  • Ram 1500 EcoDiesel fuel economy test. This Ecodiesel is a very fuel efficient engine with ram claiming 27 MPG, so I tested this engine out in the real world to see is really that good. I also compared the Eco diesel to the HEMI in my own Ram 1500 to see how much better the diesel engine is in these ram 1500 pick up trucks.
I set out to determine just how fuel efficient the ram 1500 Eco diesel is on the highway. Lots of folks have told me about the amazing fuel rating on these trucks so I wanted to test is out for myself! I also thought it would be cool to compare this engine to my Hemi because the Hemi is actually a pretty efficient truck on the highway.
First we tested out the Hemi on a 40km highway loop and we averaged 12.0Liter/100km or around 19MPG. Next we got the notorious Eco diesel on the highway and it blew the HEMI our of the water averaging 9.4 Liter/100km or 25 MPG.
I also did the math on the real numbers in terms of total fuel burnt vs total distance and the numbers were very similar. obviously the trucks both said they were slightly more efficient then they actually were but thats to be expected
lastly I got in my 98 Chev with a 5.7 L small block and did the same loop just to show everyone how far the pick up truck has really come in 25 years. it average a pretty poor 13 MPG LOL.
Hope you guys liked the video!

That's amazing mileage from the HEMI! I have a 2008 Dakota Quad Cab with the 4.7L Gen III Engine. I get about 16.6 combined, driving about half my miles on the highway/half city. Man that 4.7 is thirsty.

My Duramax 3.0l diesel gets between 26-31mpg on the highway with the computer usually underestimating the mpg when I calculate it at the pump. Better if I keep it between 55-65. I've gotten as high as 35 on the highway on flat terrain keeping it at 60.

Sounds like the eco diesel would be a better buy outside the USA. In the USA diesel is so much more expensive. Although eco diesel might be more reliable??

I have a 2014 Big Horn crew cab with a Hemi and 3.92 gears. Contrary to popular belief at the speeds your driving I can get 21mpg. If I keep it on cruise, which I always do on the highway, I can get between 19.5 and 20.5 on the highway at about 75 mph. That tells me that as long as you’re not hammering on it and keep your speed steady it will get that even with the 3.92’s. Plus it accelerates faster and easier wich could improve city mileage.
BTW. I’m running Falcon Wild Peak AT3’s

Dang!! I can only wish I also have 4 inch lift and 35s but they being said I have 3.92 gears as well even with the lift and tires I’m still getting 17 to 18 on the highway. Which is not horrible for being lifted! I think the 3.92s help

2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ecodiesel here... picked it up a month ago. I am not sure what those numbers (3.92, 3.21, etc) I am also pretty new to car mechanism. But my JGC ecodiesel mostly averaged at 10.6L/100Km and when accelerating from full stop(normal pedal press and not floored) the indicator always showed at around whopping 50l/100km. I guess this all depends on the Quality Control and mine happened to be kinda a lemon.

I have never reset my Trip B since I've owned my 18 eco diesel big horn with 3.55s. With just over 60,000 miles, the trip meter shows 24.9 average since I've owned it. That includes towing. I have a 7,500 pound travel trailer and pulling 8 and 10 percent grades near me can be an issue when its 95+ degrees out. Also, I recently upgraded the tires to 34" 275/65-20 Nitto Ridge Grapplers. I don't recommend this. These tires are heavy! 68 pounds each. So about 120 pounds heavier than stock. Will go with C range tires next time. Now I am regearing to 3.92s to compensate. I bought a front carrier for 700.00 with 21 miles on it on eBay and will just regear the rear end. My local dealer is going to flash the transmission with the 3.92 shift points. I expect to see about 20-21 all around now, but better all around towing experience.

@@TheGettyAdventures I had a 2007 Tundra with 160,000 on it and I was hit by a driver that ran a red light texting in California. I replaced it with the ecodiesel. I’ve had Toyotas all my life. This is my first Dodge. So, we have a few toys and the goal was to get the diesel for the fuel economy and I could still tow the toys (couple quads) from time to time. Then, we bought a travel trailer that weighs 7,500 pounds. I was surprised how well this towed the travel trailer until I put the 34”s on there. The original tires were 33’s, but a lot lighter. I was getting 14-16 towing. Anyhow, this is one of the best vehicles I’ve ever owned. The interior is miles ahead of Chevy/GMC. All the controls feel nice. I’m still not crazy about the early motor issues. Would really like a new one. But I’d trade it for my old 1980 Toyota 4WD short bed with 515,000 miles on it anyday. That is, if the bastard who stole it would sell it back to me!

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@floydndaisy I can say 100% with certainty that the RAM interiors are light years ahead of the Chevy and Ford. I am pretty skeptical of the eco diesel I'm not going to lie, but like you my father in law has an eco diesel and tows a pretty large travel trailer pretty regularly and he has had next to no issues with like 300k on it. I think the big difference is that he actually drives the truck hard and diesels seem love that.
And yes Toyota makes a hell of truck there is no denying that. I would love to have a Tacoma to whip around and have fun with!

25% better mpg and cheaper cost per gallon is a win win in my book! You should really break it down to the cost per mile.

    • @billbriggs6741

Doing the math and converting the info to my local fuel prices ($4.88/gallon 87 gas, $5.68/gallon diesel) the Hemi will cost 25 cents per mile and the diesel will cost 22 cents per mile (if you don't know how to calculate the price per mile it is easy, 1 divided by economy times the price of fuel) I would like to see how the 3.6 V6 performs.

The probability of catching on fire is less likely than lifter/cam failure on the Hemi... I know a guy thats just had lifter failure for the 3rd time on his third hemi ram... thats some pretty good odds.
