The amount of Jedi and Sith in the times when SWTOR takes action was so large they let regular players take a role of one. While in the movies Jedi and Sith are basically extinct.
I.M. Meen that's because in the movies, the sith basically were extinct. Remember there were only 2. And it's because of that the Jedi started to get picky with who they chose to train. Remember, anakin, the boy with a higher midichlorian account than yoda himself, was only trained bc it was qui gon's dying wish, not bc they actually thought he deserved to be trained. So the Jedi's numbers started to fall because they didn't think there was a threat.

timothym2011 this is when the sith officially came out of hiding under the emperors orders and struck the republic. after re taking korriban and sacking coruscant, eventually a treaty was signed to create an armistice between the empire and the republic (the treaty of coruscant). this was then known as the galactic cold war. the game is about 300-400 years after knights of the old republic and the revan novel. the last 2 trailers are at the end of this galactic conflict and tell of the rise of the eternal empire, but the emperor is still present throughout that time period as well.
