2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid vs. Honda Insight Comparison Review

  • If you have about $25 grand to spend and want a practical, fuel efficient car, a hybrid makes a lot of sense. Nothing to plug in, no real additional maintenance required, but a big bump in fuel economy figures. Sounds great, but which is the better buy between the new 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid, and the Honda Insight?

      I got mine Touring trim and the car on the 2nd tank got 47 miles per gallon and I drove very in enco mode I had a 2001 Ford expedition 5.4 V8 engine I got about eight maybe 10 miles on a good day 30 gallon tank got about 270 miles muscle tank. So my new car Insight touring is great very smooth and I have the extra 10 years. Or 100 thousands mile warranty on it tooo. There is always is a trade off on things. The seats are very Comfortable and I have a bad back to a knee replacement too cool car happy 😃

    I've had my 2019 Insight Touring since July 2019 and now have 20,000 miles. During the spring/summer months I regularly get between 58 to 62 mpg as I drive it in ECO mode all the time. From a stop I always drive away smoothly and then place it in adaptive cruise control most of the time even at slow speed as it maximizes fuel consumption. I also use the paddle shift every single time I brake and I also coast to red lights instead of heavy breaking at the last minute which cost most drivers a lot of mpg. I would probably get 65 to 70 mpg if I had the LX or EX model using my style of driving.

    The myth of hybrids is that driving in EV mode is a good thing. Speaking most generally, there are three paths energy can take from gasoline to wheels. In the Corolla, "Transmission" is the Power Split Device, which is essentially a differential. In the Insight, it is a clutch:
    1) Gas->Engine->Transmission->Wheels
    2) Gas->Engine->Generator->Inverters->Motor->Wheels.
    3) Gas->Engine->Generator->Inverter->Charge Battery->Time->Discharge Battery->Inverter->Motor->Wheels.
    There is a fourth, that is far less important than most people think. The energy actually comes from gas and is recovered from the wheels. But it is AT MOST 50% of what is currently there. It saves over a convetional car because it was energy that was thrown away, not because it is efficient on its own.
    4) Wheels->Generator->Inverter->Charge Battery->Time->Discharge Battery->Inverter->Motor->Wheels.
    Each arrow in these steps represents a place where loss occurs. The way hybrids gain efficiency, is that the Gas->Engine step can be up to twice as efficient in a Hybrid. It optimizes engine load by using more than one of these paths at a time. That is, if it had to use path #1 to maintain 30 mph the engine might be 20% efficient. But by using #1 and #3 at the same time, it can be 40% efficient.
    The point is that EV mode is the least efficient mode for any hybrid. Honda tells you that; Toyota lets you believe you are gaining when you are losing.
    +++++
    And all hybrids should use motor (the first half of step #4) braking whenever possible; I can't claim to know they all do. They mix motor and friction braking when you press the brake pedal, and apply some motor braking to simulate a conventional car's coasting when you aren't pressing either. Both of these cars do both of these things; the Insight lets you adjust the level of coasting with the regen paddles.
    es
    What the "B" mode does in the Corolla, is allow motor-braking to be used when you are coasting and the battery is full. In "D", it just stops using it. In "B", one motor generat electricity and the other spins the engine and get engine braking. The Insight does this automatically.

      I own a 2019 Insight EX and I agree the EX or LX would have been better. My car and I drive conservatively is easily 56 to 58 mpg's. I live in east Tennessee so I deal with a lot of steep hills and mountainous roads and that does take away from the mileage by a few miles. I'd like to think the Insight would have gotten the 55 mpg's in the comparison if it were the EX model.

Come on GET A GRIP both Honda and Toyota make great vehicles including hybrids. I wouldn't hesitate at all to buying either one. I presently have a 2019 Honda Insight Touring and I love it. I'm looking into getting an suv and seriously looking at getting the Rav4 hybrid and maybe even the Rav4 Prime. I personally don't like turbo engines so a few Honda models are eliminated from my list but that doesn't mean Hondas are bad, it's just my personal preference. I will be 70 years old soon and will be buying a new car soon. I purchased my current car, a 2003 Toyota Matrix XRS in March of 2003 when they first came out. It has a 6 speed manual which I love, but it has well over 200,000 miles on it and, though it still runs well, there are a number of small problems that need repair. The cost to fix them will be more than the car is worth and frankly it rattles a bit over bumps and has become noisier over the years. I really want a Civic SI for the sportiness and the manual transmission, but I have to consider how much longer I will be able to drive a manual. In my 53 years of driving there have been only maybe 6 years in which I did not have a car or truck with a manual transmission. I am very capable of driving the manual now, but who knows about 6 or 7 years from now. As you can see, I keep my cars for a while. My other choice is the Insight. Much less sporty, but very economical and the same size. I am waiting for the new cars to come out this fall and then I will drive both and decide.

    Had my Corolla Hybrid for 7 months now and am definitely in love with the fuel economy, I've already put 12,000 miles on it, and honestly wish I had discovered the Honda insight sooner. I would've chosen that one just because of the extra tech and different Trim levels they offer. Sure a 60 mpg is fantastic, but at the end of the day it depends on what you're doing in the car, like listening to music, and how long you're in it in cold weather, heated seats, and things like that. For me the insight would have been the better choice, but unfortunately I need to wait a bit since I literally had my other vehicle for 7 months before my corolla so I need to keep the Corolla for a little bit. But overall the review was fantastic and I'd still recommend the corolla hybrid over a normal gas powered sedan even if it's lacking in some departments.

    • @Jaxamuss
      @Jaxamuss 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@instasingingvids3529 Yeah I definitely agree. I was really sad to see that they only offered the one trim level. Especially because I love listening to music so I would've appreciated a better sound system and in the winters it gets fairly cold so heated seats would've been nice, and also because the xse corolla looks wayyyy better than the standard se one. And I know, because the RAV4 hybrid model gets all the same trim levels as well as the standard gas powered one. Toyota also decided not to put Android auto in the new corolla but the other 2020 models are getting it? Like I don't know what is going on with there decision making.

    I have 2020 Insight EX - No regrets. I'm more of a Honda fan but no one can knock any Toyota, as we all know. I wanted a full hybrid car, because full EV cars and even the "plug-in hybrids" get 'outdated' much faster. This is the first Hybrid I've ever owned, so I don't know how well this particular hybrid keeps its value. I love all the tech that the EX trim has, but if you can get a great deal on the Touring, it might be worth it. EX trim is an incredible value, IMO, just keep your expectations in-line with what you pay for, as these Insights aren't luxury or sporty cars. The Accord Hybrid is a bit more polished of a ride, but you pay for that. This is sort of a Civic quality with strong hints of an Accord. A great commuter car for budget minded buyers that want a sharp looking gas saver with modern technology and hopefully LOW cost of ownership / high reliability.

    Good comparo...does the Corolla Hybrid at least get a e-brake now?
    Here in Ontario, Canada, the Corolla Hybrid is an order and wait item while there are Insights available no problem. There is about a $5,000 differential from the Corolla Hybrid to the base Insight and about $9,000 to the Touring model. Our base is similar to the EX in the US. If you can find 2019 models the sale pricing closes the gap substantially.
    I am personally comparing the Prius Prime base to the Insight line up. The interior space aligns much better and so does the price. If the Insight had a plug and 8-10kwh battery it would destroy the Prius Prime in every aspect. But that is not the case, so it comes down to a choice of ultimate gas mileage in a low rent car that can drive as a slow EV for 40kms or great gas mileage in a well appointed base model or all the bells and whistles in the top model.

      Um, that's not exactly true. 2020 Corolla is a IIHS Top Safety Pick. Maybe you meant to say Top Safety Pick +
      Granted, they haven't tested the hybrid version yet. And Camry and Insight get a higher Pick + rating, but only because + vehicles have better headlights.

    B mode in the shifter is not generating power. It’s engine braking and it does not recover electricity. Only the wheels and brakes do that.
    The engine braking is for long slopes to brake gradually so it doesn’t burn out the brakes.
    Toyota themselves have a video explaining that B mode on the shifter DOES NOT recharge the batteries and if used all the time it will do damage to the engine

    calculated the mpg by using the pump and not the mpg gauge on the dash as most are not accurate. I have viewed many reviews on hybrid were the author never mentions how many mpg he or she achieved while driving the vehicle.
    People who buy hybrid's buy them for the #1 reason for fuel economy, and any review should always include mpg obtained in the review and if not the review is a fail in my book.

    DO NOT BUY THE HONDA INSIGHT LEMON!!!!!
    I purchased the 2022 Insight Touring package three weeks ago. I purchased it for a daily driver and for road trips around Oregon, specifically to Mt Hood where my family has a tiny ski cabin.
    With guests in the vehicle, it is unable to achieve and maintain highway speeds without the engine redlining with any more than one person in the car. It can barely make it up the 2-3% graded area, and I was terrified to try the 6% graded area. It felt INCREDIBLY unsafe and underpowered. My brother and I both thought something was slipping. The engine revs dramatically and almost no power is sent to the wheels.
    I have no idea how I can use it to carpool. If you know the Portland area, it struggles to get up the west hills of through the tunnel up to Skyline on the way to Beaverton with just me (155 lbs). If I had two people or more in the car, I would feel horribly unsafe.
    I took it to the shop and they said it was working as designed. This is completely unacceptable!
    If you live in a completely flat area or only drive on city streets, yeah it will probably be fine. If you have any hills whatsoever, you are fucked.

    You should have compared the Corolla to the Insight EX because the LX and EX are closer to the Corolla specifications and the LX and EX simply get better gas mileage compared to the Corolla. My 2019 Insight EX has more power than the Corolla and just yesterday I made a 60 mile trip and got 66.6 miles per gallon. I gave you a thumbs down because you didn't do a fair comparison, the LX and EX gets better gas mileage, the Touring is a little bit heavier and also has bigger tires meaning the mpg's will be less than the Insight LX or EX which is closer to the Toyota Corolla. Like so many reviews you end up getting less mileage per gallon than real world drivers, 60mpg for a tank of gas is what I average, on short trips like the one I took yesterday I got 66.6 and on even longer trips I've gotten 69.6 mpg. I you want the best gas mileage drive a hybrid like it's meant to be.

      Honda only supplied the Touring as a press release car as the EX would have been less pleasing in a comparison test. Add the long term use of the two and the overall better reliability of Toyota and you have a clear winner, Honda cannot make up its mind in the hybrid business...they have bounced in and out every couple years.

    As others have said I think the EX is a better comparison but I read in another comment he tried to get that one and they didn't have it. Honestly Insight wins for me. Its all the benefits of a normal comfortable decent looking car but gets twice as good of gas mileage. Yea sure it may be as many as 5-10 mpgs behind the Corolla but cmon 50 is mpgs is still damn good when normal cars get 20-30. I definitely would be happier having the overall nicer car for the same price. And the Insight is just normal car slow. The Corolla and Prius are in a tier of slow all their own. Compared to the Dodge Dart I drive around that gets 23-24mpg in town the Insight would feel like a giant leap forward.

      @@danr154 When the motor kicks in going up hills, and when you really need extra extra power, you'll hear that loud droning sound that make you think the car is working too hard. Such a contrast to the whisper quiet you get when the power is NOT needed....It is what it is when it comes to that. Definitely test drive going up hill, some may be turned off by that noise, but you'll love going down those mountain roads. At the end of the day, its a budget hybrid, so mountain driving performance won't be ideal, but depends on your expectations. I wouldnt use ECON mode going up steep inclines, you can still have some passing power in POWER mode, on steep inclines, no problem

      Thanks for the input. Yea I have to decide how much I truly care about gas savings either way. I really don't "go for drives". The canyons in Utah scare me as much as entice me. Yea you could carve them up and have fun till you invariably meet some big-ass f-250 coming around a blind bend the other way eating up your already-narrow lane in canyons that feel like walls closing in sometimes. Plus the pandemic, I only drove about 7500 miles this year. So at that rate maybe I shouldn't even care about gas. I just want something more safe, comfortable, and reliable than a Dart. Im looking at other non-hybrids too like the new Mazda3 AWD. I really don't like the looks of a fair number of Hondas and Toyotas the Insight being an exception. I will be in position to really go to a dealership in about another year hopefully so I will definitely give one of these a look. Maybe the Accord Hybrid too it just looks a little odd sometimes but actually kinda cool other times and I cant decide if I like it enough, maybe it would just have to speced a specific way and I'd go for it.

    Right now I am not too happy with Toyota's quality. I have a 2014 Prius C, with 96K km. Found out few days ago that the engine timing chain cover has an oil leak. That'll be a costly repair. I had always thought Toyotas have very reliable engines, but that is not true.

      Whatever. I'm an auto mechanic at a mega dealer that sells Toyota, Honda, Subaru, VW, Hyundai and Dodge/Ram trucks. Hate to tell you, there will always be a small percentage of every auto maker having engine problems. Toyota and Hondas are reliable but not immune from issues. VW actually has reliable engines but they tend to have more electrical and engine sensor issues than Toyota and Honda. Dodge and Ram trucks are crap at low and high miles

    Mpg over the life of car is 50.2, mpg this trip is 57.4 after 280 miles
    Not using cruise drastically increases mpg

    I don’t really agree with this testing methodology. Firstly if you’re going to place a big emphasis on mpg you should test one of the Insight trims that get higher mpg, which are also the more popular choices.
    Secondly if you’re going to test “real world” mpg you should just put it in drive and go, very few people will be trying to hypermile like this.

Considering Honda basically offers three “similar” hybrids, Accord, Insight, and Clarity, you’d think they would throw in a hatchback somewhere in the mix. Especially, as the data suggests, sedan sales are declining. Even a Corolla hatchback hybrid would be nice, although I guess that’s what the Prius is for... the push button transmission takes a little getting used to but it’s all that bad...(our Odyssey has it). The ride, handling & option preferences for the Honda would have been significantly minimised. What is indisputable?
