I’m Thai and I’ve travelled by an overnight sleeper train just like you guys but to Chiang Mai. I found it pretty nice despite its hygiene and being late. Thai trains do have issues on being punctual. I believe that trains to the north have little delay compared to those to the south which I experienced 3hr delay to Suratthani. Yet, it provided feelings that differ from other transportation modes. For instance, some local people will jump on the train the sell food. Besides, the scenery just outside the window was amazing. If your schedule is flexible enough to be late for couple hours, I would suggest you to try it. Btw, traveling by the train, you be careful of belongings to avoid robbery that could occur. Have a great time in Thailand and thanks for the visit!

Right now, the entire Thai railway is undergoing a duable track nationwide. And will supply the locomotive along with the electrical system before the completion of the next three years. And another eight years with high-speed trains to Surat Thani Sorry for the inconvenience in traveling at this time.
