At the end of the Horus Heresy, a lot of the Chaos legions become roving warbands and cults because it was no longer loyalty and brotherhood keeping them together, it was instead service to the chaos gods and gaining power and favor through them. Some Chaos Legions managed to keep the rigid command structure that bound them together but most did not. The Black Legion was more or less founded with keeping that sense of brotherhood, loyalty, and structure even in service of Chaos to become an effective fighting force again.
That's basically the story of the Decepticons in Transformers Animated and Transformers Prime: Starscream almost manages to kill Megatron and take his placd, but then he recovers and either kills Starscream outright or tortures him for a while.
As far as commander-type figures go, Araghast is pretty respectable, honestly. You can tell that he genuinely loves to battle, as even if he's got the insurance of the portal, there's really no reason for him to continuously use himself as bait. Pretty sure he's doing it out of the sheer Khornate urge to get down and dirty, while still keeping an overall strategic objective in mind. Plus, he's evidently very powerful on his own, to be able to put up the kind of fight that he does. He definitely earned his lordship, even if arrogance in his overestimation of his control over his subordinates ultimately costs him his life. As is thematic for chaos, really.
They should have let Araghast escape after Eliphas had betrayed him. Imagine Araghast coming back to the Black Legion's camp fuming with rage to get his hands on Eliphas.

It would make an awesome side objective, to let Aragast live, in order to create civil war in black legion, weakening them. Making the last mission easier. Doing that should also give some corruption

I recently replayed the original dawn of war recently, and I just realized how closely the fight resembles the fight with Bale. I mean really, Our favorite bloodthirsty chaos lord of the game gets betrayed by his soft voiced sorcerer assistant.
That's actually quite normal. When a Chaos Lord shows weakness, if he falters rather than die for his gods, his ambitious second would turn on him and take over as the leader.
Probably the happiest time when RELIC announce Chaos Rising for the Dawn of War 2. I always love when Righteous Marine versus against Traitor Marine. Not to mention you get to test two side of the Space Marine in the Skirmish mode.

To be surprised at about Eliphas leaving you Araghast, it is common practice amongst Chaos to leave your superior to die, and your own god loathes those who run from battle.
It's taken me so long to realise why Avitus is so up in arms about coming on this mission specifically, because if he acts all zealous about killing the big bad of the Black Legion within the Sector, it removes some suspicion about him being the traitor (canonically anyway)
Avitus’s disgust at the Black Legion seems as genuine as any other so him betraying the chapter and giving out orders feels so out of character. Had he just been a traitor without leading anyone it would have been better.

Araghast was definitely one of the easier bosses because unlike most bosses (Including original Dawn of war 2 campaign) he could be pinned and knocked flying all over the place by heavy weapons. Up until he used the red power he could barely scratch my commander. Normally I'd have to get my commander to do a tactful withdrawal to recover health but in this case I barely had to do anything; just keep hitting him.
- I'm more of an Ultramarine Captain, but you know. :p I find the best Dawn of War to be the first one, despite its many flawed expansions. First because of the wider selection of units, secondly because of the wider selection of factions, and lastly and almost most important, because of the possibility to play with mods. Codex in particular makes it worth the while. I have, however, nothing but respect for DoW II even though it's just not the same thing.
If i have to be honest Eliphas aint the type of guy who should lead the black legion because he fears when abaddon speaks to him on the judgement of carrion(dw2 retribution) and araghast survived dawn of war 2 retribution would probably be interesting

I hate how Araghast has no knock back resistance... Makes it very anticlimactic.
Stun locking him is pretty vital on higher difficulties. Otherwise he turns your assault termies into paste if he's allowed to swing.
