as a caring person who dwells in this painful reality with you, ask yourself these questions: (1) is your god all-knowing and all-powerful? (2) will everything in this mortal realm proceed according to your god's plan no matter what us mortals pray or cry for? (3) how, then, is your god not responsible for the bad (and the good) that has happened to you and your family? (4) has everything not proceeded according to your god's plan? these questions were my first foray in to critical thinking about truth versus fiction, my faith and the (unwarranted) justifications of such, the horrendous commissions and omissions of god, the origins of the various holy books, etc etc etc. in the end, all religions are cults and vice-versa.

When that girl sang she bring tears to my eyes aressted development wasn't no joke they had a message in that song this is real art and music that moves your spirit todays music i feel knumb and restless
Yessss! Just heard this driving the other day, I cranked it up bc this is a classic but the lyrics hit me differently as a much older person now. I loved, love, will always love this song
So good to hear this song again, it sounds even better now than it did back then. I like how in this video everyone in the background is just doing there own thing also, makes a nice change from all the choreographed stuff.
Pure nostalgia, makes me want to gather all of my friends in a field with a loud ass speaker and just go back in the days and vibe to all the 90’s hits. When music had its innocence.
I saw Arrested Development in 1993 at the Horden Pavilion in Sydney Australia and they were off the hook. Their sound live exceeded expectations and brought the house down. In addition they incorporated Aboriginal dancers into the show and encouraged audience participation. In the second encore they did Tennessee and led into Washed Away. I've been to a lot of amazing live concerts but this one was the most fun.
I first heard this song when i was 19 in '92 when i came out and it hit hard. Now at 50 this hits even harder. Listening to and understanding these lyrics has me damn near in tears.
"I ask you, Lord why you enlightened me Without the enlightenment of all my folks He said, cuz I set myself on a quest for truth And he was there to quench my thirst BUT I AM STILL THRISTY✊🏾, The Lord allowed me to drink some more He said what I am searching for..." Hits home!

@@Speechofficial Hey Speech! Man, it really is you! I'm a huge fan! I'm from Tennessee and this song meant so much to me as a youngster. The whole album was so unique and in a league of it's own. Y'all are so talented. It's a pleasure and an honor, sir! Just subbed and rang the bell.
Arizona, United States . Is where I am now but would rather be in SA Uppington South Africa ... or my mother land of Greece Megalopolis! America is over rated filled with poison and Kaos
I'm a white guy from New England and this song still feels so relatable and clarifying. Speaks to the power of good writing and deep thought behind the lyrics.
This is still relevant in Tennessee. Racism still thrives, systemic oppression is a tool for the rich and white. Old money still thrives off of the theological foundations of slavery turned capitalism, romanticizing clansman as a past time brought down generations until present.
I am the whitest man in the history of white men. I love this song. One of the best songs ever made. Speech is so cool! He looks cool just standing there. Genius, pure genius!
Speech is one the most underappreciated Mcs of all time. He brought that southern hip hop to the masses back when no one knew the south would later become so popular in music.
I saw them live at Lollapalooza in 93-94. And this tune- specifically the "won't you help me- take me home" vocal solo- -literally brought tears to my eyes. One of the most impactful musical experiences of my life. So much better live.
I also first heard this on the latest episode of Raising Kanan too. I’m 34 and a true hip hop head since the mid 90s watching MTV The Box . But I never heard this amazing classic record
“I ask you, Lord why you enlightened me Without the enlightenment of all my folks He said, cuz I set myself on a quest for truth And he was there to quench my thirst.” Shout out to all my brothers and sisters navigating survivor’s remorse as we succeed in life while dealing with the grief of our family and friends being on different paths…
REAL HIP-HOP! I bought this cassette soon after the album release. I played it so much, I had to upgrade to the CD. 💿 Definitely in my top fave 20 albums of all time.
"...climb the trees my forefathers hung from..." As an adult when I finally got the meaning of that line and the rest of the song it just shook me to tears. Like realizing what Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit" was about. This was the jam then and still is now. But with a lot more appreciation for its message and meaning. AD way way ahead of their time! Pass this along to a young person. Young people, please, -- LISTEN UP!
Fun fact, Strange fruit was originally written in the early 1900s. A man by the name Abel Meeropol wrote it, and he published under the name Lewis Allan. Billie Holiday sang it and made it hers in 1939.
That's Prince saying Tennessee!!! Its a sample from his song Alphabet Street. He found out, contacted Speech & told him his people had waited until the song peaked & charged $100K for it based on how much they made off the song. Speech met him & his wife (Mayte) at Paisley Park & said he was the coolest because he learned a lot. He apologized & appreciated that Prince could've had the album pulled because of it until it was settled in court & charged more. Prince was socially conscious, liked their message & appreciated Speech's honesty. I didn't know Speech wrote this as in the song after going to his grandmothers funeral in Tennessee & the same week his brother had an asthma attack & died. Prince is also his favorite artist.
@@JK2OJacko Prince could of sued them til they were blue in the face instead he just took a little check ( 100k in the music business is peanuts ) and let them be because he liked the song
For sampling a voice saying a single word, in a song that TEACHES people our forgotten history? That is not what a forward-thinking, socially-minded person does. Especially when he is already beyond rich! Prince, brother, what were you thinking...?
I recently revisited this album and have been listening to it pretty regularly. Man, what a great record! It holds up really well. I wasn't paying particular attention to the lyrics as much as I do now. Man, it's some heavy stuff. Real poetry. I remember winning a radio contest in 1992 and this was one of three cassettes they sent me as my prize! TLC's and Jon Secada's first albums were the other two. Speech is the man. RIP Baba Oje. He was cool.
Just turned 40 yrs old this year and this song means so much to me when I was younger I liked the song but it didn't really make sense but now that I'm old it hits differently.
I worked in a record store when this came out. I just wanted to play it in-store over and over. I was a white kid who listened to alternative rock and knew no black people personally, and this album reached deep into my heart.
Lord, I've really been real stressed, down and out, losing ground Although I am black and proud, problems got me pessimistic Brothers and sisters keep messin' up, why does it have to be so damn tuff? I don't know where I can go to let these ghosts out of my skull My grandma past my brother's gone, I never at once felt so alone I know you're supposed to be my steering wheel, not just my spare tire (Home!) But Lord, I ask you (Home!) to be my guiding force and truth (Home!) For some strange reason it had to be (Home!) he guided me to Tennessee Take me to another place, take me to another land Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan Take me to another place, take me to another land Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan Lord it's obvious we got a relationship Talkin' to each other every night and day Although you're superior over me We talk to each other in a friendship way Then outta nowhere you tell me to break Outta the country and into more country Past Dyesburg and Ripley Where the ghost of childhood haunts me Walk the roads my forefathers walked Climb the trees my forefathers hung from Ask those trees for all their wisdom They tell me my ears are so young (Home) Go back, from whence you came (Home) My family tree, my family name (Home) For some strange reason it had to be (Home) He guided me to Tennessee (Home) Take me to another place, take me to another land Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan Take me to another place, take me to another land Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan Now I see the importance of history Why my people be in the mess that they be Many journeys to freedom made in vain By brothers on the corner playin' ghetto games I ask you, Lord why you enlightened me Without the enlightenment of all my folks He said, cuz I set myself on a quest for truth And he was there to quench my thirst But I am still thirsty The Lord allowed me to drink some more He said what I am searching for are The answers to all which are in front of me The ultimate truth started to get blurry For some strange reason it had to be It was all a dream about Tennessee Take me to another place, take me to another land Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan Take me to another place, take me to another land Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan Oh, won't you let me, won't you help me won't you help me understand your plan Take me home, take me home, home, take me to another place Take me home, take me home, home, take me to another place

I feel in love with your group due to my older brother who was in high school at the time would just hangout at our house with his friends and play Arrested Development ALL day. I love it and it brings back found memories and is apart of the soundtrack to my life and I did the same playing your music around my younger sister and brothers who were not much older than my kids and we All jam out to Arrested Development. Music that feeds the mind and the soul. I am a new subscriber by the way. Shalom!!
As a child, I didn't exactly understand, but I knew this spoke a language that wasn't heard before in the media. This was my elementary school in the 90s. Horseshoe! And now, as an adult, I am moved to my core watching this video. Incredible
This is real music This is true artists This is real hip hop This is a good song from a good album I wish I could Turn Back in time When real good music was true
As an agnostic, it seems that atheists still have some sort of moral compass to steer them in the right direction, but when they break down they have no spare tyre. Be glad you've got God in the back.
This song is a masterpiece on mulitpr levels, including cinematic effect. Most astoundingly, it is perhaps the only hip hop or pop song to consist of a prayer. I love it.
I love this song. It is so very deep. "I know your suppose to be my steering wheel, not just my spare tire. But lord I ask you, to be my guiding force and truth!" "Take me to another place, take me to another land, make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan." This is a very deep proclamation for this African American man. He is speaking about the present and the past, his current life, and the lives of the slaves that are his ancestors. One of the most profound songs ever written. I am so very happy that I grew up with them as role models. :)
won't u help me, won't u help me, won't u help me understand ur plan. take me home take me to another place. that part still hits my soul When she sings it!
This song can still bring tears to my eyes. Truth! They were about 23 years ahead of their time. "I climb the trees my forefathers hung from." -That hits you right in the soul.
Sooo I am 41 years old and use to love this song. Would sit and really be into the video but I was too young to understand. Today I am blown away at the lyrics that seem like lyrics I’ve never heard before! This is soooo deep!!! And to think 30 years after this song came out I went on the same journey he speaks of! 😭😭😭
Arrested Development is not just a different proposal but unique and exquisite in many ways. Is pretty amazing how good this song have been aging, like a exotic wine. Poetry for the fans of well performed music.
Possibly the greatest and most revolutionary hip hop track ever in the mainstream. Modern Rappers and rap is light years behind these times and groups, where songs had meaning and rhythm.
Still jamming to this in 2019. When the sister starts singing take me home, my eyes just well up with tears and love for my nubian people, and I pray to the Primordial Mothers, we will once again unite in love, compassion and trust among each other collectively. I love my people. Thank you honorable ancestors for enduring a horrific holocaust so your descendants can be here today.
I was about 12 when this was new and on TV all the time, and I loved it then and I love it now. I grew up in a very working class city, surrounded by all types of kids, but I was mostly into Metallica and stuff like that. I was always around other kids from different backgrounds and different struggles, we were all the same, so racism really pisses me off. I got no tolerance for it. We grew up together, teaching each other stuff and sharing music at school. Listening to this today after many years and watching this video again, man, shook me up. Timeless.
I remember jamming out to this song in 4th grade... and I still do! Something about this time era of music. Kriss Kross, Naughty by Nature, Michael Jackson, Prince, George Michael, Janet Miss Jackson if youre nasty, TLC, SWV, Paula Abdual... geeze, so good.
I love this song and this classic video. Even though the song was inspired by Speech's grandmother and brother's passing, the lyrics are also socially conscious speaking so much truth to African Americans, reminding us who we are , never forget where we came from, and to ALWAYS keep God in your life for guidance especially through hard, tough times. But my favorite part of the song is @2:25 ✊✊✊
Blk consciousness in the 90’s was unmatched

This was too much truth. In the 90's it all switched to what sells to whites: gangsta rap.

92 was a platform year of what real hip hop was to be. The 90s were special

Okay..being 40 and listening to this, let me tell you...it hits much differently than it did when I was 11!
It's way different
I can't listen to it without crying
@@susiecarmichael5423I'm 43 & strongly agree
I saw Arrested Development in 1993 at the Horden Pavilion in Sydney Australia and they were off the hook. Their sound live exceeded expectations and brought the house down. In addition they incorporated Aboriginal dancers into the show and encouraged audience participation. In the second encore they did Tennessee and led into Washed Away. I've been to a lot of amazing live concerts but this one was the most fun.
I first heard this song when i was 19 in '92 when i came out and it hit hard. Now at 50 this hits even harder. Listening to and understanding these lyrics has me damn near in tears.
"I ask you, Lord why you enlightened me
Without the enlightenment of all my folks
He said, cuz I set myself on a quest for truth
And he was there to quench my thirst
BUT I AM STILL THRISTY✊🏾,
The Lord allowed me to drink some more
He said what I am searching for..."

I'm a whitish woman from Olde England, and it even resonates with me. Got the cd back in the early 90's, but unlike cd's this music never gets old.
This is still relevant in Tennessee. Racism still thrives, systemic oppression is a tool for the rich and white. Old money still thrives off of the theological foundations of slavery turned capitalism, romanticizing clansman as a past time brought down generations until present.

Speech is one the most underappreciated Mcs of all time. He brought that southern hip hop to the masses back when no one knew the south would later become so popular in music.
I wore this cassette tape out during the summer of 92’ . I will never stop listening to this song. Great message laced over the top of a great track!
I saw them live at Lollapalooza in 93-94. And this tune- specifically the "won't you help me- take me home" vocal solo- -literally brought tears to my eyes. One of the most impactful musical experiences of my life. So much better live.
I've known Speech since I was a kid & he is AMAZING. He has such a beautiful family & a warm soul.

I have introduced this music to my son and niece. They loved it. Seems almost more relevant now.
Fun fact, Strange fruit was originally written in the early 1900s. A man by the name Abel Meeropol wrote it, and he published under the name Lewis Allan. Billie Holiday sang it and made it hers in 1939.
I love historical tidbits like you posted! Thanks for the history fun fact. Looking him up! @@yolandawilson9852
Food.
Socially conscious and charged him 100k? Did I read that right?
@@JK2OJacko He could've sued for more for them not clearing the sample
@@JK2OJacko Prince could of sued them til they were blue in the face instead he just took a little check ( 100k in the music business is peanuts ) and let them be because he liked the song
Wow law have report Nanc

SAME
The world was a different place back in 1992.
Every. Single. Time.
I worked in a record store when this came out. I just wanted to play it in-store over and over. I was a white kid who listened to alternative rock and knew no black people personally, and this album reached deep into my heart.
Lord, I've really been real stressed, down and out, losing ground
Although I am black and proud, problems got me pessimistic
Brothers and sisters keep messin' up, why does it have to be so damn tuff?
I don't know where I can go to let these ghosts out of my skull
My grandma past my brother's gone, I never at once felt so alone
I know you're supposed to be my steering wheel, not just my spare tire
(Home!) But Lord, I ask you
(Home!) to be my guiding force and truth
(Home!) For some strange reason it had to be
(Home!) he guided me to Tennessee
Take me to another place, take me to another land
Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan
Take me to another place, take me to another land
Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan
Lord it's obvious we got a relationship
Talkin' to each other every night and day
Although you're superior over me
We talk to each other in a friendship way
Then outta nowhere you tell me to break
Outta the country and into more country
Past Dyesburg and Ripley
Where the ghost of childhood haunts me
Walk the roads my forefathers walked
Climb the trees my forefathers hung from
Ask those trees for all their wisdom
They tell me my ears are so young (Home)
Go back, from whence you came (Home)
My family tree, my family name (Home)
For some strange reason it had to be (Home)
He guided me to Tennessee (Home)
Take me to another place, take me to another land
Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan
Take me to another place, take me to another land
Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan
Now I see the importance of history
Why my people be in the mess that they be
Many journeys to freedom made in vain
By brothers on the corner playin' ghetto games
I ask you, Lord why you enlightened me
Without the enlightenment of all my folks
He said, cuz I set myself on a quest for truth
And he was there to quench my thirst
But I am still thirsty
The Lord allowed me to drink some more
He said what I am searching for are
The answers to all which are in front of me
The ultimate truth started to get blurry
For some strange reason it had to be
It was all a dream about Tennessee
Take me to another place, take me to another land
Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan
Take me to another place, take me to another land
Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan
Oh, won't you let me, won't you help me
won't you help me understand your plan
Take me home, take me home, home, take me to another place
Take me home, take me home, home, take me to another place

I'm here cause I randomly just started singing this twice. ❤
But my favorite part of the song is @2:25 ✊✊✊
Lexi Allen ..
While its beautiful and powerful in its poetic afrocentricity, I always loved how universal many of these lines and prayers were to any person
Also, as I wrote somewhere else on here, 2:25 is my most beautiful part as well. Breaks me down every time. Lord bless!
2024 love this always well done arrested development 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
