It's very rare that a cover version is better than the original but the Communards did it in style.!
Because of that key change at the ending chorus. That is why a lot of 80s songs sound more emotional.
I think they are both good and it is not better than the original just different
Most covers of Bob Dylan are better.
The drummer is June Miles-Kingston. June and Kate Korris (Mo-dettes guitarist and former member of the Slits) lived in a squat with Joe Strummer from the Clash. She bought her first dum kit from Sex Pistols dummer Paul Cook.
June also worked with director Julien Temple on the Sex Pistols movie The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. Her brother Bob Kingston was in the early punk band Tenpole Tudor. Tenpole Tudor was featured in the movie and had three song in its soundtrack.
As a side note: June was also the dummer and backing vocalist for Fun Boy Three and features heavily in their version of "Our Lips Are Sealed"
The Reverend Richard Coles on piano , extremely talented musician, he's recently retired from being a vicar , he's on TV pretty often on panel shows , very funny man 😊
Communards are a blast from my past. Love this cover of Thelma Houston's song. Fantastic. This guy was in Bronski Beat with a song called Small Town Boy. He really was a talented singer.
Communards are some of the staples of the 80s, the unique voice of Jimmy Somerville from the Bronski Beat fame. To this day, Jimmy still has that amazing singing ability, their songs were a big part of the club scene years ago, and I remember dancing to them in all the NYC clubs ... shout out to those who were regulars at Splash ... miss you gogo boys!
Thank you for knowing some basic context. And I'm not part of the gay community but the pathos and reality of the situation here and flipping the double bird
These two were ridiculously super surface on this song. Sucktastic
Well, not quite to this day. It's a great shame but Somerville was such a nasty arrogant shit when he was famous that he is now just another guy in the city where I live. He really was not a pleasant person when the hits were coming.
@@duncanmccann2715 have to say I agree. Met him and Richard a few times. Not a nice guy.
love your reaction..was a great tune back in the late 80s in the UK absolute banger in the nightclub got everyone up on the floor when it came on....80s the best of times
great reaction guys to a true classic 80s anthem jimmy somerville is one of the best singers of our time
Richard Coles, at the piano, is now a Church of England vicar, and a lot of fun. :) Yes, and gay, of course, as is Jimmy. One of the best k nown "out" groups in eighties and very popular in the clubs at that time. To avoid backlash there are just hints in the video.
Watchinig you love music that isn't you're usual style makes me feel good because it means you're true music lovers in your souls.
1st time seeing you & I enjoyed this so much. For one thing, you listened to the long version which is what burned up the clubs when this song came out - I haven't heard that piano run in years & when it played I thought "Uh oh...they're doin' the club mix!!!" And your reactions...y'kno how you know you'd be friends with people based on how they connect with certain things you already love? That was this & you guys for me. If I played this for a friend who'd never heard it, your reactions are exactly what I would hope for - you went on the ride with this track and GOT it! And I had a blast as if I had been the one introducing you to it LOLOL! Really nice job on this, I had fun watching you 🎶💙
Yes you cool guys the 80s is my favorite decade , the English new wave bands ruled the world , greetings from Benjamin from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
Altid de beste nils Johannesburg
I am 49 years old and today I’ve realised that the lady singing is Sarah, I always thought it was Alison Moyet
I grew up in the 80's. I went from 8 to 17. That's kinda the age range where you start to go deeper than the current charts, and you start to develop your tastes in music, fashion etc. For the most part, I went down the guitar road, but there's some bands, and tunes that are just so infectiously good that you can't NOT love them. I LOVED this tune as soon as I heard it in 1986. I've listened to it 1,000's of times over the decades since. It NEVER gets old.
I could suggest a few similar, happy, energetic, bouncy, 80's tunes. I'd suggest Erasure as a band. Their debut album was EVERYWHERE for months, and rightly so. It's one you just want to play on repeat. Wham also DOMINATED for years. Individual songs: Deacon Blue - Twist & Shout, Housemartins - Happy Hour, Hue & Cry - Labour Of Love, and Maria Vidal - Body Rock.
SO glad you played this fantastic fun fun fun song. Love Jimmy. Sarah Jane Morris is the woman singing with JImmy. I love her too. My favourite song of hers is " Me And Mrs Jones"
God this brings back memories....1980's night clubs....real tunes...sorry for being old....but in my humble opinion....nothing comes close to the power of these tunes!!
7:22 "Yeeaaahhhh"
Great reaction to this great song.
Greetings from Ecuador 🇪🇨, great song in the 80s.
This was a massive hit in the UK in the 80's - always a floor filler in the nightclubs, those were the days!
I really love the way you guys get in to it. Rock on 🤟
Thank you for your super good reaction to the Communards. We totally partied on this song in the eighties. Super fun
Classic 80s UK tune played in every club in town back when we were young 👦
Watching you guys enjoy this iconic 80's song is the bomb 😂😂❤
The keyboard player, Richard Coles, now a retired vicar.
The best part was watching your eyes get bigger at the extended "Ahhhhhhhhhh........baby!" :D
The moment the guy recognised the song was magical.
Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes was the original singer to this track back in 1975, then Thelma Houston done a cover of it in 1976 then the Communards in 1986
The right reverend Richard Coles (pianist) used to be the vicar of st Mary's parish church in finedon Northamptonshire England. And has a great sense of humour
Play this song in any pub in the UK and within seconds there will be people up dancing to it?
Yep totally remember this nearly topping the charts here in NZ it stalled at No.#2 due to Run DMC ‘Walk This Way’ at the top. Back then in the 80’s any cover versions that were good or amazing like these ones’ normally charted well. ‘Smalltown Boy’ is the first time ever hearing the male lead singer Jimmy in the band Bronski Beat. A classic and his vocals are stella!
Was this '86? I remember we had a huge dance party to mark the end of year 10 at school and it was one hit song after another. Choir Boys, Bananarama, Bowie... I think we finished the night on this one. Such great memories! Thanks Melkor! I remember Jimmy's earlier work with Small Town Boy. That was good too.
What a great song, always turn this one up full blast.
Me too it's so full of energy ❤❤.
This reaction video brought me such joy! Thank you ❤️
The pianist in the Communards is now a church of England minister, TV and radio star in the UK - The Reverend Richard Coles - he is also a huge gay rights activist
Great piano by the now Reverand Richard Coles 👏👏👏👏
No, this is the cover. Pianist is Richard Coles who went on to become an Church of England vicar. His husband died a few years ago and he is now retired, but writing murder mysteries.
I have a superb 23 minute 12inch remix of this song on vinyl. Amazing vibe.
Ha...that was fun! Thanks guys
Your reaction was fantastic thanks a lot loved this song when I went clubbing way back
actually this is a cover of the original, this was the biggest selling single here in the uk in 1986.
i bought it on 12inch
correct
Sylvester!!! And, y'all got stoned before this one... LOVE YOU TWO!
i forgot just how good this is
Drummer is killing it!
June Miles Kingston on drums. She slays it.
He's a lovely little mover.
Jimmy Somerville is another great Scottish singer
Banger .
June Miles-Kingston on the drums.
Richard Coles who was playing the piano is now a vicar. This version was a cover and not the original but in my opinion was the best cover.
I love your face reaction and your joy
This is the cover!
The original was by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes in 1975! 😁
So ?
I think thay both of you would love volbeats old song ''the human instrument'' i love it and think it's strange that no one reacts to it. Sadly theres only one live video of it but its amazing.
Love love love this one 💗 ❤️ 💖
7:25. That is, of course, the correct reaction to this music. You’d have to be dead to not at least tap your feet to this song - especially the club edition
I miss the eighties so so much ☹️☹️☹️☹️
So cold the night, extended version (over 9mins)...Try it, you won´t regret it.
Love that song soooo much!
The reverant Richard on piano
80s was awesome and fun!
the Reverand Richard Cole on piano
Great reaction 💯💥💫
This is an all boys band....great tune.
This is a cover of the other one. Thelma Houston did the definitive version in 1976.
The best "funky" 80'
Thelma Houston first did this in the 70s. Yep she was Whitney's cousin
Don't forget to mention that this video feature some of the amazing sexy dancing of Jimmy. What a mover!
And the electricity between him and Sarah Jane is palpable. Rock on Jimmy!
Travis, I believe you're thinking of Geena Davis.
❤️
7.27 dude looks like Beaker 😂
Catch their cover of "Never Can Say Goodbye"
Yes yes yes... oh my god I was 20.
very good
Great reaction Great song but when you're slogan said welcome to the family , I immediately thought of Charles manson and his family
The keyboard player is now a Vicar for the Church of England.
No this is the cover off harold melvin and the bluenotes
gotta try Mighty Real by jimmy sommervile ...the singer in this vid
We don't play baseball in the UK so haven't a clue
so funnyyyy
Sara jane morris ❤
Sounds like the EP or twelve inch version.
Great song. Loved the Thelma Houston one but this one is really a smash!
The pianist is now a vicar/priest now I think
Your correct the Reverend Richard Coles, just retired. Sadly lost his husband a couple of years ago. Great personality, does some uk TV look him up xx
This is the cover
So?
@@lennu7898so what?
Fantastic 80's tune that. I would recommend The Cranberries - Zombie if you haven't already heard it 👍

Sorry guys but Thelma Houston made this song famous in the 70's, the cover is ok but it's not as good as her version which was also a cover. You should check out her version.
React to metal Medley-muse
Yeah but an amazing cover
Please react :Machinery of torment-skullflower
You that she looks like Geena Davis???
Your hat is on backwards
Seldom you have a women and man singing and the woman has the deeper voice.
This is a cover, a great one but a cover. You 2 really need to get out more. The 80's were great for fun dance music, but if you call yourself a rocker, lol, you need to explore the 70's and 60's. Back when artists were talented enough not to need computers to make them sound good.
You two aren’t funny
First time I see u and I fell in love. I had some pot and your reaction is amazing.
Friends to have..
Jimmy....
