  • Infused with elemental power, the Genasi is part mortal and part primordial, usually the result of Genies who long ago interbred with Humans of the Prime Material worlds, they are a diverse and interesting group with excellent potential as player characters.

      Can they produce a lightsaber? I could see it since the positive energy plane overloads you with power/energy, them being able to produce a beam of energy that might heal injured people it hits, and deals positive damage to those that have full health. Though in my mind when i think of a positive energy Genasi the image of a mad scientist that has his/her hair standing up an arcs of energy coursing around them.

  • @neogod29
    @neogod29 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I think where D& D dropped the ball, they could've given Earth Genasi Tremor Sense and Air Genasi Blind Sight up to 30' or 60'. This could be because of their connection with the elements. Earth genasi can feel the movement of any creature on the ground near them and the Air genasi can feel the vibrations in the air. Fire Genasi can see the heat rising off of objects with their dark vision, and water can see clearly in any body of water (total obscurity equals light obscurity, and light obsurity equals clear vision).

    I love elementals in fantasy, no different in D&D. Having the option to play as an elementally infused humanoid is just fucking cool. You can keep your half dragons, demons and angels.
    I especially love the Air Genasi, fits right into that Arabian Knight theme. If I get into a game I would love to play as a Prince of Persia type, probably reflavour the Monk to be less of a Shoalin monastary trained Kung Fu master and more of a Desert Bandit parkourist with a scimitar. Kensei would work, that way I could reflavour the Longsword as a long ass Scimitar.
    Backstory would probably involve a merchant finding a lamp, and making a pact with a female Genie/Djinn. He gets to be rich and successful, she gets a son (the character) and freedom on the prime plane. He could then be raised in the deserts, helping those lost in sandstorms.

    When (if) I get back into gaming, the Genasi will replace a LOT of the stuff I created decades to be more in the spirit of the current game. I first got into it in the 90s when a player had a story about having a Marid father who had a fetish for "dry-landers" who fell in love with his mother. I spend a whole summer creating the elementally infused, including how Shapechange is needed during situations to not kill the mate and-or spawn. I can throw out my cumbersome point-based system of over-thinking. I'm keeping my version of "Teifling" because I like it better than Planescape's version of lower-planar touched beings. Great video AJ. You are my best link to modern AD&D.

    "They can exhale constantly." This sentence made me so happy. Love when people know that exhalation is the key part of breathing, and inhalation is just the mechanical setup. It's not the taking in of oxygen that's needed, but the removal of Carbon via Carbon dioxide. X3. And I never doubted you, of all people, would know that. X3. But it's still a little nice joy of mine. XP

    Whenever I go with a genasi it's typically a para-genasi, often of the smoke variety. If it's not in Sigil, I'll still find a way for it to make sense (for example drunken wanderings and shenanigans involving a portal key). My personal favorite out of these was Enen-Rah the Mystic, who's had this happen enough times that the Lady of Pain decided Enen-Rah would be the de facto diplomat of Sigil due to his neutral alignment.

She's a former mercenary turned freelancer due to being blamed for the deaths of the group's officers. This event split her soul in two, one being the happy go lucky Feyanah, who while raging is a simple death machine requiring orders to stop fighting, and the other being Ikari, the calculating and mistrustful half, cracking one-liners when raging. I always liked having the Genasi being less inclusive in my setting, and actually being more nomadic, and quite like the Gypsies of Europe.that travel in bands along both their own routes an trade routes between the many cities of the world. Each Genasi type serving a different role in the Gypsy band from entertainers an guards to those less trustworthy members of the community. They band together not from a fact of prejudice they felt from other races, but from a kinship they feel from each other as they wander the world on their wanderlust to experience all the world has elementally to give, before settling down in an area that calls to them an having children.

      Though I will admit i would have fun running a adventure/campaign in which a group of players arriving in a town/city/village that a Genasi gypsy band had set up temporary base outside the town/city/village limits, which might even put up a carnival type establishment. Imagine seeing fire Genasi that breathed fire or juggled it even might mold flames into different flaming images, the Water Genasi dancing an doing gymnastics, the wind Genasi doing acrobatics on the high wire, while the earth Genasi might just be something like Bouncers an strong men of the band. The the para-Genasi might be more like the carny types that run games, maybe acting like fortune tellers, some even being those that ran things behind the scenes. Yet it would also be fun if the party noticed strange iconography in the carnival, and the party maybe hearing about people going missing after the band had left afew night later. An after they chase after the Genasi band thru several more towns finding them outside larger town setting up camp and proceeding to explore the camp find evidence that some fo the Genasi in the band are aligned with the princes/princesses of elemental chaos could be a fun little adventure.

    Made a slyph warlock for my friends campaign. It's essentially an air genasi only She has a fairy parent instead of human. So she's just big enough to be small instead of tiny like the other fairys she grew up around in the fey wilds, and she doesn't have wings she moves through the air at will. Unfortunately my dm doesn't want anyone to have natural flight so I had to cripple her by giving her a fear of heights. She has to make a wis. Save when she flys over 10ft in the air that increases in difficulty every 5ft.

    I have an idea for a genasi character for a future game. Basically, the idea I have in mind is a person who is born as a fire Genasi (due to an ancestor being exposed to elemental energy). The thing is, she is nothing like how fire Genasi are typically described, instead being kind and noncombative. After accidentally set her home on fire (she had no idea who or even what she was) and being orphaned, she goes into hiding and becomes a monk in order to better control her abilities to aid others.

    Building a home brew campaign that takes place after Storm Kings Thunder. I set this new continent called Ostoria (yes, the ostoria). Annam’s wife Othea had an affair with Utuliu, the elemental deity. In known lore, this is where cyclops, firbolgs, and other strange giant kin are from. Instead I changed it so there are 4 new giants, where the paraelemental planes are. I had to make 4 new genies, which means 4 new Genasi races, and 4 new elemental. These would be Ice, Smoke, Ooze, and Magma. The giant form is mist instead of ice, as they already have a frost giant. I’ll upload to DMs Guild eventually

    Hey AJ, I've been watching your videos for a while now and I really appreciate the content you push out, but I wanted to let you know (if for some reason you haven't already noticed) that your "ess"s tend to be a bit harsh in the audio. the source of this could be many things, but I just wanted to let you know that they're pretty harsh in this video. I don't know what you are using for audio mixing, but there are lots of ways to reduce that, as most video editors (like premiere) come with default effects that can lower the harshness of the "ess" sounds (I believe premiere's is called DeEsser).
    anyway, I love the content as usual, and thanks for all your work!

    Out of curiosity, how would you rule a Jann origin Genasi? The all-elemental plane genies that are most comfortable in the Prime Material Plane.
    I had my homebrew rules. I also had a player character version of Janns (in the campaigns I allowed Pixies). I had them as naturally comely, charming, and burly (bonus to STR, CON, and CHA) but less agile to innate body bulk and more negatively impulsive and headstrong by being a mortal hybrid (negatives to DEX and WIS). The mortal race modifies that on top of those. No matter the mortal parent race (which they were a modified version of), they can take any class but also have that race's limits and gifts psionically speaking. Upon creation, they were always the maximum height for their race and gender and favored the heavier (muscle mass) side. I also granted the player to customize elemental attunement, bonus to resistances and gifts to certain elements if they took weaknesses and vulnerabilities to others relative to the bonuses. In case you noticed (by now), I had a library of options in my campaigns. Newcomers could just pick one of my premade characters. I had hundreds (I spat out one or two a week when bored) that were really iconically basic. Interested players could just take their character from another campaign world and I would convert it to mine as close as possible. Veteran players would use my way-too-complex (always a work in progress) system to create their own vision.
    So... Mighty Gluestick... the best DM I know to date (a guy inspiring me to DM again)... how would you do a Jann Genasi? You apparently never fell into the congestive over-thinking that I did. Please, give me (us) your insights as a guy who is 3 editions (I'm a home-brew 2nd Ed guy) beyond me. No, I am not being sarcastic. I love your videos and insights.

      Depends on if it was a male Drow/Genasi, or or a Female Drow/Genasi. If it were male Genasi meeting a female Drow well the female might look down on it as inferior to her, but worth a look for what could be gained for the spider goddess, while if it were a female Genasi they still might feel superior to the female Genasi yet value them over most of the male an female Drows for the potential in their blood.

    • @spikegilfer1997
      @spikegilfer1997 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I expect that Drow Genasi would lean towards the Earthly plane given where they are located. In that case the Drow might value them for bringing in a more durable frame provided they still have a proper amount of dexterity.
      Edit: Though that added patience is sure out of place in the most places of the Underdark. Not that Drow can't be patient, but it's not usually something they are comfortable with when unbound hedonism and murder are stone's throw away.
      Who was that Retiarius Drow Weapon master? Uthegentel Del'Armgo? He was extraordinarily large for a Drow at over six feet, but seemed to be treated with proper respect despite rumors that he wasn't of pure Drow blood. (And considering how Xenophobic the Drow are that's saying something. Though I suppose an based Drow Genasi could maintain the ebony skin and really only have the frame telling them apart.)
      He was also used as breeding stock if I remember correctly, so you might want to keep Drow Genasi away from _that_ player.
      Fire Genasi? Might be less mercurial than the average Drow to be honest. Unless the tempers are added together, then they would be a hefty level in Chaotic-Stupid. Might have issues in stealth, which would be frowned upon.
      Air wouldn't be too much of a change. More of a dick in keeping with Drow society.
      Water would bring some much needed calm.
      But they probably all end up being fed to a spider, let's be honest.

    As much as I love the different flavor of lore for each type. Wouldn't the Fire Genasi seeing heat as shades of red give them essentially truesight? In the military I got to use infrared and night vision often and I always preferred the former so I'd imagine it'd be a similar comparison with heat vision compared to any variant of dark vision.

    • @TheSchnieder6
      @TheSchnieder6 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From the video, 11:15 , it sounds like that's only for their Dark Vision. So when their eyes adjust to low light they can see heat in shades of red. It all comes down to DM's discretion. Maybe anything above 0 gives off red, or only things hotter than a small mammal, absorbed sunlight, torches, etc., just some arbitrary threshold. Then you'd also have to deal with undead, ice/water/stone creatures, cold blooded, and even conjured heat or fire used to purposely obscure the genasi's vision. And I believe truesight let's you see through magics and darkness. Truesight is better than a fire genasi's darkvision, and their darkvision isn't necessarily better than other darkvision. As it could be a detriment if, as soon as the lights are out, they start seeing red with no choice or control over it.

    • @Im-Not-a-Dog
      @Im-Not-a-Dog 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Dylla classically infravision doesn’t allow you to see undead as they are ambient temperature. So dark vision might be better in that case.

    • @matthewdylla6090
      @matthewdylla6090 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Im-Not-a-Dog but that's not true? Density, liquid content, atmospheric pressures all play a role in heat and thermal dissipation. So if you have a body(dead or alive) next to a rock and next to a plant they all have varying heat readings whereas with NVGs you only get a basic light reflection which can be extremely difficult to interpret in unknown settings. I'll admit however that a lot of this comes down to the quality of the optic but I would still say thermal vision would be better as the night vision I was able to use was newer than the thermal and yet the thermal allowed me to see contours, liquids, some tracking ability and defeats basic camo. Whereas the NVG was newer and still was much too grainy to be of much use without constant focus being needed. Writing that out you are back to the limits of "normal" vision at the best of times whereas thermal takes much more specific actions to fool.

    • @Im-Not-a-Dog
      @Im-Not-a-Dog 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Dylla I don’t disagree with the science. I’m just saying how I’ve heard it explained by dm’s. They aren’t always the most scientifically accurate of folks. Not that they have to be, considering the game is based in fantasy. But remember the all important rule when it comes to D&D; Your game, your rules. So if you’re DM’ing, you can basically use whatever logic you think is best, provided your players don’t completely disagree. And if your a player, explain why you disagree in the same manner as you did here and any decent DM will either agree and change how it works, or use in game logic to make it work, like magic(a great way around physics issues).

    • @Im-Not-a-Dog
      @Im-Not-a-Dog 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Dylla One good example as how undead avoid detection with heat vision had to do with the fact that undead are linked to the negative energy plane. Something along the lines of them not absorbing or radiating and actual thermal energy do to it not being a negative form of energy, and thus appearing invisible to heat vision. Probably wouldn’t work in real life, but with the way reality works in game it makes perfect sense.
