Thankyou! what talented people these women were!Sarah Biffin’s achievements are extraordinary, they are now,in this modern age,but even more so at the time she was producing work like these lovely feathers!
Loved it! I could listen to you reading a cook book, Philip! Of course I've studied art my entire life, which is rather long, 76 years, and I've never heard a peep about any of these women artists until now. Thank you so much for bringing English women's art history to life. Don't forget American! :)
Wonderful ! Thank you for this Philip each of these women artists are outstanding in their own ways and yet aside from Dame Laura Knight - hardly as well known as most of their contemporary male artists. Clearly, only a great deal more exposure can begin to highlight the still existing disparities in recognition, appreciation and 'value' between male and female artists.
Let's stir the pot. A. Very few comments on this post. B. Had this video been posted and the artists presented as anonymous, would anyone be able to tell whether the artists were male or female? I say no. So why then, in the world of art, are womens' work valued so much lower overall than mens' work? It's not disputable that womens' work is valued lower. The top 21 most expensive paintings ever sold are all male artists. Most of the paintings on the list exploit and objectify women. I want to be clear, I'm not for this wave of wokism, DEI, and affirmative action. I'm all for the merit system. The merit for women is already there but it's not being paid for. The woke movement wasn't entirely wrong about everything. Humanity devalues women and for all the wrong reasons. The playing field in the world of art is level between the sexes. And look at Beffin, no hands or legs and she still knocks it out of the park. How much does her work go for? Mr. Mould has presented masterpieces by female artists in his Art in Isolation series, yet, these women are hardly acknowledged. Forget the artist's genitals and write the check if the work warrants it. I want to start seeing realistic numbers at the auction houses. Either that or someone explain to me why a stroke of paint from Renoir is worth more than a stroke of paint from Jan Buchannan.
Does the British Museum have any work by Sarah Biffin? A comparative exhibition of her work and the other work featuring nature in the existing collection would be interesting.
There aren't works by Sarah Biffin in the British Museum but you can find her in collections such as the National Portrait Gallery, Somerset Heritage Centre, and the Wellcome Collection, as well as abroad, at the The Baltimore Museum of Art, US.

My favourite female artists….Amy Sillman, Fiona Rae, Tracy Emin and Barbara Hepworth
