Enola Gay was the name of the aeroplane that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima, this song had huge significance as it was a reminder of what could happen again as us who grew up in the 80's spent everyday being scared many petrified about the super power tussle between The USA and The USSR sparking a worldwide nuclear war. There were programmes and adverts on the TV almost everyday as to what to do in the event that it would happen and the 4 minute warning of annihilation.

There are so many amazing OMD tracks. They were real innovators and used a lot of sampling and ‘weird’ sounds. This is a straight up pop song, except they always had unique lyrical content. Try Souvenir, Joan Of Arc (both versions), Electricity, Messages. Great melodies.

"Living on the Ceiling" or "Waves" by Blancmange
"Temptation" or "Crushed by the Wheels of Industry" by Heaven 17
Anything, literally, anything from It's My Life and either "Today" or "Talk Talk" from Party's Over from Talk Talk.
Just for shits and giggles, something more modern from Imogen Heap, "Goodnight and Go", "Headlock" and "First Train Home"

If you get the chance to see them live, Dereck, then definitely do so - you'd love them. They're one of the very, very best bands I've ever seen live, right up there with Ultravox.

Good recommendation and reaction. This was the first OMD song I ever heard and when I realized what the song was about I always felt guilt whenever I would start moving to it and still do to this day, because of the subject matter. But, can’t deny the awesome synth work. Dereck, I find it interesting that you mentioned a couple of times you were reminded of Midge Ure listening to this song. While Midge did have success as a solo artist (more so in the UK), he’s more associated with Ultravox, the band he fronted who were making their mark on pop music during the same time as OMD were and they kind of had parallel career paths. OMD had more success this side of the pond simply because of their US #1 mega-hit “If You Leave” which was in the “Breakfast Club” soundtrack and gave them exposure they probably would not have gotten otherwise. But Ultravox (with Midge Ure) did have success in the US thanks to MTV heavily featuring their videos for “Reap The Wild Wind” and “Dancing With Tears In My Eyes” (both brilliant). So, good catch by you, and good ear as well. I can’t not give a recommendation now LOL 😂 . There is a song by Ultravox which is a little more obscure, but, I think you’d be impressed by called “White China”. The single version is good, but, the extended version or the “Razormaid!” version kick!

You're entirely right - the mix of acoustic and electronic music at this stage was magical. Alchemy of the highest order.

What a glorious slice of yummy 80's pie! Always loved this one. Btw, the way to pronounce Midge Ure's surname is easy - it's exactly like the word "your".

The last name of Midge Ure is spoken like "you're".
And I second the request for more OMD and especially for Maid of Orleans which will make you fall in love even more with them.
In my eyes they are the true synth giants of the 80s, together with Depeche Mode and maybe also Human League (especially their early stuff)

Good to hear some omd. Try some blancmange. You'll find some Moog on the later work

Well said. One of the few 80s bands who aren't just resting on their laurels.

Try some Nitzer Ebb or Front 242 & Bel Canto or Cocteau Twins. I think you'll enjoy these synth indie bands from the 80's. Love your excitement!

Oooh yeah.. Early 80's Baby. New Wave Synth Pop Rock British Cold wave and stuff.. God bless the 80's. BTW (wikipedia sucks..) they don't only use a drum machine but also accoustic real drums. 🙂 Love From France!

Enola Gay by OMD along with Forever Young by Alphaville were known as the "New Wave Anthems"

Finally some OMD... I'm waiting for Kraftwerk's Autobahn reaction....

Yes! Kraftwerk would be amazing to react to. OMD and countless other 80s UK bands (Human League, New Order just to name a couple) cite Kraftwerk as major influences and reasons for pursuing music.
