6:40 "Drinking contests with humans are unbearable. They drink, they collapse, and we have to drag them back to their homes. The next day they don't even remember losing." - Overheard at the Stonefire Tavern, Ironforge.
I mainly think of Dwarves as craftsmen. They may be good at warfare, brewing and survival in general, but they excel at stone/metalwork. I remember seeing Moria in LoTR and thinking "Yup, they got that perfect". Massive caverns carved by hand and magic. Giant stone-slab doors, filigreed with gold and other precious metals. Forges that never go cold as masterwork weapons and armor are constantly being produced. I always liked the idea of odd character classes for Dwarves too, like Druids and Rogues. Not every Dwarf needs to be a Fighter or Barbarian. I recall some Dragon Magazine issue that talked about Dwarf Rogues called "Mountain Ghosts".
Playing two dwarves clerics in separate campaigns. Cousins , one a mountain dwarf and the other raised as a hill dwarf due to a feud between their fathers. Investigation into the separate lores for the story lines , back story. Thank you for the video, helpful information here.
Until today, I never considered it much; but a dwarf at the forge, pounding away at a lump of steel is most likely praying. Human friend: "Whatcha making?" Dwarf: "I don't know, yet." Epic.
The thought of finding a dwarf with rocklike bread, neatly packaged away, and asking him... "You just going to eat that rock?" -It's not a rock, this is baked bread. "You just smashed it with a hammer. That's a rock, you didn't make it..."
I loved playing Sundered Dwarves, the looks on peoples faces when they had to drag him into the Underdark or a dungeon because he had a Claustrophobic attack
Oh my god this is such a coincidence! I just got done killing a dwarf player character last night! He was a good character...unfortunately he forgot to check for traps in a hallway. And then again in the next room they went into...and then...ran headfirst into combat against a couple trolls...
That was a very useful video for me, thanks! The proud dwarves of Elayria (my homebrewed campaign setting) have been trapped underground for four centuries by orc and goblinoid migration from the plains into the mountains. My players have yet to go to those mountains, so this helps a lot. I'm gonna go rewrite some things, now. Great video, as always, AJ. 👍👍👍
You missed one of the dwarf subraces where all of them tend to lose a lot of their beards other than the Dueregar, the Seacliff Dwarves where the females are less likely to have any at all and the males tend to start sparce and the most facial hair you tend to see with them are some goatees... Of course, they heavily diverge from the normal dwarven culture to the point where they aren't dealing with forges as much, and tend to be lighter than the average dwarf taking to the seas and boat work...and have an alcohol resistance that, well, dwarfs the other subraces because that tends to be the on thing that unifies the sailor and dwarf parts, so they tend to brew things that most races have to make checks from the fumes...because dwarves...
Hey AJ, I dont know what to even say! Epic video & pic's! I will have to re-watch this one a few times just to catch everything you said. @4.38 love that pic, she is smoking a pipe with her foot on a orc with a knot on top of his head. Was the stone like bread that the Dwarves make introduced before or after the works of Sir Terry Pratchett & his idea of Dwarven Battle Bread, a bread so hard it could be used as a semi-improvised weapon? Dwarves potters made the finest vases in the realms. Hold on, hear me out. Dwarves are men of fire and earth. Digging clay, one of the most overlooked materials in the world, then turning it into precious works of art is the domain of a dwarf. Clay is dug out of the ground. Additives are carefully added to get the colors and consistency the dwarf wants for that particular piece. Then the dwarves craftsman adds or subtracts water and shapes it on the spinning wheel. When he has it in the shape he desires, he adds details with specialized tools. He then ages it until it is dry and ready, and places it in a kiln to bake with a fine glaze. Dwarves should be famous for their magnificent pottery, just as much as their steel and their stone. Don't leave Mithral Hall without one of Daren Spadehand's brew mugs, crafted with skill and attention in the brewer's halls, it forever carries the heady, earthy scent of brewing dwarven ale.
The finest pottery in the realms is created by the Pech, a little known but common humanoid race of the Underdark with the ability to shape earth and stone with their bare hands.
@AJ Pickett Neat! They're probably all but unknown on the surface, but I bet they're amazingly popular in the underdark. That said, I still bet dwarves are still well known for their pottery, especially aboveground. Lots of races would make good potters, but few are as obsessive over their craft as dwarves. I would love to see a video on the Pech! That sounds like a fascinating race to visit and explore! It's always amazing how one ability, "Able to mold earth and stone with their hands" can change a race's entire feel.
@marshalmarrs3269 Dwarves have enslaved and engaged in genocide against kobolds and goblins, they also start wars over relatively trivial matters and are not known to be a merciful people.
“Where your Greek with pride.” I would but my toga’s at the cleaners and that place weirds me out. There’s these eerily realistic statues of what look like past customers in the lobby; swear I’ve heard the sounds of hissing and shifting from under the hat of the person normally at the counter; and I think there might be a permanently drunken employee in the back having sexual relations with a goat based off some the sounds I occasionally hear.
I’ve added Nugs from Dragon Age into my games because I love those damn pig-rabbits and all the lore the Dragon Age team decided to put into what is essentially a common rodent.
Just as an observation, I will point out one small difference between D&D dwarves and Tolkien dwarves. As far as I know Tolkien’s version did not farm of grow any food, but rather buying food from Men and some times Elves if they had to. On the other hand it seems like D&D dwarves do farm livestock and crops. From a narrative standpoint does make the able to be more independent and less dependent on outside trade.
Luv this video - my first toon in D&D was dwarf and fell in luv with them. Any video game after that had dwarf i was in. The stout grind it out attitude never give in - hard working idea i admired deeply. Luv anything dwarf
please continue to point out where something is 5th edition specific i know you focus on 5th ed now, but a lot of us still go be the older lore and it can be hard to distinguish sometime
11:37 - "We know them [shield dwarves] in 5e as hill dwarves" Aren't shield dwarves mountain dwarves? (new player here, and I'm making a mountain dwarf). Thanks
Yep. Also worth noting that Gold Dwarves have a lot more melanin than Shield dwarves, and the Jungle dwarves are the most pale of dwarven kind on Toril.
my friend you sir are a godsend as a dyslexic DM i have to sometimes ask people for help reading some of the source material (this message has been dictated) i have no problem with stat blocks but you have given me and im sure a lot of other people i good basis on lore and ecologies that has without a doubt helped me improve as a DM
nothing official of that description exists, the setting creators left the other continents "unknown" so that we could discover and create their details ourselves.
Let it known, as true as their craft, that they are a prideful race but it is not founded on false pride. Nothing stands taller than the might of the Dwarves! With axe or hammer at hand, when the battle rages, let your beards flow!
I am a fan of all things Sir Terry Pratchett wrote for Discworld, his approach to dwarves was hilarious, his treatment of Trolls and the Undead were even better.
When it comes down to dwarven steel, there is not comparisons, none I cal tell you, sure the elves have their enchanted forges and the fire giants have their great magmatic furnaces, but dwarven steel my friends forged by the hands of a master runesmiths on their elemental, primal forges and anvils, is nothing short of miracles made flesh, or in this case metal, Dwarves do not use magic, they have no use for it, but they can channel the raw primal power of the elements and arcane into the metals weaving them during the forging and hammering them in place on their anvils, all done by master runesmith, but the metal at its core is were things get interesting, while not all dwarven metal works have a natural magical infused alloyed, the metals used in their weapons and armor are the result of an amalgamation of volcanic mineral being fused together, this is the reason why dwarven-steel never seem to rust, nor lose its edge, but things get even better when actual enchanted alloyed is used along with their runes, I have seen runic axes cut down a giant, a shield taking a spell blast from soccer or armor that can withstand illusions and temptations of demons,
I foolishly commented on your second video question before I had seen it and for that I apologize. I would like to see dwarven opinions and relationships with other races particularly the Goliaths as I had a Goliath PC that was raised by Dwarves.

Will the traffic jam ever end? Will their stake out yield useful information? Will someone explain just what the fuck is going on with Piercer’s teeth? Find out next time on...” _Theme Music Starts_ “Piercer & Roper!!!!” _Credits Roll_
Do you know how the Thunder Blessing effects dwarven twins? Are dwarven twins inseparable, fiercely competitive, do they have any psychic or spiritual connection to their twin, etc. ?
The 3E campaign setting for Forgotten Realms details that Thunder Twins know the general direction and distance of each other. So definitely some kind of deeper connection.
I like how you went into more detail as to why dwarves dislike elves and the fact that elves are one of the most destructive races. Yet they behave as if they are infallible.
I think that is an unfair statement: the most populace race of elves in Faerun exists almost just to point out how fucked up their old empire was and doesn't want anything like it back. Wood Elves are fine, Sun Elves are dicks.

@marshalmarrs3269 Dwarves have enslaved and engaged in genocide against kobolds and goblins, they also start wars over relatively trivial matters and are not known to be a merciful people.
I always think it’s funny that although Dwarves are a short race, all of the architecture on their underground kingdoms is always shown to be massive.
Just because they aren't tall doesn't mean they don't desire to make grand things.
"size matters not"
Lol
Augh, so many stunties ta kill. This Dwarf video is great thus far.
Aj Picketti lok dal dawongrar ar (in khazalid : (The) Aj Pickett is an old and eternal most excellent friend of the dwarven race ;).
Dwarven priests bless alcohol? By the holy spirit!
dwarfs be catholic???
I always loved this. Almost always, our party had a Dwarven priest.
Love the video
I’ve added Nugs from Dragon Age into my games because I love those damn pig-rabbits and all the lore the Dragon Age team decided to put into what is essentially a common rodent.
Thank you so much for this vid!!! I love dwarves!! Can't wait for the next one!!!
I am legit excited to see going back and elaborating more on some classic D&D characters AJ
So is dwarven ale made from fungus?
7:15 they also keep rhinos as cavalry chargers, and some raise Rust Monsters and wear stone plate
They use grains to make ales for the most part, but dwarven brewery science is extremely resourceful.
@@AJPickett I bet Ironcrag Stout is brewed from cave mushrooms. Mostly because I just now made it up.
@@kingmasterlord hahaha
Love this race! Looking forward to the next installment
please continue to point out where something is 5th edition specific
i know you focus on 5th ed now, but a lot of us still go be the older lore
and it can be hard to distinguish sometime
I'll try, I think I generally attempt to stay current with the edition, but attempt where possible to keep historic lore active and integrated.
15:00 Forgot Dwarven women (in most Canon) grow facial hair. . . Unfortunate
Fascinating video, can't wait for pt 2.
DWARF GANG
ARN FHALGHREN! 🍻
No holy water but Holy Mead, water is just an ingredient, all drinks need some alcohol, Right ? Can I apply as a dwarf, I am 169cm?
11:37 - "We know them [shield dwarves] in 5e as hill dwarves" Aren't shield dwarves mountain dwarves? (new player here, and I'm making a mountain dwarf). Thanks
Yes, Mountain Dwarves = Shield Dwarves and Hill Dwarves = Gold Dwarves
Yeah, Mountain Dwarves are Shield Dwarves and Hill Dwarves are Gold Dwarves
Yep. Also worth noting that Gold Dwarves have a lot more melanin than Shield dwarves, and the Jungle dwarves are the most pale of dwarven kind on Toril.
Dwarves, the best fantasy race!
The part about dwarvish history is very interesting. Especialy about their involment (or lack their of) in the crown wars.
Amazing like usual. Thanks for your hard work!
Dwarves are some of my favorite dnd races, they may not seem like much, but when you look into them, they are awsome.
This was Incredibly good, thank you AJ appreciate it!
my friend you sir are a godsend as a dyslexic DM i have to sometimes ask people for help reading some of the source material (this message has been dictated) i have no problem with stat blocks but you have given me and im sure a lot of other people i good basis on lore and ecologies that has without a doubt helped me improve as a DM
Happy to help!
Man, it must have been a difficult time searching the internet for the art used in this video.
Remember Koom Valley
I'm looking for a map of Toril that shows equal detail to the rest of the world that Faerun has, any ideas?
nothing official of that description exists, the setting creators left the other continents "unknown" so that we could discover and create their details ourselves.
good video AJ looking forward to part 2
where did you find the map at 1:03
ive been scouring for one that clearly laid out for years
google image search. I suggest take a screen shot, crop the image, feed it into google image search and it will match it with the original source.
@@AJPickett on it thank you
Let it known, as true as their craft, that they are a prideful race but it is not founded on false pride.
Nothing stands taller than the might of the Dwarves!
With axe or hammer at hand, when the battle rages, let your beards flow!
What are your thoughts on Pratchett dwarfs?
I am a fan of all things Sir Terry Pratchett wrote for Discworld, his approach to dwarves was hilarious, his treatment of Trolls and the Undead were even better.
When it comes down to dwarven steel, there is not comparisons, none I cal tell you, sure the elves have their enchanted forges and the fire giants have their great magmatic furnaces, but dwarven steel my friends forged by the hands of a master runesmiths on their elemental, primal forges and anvils, is nothing short of miracles made flesh, or in this case metal,
Dwarves do not use magic, they have no use for it, but they can channel the raw primal power of the elements and arcane into the metals weaving them during the forging and hammering them in place on their anvils, all done by master runesmith, but the metal at its core is were things get interesting, while not all dwarven metal works have a natural magical infused alloyed, the metals used in their weapons and armor are the result of an amalgamation of volcanic mineral being fused together, this is the reason why dwarven-steel never seem to rust, nor lose its edge, but things get even better when actual enchanted alloyed is used along with their runes, I have seen runic axes cut down a giant, a shield taking a spell blast from soccer or armor that can withstand illusions and temptations of demons,
My favorite
@11:27
That belt, LOL!
Greetings from Draugin son of Jahli of clan Mountain Twig by Moradins beard may you prosper
Great demonstration on the use of a shield!
@@FlyingAxblade_D20 I tried this with some friends of mine, it is harder than you think
I foolishly commented on your second video question before I had seen it and for that I apologize.
I would like to see dwarven opinions and relationships with other races particularly the Goliaths as I had a Goliath PC that was raised by Dwarves.
My favorite race! Thank you sir!
PIERCER & ROPER
(Continued from Scarecrow Video)
_Theme Music Starts_
_Piercer & Roper logo pops on screen_
Announcer: “Last time on Piercer & Roper!” _Flashback montage starts_ “Our boy’s in blue listened as the Derro Dust Dealer divulged the location and identity of his supplier, a Svirfneblin Alchemist, named Snipdik, who runs an apothecary in Downtown Menzo. With this information, our duo was ready to set off across town so Piercer called called in a squad car to pick up their perp...” _Screen goes black_
_Scene starts with a large and imposing but young looking Bugbear in an MZPD uniform holding a familiar handcuffed Derro 5 feet of the ground as he walks to his squad car and gingerly throws him in the back seat them slams the door before turning around._
Officer Khurguuhul: “Hope you two didn’t rough up the little guy too bad.” _Grins knowingly at Roper_
Roper: “YOU KNOW HOW IT GOES!!! NO ONE EVER WANTS TO TALK UNTIL YOU SCARE 50 SHADES OF SHIT OUTA THEM!!! ANYWAYS, I OWE YOU A ROUND AT LIISHUH’S FOR THE PICK UP!!!”
Officer Khurguuhul: “You owe me a couple Roper. If my uncle knew that you were out here shaking down Derro without running your operation by him first...well let’s just say I’m gunna need more than a drink if he finds out that I’m covering for you again. Good luck guys. Go get that son of a bitch.”
Roper: “SARGE IS ALL BARK, DON’T WORRY. HE WON’T BE MAD AT ANYONE ONCE WE BRING DOWN THIS DUST RING.”
_The two shake hands and Khurguuhul gets in his car and leaves. Piercer & Roper make their way to where they have their car stashed and get in._
Roper: “OK PIERCER!!! A QUICK RIDE ACROSS TOWN THEN WE CAN SCOPE OUT THE PLACE!!!”
_The engine roars as Roper floors the petal, sending dust and debris flying as the tires smoke and the car takes off at high speed._
_The screen goes black and big white letters pop on spelling “TWO HOURS LATER”. The scene fades back in to a shot of Piercer & Roper setting in the car, then slowly pans back to reveal that the car is in the middle lane of a 5 land freeway that is currently bumper to bumper packed with cars._
Roper: “I HATE TRAFFIC JAMS!!!!!!!”
Piercer: “ _Stares blankly at Roper_ “
Roper: “YOU’RE RIGHT PIERCER!!! AT LEAST THIS GIVES US TIME TO FIGURE OUT HOW WERE GUNNA DO THIS!!! I’M THINK.....A STAKE OUT!!!!”
Piercer: “ _Stares blankly at Roper, then smiles, revealing a maw of serrated, razor edged teeth._ “
Roper: _Jumps out of shock from the sight of Piercer’s teeth_ “DAMNIT PIERCER!!!! THAT IS NOT WHAT I MEANT WHEN I SAID YOU SHOULD GET VENEERS!!!”
_Screen goes black_
Announcer: “Now trapped in a traffic jam, Piercer & Roper have plenty of time to plan their stake out of Snipdik’s Apothecary. Will the traffic jam ever end? Will their stake out yield useful information? Will someone explain just what the fuck is going on with Piercer’s teeth? Find out next time on...” _Theme Music Starts_ “Piercer & Roper!!!!”
_Credits Roll_
Love it, the traffic jam is herds of Rothe, carts pulled by giant lizards, some people riding flail snails and loads of depressed looking slaves.
AJ Pickett Don’t forget about the occasional Drow noble on a palanquin being carried by human slaves from the surface.
... My Actual name is Charon... I wear my Greek and my Geek with pride
Do not expect to see my face on thumbnails, I personally loathe the practice. (ok, loathe is a strong word... I do not subscribe to it)
Enjoyed this!
If dwarves eat rocks, do they shit bricks?? Is that what they make their holds from?!?!
No Ryan
Yes Ryan.
Let's experiment
I hope so
Do you know how the Thunder Blessing effects dwarven twins? Are dwarven twins inseparable, fiercely competitive, do they have any psychic or spiritual connection to their twin, etc. ?
They behave as normal twins do,
The 3E campaign setting for Forgotten Realms details that Thunder Twins know the general direction and distance of each other. So definitely some kind of deeper connection.
Wouldn't this be more aptly titled Forgotten Realms Lore: Dwarves?
Which setting has the most in depth lore on Dwarves in D&D?
@@AJPickett A fair point.
That said, Greyhawk, Dragonlance, Eberron, Mystara and Dark Sun all have different takes on the Dwarves as well.
