One of the finest English midfielders I’ve ever seen. A player of his phenomenal talent should have got closer to a 100 caps for England.

I used to watch Tony every week at QPR in the early 1980s. Wonderful player. He was in the autumn of his career - but was still the best player in the team.

"a quality goal from a quality player" an immortal line that still resonates. What a player no wonder I don't watch footy anymore nothing like him anywhere since (Everton fan)

How Don Revie saw Alan Hudson above Tony Currie blows my mind there was no contest TC was absolutely miles in front

    • @winsfordtown
      @winsfordtown  ปีที่แล้ว +3

He didn't like flair players. I think Hudson only played twice. I think Trevor Brooking was a Revie type player.

Less than 20 caps for England is unbelievable, probably the best midfield player in the country during the 70's. If he had been born a Brazilian he would have earned three times as many.

As a young kid watching Currie in the mid 70’s, there were 2 things he could do which left a big impression. 1: When he took a throw-in instead of bending down and picking up the ball, he’d stamp on the bill with his studs and the ball would calmly spring up off the floor into his hands. 2: He’d receive the ball near the centre circle and pass the ball towards the corner flag with Woodward running down the wing, the pass looked as though it was over hit but Currie (like a golfer) could put back spin on the ball and as soon as his pass hit the ground it would slow right down and stay in play. Not seen many players since use that skill of back spinning long passes. Also loved his arrogance/ confidence blowing kisses to the fans.

As Stan Bowles says, Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison told their players, Go out and ENTERTAIN the Supporters, because those are the people who pay your wages.

All classic footage but the goal against Wales at 2:10 - what a belter! I think that one was about 1978 and this is the first I've seen it since then. All in all, Tony Currie was a class act and criminally under-capped by England.
And he wasn't the only one - think of the talents of Frank Worthington (8 caps), Stan Bowles (5) and Rodney Marsh (9) - it does make you wonder what the England managers at the time were thinking. Mavericks and great individuals weren't the flavour of the day at Lancaster House, and England were all the poorer for it. That's my take on it, anyway.

Always liked Tony Currie and I'm a Wolves fan! There were some other fantastically skillful, clever players around in the 70s - Best, Bowles, Gray, Marsh, Worthington, MacKenzie....

I used to go to Bramall Lane back in the seventies, Tony Currie was the favourite down at the Lane and very very much admired and loved by the Blades supporters for his flair and attacking skilful style of play. He was a FANTASTIC footballer, with his magical dribbling skills, his accurate pin point long passing and spraying of the ball from midfield, ( often to legend Alan Woodward on the wing ) his goal scoring, and his assisting of goals, not to mention his fun great relationship with the crowd on match days, especially with the Unitedites who absolutely adored him and this side of his play. Will never forget the night at the Lane when United thrashed a great Arsenal side with the brilliant Bob Wilson in goal 5 - 0 with the Blades scoring four goals in first 15 minutes of the game. In the second half in front of a packed Shoreham Street Kop, Currie worked his way into the Arsenal goal area, and then he was loudly encouraged by the Kop to sit on the ball ( Alan Ball did this at Highbury playing for Arsenal against the Blades ) Currie stopped and sat on the match ball momentarily before passing the ball onto another team mate lol. Football players ( entertainers ) like Tony Currie was back then, just don't exist in todays game of 2021. Stadiums would fill with people who came to the match just to watch the great footballing entertainers play on the day. Currie could do magic.
Other great skilful flair entertaining players in the Seventies included - Dennis Law, George Best, Rodney Marsh, Frank Worthington, Alan Hudson, Clyde Best, Stan Bowles, Charlie George, and a whole host of other BRILLIANT players from the Nineteen Seventies.

Hello.... Yes Sheffield United had a cracking team in the early 70s..You've already mentioned Woodward, also Bill Dearden, Ted Hemsley, Trevor Hockey, Eddie Colquhoun, They were a top 5 Division 1 side of the time and I remember them giving my team Derby a few problems

If football had become faceless by the 70s, how would you describe it now?
TC will always be one of my favourite ever players, and I don't support any of the clubs he played for.

Good point. While I was watching this it struck me just how many really skilful, intelligent and artistic players we had back then. Look at Alan Woodward's instant control of the ball from Currie's crossfield pass. We had English, Irish Scots and Welsh lads who could really play back then.

If ever a player should have got 100 caps for England it was TC. The fact that he didn't speaks volumes about what is wrong with England at the International level.

@@kailashpatel1706 My friend played for Sheffield Wednesday and scored 4 goals against Man Utd, a team that included George Best, Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and Nobby Stiles etc. I asked him "Of all the players you ever played with or against, who do you consider the best?" He replied, "TC - without question". He'd also played for LIverpool, alongside Kevin Keegan & Co!

Tony Currie like all of the players back then, NEVER DIVED unlike the cheats of today who lose the ball and hit the deck.

He stood out 'then' in a faceless game !!...look at the shit we have today..greedy mercenary fucking rat players with zero loyalty...go ANYWHERE as long as they get theyre pieces of silver...back in these days..tony currie, stan bowles..rodney marsh stood out...BUT..football was a team game and the fans were vital...now fans arent needed as liverpool said in recent years...fucking SHAME on them !!...the big clubs make so much from tv etc...fans are just there to pad it out..make it seem like they matter....plus we have players being payed a million quid a month or more..fucking DISGUSTING...anyone who pays and goes to football must be stupid...i used to watch everton from the mid 70s as a child up until they last won the title in 87...it went up to over £10....and i never went again...so at least i didnt stop because they went shite...i just couldnt justify the £ 11.50 or whatever it was...now its a fortune to get in...NEVER EVER can the admisdion price be justified...i dont give a fuck if greedy twat players want theyre stacks of cash...football is FINISHED as a working class event...FINISHED...
