Good kit. I like to pack everything in zip lock bags and label them, Fire kit, Med Kit, Tool kit, Food, Water purification, etc. I do that so if I haven't gone through my kit in a while its easy to find exactly what I need or if I was busy or unable too, then someone else can find an item quickly, especially in an emergency.

Nice! We must be on the same wavelength as I have thinking about alternate uses for ammo crates (the metal ones) as well for a few on sale over the weekend. amazing how much stuff you can cram into one. May be a neat project to spray paint them according to urban prepper color coding system and design a whole long term survival stack. PS not sure why youtube randomly unsubs me from channels but you were one of them resubbed!

That's actually how I started watching videos like this: those silly Altoids survival tin videos are like multi dimensional puzzles and some of them (Urban Prepper especially) are like savant-level creations.
Those videos somehow eventually led me to your channel through the youtubes maze. Always a nice way to spend the subway commute.

I totally agree with the cell phone for more than 1 reason. #1, you want to make every effort to survive and communication with help is paramount. #2, if it has a built in GPS you can be located. #3, it's a "Car Survival Kit" not a wilderness kit so weight isn't an issue. Nice job Chris.

Nice kit, I've some of the same items, I'm using a medium size backpack if I have to leave my vehicle, I want an easy to carry backpack. I also use a Food Saver cryovac system (NOT a bag sealer, not the same thing at all) to airtight seal anything that will degrade because of temperature or time or due to moisture. cryovacing will extend the life of foods of any kind so that your not replacing items every few months. For instance you can cryovac nuts and seeds, make homemade protein cookies or bars ..etc. and they will last 2-3 years. you can seal purified water for eye or would washing, the possibilities are endless. Making bags of any size is easy and compresses things like hats and gloves to a bare minimum. Keeps tinder and fires tarting materials moisture free. Fresh Cyan pepper is handy in a cold to very cold climate, rubbing it onto feet and hands will keep the flesh from freezing, don't pick your nose or rub your eyes until you have washed your hands well, again cryovac the cyan pepper and it will last for at least two years. In my area above the 49th parallel we get severe cold temperatures. Having slow burning candles can save your life. If you are forced out of your vehicle and need to dig a snow den, you need a candle to warm the interior and to create an icecap to strengthen the den from collapse. I have a small flare gun and four good long burning highway flares and a high quality mirror. Hope this helps and spark other ideas.

That's what they should do if they ever reboot "Dual Survival". There really isn't such a thing as "military survival" beyond SERE stuff. What they should do is a Bushcrafter paired with a Prepper. AND let them have what they would have, not this silly MacGuyver crap. That's a false stereotype...survivability via MacGuyverism.

I would include the Firebox because it has multiple uses. Minimizes firewood usage but cooks, purifies water, and provides a great heat source which helps the morale. The weight is a con, but are we hiking a trail or trying to cope with an emergency situation.

Chris, it's a very good kit, no doubt! Probably excellent compared to other kits around poorly made! I particularly like your multivitamin or multi-energy what have you addition! Food abundance and fire subkit are great! But let me try to make some suggestions on the whole box! Next time, you might also add:
    1) Needle/thread/repair little kit
    2) Your local and regional MAPS (this addition makes you feel very secure, to say the very least)
    3) Signal mirror and make sure you always have a strobe light capability on your head lamp (day and night signaling)!
    4) A couple of plain space blankets (all purpose uses)
    5) A small assortment of waterproof plastic and dry bags, millions of uses!
    6) Extra socks, underwear, beanie, black long johns and upper body merino wool/synthetic base layer (premade clothes subkit)
    7) A couple of rat traps
    8) A military poncho and a good headnet
    9) Insect repellent and sunscreen (small tubes) in the FIK
    10) A small bottle of good comfort red wine (I am not joking)! :)
That' s it, your car kit in an ammo box absolutely done (for the time being)!
Thanks for the video, it helped a lot!
Your channel is very helpful always, I 've watched tens of videos!

I am building a SHTF box for burying on my "Bug out" route, if I need to leave my house with basically nothing. Although I have survival knowledge for my area ( I am in the UK), you can never have enough knowledge or need to double check, such as First Aid . In light of that I am also packing a small solar panel that connects directly to the fittings for my battery bank or phone ( can also be clipped to the rear of my backpack when on the move and charge items on the go in daylight, not just sunlight and recharge my battery bank if needed).
I am also packing in my box my spare Kindle as it is loaded with 550 e-books for pretty much everything survival related, including First Aid, Wild foods, Skinning animals, etc. and also a few general reading novels, but it is also a comfort item of some sort of normality, by being out of the way, sitting around reading in front of a fire, having a coffee, when all around you is going to crap and it can be recharged directly from the battery bank or a slower charge via daylight from solar panel.
Having both a Battery Bank and a small solar charger that fits my Kindle/Phone/Battery Bank gives me options and allows more flexibility when charging devices.

I half-ass agree with Will about the Firebox. I have that one and the Nano in Titanium. I would ditch the big one and put the Nano in. It will do everything that you wanted the big one to do for way less weight and room. With the room and weight you save you could include a trangia and some fuel for a super quick cooking flame. Nice video.

I have to weigh in here (pun intended). I just received my Firebox stove from the latest Kickstarter campaign. I got the extra rods and grill plate option. All in, the stove weighs 2 pounds, 14 ounces! Lord knows I like a solidly built item, and i AM happy with my purchase, but at almost 3 pounds I can see why he'd leave it out and I will have to do some thinking on how I might hike with this. That's a quart and a half of water worth of weight . . .
Great video, lots to learn, thanks.

Nice! Been meaning to get a car kit together, and now I have a solid plan. Thanks Chris! My personal opinion -- its an emergency kit for the car, not for EDC - so I don't feel that its weight should be of primary concern. I agree more with you, meaning better to go a little heavy and have what you need AND may want without taking up additional space. Also, just wondering if there's a way to leverage the space in the lid. if not for more stuff, maybe for better organization? I don't know, just a thought. Be well! Thanks again!

Survival kits need the basic items......first aid kit, fire starter, knife, water container and purification, light, etc. The rest is personal and situational according to the type of kit. Don't let some "expert" influence your kit. Different situations call for different kits.....i.e. car kit, bug out kit, etc. Make your kit for your own use and situation.

I s the same reason I carry a bic lighter. I can make fire with sticks and stones, but if I'm stressed, give me the bic and mini stove.

I swapped out for the emberlit, w which is thinner and lighter. I'm keeping it too. I think Will was in his "Bushcrafter-pack" mode, and I'm building a universal emergency kit. You can accomplish a lot with less wood with one of those stoves.

Definitely agree with this thought process. I'm a woodsman at heart, but until I started thinking about what you were teaching, urban sure val or emergenci s, I realized how under prepared I really was. Due to certain med probs, your med video was super important to me. There's a guy at the gun show who sells all med equipment, including any hos "turnies" . just a little thing outside the box and the hat info could actually sav e my life in this case....group at stuff.....will check out emberlit. The one I have now was from the show and is very clunky. That and the survival straw will be the next pickups...later Chris....PAPA DUKES

Good kit and video. Since this is a car kit, I'm guessing you'd stay with the vehicle and use it for shelter wouldn't you? Also, you have mirrors on the vehicle that you could use for signaling, so not packing one isn't a deal breaker in my book. It wouldn't hurt to have a length of hose to siphon fuel from your tank to start a fire if it came down to that and your vehicle wasn't running. I do agree about dropping that stove. I was never big on all those stoves and humping around the extra weight. I would add a 50 hour liquid candle for sure. Keep up the great work.

What about a stainless Mora dedicated for food prep and smaller tasks to avoid the corrosion treatment potions on the carbon steel blades?
For first aid, I keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer in most of my kits. The 20% benzocaine Vagisil type ointment is a decent topical anesthetic for those times when you need to staple yourself up (tested). It's also effective for burns and itching rashes.
For the big steel, the OKC SP8 cleaver like thing is good for many tasks, but it will wear out a few worksharp belts before you get the edge angle right. Too thick to be a proper machete, but it's a pretty darn good hatchet. It's also a batoning beast and dual bevel chisel. Come on OKC, it's 1095 with a good heat treat; put a narrower edge on it at the factory.
These are in my kit, and maybe something to consider for others.

Taking the battery out of that cell phone will get a bit more time out of it in storage, but I wouldn't trust it to hold a charge any longer than 2-3 weeks even then, especially if this kit would be in a car during cold weather. I've had camera batteries still run after more than a year of storage indoors without charging, but it's still an iffy idea to store a proprietary battery beyond a few weeks and expect it to have any juice, especially with cold storage temperatures. The Anker makes this point a little redundant so long as it's kept charged, but it's a consideration for folks who don't pack one.
We had an old trick at my family's cell phone office (way back when cellular providers still had independent offices). If a battery was dead and we didn't have the right tip for the AC adapter for said phone, letting the battery warm up against a running coffee pot usually got us enough juice to make sure the phone worked. Those toe warmers might give off enough heat to at least get a text out from a flip phone, but smartphones take way too much juice to entertain that idea with them. Not sure I'd trust that trick with my survival, though.

Thanks for this presentation. I enjoyed the item by item discussion by two experienced people. As you have stated several times kits will vary depending on where a person is located. I've always lived in the west, that is west of Interstate Highway 25. Hehe, the western boundary of the eastern U.S. is located on the eastern portion of the perimeter fence of Denver International Airport! The result is that each of our 3 cars has 3 gallons of water in them. I can't keep up with changing the water and cleaning the canteens and bottles I carry water in every 6 months as is often suggested so I do a thorough cleaning/disinfecting every year. I should borrow someone's pool water kit one of these days to see how much residual chlorine exists at one year.
Three things struck me in what you included in this kit. First, the nicotine. This is a vascular constrictor that has significant effects on the body's natural thermostat. So it quickly (in seconds) reduces the temperature of appendages when ingested. I would recommend not using it when the possibility of hypothermia exists, which can extend into the mid 50 to 60 degree range. Second, the item containing caffeine. This is a diuretic and when dehydration is a possibility, as it often is in the west, I would recommend abstaining its use. Third, in almost every case, especially for people who are inexperienced in survival, search and rescue organizations and other emergency services tell people they should stay in one place and in the case of having a vehicle, staying with it. I've built my emergency kits to reflect a vehicular "shelter in place" situation.
Lastly, don't go cheap on compasses. The compass you included in the revised kit looks like a large version of a compass that may have been included in cereal boxes in the 1950's. I will repeat myself, get a compass that has a mirror for sighting accurate readings. The compass mirror can be used as an excellent sighting mirror as the line on the mirror and the notch in the case provide an excellent way to aim the mirror at aircraft and targets on the ground. You spent a fair share of money on knives and saws, but you don't do the same for compasses, not even close. I will admit I have a bias as I have a B.S. in Forestry and my greatest natural talent happens to be orienteering, which is not an opinion, but has been borne out in testing. Anytime a compass, map or aerial photography is involved I excel. Of course, I can't dance or make small talk at a party to save my life, so something had to give!

Thanks! Plz keep the vids coming!

Love you guys videos and some of your differing survival philosophies. I take slight issue with Will and his marginalization of carrying a good first aid kit. You can't on the one hand say.. Carry a lighter instead of relying on a fire steel or bow drill set. Both you can make fire with especially if not under stress. The reverse is also true in carrying a first aid kit as apposed to looking for plantain to staunch bleeding or willow bark to lessen pain. In a survival situation it just makes more sense to have "sure fire" first aid for those circumstances .

No that's not it at all... If the plants are available then I will use them but I carry things in my pack such as spices and other things that are used for first aid

I would add some money to get you home when you do make it back to civilisation. 5x$20 should be an almost guarantee to keep you alive until you can make it home. As added bonus, you can tap into it if you have car trouble in an urban setting.

fun video! awsome knife, i am jealous. watching this video i actually thought of things i don't actually have in my emergency get home bag. obviously, we all have different needs. i work in detroit 20 miles from my home in the suburbs. walking and moving is a big part of my survival. my thoughts: 1) a draw string backpack, or some type of bag, how many miles can u hump that ammo can? 2) handgun, the ultimate survival tool 3) cash, a couple of $5 bills could come in handy on your mission to get home or get some help 4) dry socks in ziplock 5) ski hat, we never dress warm enough going to work

Nice video, good gear, in my opinion if it fits in side the box, and has a use and makes life a little easier it makes sense to have it. Why leave it at home? Nothing like a few creature comforts when the shit hits the fan. It's the small things that matter when your cold hungry and wet. Good work. Keep the vids coming. I always pick up at least one thing from your vids. Cheers.

You need to make a small addition of a strap to carry the kit in such a way the handle won't be torn off. You never know when you might have a situation where you have to grab your kit, and other items (luggage or a hurt person) and go. A way to carry the kit on your body without requiring a hand , would be a good addition. Perhaps an old guitar strap and some 550 cord?

Not every one would or does. I can see making up kits like this for family members. And if it was in a pack, they would remove it without thinking about it. Also, if it was in a pack, it they already had another pack they had to carry, I think using a simple strap would make it easier to carry.

What do you guys think about a bag of unpopped popcorn for your kit? Might sound dumb but hear me out. When easily popped over a fire it is very aromatic and could be used to bait traps, lure birds, floating fish hooks, etc...and if all else fails you pop it and eat it. I thought of this after watching my 5 & 3 year old daughters use pop corn to lure ducks & squirrels within grabbing distance, and fish to the surface of a pond. Maybe it's a silly idea but I thought it had potential.

I cant see anything that needs changed, the prioritites are spot on. question... is it possible to make a compact minimal space and weight kit for a family of four? my wife and kids are not into emergency readiness. as husband and father it is my responsibility to take care of them, but am finding the size and weight of a kit for a family grows quickly.

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  8 ปีที่แล้ว

It does. I comes down to the fact that you are probably going to be lacking in SOMETHING. With kids and stuff, it's good to have a psychological comfort element as well. Cheap prepaid android phone loaded with games and Anker batteries, favorite blanket, etc. Just get a pen and a paper and ask yourself, "How will MY family act if ______ happens?" Now what can I do to minimize that?

    • @johndoes5732
      @johndoes5732 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+PREPAREDMIND101 thanks, my kids DO get whiney if they are not in a constant state of being entertained. that in turn frustrates me and mental focus goes out the window. those power foods are a great idea for feeding the family quickly, to cut down on the i'm hungry daddy.

awesome kit. everything has a use. the only thing that I have to say is that will is so quick to 86 a good amount of gear. not thinking why you have the kit in the 1st place. its an emergency kit. and im trying to to be negative here just what I see in your vids. he's a super knowledgeable guy and can outlast most of us in woodland settings. but this is an emergency kit. you may actually have 1 of the many issues that you are preparing for and not be able to actually find the things you need out in the wild. a broken leg or the sever arterial bleeding or a hand injury (just giving examples) like mentioned in the video will keep you pretty immobile where you aren't able to scavenge many of the things that were pushed aside. you may also not have your day bag or 'go bag' and not have a lot of the things you normally carry. sorry about being long winded and this is not a dig on will at all.

For your Fire Kit maybe add a Pencil Sharpener. For my Swedish Fire Steel I added the large yellow plastic Hanson Pencil Sharpener from Home Depot to the cordage loop. Like your Mil. Spec. Kyocera Duramax (ebay less than $20.00 USD) clamshell cellphone that meets or exceeds Military Standard 810G and IP Certified. The phone has a micro USB charge port and eight (8) hours of talk time for the chatty types ! Hope you are not paying for the phone you are not using. Use the phone for calling 9-1-1 or have a prepaid card or take a sim card from a broke phone... Why not a metal ammo can ? Also a stove will use one half the fuel of an open campfire and save a forest. My EDC Go Bag/Get Home Bag is the Maxpedition Textudo Laptop Backpack bag that fits a 17" or smaller laptop and the big pocket inside the bag fits the AR500 soft Backpack Level IIIA Armor. Thank you for the video ! tjl

There's actually three different ways to signal somebody in this video. All three tens are high reflective metallic material which you could use as a signaling mirror for passing airplanes helicopters gliders and anybody else up in the air the mirror Factor alone hun them is very high flashing the lights you were using on an overcast day was reflecting off of them

First I would use a Metal Ammo Can... And have protection for the electronics. Have an Emberlit in Ti and is low in weight. Also some places BAN open campfires ! A stove will cut fuel use in half ! ! ! For electronics also use an AM/FM/WB digital radio, LED flashlight, Headlight with a Red LED and a Mil. Spec. cell phone. If you have a company phone, then maybe get a Sat Phone for about $40.00 USD a month after paid for... tjl

hey guys great vid! i was wondering, Will im digging the confidence on not needing all that you said u would remove, but (and im not doubting u, if u can make it in the marshes of the everglades in south florida im sure u can hang anywhere) thats if u know the area, what is your take if u drive somewhere that u may not know too well, or worse u r visiting someone in a location u are not familiar with and they have Chris's box basically would the contents still be removed at that point? just asking.
