    Welcome back!
Moldy and rusty rods--this is a REAL welding channel!!!
And older self-taught welder I knew (he made log splitters (fabbed up from mostly junkyard parts) and did tractor/farm implement repairs in his retirement used whatever he could make work. He didn't know squat about rod numbers but what he sorted out by trying them. I saw all sorts of odd rods in his "rod locker" (steel shelving in an uninsulated building). I'd ask about them, he'd tell me he found them. He was a pretty good welder and also did a lot of grinding and paint. He left school in the 8th grade and built houses (even my house) in his earlier days. I know he welded with some old nasty rods, and got the work done.

Thanks! I'm 73 and hated that I never learned to work metal. I bought a multi welder mig/stick/tight and a plasma cutter this Feb (birthday to myself). I can do some ugly work., but was pretty frustrated cause my stick kept getting stuck. I watched your flick thing, went outside and flicked away. Now I can start 6011, 7014 and probably all of them OK. Thanks again, great info. Love the channel. "Stickit"!!

I wish there were videos like this when I started. You especially can explain the tips and tricks in a was to understand manner that a lot of guys can’t. Keep up the great videos brother and God Bless.

This is the kinda stuff us young guys need, I’ve been practicing just as you said but my issue is my arc just does not wanna stay lit. I’ll throw down a nasty slug but somewhere down the line it almost feels like my arc starts getting smaller and smaller until I stick it. Also I had no clue they made stingers like that, my class has stingers that look like a cows upper mouth from how worn they are.

Could be a bad batch of rods; or you’re using one of those Chinese inverter machines from Amazon. If you’re using a cheap Chinese inverter machine; buy one more, and connect them in series. Set them both at about the same setting, no need to be precise, this set up will give you enough open circuit voltage (OCV) to burn any rod out there, bad batch or not.

I used to hate 6013 till a friend in the UK told me about Esab brand Sureweld 6013. They do code pipe with 6013 over there. He said that's all they use is the Esab 6013. I tried some ordered from Amazon. He was right even uphill and overhead they run like butter on toast man almost as nice as Excalibur 7018. Man I couldn't believe it. So just a thought.
