The tiles were manufactured by Douzies-Maubeuge ceramiques, in the north of France. Their logo is four lions and an eagle, looks like they may be worth quite a lot!

Dan, there is a vlog called, "Magical Modernist Mansion." The couple are friends of Stephanie's, named Camilla and Ollie. I'm sure you have met them. Anyhow, they went to a historical tile person, in relation to their house. This person knew everything, historically, about tile. You might want to contact them, to talk to this woman, about your tile. She was amazing. She even knew who could possibly make copies of the tile you have, or who could reconstruct it. She was fantastic, to say the least. She might even have the same tiles you need. It was great seeing Kat working with you. She is so energetic and enthusiastic, in whatever she does! I hope this helps, and gives you an option to find out about your tile. It's beautiful.

With the old technique of using concrete (sand and cement) it's really a matter of luck. If it was properly done it's nearly impossible to separate the tiles from the thick layer of concrete (20-30 mm usually). I don't know what the main factors were but I'd assume the sand - cement ratio, the amount of water in the mix, whether the tiles were wet or dry and site factors like air temperature and humidity.

The Encaustic tiles that you are lifting our prone to cracking and chipping if left exposed to moisture/water for to long as well as frosts.
An extra tip for lifting stubbing ones is to use a hacksaw blade on its own to cut underneath it, it’s very slow and tedious though!
A thin wallpaper stripping blade can also help……
Just as a thought, one of those vibrating saw blade things could possibly help!
These tiles can reach high prices £50-£100 for single tiles sometimes, so maybe they should be placed under lock and key for the time being…..
There are still a number of companies that make them and can easily reproduce them, but again you could be looking at prices of £25+ per tile….

There is a place in spain that was on the Magical Mondernest Mansion that was talking about the preservation and the remaking of their tiles. I may have a short memory but I think some of them kind of looked like you tiles. Perhaps Olie would give you more information

Welcome back Cat! So nice to see you helping out Dan in his new endeavour. Love that the community is expanding to a few different properties. I took down lath and paster walls today to expose the stone in a kitchen in my 1841 building. However, better then going backwards with those beautiful tiles. Going back wards before you go full steam ahead is what I loth the most. lol I hope both of you have a day off tomorrow. Heather from Canada

Yes! Save the broken tiles. They can be pieced together in inconspicuous places if you need to stretch what you have. Learned that the hard way.....

Can you build some simple wooden storage crates and store the tiles in the basement? Install temporary doors down there with locks. If you keep them stacked where they are currently at, they are at risk of being smashed by something falling from up above.

Teamwork makes the dream work! Those tiles are so beautiful and it is going to be amazing to see them back in place properly when the room is completed one day! Really great to see Kat there with you chipping away. She is a gal who knows how to get things done and not afraid of hard work. Hope she can stay a while as we miss her big bunches!

Try a pencil rubbing of the back of the tile to recover the makers name. So lovely to see Kat, ❤ she brings joy and laughter to every job. Hope your backs are okay after that!

    Hi Dan
Take a tile and press the back into flattened smooth playdough and you will be able to read the indented name. Failing that you could use flour mixed with water. All the best! Let us know who made the tiles😊

Oh I LOVE seeing Kat (or is it Cat?) at Lalande, so great she came and helped you with this! You're right, this removal is an investment in thr original building, those tiles were alot more protected under heaps of soil. The day you get to start putting these back in, having ordered copies of the missing ones, you'll have completed a milestone of a megaproject restoring this building and it will be a real moment of joy for you to see it back on again!
    ❤❤❤

Lol might dilemma as well I go with Kat because my oldest is Katherine my take is considering how kind, patient and loving she is she wouldn't be too bothered by either spellings. May you be blessed with love, joy and prosperity.

Dan, put a pallet in the van and store tiles safely at your farmhouse/Stephanie Chateau will be tragic to lose them to thieves. Lovely helper. Happy Sunday.

I’m so relieved to see those tiles come out so easily!
I second saving those bits! Future crafty merch there.
And was wondering if when rebuilding the walls to the room with insulation and such the walls would be thicker those making the floor slightly smaller thus making up for the tile loss?
