Well some of the council members ARE Valyrian, such as the man who offered his 12 yr old daughter to the king for marriage. The scene with the maggots was my favorite. In that scene we see that King Visyres wound on his hand has only gotten worse and its the wound he got when he sent his brother away, the wound, like their relationship has festered. Also the symbolism there, the King's hand is rotten. It could be physical and a reflection of Otto Hightower, who pretty skillfully manipulates the king into marriage with his daughter.
getting his daughter a marriage to a kind king is like getting her a winning lotto ticket. At least by the standards of the time he did right by his daughter.
Otto didn't do anything wrong. All he does is to protect the realm and, of course, push his house further, which literally everyone do. Daemon only causes trouble to everyone.
@@georgechapman9688What a ridiculous thing to say. He didn’t do right be her, especially if you’ve read the books and see how it turns out. And she never wanted to marry Viserys, she was repulsed at the thought of being with him and although she did grow to love him as the king and as her husband, she NEVER wanted to marry him or be queen. So Otto didn’t do right by Alicent, he did right by Otto. All he ever wanted was his blood on the Iron Throne, and he pimped his young daughter out to a man as old as him to get what he wanted.
@@georgechapman9688he did not do right by his daughter tho, his daughter very clearly did not want this. she was groomed into it and felt like she had no other choice, that’s not doing right by your child no matter how much political advantage it gets your child
Many of the riders had passed since Jahaerys reign (the intro of the series), so these dragons live in the wild (like Vaghar, who is mentioned by Laena) or in the dragon pit, and Viserys has alienated himself from the remaining riders politically speaking, Rahenys the queen who never was is one of them and Daemon. So you can see why the crown is perceived as weak
The acting of this episode was top notch, the expression of Rhaenyra when she noticed the marriage of her father to her best friend Alicent was priceless amazing.
I thought Vermithor is the largest at the time? I always assumed the top 3 were Balerion, Vhagar and then Vermithor-The Old King’s dragon. And obviously Drogon would grow quite large in Game of Thrones
@@1297skypredYes I also love how they fall under different breeds and Iam personally excited to see the wild dragons in later seasons especially sheep stealer

Thank you! Just know he takes a lot of pride in those intros. It never makes it on the intros, but just before he is saying "bring the energy boys" lol
He should have wed Laena Velaryon, which he wouldn't have to bed her until she comes of age. In that time, he can guide, teach, and prepare Rhaenyra how to be the next ruler since she wasn't suppose to be one. Laena Velaryon is the daughter of the richest man in the realm and th daughter of his cousin "Rhaenys Targaryen" the queen who never was. Targaryen and Velaryon are the only two surviving houses of Old Valerya and house Velaryon is the most loyal house to the Targaryen reign, so refusing their daughter over Otto's Hightower's daughter is very insulting+ seeing how the king already ignored the problem of the crabfeeder that's gonna make their loyalty shake a bit. Laena is considered to be the safest choice because she has pure Valeryan blood, she is half Targaryen which will make their bloodline pure (that's why they are committing Incest in the first place: to keep the dragons within the family only and dragons is what's keeping them on the throne). Now seeing how Otto has the king in his grasp, marrying his daughter will give him even power. Otto sent off Daemon, he is controlling what kind of power the heir can have, destroyed the cousins relationship (the queen who never was and viserys) and pissed off the loyal follower... he is basically isolating the king.
this show has ppl saying crazy things like “he should have married the 12 year old girl”. this show is feminine horror, watching baby laena recite the lines she’s been groomed/coached into saying is so heartbreaking
22:23 To answer your question: Dragons are weapons of mass destruction in this age, sure, and they do have a lot of them. But unlike modern WMDs, which only requires pushing of a button to use, the Targaryens need their own family members on top of those dragons to use them effectively. Thus every time they use dragons, some princes or princesses would be in potential jeopardy. So they tend not to use those on a whim.
You’ll discover why the dragons are rendered useless against the Crab Feeder in the next episode. A lot of viewers say it’s not as high tempo right now, but they don’t understand it’s only showing the backstory of all the important characters and houses so it’s familiar when the main story begins later in the season (I believe). I’m really enjoying these reactions to the episodes and can’t wait for more! Also, the time line is a little different to the books. Rhaenyra was actually nine when Alicent and King Viserys were married, and Alicent is actually nine years older in the books, but I like how they played it out with the pair being best friends (Alicent js probably a few years older), and now we can see how their relationship develops from this friendship to step-mother/step-daughter.
Ten dragons was mentioned as part of the previous generation. Now there’s just a few. “The Queen Who Never Was”, Rhaenyra, and Daemon are the three with dragons. Maybe other still small ones (plus the wild ones). So they don’t have a huge arsenal of dragons under their control or anything right now. (Considering Rhaenyra’s is also kinda young and without “battle” experience.)
True, but if you know anything of history and the life expectancy in the Middle Ages, 10-15 was the equivalent of 20-25. Again, gross by today's standards and rightly so, but that was the reality of the times.
@@JonInCanada1 This is actually a very common misconception of life back then. Only nobility and royalty were the ones marrying their daughters off at such young ages because of politics, but outside of that, people were marrying around 20-25. Also, teen marriage contributed greatly to a woman's short life expectancy. In the books, Aemma was barely a teenager when she married and fell pregnant with Viserys. It contributed greatly to her struggles with pregnancy and eventually premature death.
In the books the age gap wasn't that huge, I believe it was about 10 years. Viserys is supposed to be like 29, I believe, they aged him up quite a lot, that's why his brother, who was supposed to be about 26/27 looks so much younger than he does.
From the way I counted it (it is not entirely clear, give or take 2 years or so) in the book Alicent is 12 years older than Rhaenyra and 8 years younger than King Viserys
Thank you, you guys are fun. Its one thing to have dragons, but you need dragon riders. Corlys has children that can ride dragons, but I think the King only has his daughter. This is going to become more important has things progress.
@@Caraxes_RoguePrince literally not a spoiler it's been said from the original series that targaryens were the masters of dragons. Laenor and Laena have targaryen blood
@@technicoloredzebra every Targaryen didn’t tame a dragon tho…it literally is a spoiler Lmfao. Just because you have Targaryen blood don’t mean a dragon that is born will choose you. Maybe the dragon you was meant to tame is still in a egg I mean but just hasn’t hatched yet.
I think the reason why Viserys personally wanted Alicent to be his wife was because she resonated with him the most, he didn’t want a wife he wanted someone for comfort and closure. Also that Viserys obviously isn’t comfortable marrying a 12 year old. Regardless it was really a poor choice strategically and politically to pick Alicent.
In the intro to Ep 1, when they said House Targaryen had 10 adult dragons, that doesn't neccessarily mean they had 10 dragon riders. In fact I'm pretty sure that during the Great Council, they only had 3 riders. The Old King (Viserys' grandfather) himself, Daemon and Princess Rhaenys (Corlys' wife). Now the old king is dead and his dragon is riderless but Rhaenyra can ride Syrax. So of all the dragons available, only 3 have riders by the end of this episode, and Syrax + Rhaenyra are both quite young.
I was so surprised how you immediately guessed Ser Criston Cole as the choice. :D The scene in the sept with all the candles and quiet sadness is really lovely. I love Rhaeneya standing up to Daemon and Daemon being quite impressed by her gumption. There is definitely respect there. And it feels like he's doing all this crap to get his brother's attention, after being spurned. He's very complicated so far.
You gotta remember that kingsguard are supposed to give up any house alligences to serve the king, they dont take wives or enherit land or titles, so actually, Rhaenyra's choice was the best (don't think she was actually taking his looks into consideration, he impressed her during the tournament because of his fighting skills, he defeted her auncle who shi idolized) In the original show was mentioned how chosing kingsguards based on political advantage has turn them into a laughing stock, not really the best warriors as they were supposed to be but political pawns
The rogue Dagon, Vhagar, is the last of the original 3 Aegon conquered Westeros with. It's nearing like 180 years old. And , fun fact, in this world Dragons never stop growing.
Well, that's the thing. A marriage is just a contract. You don't HAVE to do anything about it, and certainly not right away. I've heard of married couples that never had sex because one or both were asexual, and neither one had any need in doing anything about the sexual side of marriage, and just were married as a loving partnership. Viserys could have married Laena and while, yes, they were poking at him for more heirs, I think the solid alliance with the only other House left from Old Valyria was far more important than heirs, so that could have waited.
Only targaryens can ride dragons and King's own dragon ( balerion) is dead so he is dragonless as he didn't bond with any other dragon. So he doesn't have dragons at disposal, those dragons are either roaming in wild or in dragonpit.
Great reaction and really happy y’all watching it…Rhaenyra know her uncle loves her and that he wouldn’t hurt her. Choosing the 12 year old and waiting until she came of age was easily the better move politically and it’s not even a comparison. (Yes we know it’s disgusting but you gotta take yourself out of the equation and look at it from the views of back then) Also the Targaryens a incest family it happens all the time. Corlys Velaryon is lord of driftmark and he’s valryian just like the Targaryens that’s why he got silver hair but his house can’t ride dragons. Just because there are dragons don’t mean there are dragon riders for them tbh and the ones that do usually only bond with 1 dragon.
Yes, Rhaenyra and the King were the only two who could have EVER called Daemon's bluff, because they are the only two people in the world who he loves. I even got a whiff of pride from Daemon in his defeat to his niece, who is growing into quite a formidable woman! I agree with you that the smart move would have been to marry the little girl. The few years for her to age up are not a lot and it would bring stability to the kingdom. As for dragon riders, remember that Targaryens place a dragon egg with their newborn children. We know of 2 Targaryen parents: the king and his one child, Rhanerya and The Queen That Never Was - who has TWO. Count the dragons by the Targaryans.
@@lanakane7325 tbh I think daemon was proud of her and because they have Targaryen blood mean they can ride a dragon yes but it don’t mean any dragon would pick them tbh the dragon is the one who holds more of the say…Like daemon I’m sure got a egg as a kid but he ended up bonding with his uncle dragon when he was already a adult I think or at least 18 and it was after his uncle had died…Yo dragon might be a egg that’s yet to be hatched so just because they have dragons in the pit and a Targaryen don’t mean they can ride one but more than likely they will find one given how many dragons they do have.
@@lanakane7325 yea because there are some untamed dragons like they said vhagar is somewhere and there are more that just haven’t been tamed. That’s why they like to give the babies eggs in the cradle so they can have a connection/bonded before they hatch. Of course the Targaryens would try until they can find one that bonds with them tho I mean more often than not they would find one. These dragons are way more thought out than the original show tbh…like daemon dragon is said to be singing to female dragons that’s why his scream is like that if you noticed lol.
Just because someone dose something wrong all the time dosn't make it right. Just imagine that child was your own daughter or niece. This is not a movie showing historic events it is a fictional world so we have every right to feel disgusted. We also have every right to be disgusted by wrong things done in historic time. For example should I be not disgusted about people who burned innoncent people as whitches just because they didn't know better? It's compareable to wedding of children. -Forced/arranged marriages also mean that most of the brides are acutally raped because the consumation of the wedding is important.
the age thing is icky, yes, but in the books everybody is super young - Daenerys was 9 when the books start, lol. When you see how things start to shake out, Viserys made a mistake here😉 glad you guys are loving it, I think it's great and Caraxes is AWESOME. Best dragon design yet, but wait til you see Vhaegar!!! 🐲🐲🐲🐲🐉🐉🐉
Thing with the prospect of marrying the younger girl he could have said he would like to wait until she was of age and give himself time to grieve his wife. And still save face with Corlys but now both the sea dragon and his daughter are pissed
7:45 - arranged marriages worked, especially when divorce was an almost impossibility and marriage almost mandatory. Two families working together can better figure out if their children are a match; unlike the children who are impulsive, emotional (as most teens/early adults) and they don't know the real world as well as parents. If you have a 17 year old daughter that HAS to marry, would you rather her choose a cool, slightly older guy, who smokes and has a bike and is so popular.... or would you choose a son of your friend, who has never been in trouble, has a job and a career, doesn't drink or smoke and is a good son to his parents?
I only recently discovered your channel. I'm glad you are covering this show. I just came to add that I LOVED your simultaneous disgust at the sight of that child discussing her sexual/childbearing viability with the King, who has 30+ years on her. She was the right choice politically, however, but it was hard to watch.
There are quite fewer claimed dragons at this particular point, but the main problem with just sending dragonriders to blow everyone up is that this strategy does not win you a war. Battle - yes. War - problematic. It's an infestation of pirates throughout a whole archipelago and backed by 3 of the most powerful political entities of the neighbouring continent to boot. You can't blow it all up in one attack not to mention the political fallout. Dragons are often compared to nukes for a good reason. You have power if you have nukes but they are hardly applicable in every situation.
I was thinking of when Catelyn Stark promised Arya, who was 10, to Walder Frey’s son. When she bargained for Robb. At least Alicent is 18, at least she is in the book. I think she truly does care for the king, and her father is such a bully he stresses her out.
PHENOMENAL SHOW!!! So happy you guys are bringing us along with you on Game of thrones fantastic Return!!! All the episodes are great. Can’t wait for you to see episode 3 😎 Bravo HBO
Fun fact: they STILL use maggots today. Nothing clears away the necrotized flesh in a bedsore better than maggots, allowing the healthy tissue to take over.
You're right about Viserys. In the source material/books, it's made a bit more clear that he's quite weak, as a king. He's not bad or unintelligent or lazy or apathetic. He's just a complete people-pleaser who wants to avoid conflict at all costs. He avoids anything too serious or negative, and just wants good times, all the time. He hates nothing more than to see people disappointed or upset. So he's a total pushover, and many of his advisors, particularly Otto Hightower, like it that way. Viserys is an extremely lovable, sweet man, but an absolute failure as a king. This version of Viserys is much more competent than the original version. I don't usually like changes like that, and I do think it made some things a bit confusing with his character arc, but he's very well written and acted in the show. This version of Viserys is more complex and wise, in a way, and so it's much more tragic of a story because of it. Even the author of the books says they made a better version of his character.
Now that I think about it, there's nothing wrong with 'tourney knights' 😂 In episode 1, we saw the jousting tournament turned into mortal combat. It was a bloodshed. Those tourney knights were pretty hardcore 🤘 And yeah, betrothal 'back then' was pretty iffy. But mostly they were purely political in nature. Or as they said it, it was 'duty'. If one would seek another lover outside the marriage, it could happen. Pretty common than not.
There is a portrait of a trouney knight with a splitted lance sticking out of one eye (It's hanging in the castle close by the city live in), it seems he didn't die right away. Beside I think some european King died in tournament.
I’m a pretty emotional person so I had to take that out and look at the age thing clinically and relative to the situation. Life spans were greatly reduced during this time. The elite class were a small percentage of the population but were responsible for the good of the small folk. If marrying a rich pampered princess at the age of 12 kept thousands of them from being killed? No easy answers.
Rhaenyra is now the heir to the Iron Throne and no one on the council respects her and just look at the scene, Otto cut Rhaenyra off when she was speaking and Viserys didn't do anything in that situation. If it was Daemon he's already shutting everyone up, mainly from Otto, in the scene with Rhaenys it's Rhaenyra, everything Rhaenys said to Rhaenyra is true, Rhaenyra is heir to the iron throne and yet she continues to give them wine, but the truth is she is participating in the council, but as Rhaenys Said they won't want a woman Viserys shouldn't have married Alicent he made a wrong choice and now there will be consequences for his choice, Viserys should have married Laena in the book she is At least Rhaenyra's age unlike in the series they put a child I don't know why they did that Probably to be more controversial because it's a child, but anyway he should have chosen Laena and not Alicent and you'll realize that his choice was a mistake when you watch the rest of the episodes.
You guys disagree about marriage to Laena but that WAS THE BEST CHOICE 10000%. This is Westeros get over the age thing they won't bed till she is of age...there was 8seasons of Game of Thrones and people are still tripping lol...I get it but the way people act the realm would be DONE FOR
I hate how people still haven't figured out yet that GoT or HOTD doesn't shy away from the realities of the Dark ages. This was common-place. Women were objects. Marriage was purely political and advantageous. It's exhausting how people keep expecting our modern ideas to be represented in period piece shows 🙄
@@midnightmadness7156 it’s like people don’t care to pay attention or care to know that’s how things were back then in real life lol (not talking about these guys) but tbh lot of reactors also acting like they forgot the Targaryens a incest family as well 🤣🤣
@@midnightmadness7156 I agree, when people reflect our morals onto a story that doesn't have our modern days morals it kinda kill the vibes.. It's a fiction and you better follow its rules otherwise you won't be able to enjoy anything.
Even though the dragons are fun, I always liked the political aspect of GOT the most. That is why Littlefinger was one of my favorite characters. Hopefully, they will keep the political intrigue front and center with House of Dragon. From a political standpoint, I can see why Rhaenyra would want Laena to marry her father and not Alicent. Laena and Viserys would not consummate their marriage for at least 2 years. So it would be possibly 3 years before a male heir would be born (possibly more if the first child is a girl) and there is no guarantee the king would live that long. Laena is also very, very young and therefore malleable. Queen regnants have often times been the power behind the throne or the downfall of the powerful men in the country and at her age, she would never be able to stand up to the powerful men in the country. She would have the power in name only but men like Daemon and Otto HIghtower would actually be the ones in power. So with all the political maneuvering, I can see why some would have wanted Laena as queen.
Regarding the number of dragons, they might have more dragons, but currently the only Dragon riders are Rhaenyra the princess with Syrax, Prince Daemon with Caraxes and Rhaenys, the queen who never was and wife of Corlys Velaryon with her dragon Meleys. Which means the only dragon truly under Viserys' power is his only daughter and heir- I can understand him not wanting to risk her over the stepstones. But it shows how weak the current grasp of the Targaryens is on power - they are only just holding on. And pissing off Corlys Velaryon, in light of this, was a bad political move. You know you are watching a GoT spinoff when the 12 year old would have been the better choice.
@@aj897 In the episode after this, I dont know if they wtched it yet and want to avoid spoilers. Because there is also Laena who is a dragonrider as well.
Amazing reaction guys! I just wanted to add that yes, this was the decision -Viserys marrying Alicent- that started to unravel everything and little by little it started to weaken their reign to the point of them being overthrone by the Robert -as we know in game of thrones- and it is awful, as you said, because both options were terrible, neither of the girls should have been in that position😑
Tbf... in the books, Alicent is older than Rhaenyra, being around 18-19 years old. So Viserys choosing her is no that strange comparing to much young Laena. Also the marriage (w/ Laena) would be just a formal contract for some years until the king could "bed" his wife and have kids... giving her (Rhaenyra) more time to deal with all this. Imo, making both girls close to age, friends and confidents adds a lot more colors to the conflitcs ahead. It is a really great adaptation choice.
Rhynerea definitely feels like Danyrias from GOT to me, and I'm sure I've spelled both those wrong, I too am struggling with names. I do think Alicent was older than Rhynerea by a few years, but yes still young.
@@rachichi4092 Supposedly most of Europe in 2022 age for consent is like 14 to 16 I don't know how true that is but in Ireland and UK it 17 but 18 is where most people are ok, well within reason like 🤣 40 and 18 is still kinda wired like in book and irl 😅🤣

My thing is, he didn't even have to marry, he coulda jus betrothed
The acting of this episode was top notch, the expression of Rhaenyra when she noticed the marriage of her father to her best friend Alicent was priceless amazing.
The Dragon she was asking about is the largest and oldest Dragon in that period it belonged to Aegon the conquerers oldest wife Visenya ,
I thought Vermithor is the largest at the time? I always assumed the top 3 were Balerion, Vhagar and then Vermithor-The Old King’s dragon. And obviously Drogon would grow quite large in Game of Thrones

Technically, the Baratheons are of Valerya ancestry as well.
Incest it never a good idea if you want healthy children.
this show has ppl saying crazy things like “he should have married the 12 year old girl”. this show is feminine horror, watching baby laena recite the lines she’s been groomed/coached into saying is so heartbreaking
The sounds Daemon’s dragon makes always reminds me of the Wyverns that the Nazgûl’s rode

Thank you Duha. And great tidbits here.
Yes, and King Viserys is quite a bit younger than portrayed here. He’s only in his 30s, I believe.
Yes! Just rereading and it said Alicent was 18 and Viserys was not yet 30.
Simply not true 😭
They do have a huge arsenal of dragons ….

@@michellehawk282 the show hadn’t shown that yet. So I was trying not to spoil it
It's utterly disgusting that people used to marry 10-15 year olds, but it happened and is actually still happening
unfortunate truths
@@cheapPixel true
@@cheapPixel Some nobels were even betrothed on birthbed or when they were younger then 10.
Daemon would not lift a single hair on his niece and she knew it.......she knows what kind of a man he is
Thank you, you guys are fun. Its one thing to have dragons, but you need dragon riders. Corlys has children that can ride dragons, but I think the King only has his daughter. This is going to become more important has things progress.
Thanks, JC. And thanks for watching and this tidbit🤙🤘
Why spoil who all can ride dragons?? Makes zero sense to say that
@@Caraxes_RoguePrince literally not a spoiler it's been said from the original series that targaryens were the masters of dragons.
Another great reaction video from you guys! I liked how Quinn said he come home & binge watch GOT longer than he been at work last video hehe.
I was so surprised how you immediately guessed Ser Criston Cole as the choice. :D
The scene in the sept with all the candles and quiet sadness is really lovely.
Good call out on that.
@@Caraxes_RoguePrince Gotcha! I haven’t read the books but I love all the dragons. That’s the only reason I finished the horror that was GOT.

The answer to your question comes next episode, just wait. 22:40
I only recently discovered your channel. I'm glad you are covering this show. I just came to add that I LOVED your simultaneous disgust at the sight of that child discussing her sexual/childbearing viability with the King, who has 30+ years on her. She was the right choice politically, however, but it was hard to watch.
Definitely hard to watch
Viserys doesn’t like conflict and so he’s isn’t using the dragons. He’s a people pleaser
His choice of heir makes it seem otherwise

I hate youtube sometimes lol. I had that there previously.
Those tourney knights were pretty hardcore 🤘
And yeah, betrothal 'back then' was pretty iffy.
Beside I think some european King died in tournament.
you guys are genuine
much appreciated. Thank you!
If it was Daemon he's already shutting everyone up, mainly from Otto, in the scene with Rhaenys it's Rhaenyra, everything Rhaenys said to Rhaenyra is true, Rhaenyra is heir to the iron throne and yet she continues to give them wine, but the truth is she is participating in the council, but as Rhaenys Said they won't want a woman
Viserys shouldn't have married Alicent he made a wrong choice and now there will be consequences for his choice, Viserys should have married Laena in the book she is At least Rhaenyra's age unlike in the series they put a child I don't know why they did that Probably to be more controversial because it's a child, but anyway he should have chosen Laena and not Alicent and you'll realize that his choice was a mistake when you watch the rest of the episodes.
As you can see the crabe dude as a "sons of the harpie" mask on and it seems that he has the scale desease like princess Shereen ! Maybe a clue ?
You guys disagree about marriage to Laena but that WAS THE BEST CHOICE 10000%. This is Westeros get over the age thing they won't bed till she is of age...there was 8seasons of Game of Thrones and people are still tripping lol...I get it but the way people act the realm would be DONE FOR

I hate how people still haven't figured out yet that GoT or HOTD doesn't shy away from the realities of the Dark ages. This was common-place. Women were objects. I totally agree with you guys 😂

Just you guys wait till you see Dreamfyre. She’s a beautiful blue dragon and thought to be the mother of Daenerys dragons
Tbf... in the books, Alicent is older than Rhaenyra, being around 18-19 years old.
