Raccoons fighting in the woods...amazing!

- While kayaking today I came across a raccoon on the edge of the Pawcatuck River in Rhode Island. It was rubbing its head and screaming, almost like a barking sound. While watching it another HUGE raccoon appeared on the other side of the river, jumped in and swam over to the injured raccoon. An epic battle began. Sadly this is all I recorded because my memory card was full.....the huge raccoon realized I was there at the end and came towards me. I backed up down the river a little and he went off, back across the river. I could hear him walking around...I assume he was waiting for me to leave to go back and finish the other one off.
For everyone in the comments saying, "Break them up". Fucking how? You're telling me you would approach two dangerous animals in fight mode and try to get them to back off from each other? That's incredibly stupid and dangerous, in the blink of an eye that raccoon could easily turn on you and attack you instead, they're a lot stronger than they look, and there's always the danger of rabies. Not saying either of the raccoons in the video have rabies but that's not always going to be the case. So before you call someone out for not breaking up a fight between two wild animals, fucking use your brain.
Amen to this. Rabies shots are painful and expensive, and the disease has 100% fatality rate when unvaccinated. Risking a potentially infectious bite on account of a bleeding heart complex is not only foolhardy, but stupid.
Thank you! There's a serious lack of common sense in comments, it's amazing how hopeless some people can be. I saw a video of this girl grabbing a rabid racoon with her bare hands, which people were claiming was so "brave" of her. I don't think that's the best way to describe it. But if you try to make it clear why people weren't exactly rushing over to to that, they make ridiculous arguments in response. I just don't have the patience.

Omg last night we herd this and thought it was a puppy so we spent 50 minutes driving around trying to find it then I looked up “ raccoon fighting noise” and it matches up perfectly so we were looking for RACCOONS
That's actually the good thing about those kinds of videos, it can be useful to identify what you're hearing out in the dark at night. Like i heard a fox recently that sounded extremely creepy, i just never heard them make that sound before. Little more comfortable going out to the car knowing that.
Bobcats and other big cats, can make sounds that closely resemble a woman screaming, things you wouldn't expect. And i grew up near a heavily wooded section of town, so walking home at night, roads without houses or streetlights... you hear a mouse in the leaves but you jump to the conclusion it's something way bigger. Coyotes howling not far off though, that definitely sucked. Did some running up until i got my license, i definitely don't miss walking.
Shocking to the unlearned, but nothing to get too upset about IMO. Its just the law of the jungle in full effect. The weaker racoon would've probably contracted disease from its injuries and possibly infected other animals. One way nature goes about purifying itself is by killing and feeding off itself. No different than a lightning storm causing a forest fire...

Okay, so I've grown up in nature. I've been out in the wilderness for most of my life. The bigger raccoon does not 'have rabies'. I've witnessed male on male raccoon aggression many times over. And not just male on male, any raccoon that comes across a meal that the other wants? The other raccoon will try to confront them and steal it. It's hard to say exactly what's going on in this video without more background information, but this isn't anything out of the ordinary.

This must be pretty normal we have two raccoons that have been fighting for the last two days out back. Can't let the dogs out . My first instinct was daylight and rabies but after reading think it might be territorial... I don't want them coming after my chickens have already caught raccoon in the chicken coops and dead chickens noooo fun.

A raccon almost took my dogs eyes out in the yard my dog screamed horrible during the fight.
We just heard this same noise go on and on in our yard and we watched the raccoons run up a tree and carry on which brought me here to see why. Do they fight to death? Because they just suddenly stopped making noise while they were high up in the tree. Then they shimmied down the tree and wandered out into the forest.

Anyone that would attempt to go near these two to try and break them up who is not a professional (a professional I’m sure wouldn’t do it either) deserves anything that happens to them. These animals can be highly volatile as you can see and would charge attack you for just coming near. After injuring you the aggressor would go right back to trying to kill the losing raccoon, even so much as to track him down if he had that serious of a grudge. What in the hell makes any of you people think that these animals are going to stop just because you want to try to break them up same as if two people are fighting.

Just had 2 of them fighting in the street. It was horrible I screamed at them they kept on fighting, finally I threw a rock at them and they both went running. Down the street I ran back into my home scared they would follow me, we have them here like crazy with possum's..
I think the big one could be rabid, not because it's attacking the smaller one, but because the guy recording says he came after HIM when it saw him. A raccoon attacking another raccoon is one thing, but confronting a human unprovoked is something else entirely.

My first instinct was to break it up but that would not have been right. The little one was already very hurt and it is just nature. It is life. And I was in a kayak I really could not do anything. There was more to the video, the big one got pissed because I was watching and probably got too close and started charging at me for a few seconds. I just backed up a little and he went back to the fight.
