Man, this stuff is like nerd heaven for metalheads. Can't get enough of it. Lucas mentioned Beastmaker at the end, I actually discovered them a few months ago. Classic doom sound, definitely worth checking out.
Combining metal with this highly literate and verbose sense of speech and logic is so refreshing, magnetic, and entrancing. I cannot thank BANGER enough for their stuff
many thanks to all the mentions here for Solitude Aeturnus! Just checked out song samples and purchased their "Alone" disc after hearing just TWO tunes! Great riffs, stellar vox,the whole package!
Robert Lowe is one of the most underrated metal singers of all time. That dude's range, vibrato, and presence is off the chart. He's up there with Halford, Dickinson, Tate, Dio, and Warrell Dane in my eyes
Guys, you forgot COUNT RAVENs "Storm Warning" from 1990. It was released before any Electric Wizard and Cathedral record and it has Christian Linderson on vocals, who's now part of Lord Vicar and Goatess. It's an essential record and influenced lots of bands!
BangerTV, really like LockHorns, but find it hard to keep track of all of the names on the board, would be really awesome to either have a quick rundown of the bands at the end or a still, or add them into the description of the clip on youtube. Keep up the good work!
Does anyone know bands that are closer to Bell Witch? They're my entry into funeral doom and it depresses the shit out of me that more bands don't have something closer to their sound.
Embarrassing that you have a doom metal special and the expert doesn't know about Solitude Aeturnus, they are legends of doom metal. And previously not a fan of Candlemass epicus? that's criminal! haha
Ruuths Inn the guest is incompetent! He seems like a hipster doom rock dude. He is a poser! Cathedral is total doom and Solitude Aeturnus is epic as well.
Yeah this is pretty unbelievable ... I've been listening to those bands for at least thirty years and they have always been a touchstone ... hard to believe that anyone who claims to be a 'doom expert' would not know the catalogue of those two bands!
My favourite doom band has to be, the criminally underrated 'Horn of the Rhino'. Unfortunately they are not with us anymore. They brought the most gigantic riffs out of Spain, a country not very well known for metal. As a friend of mine once said, 'if Godzilla listened to music, this would be his band'.
Psalm 9 by Trouble is definitely essential, though I would argue that The Skull, their second album, is as essential, if not more as a Doom album. The whole album as a whole is incredible.
I agree. I'll be turning the volume way up because I cannot hear it very well, and all of a sudden one channel becomes two and will have to lower it because it's louder than a thrash band and might break my ears as well as the speakers!
SLEEP...for me is both Doom and Stoner. More on the doom side but there are elements of stoner in the Holy Mountain album. I also think Black Sabbath's 1st album is the first Doom album of all time.
as much as I love sleep and electric wizard, I think that both are more stoner doom, because they definitely both have the blues influence, they both have the sabbath influence, but with sleep there's an element of desert rock/stoner and with electric wizard while the occult is there that blues element as well, they both have that slowness and heaviness of traditional doom, but they have the stoner and blues elements that traditional doom tends to have with less frequency. I'm not against calling them doom, but if you do, you kind of open the door for the melvins and sludge, and blackened doom, and death doom and really any band that is more doom than not, I'm perfectly fine with that as I am less a fan of traditional doom, but since the rules were drawn the way they were, I think you have to leave a lot out
He got the bit about Demon Lung by Electric Wizard wrong as it is a bonus track from older material and thus discounted an incredibly important album because of it. Also not knowing about Solitude Aeturnus is as weak as his crappy band.
I wonder if Coven's "Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls" should have made the list. They were doing the same kind of slow, bluesy, occultish proto-metal as Sabbath, but dropped that album a year before Sabbath's self-titled!
any death doom conversation needs to include coffinworm, there are black metal elements in their music too, but it is mostly filthy, disgusting, amazing death-doom
You said you are doing traditional doom only...Electric wizard and Sleep are stoner/doom and i am not so sure about Yob...Pagan altar - Volume 1 and Solitude Aeturnus - Into the depths of sorrow should be here since both albums were relatively early and were doing something new at the time.
So, if a leaf falls into a pitcher of water, it's no longer a pitcher of water? That's not how musicology works. Electric Wizard is "Stoner". Sleep and Yob and Pagan Altar are "Doom". Can there be elements of Stoner within a Doom metal band? Yes. Can there be an element of Doom in a Stoner band? Yes.
You actually solicited an opinion from a supposed doom expert and then proceeded to ignore her suggestion!! Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus are an essential pairing!!!
I was wondering the same. She would’ve actually been a much better co-host than Mr. “I’ve never listened to any Solitude Aeternus, & I just got into the first Candlemass right now” 🤨🙄
Ghost only had one album that I would argue was metal. The rest is like satanic-themed hard rock. I love Ghost by the way, and even recently their musical experimentation has been top notch
Lucas made my heart go pitter-patter right off the bat. I love Powerviolence, so there's that. But he said the three magic words of heavy: Corrupted Grief Noothgrush Corrupted's US tour in 1997 was some of the best live music I have ever seen. I've held every heavy band to that standard ever since and they just don't reach the bar. Is there anyone who writes better heavy riffs than Gary and Russ from Noothgrush? Grief are champions. Their simplicity is wonderful. Their heaviness is mammoth. Their misanthropy is quintessential.
Everyone talks about Bell Witch doing the hour twenty minute song...but Corrupted had an album that was a single 100 minute song! While being a Japanese band using a Spanish title for it!
Where can I find this Witchcraft that is the giant white magic marker? Looks like a Sharpie, but must erase. Is white, as the pure driven snow, yet black as the heart of Emperor on the exterior. I must know of this phenomena...please inform.
Malakh Tikkun I agree! He mentions Grief and Noothgrush! 2 bands that didn’t make the Sludge tree when that Natalie chick did that debate that belong on there!
Forest Of Equilibrium is entirely essential to this list... Should have had a magnet for that to begin with. Confessor also possibly one of the most underrated bands who, despite the technicality of the drumming, kept the doom flame alive and meet the silly requirements of the genre. Divisive act, but essential for sure.
The furthest I have explored Doom has been Black Sabbath, but I know Cathedral formed before My Dying Bride but I'm surprised My Dying Bride wasn't added with the album As the Flower Withers. Is it because they are more of a death doom band or 1992 was to new compared to the other bands that were discussed?
Hey guys, can't you get a Mic boom and just use that as "1" mic for the room, and plug it in to the mixer so that the sound doesn't change from camera to camera (the cam mics)?
We've tried this in the past, unfortunately all our issues are software related. Programs are constantly updating and TH-cam is interpreting different programs in different ways. We appreciate everyone's patience and suggestions, no one want's these issues fixed more than us.
hey guys, how come you have never covered Paradise Lost? Still going strong, they dominated the UK/ European metal scene all through the 90S.The Peaceville label produced some very unique bands.
This is about Traditional doom my son and although I love Paradise lost asking for them to be on the list shows how genre uneducated you are. that band started as Death Doom and became a rock/ gothic rock band. Neither of those categories are real doom metal. No arguments can be made.
Hi Sam. My suggestion to fix your live stream audio problems is to get in touch with Joe Rogan's tech. He podcasts live flawlessly. The tech troubles that you have really put a damper on your show.
Cathedral (Mourning of a new day) Solitude Aeturnus, Anathema, My Dying Bride - this is Doom to me. The earlier bands just don't capture a depressing atmosphere, IMO. I'm loving these Banger lists though. \m/
I love this show but I agree with some other people that the technical difficulties can be a bit frustrating. I just wonder how it constantly keeps happening whether it's crackling audio, clipping audio, panning issues, drop out issues, video audio sync issues. I don't know, it just confuses me. Awesome vid otherwise!
Where's Anathema and My Dying Bride? Their early albums are masterpieces of the genre. Here's some other good ones: Process of Guilt, Mar de Grises, Reverend Bizarre, The Morningside and UFOMAMMUT. Also, fuck Drone!
Man, this stuff is like nerd heaven for metalheads. Can't get enough of it.
Lucas mentioned Beastmaker at the end, I actually discovered them a few months ago. Classic doom sound, definitely worth checking out.

Robert Lowe is one of the most underrated metal singers of all time. That dude's range, vibrato, and presence is off the chart. He's up there with Halford, Dickinson, Tate, Dio, and Warrell Dane in my eyes
Solitude Aeturnus is worth at least 2 records on any doom essential albuns list..
100%
Guys, you forgot COUNT RAVENs "Storm Warning" from 1990. It was released before any Electric Wizard and Cathedral record and it has Christian Linderson on vocals, who's now part of Lord Vicar and Goatess. It's an essential record and influenced lots of bands!

THERE NEEDS TO BE A FUNERAL DOOM EPISODE
BangerTV, really like LockHorns, but find it hard to keep track of all of the names on the board, would be really awesome to either have a quick rundown of the bands at the end or a still, or add them into the description of the clip on youtube. Keep up the good work!
Sleep - Dopesmoker is the best journey you can take in your bedroom ever
You need to do a funeral doom episode. I don't think it's big enough for an essential albums episode, but it deserves an episode.
Mournful Congregation, Evoken, Funeral, Skepticism..
Awesome bands dude.
@@Antifascista89 : HellLight.
@@nephilidaearanae3665 hell yesss

Just getting into the sub genres of metal, and your show has helped me so much. Thanks for being awesome, and keep this awesome shit coming.

Ruuths Inn the guest is incompetent! He seems like a hipster doom rock dude. He is a poser! Cathedral is total doom and Solitude Aeturnus is epic as well.

Yeah this is pretty unbelievable ... I've been listening to those bands for at least thirty years and they have always been a touchstone ... hard to believe that anyone who claims to be a 'doom expert' would not know the catalogue of those two bands!
it's not a big band but Isole is a fantastic Doom metal band that's worth checking out.
Yes!! Horn of the rhino kick ass
I really like Sam Dunn's interviewing style. He's my fave.
He makes me - crazy. With his weird - Shatnerian pauses. But I appreciate - his knowledge of heavy - metal.
He's cool. But I wish he wouldn't say "But I digress" in every episode.
Psalm 9 by Trouble is definitely essential, though I would argue that The Skull, their second album, is as essential, if not more as a Doom album. The whole album as a whole is incredible.
Did not expect Bell Witch to be mentioned here. Really great episode it was.
Church of Misery, Count Raven, Hour of 13, Goatsnake, Lord Vicar etc. ?
Stephan Fay church of misery fuck yes !
Sarah! Excellent to see you on Lock Horns
But unfortunate to see her pick was just forgotten about a minute later - despite it definitely being an essential!
Electric Wizard over Reverend Bizzare is uncool but I dig the show!
Cathedral? Forest not good? Oh the sacriledge! :P
Guy was definitely not the right one for the show for more than this one reason…
How can doom icons Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus be a point of discussion whether they're doom or not? İ can't even ....
these technical difficulties are getting real old
agreed, more sound issues etc shame as the show is good otherwise
I agree. I'll be turning the volume way up because I cannot hear it very well, and all of a sudden one channel becomes two and will have to lower it because it's louder than a thrash band and might break my ears as well as the speakers!
Not a word about Draconian...Go check em out guys, they only have 10 albums since 1994...
How in the bloody hell can you host talking about essential Doom albums and not even know about Electric Wizard's Dopethrone?
SmoktimusPrime I think it's because they are talking about tradicional doom, not stoner doom
It’s stoner not doom
@@matthewbateman1017no its definitely more doomy than stoner

I always saw The Obsessed more as Stoner Metal

Lucas Gadke was one of the best guests ever. I love his nerd talk and background trivia.
He was cool. Unlike that guy who was on the Nu-metal episode, annoying he was
He got the bit about Demon Lung by Electric Wizard wrong as it is a bonus track from older material and thus discounted an incredibly important album because of it. Also not knowing about Solitude Aeturnus is as weak as his crappy band.
My 30 seconds of glory at 26:31 hahaha Wow! Seriously that Reverend Bizarre record should be in any collection if you call yourself a ''doom fan''.
You're damn right!!! :)
They're about as heavy as you get.
forest of equilibrium is straight doom
I wonder if Coven's "Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls" should have made the list. They were doing the same kind of slow, bluesy, occultish proto-metal as Sabbath, but dropped that album a year before Sabbath's self-titled!
YOB is my new favorite band of the moment. I had never heard of them until this airing. Super down!
November's doom..my dying bride should also be on here
They're doing traditional doom metal. Novembers Doom and My Dying Bride are Death Doom.
ik but still lol
also they should do death doom and include Rumemagick
any death doom conversation needs to include coffinworm, there are black metal elements in their music too, but it is mostly filthy, disgusting, amazing death-doom
Jackson Watkins Coffinworm has some of the most hideous (in a good way) sounding music ever. It is like aural disease.
Picking Saint Vitus Self Titled is the correct answer. Scott Reagers wipes the floor with Wino.
The best album i heard all year is a doom metal album: Khemmis- Hunted
Jamie Laszlo it's so good!
my favorite was relentless by pentagram
Audio issues constantly annoying

Spiritus Mortis - The Year is One
Best Doom released in again (apart from Candlemass' The Door to Doom)

It was a traditional doom top 10. I would also like to see a doom/death top 10
Silent film about doom metal.
Where is Stillborn? theirs Necrospirituals is a must in any doom collection.
Awesome. Thank you, Sam as always. Long Live Banger TV.
