  • Republican senators blocked a Democratic-led attempt Tuesday to pass legislation that would have restored a Trump-era ban on bump stocks, an accessory that enables semi-automatic weapons to shoot at a very rapid pace. CBS News congressional correspondent Scott MacFarlane is unpacking the latest headlines from Capitol Hill.

That's called being part of a civilized society. We forgo some freedoms for the safety and prosperity of all.
We identify a problem and make regulations to curve the behavior and set penalties for doing so.
If "criminals don't follow the law anyway" was a legitimate argument, we wouldn't have a single law nor government nor cops. Do you have kids? Lets do grenades. The National Firearms Act (NFA), enacted in 1934, was amended by the Crime Control Act of 1968. The 1968 revisions made it illegal to own “destructive devices,” including grenades. (26 U.S.C. § 5801.)
So no, you can't buy them nor can i find anything stating you can own them if grandfathered like say a full automatic rifle. This does not include smoke grenades.
Full automatic fire means the weapon system continues to cycle as long as the trigger is depressed. Semi means only a single round, or a burst of 3 depending on which definition is used (military considers 3 round burst semi and the NFA law considers it automatic) per trigger pull and the trigger must be depressed again to fire another round.
AR means Armalite who was the original company to design the AR-15 rifle, as in Armalite model 15. They sold the patent and remaining stock to Colt Arms as they went out of biz. Colt redesigned the weapon system for jungle warfare for the Army & Marines during Vietnam.
My name is Sgt Allan Alcibar, USMC machine gunner, combat instructor, and war veteran. You were insulting me pretty confidently . This is the technicality that the law was dismissed under. The spirit of the law is to stop weapon systems that can fire so quickly. But lawyers find loopholes.
The device cannot be labeled a machine gun per any definition, and it was a mistake to write the law banning it in such a way to rely on it being treated as such.
