Havn’t forgot, at 3000 miles from last oil change I’ll send off for testing and share. I want to do a 3K, 4K, and 5K test for my piece of mind. I am using all Ford OEM filters, but at 1000 miles I switched to full Motocraft synthetic. Probably next week or two I’ll be at 3000, and I’ll share the results.

If your engine is healthy and you aren’t doing literal SEVERE duty driving conditions, you’d be surprised by how long the oil can go.
Now if your engine isn’t 100% healthy, yes, you can’t go longer then 3k miles because the engine is tearing up the engine and there’s a ton of metal in the oil that needs to be drained out because the filter can’t filter everything.

    • @cfzippo
      @cfzippo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@I_know_what_im_talking_about I will almost completely disagree, with these eco boost GDI engines. High pressure fuel dilutes the oil past the rings, far sooner than non-GDI. “Healthy” included. If you want to keep your turbocharged GDI engine going past 200,000 miles, you’d better not go past 5000 mile OIC. Or you might be “surprised” how few miles you get before your engine craps out. Oil changes are cheep. New Ecoboost engines are expensive. Up to you…it’s your engine…

At the factory we had "Plant Oil" and "Wall Oil". Our illiterate boss (not a joke) called us into a meeting to describe that we were "so green" that our polluting engines (fined by the EPA for non-compliance) were "so clean", because we burned the pollutants from the air ...and left the exhaust so fresh and pure. Not only that, we used "Plant Oil" that is made from fruits and vegetables inside our engines.
Um, Valvoline in bulk tankers is not oil that comes from fruits and vegetables. That "Plant Oil" is normal engine oil with a UV dye added for leak checks at the end of the assembly line and the end of dyno test, before a full washing, drying, and painting. "Plant" meant manufacturing plant, not plant with green leaves that grows fruits and vegetables.
The other type of oil was "Wall Oil". Wall oil came from the back wall in the laboratory. Wall oil was the same Valvoline oil, minus the UV dye. That oil was used for engine assembly to not confuse residual oil from assembly with an engine oil leak that was checked for at the end.
Only mismanagement could be that not smart. ...And mismanagement wondered why the engine business closed. Incompetence, corruption, and not being able to pass emission standards has a way of ending a Fortune 500 company's engine business for good. We went from the biggest engine manufacturer in our class to closed for good in 15 years, one day of producing poor engines after another, a day at a time. 340k engines a year ...to nothing, closed. Gone.

I wonder what the difference is between US vehicle usage versus European. Here in the UK, the normal oil change interval for most vehicles is 12,000 miles. Some VW vehicles that are used for high annual mileages can use a special oil that permits changes to be extended to 20,000 miles.
I have no reason to believe that engines die more quickly here; I know of a VW T4 Transporter van that had no engine or transmission work other than maintenance, and was still running fine and not burning oil after 300,000 miles.
Perhaps the fuel dilution might be due to multiple short trips? It's not so common here to use your car for multiple short journeys, so perhaps the oil gets hot enough to boil out the fuel dilution.

According to the engineer that designed Nissan's best Z motors, "use the cheapest oil you can find, but change it every 2000 -3000 miles." Lake Speed Jr. also found a huge amount of (microscopic) debris in his daughter's new engine at 700+ miles. So I don't think you can trust the OEM recommendations for anything anymore since the EPA is essentially dictating the viscosity and frequency of oil change specifications. I'm wondering if so many issues relating to new engines have been exasperated by recommended maintenance schedules. It's also recommended to use a high quality fuel additive whenever you do an oil change, to keep your injectors clean.

The turbo needs to be lubricated and it runs very hot, and the oil in the crankcase gets more exhaust and unburned fuel in it via piston blowby, causing it to become acidic faster.

I think you are confusing the word BULK OIL with BUNKER OIL. Bunker oil is a real thick hardly refined at all oil. The oil co basically filters out all the solids & sells it. Locomotives & ships burn Bunker C oil as fuel as it is REAL cheap. BULK simply means a large quantity. The bulk oil dealerships use is the same oil they sell in a quart or 5 quart bottles but it is delivered to the dealerships in 55 gallon drums because they use so much of it that it would be an environmental disaster if they were popping open plastic bottles for every quart or 5 they use.
Yes, it is good to use. BUT, who needs a 55 gallon drum of motor oil in their garage? Just imagine the $$.

I have a 6 year old direct injected turbocharged 2.0L motor which has some custom parts and a custom tune on it pushing it to 350hp at the wheels. I change the oil every 3k miles with Pennzoil Platinum and get a blackstone UOA every other oil change. If you want your direct injected turbocharged motor to last a long time, change the motor oil frequently and clean your intake valves often as well, I do mine every 30k miles and even with an expensive aftermarket air/oil separator on it there is significant carbon buildup. I did the math and had I changed it every 5k miles like the manufacturer recommends I would have saved about $700 overall doing it myself but to me it's worth it because my car runs perfect and every UOA I get back has excellent readings.

Most people don't realize that in town driving really should be considered 'severe' duty. Personally I wouldn't use anything lest than a full synthetic for a boosted engine, Or any modern engine at this point. Synthetic is worth the extra few bucks.

Love these Motor Oil Analysis Videos !! When I was younger I spent a lot of time in a friend's automotive machine shop. Always believed in proper oil change interval extends engine life . Once manufacture's started using boosted engine's I never believed their oil change intervals. When Cylinder pressures increase on these engine 's -- rings have a much harder job sealing ( not to mention detonation increases) some gasses from combustion will seep past rings contaminating oil. Never thought manufacture's oil change interval took this into consideration. If you think this is bad on a gasoline burning , you should see what an Alcohol burning engine does to motor oil. Keep up the good work !!!

Good explanation of how a UOA is worth the $25 or so that it costs, especially while your motor is new and still breaking in, and under warranty. Know what you are running and know what it looks like at a certain OCI, and adjust accordingly if you want to try and push out your interval. If fuel dilution is such a rampant thing with these twin-turbo EcoBoosts, I don't know why Ford doesn't suggest running a 40w oil such as an ACEA C3 spec; maybe an A3/B4 depending upon the specific specs. I don't want the the 30w to shear into a 20w. Ford says as much for the former V6 diesel they used to offer in the F-150: owners manual says if you run biodiesel (doesn't ask how much) then run a 5w-40. FCA did this on their V6 turbodiesel, as well.

I work at BP oil labs as a lead mechanical engineer.
There is federal minimum standard for motor oil that has to be met before it can made for customers.
We have to send our test results to a federal facility and some samples for them to test.
All motor oil is made to the same standards, some have more addictives for better protection.
So the cheapo walmart synthetic oil is good up to 5000 miles.
For my experience, Toyota motor oil is the best.
It is 85% effective up to 8330 miles before wear protection is not there.

He specializes in Toyotas and he recently made an interesting video on service recommendations for early model Toyota Camry and Modern Camry sedans. People were saying the older Camry's lasted longer well when you go back the service recommendations were very strict and the modern Camry's had gotten less strict. So it goes to show strict maintenance is the key if you want an engine to last many years and get a lot of milage. Good stuff! I personally am not a fan of modern Ford engines, but you are spot on when it comes to service. I do not hate Ford, but I have ran into quality control issues and even other Ford techs have questioned Ford's quality control and design choices as of late. The dealerships get it from a bulk oils supplier in there area . Anyway oil testing is great if you can understand what you are reading . It will show bearing material , fuel , antifreeze , a long with other contaminates in the used oil . It is up to you to know what is normal for that engine .
