    • @Bacteriophagebs
      @Bacteriophagebs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on the bullet. LOTS of bullets expand at subsonic speeds, but these were clearly not designed for that. Since most .50 bullets are intended for .50 AE and .500 Magnum, which throw 350-grainers at 1300+ and 1800+ fps respectively, using these bullets in the subsonic Special was either lazy or stupid on the ammo maker's part.

      It's one of the most versatile rounds, there's rounds that are more manageable than others that don't seem like extreme overkill for certain applications, but some pack enough punch to take down a bull, they're no joke. 45 ACP is still going to be best for use against humans overall for most people but definitely isn't nearly enough for other applications.
      I suppose a gun that can fire 45 Colt, 454 Casull, and 410 is going to be more versatile yet if I could only have one handgun.

    The .500 Special is basically a fatter Colt .45, about same muzzle velocity but with a projectile that's ~50gr heavier. I've always liked it, it won't blow out your ears on the range, and for target shooting up to 20 yards you really can't tell a difference in accuracy, except there's >50% less recoil and you can get away with using regular safety muffs w/o plugs.

    • @Bacteriophagebs
      @Bacteriophagebs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Standard-pressure .44 magnum fires a 355-grain bullet at 950-1050 fps, so .500 Special is right on par with .44 magnum. .45 Colt +P is almost exactly the same as .44 Magnum, and you can get 360-grain loads that go 1100+ fps. Regular .45 Colt is the same as .45 ACP and will only throw 230 grains at under 1100 fps.
      The problem is that those bullets were clearly made to expand at supersonic velocities like you get from .50 AE and .500 Magnum, so the .500 Special just couldn't make them pop. Bad design on the manufacturer's part, but I doubt there are any .50 bullets made for such low velocities on the market.

    I think the difference on the food service sized cans was primarily due to the fact that the can was strong enough to withstand the hydrostatic shock of the .500 special. If you had used smaller, thinner cans, like soda cans, or 2 liter soda bottles, you'd definitely see a nice big splatter from both rounds. But yea, those cans are designed to be stacked in pallets and shipped stacked in the back of a box truck, they can handle a lot of fucking pressure in both compression and expansion, and the corrugated sides and lids only help to reinforce that further.
    Now, that said, the .500 mag is still a much more powerful cartridge for sure. what is that like 30-40% more powder capacity in the magnum, vs the special?

    If you're using bullets designed for the 500 magnum in the 500 special loading that's probably why you're seeing so little energy transfer. Those bullets are designed to expand at 1,500 fps, not 1,000 fps. Same sort of thing happens with 10mm auto, most loadings use bullets designed for the much more popular .40 s&w, and the extra speed causes much less controlled expansion. Anyway since the .500 special is so uncommon I'm betting that they just used a bullet designed with .500 magnum velocities in mind.

    The 500 special is still running right at standard 44 mag energy levels.
    I just feel like the bullet is pulled straight from the 500 mag line and is designed for 500-1000+ fps higher impact velocities.
    With a bullet actually designed to open up, as it clearly did not do at all going through 4' of water, it would actually be a very viable round. The 44 mag doesn't have any issues anchoring everything it's been used against. I doubt the same energy with .071" wider hole would do any worse.

    This really makes me want to get a snub nose 500 special. Actually, I'm pretty sure you'd have to have one custom made. Not that I couldn't handle a magnum, it would just be pretty dope to have a 500 with a small, light frame and a much shorter cylinder. Plus, you could still get some pretty good hand loads with some expanding projectiles. Maybe that should be something that gets looked into next: optimizing 500 special rounds for performance. If nothing else, it would be interesting to see.

      @@Bacteriophagebs I'm aware, but it wasn't anything about power or even practicality. It's just about having a one-off badass gun that serves no real purpose other than having it. I've had some really nice revolvers including a custom shop S&W 357 and corth. My single biggest factor for buying a gun is utility so everything I have has a very specific purpose. I would just love to have one highly impractical gun for no reason other than having it.
      But if I were looking for a powerful, reliable hand cannon, the Redhawk I'm .454 Casull would definitely be the choice. And don't burn my britches, but I would likely be more inclined to grab a Raging Bull 2.5" snub. I know, I know...Taurus.
      But I've owned several Taurus guns and their customer service and warranty is top notch. In fact, the gun I currently own with the highest round count is actually a Taurus TX-22. I've got around 6,000 rounds on it, more than half suppressed, and it still runs like a champ. Actually, my very first gun (that I still shoot to this day) is a Savage MKII with probably about 10K. But, the other guns are only lower round counts because I have a habit of trading/selling before they go over 3K.
      Weird tangent, sorry. But yeah this is only referring to a gun I'd want for funsies.

      @@DrewishAF I have nothing against Taurus. They're fine guns. Well, the revolvers are. One of these days I'll get a Raging Judge.
      If you want a badass, impractical gun, why not just get an actual .500 mag and lighten the hell out of it? Then shoot light loads in it like it's no big deal, but load the full-power stuff when someone else wants to shoot it.

    Cool difference I learned from demo ranches channel when it was talking about 500 magnum and 50 ae. When it comes to soft targets like watermelons. The slower round makes it further because the round doesn’t deforestation as much on impact. However the faster one obviously dumps more energy into target
    Edit: and I get to see it again proved when he gets to the water jugs. So there’s yalls example of you wanted one

    500 special would be pretty cool if someone made a small frame gun for it maybe even a 5 shot scandium and titanium k frame
