;-)
I've heard this title, but that's it. So you got it. :)
Excellent reaction. Mom nature...Peace
Thanks for watching! :)
Do so many TOOL songs. Go down the rabbit hole.
This is necessary.
Necessary, eh? Well I'll post one next week sometime. :)
@@MusicCatsandCoffee haha it's a lyric from an outro from their album undertow called disgustipated. Add it to the list haha.
LOL ok. I just thought you were a very passionate Tool fan. :D
When he says mom he's talking about mother earth
Do ticks and leaches! (Tool)
I love love the pot. I gotcha
the pot is definitely ear candy. this song isn’t as much ear candy as it is a story song. they’re trying to paint a very particular picture
Agreed.
Listen, analyze, listen again...keep going with this.
Stick with this album maybe a couple more songs? Maybe Eulogy, 46&2 and H.
The Pot, a great song yes, but will seem like child's play if you continue the TOOL journey.
That's a bold statement about The Pot! Judging by the comments, I'll try 46 & 2 next. :)
Don't think you look confused but just laser focused
Once in an interview, adam spelled the correct pronounce (as i remember, anyway), it is pronounced "onima", don't ask me why, i don't remember.
I love being a bass player!
I wish I was! :)
Going on the list, thanks! :)
The ending is the sound of Los Angeles's being flushed away. If you listen closely it the instruments sound like something spiraling down a drain.
@5:10 The story is that Maynard wrote these lyrics to vent his feelings after the band showed up to a gig only to discover that it was a Scientology event. Hence "Fuck L. Ron Hubbard and fuck all his clones" later in the song
@7:55 The "Learn to swim" line is because the song describes California suffering a massive earthquake that causes it to slide into the ocean . "Arizona Bay* alludes to Arizona being the new West Coast after this hoped-for natural disaster.
Have you heard "counting bodies like sheep to the rythem of the war drums" from Maynard's other band.
Nope, I haven't
Imagine it like the apocalypse
Subbed for more Tool please...
They're on the list, but so are many, many others. I'll definitely be doing 46&2 within...2 weeks? After that, who knows. :)
Mom= Mother Nature
Subscribed....listen to more tool 😉
More Tool next week. Thanks for the sub! :)
Mom’s gonna fix it all soon...yes she is.
A good Tool bass song... 46&2 but a hard one for lyrics lol
This will be my next one. Can't wait to look like a fool. :)
Mom came round to put it back the way it oughta be, with a pandemic lmaooo
“The speaker “ 😀
the vocals at the beginning that you missed "Hate, Hate, Hate, Hate" the middle part changes to "I hate It"
Maynard is being literal. He was California to fall into the ocean. See you down in Arizona Bay. 😂
Mom = Mother Earth
Mother earth.. "Mom".
Makes sense now. :)
Tool 46 and 2
This will be my next one. :)
Justin’s bass at 7:28 for a min or so...going hi n low...
