I'm a white guy from New England and this song still feels so relatable and clarifying. Speaks to the power of good writing and deep thought behind the lyrics.

This is still relevant in Tennessee. Racism still thrives, systemic oppression is a tool for the rich and white. Old money still thrives off of the theological foundations of slavery turned capitalism, romanticizing clansman as a past time brought down generations until present.

I am white. I grew up on a farm in the middle of nowhere. I remember hearing this song. (I was/am a huge music fan) this made me cry. My parents didn’t “really” teach me about different cultures. I learned on my own. At 11. I was crying over this song. Then it just went from there... have been studying black culture, and learning for years. (Still do not know everything) my family would laugh at me for “not wanting to be white” after learning history on my own. This was when I was about 12. I felt sooo ashamed. But now that I am MUCH 😂 older, I realize I can help other people just learn and understand. I don’t have to be ashamed for being white. I can stand for rights for others! I can help other people find peace, and love for EVERYONE! 💕💕🙌🏽🙌🏽✌🏾✌🏾

Jodi Kerns, do you still feel ashamed for being white? Don't be...God has called on us to be who we are. Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?
It's a dishonor to hate what God created (different races). Don't be ashamed of your skin tone because our ancestors wanted to hate and not love.
Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.
Love your neighbor the same as Christ loves you.
Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.

I’m white, but I can put myself in a similar situation in my life and feel the emotion the music portrays. I may not share common experiences, but we all share the same emotions. It’s a hip hop, blues, and gospel tune. Nicely done, Arrested Development!💕

Thats true, we as white people need to be able to talk about the atrocities our ancestors did to an entire race of people without getting defensive over the issue, that way we can have a better understanding about this society we live in now, and can actually contribute as best as we can to healing this wound that years of slavery left behind.

Arrested Development was a crazy talented band and in my opinion is one of the most innovative bands ever! They are so unique, it was hard for people to really appreciate the band because nothing else close sounded like them. This band incorporated African sounds, with rap, and gave a modern version of the songs of slaves and their struggles with the lyrics of black pride and proud of their southern black heritage! Tennessee in my opinion is in my top 25 songs of all time!

Man, this takes me back to summers of 92 and 93. Hanging with my friends Jonathan, Gabe, Nappy Jack, Bryce and the rest. We were black, white, hispanic, asian... didn't matter. We were friends, and none of our folks tried to tell us we shouldn't be.
Life has shown me what a unique blessing that was. I appreciate it that much more as I get older.
The nostalgia really hit me just now. I love God, and thank Him for blessing Arrested Development, to make such a beautiful and real song.

Had a crew of friends around that time also....all different races. Didn't matter. We weren't looking for reasons to be offended, but just appreciated good character in human beings, regardless of race. We had come as close to MLK's dream in the mid 80's-90's as we would ever get (yet). Division has been instilled in our society once again, with much of it being political in nature. We have regressed decades in American race relations, and it is a darn shame. Glad we got to experience it. It's really not that complicated....

real hip hop. real message. real feeling. these guys were revolutionary. they produced these songs at a time when gangsta rap was super popular and decided to send a different type of message. songs don't have to be about violence, women, power or money. there can actually be a message that's more powerful. they made it very big for a while, and I'm really glad to see there are young people out there still getting that positive vibe.

as a caring person who dwells in this painful reality with you, ask yourself these questions: (1) is your god all-knowing and all-powerful? (2) will everything in this mortal realm proceed according to your god's plan no matter what us mortals pray or cry for? (3) how, then, is your god not responsible for the bad (and the good) that has happened to you and your family? (4) has everything not proceeded according to your god's plan? these questions were my first foray in to critical thinking about truth versus fiction, my faith and the (unwarranted) justifications of such, the horrendous commissions and omissions of god, the origins of the various holy books, etc etc etc. in the end, all religions are cults and vice-versa.

That's Prince saying Tennessee!!! Its a sample from his song Alphabet Street. He found out, contacted Speech & told him his people had waited until the song peaked & charged $100K for it based on how much they made off the song. Speech met him & his wife (Mayte) at Paisley Park & said he was the coolest because he learned a lot. He apologized & appreciated that Prince could've had the album pulled because of it until it was settled in court & charged more. Prince was socially conscious, liked their message & appreciated Speech's honesty. I didn't know Speech wrote this as in the song after going to his grandmothers funeral in Tennessee & the same week his brother had an asthma attack & died. Prince is also his favorite artist.

Lord, I've really been real stressed, down and out, losing ground
Although I am black and proud, problems got me pessimistic
Brothers and sisters keep messin' up, why does it have to be so damn tuff?
I don't know where I can go to let these ghosts out of my skull
My grandma past my brother's gone, I never at once felt so alone
I know you're supposed to be my steering wheel, not just my spare tire
(Home!) But Lord, I ask you
(Home!) to be my guiding force and truth
(Home!) For some strange reason it had to be
(Home!) he guided me to Tennessee
Take me to another place, take me to another land
Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan
Take me to another place, take me to another land
Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan
Lord it's obvious we got a relationship
Talkin' to each other every night and day
    Although you're superior over me
We talk to each other in a friendship way
Then outta nowhere you tell me to break
Outta the country and into more country
    Past Dyesburg and Ripley
Where the ghost of childhood haunts me
Walk the roads my forefathers walked
Climb the trees my forefathers hung from
Ask those trees for all their wisdom
They tell me my ears are so young (Home)
Go back, from whence you came (Home)
My family tree, my family name (Home)
For some strange reason it had to be (Home)
He guided me to Tennessee (Home)
Take me to another place, take me to another land
Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan
Take me to another place, take me to another land
Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan
Now I see the importance of history
Why my people be in the mess that they be
Many journeys to freedom made in vain
By brothers on the corner playin' ghetto games
I ask you, Lord why you enlightened me
Without the enlightenment of all my folks
He said, cuz I set myself on a quest for truth
And he was there to quench my thirst
    But I am still thirsty
The Lord allowed me to drink some more
He said what I am searching for are
The answers to all which are in front of me
The ultimate truth started to get blurry
For some strange reason it had to be
It was all a dream about Tennessee
Take me to another place, take me to another land
Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan
Take me to another place, take me to another land
Make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan
Oh, won't you let me, won't you help me
won't you help me understand your plan
Take me home, take me home, home, take me to another place
Take me home, take me home, home, take me to another place

I saw Arrested Development in 1993 at the Horden Pavilion in Sydney Australia and they were off the hook. Their sound live exceeded expectations and brought the house down. In addition they incorporated Aboriginal dancers into the show and encouraged audience participation. In the second encore they did Tennessee and led into Washed Away. I've been to a lot of amazing live concerts but this one was the most fun.

I love this song. It is so very deep. "I know your suppose to be my steering wheel, not just my spare tire. But lord I ask you, to be my guiding force and truth!" "Take me to another place, take me to another land, make me forget all that hurts me, let me understand your plan." This is a very deep proclamation for this African American man. He is speaking about the present and the past, his current life, and the lives of the slaves that are his ancestors. One of the most profound songs ever written. I am so very happy that I grew up with them as role models. :)

I was about 12 when this was new and on TV all the time, and I loved it then and I love it now.
I grew up in a very working class city, surrounded by all types of kids, but I was mostly into Metallica and stuff like that. I was always around other kids from different backgrounds and different struggles, we were all the same, so racism really pisses me off. I got no tolerance for it. We grew up together, teaching each other stuff and sharing music at school.
Listening to this today after many years and watching this video again, man, shook me up. Timeless.

Is it weird that God led me to Tennessee as well, and many of the things I've been consulting with Abba are in this song? I asked him today to give me understanding of his plan, and last week people kept talking about horseshoes and it stuck with me. This is a prophetic song. I've also been looking into the history of Israel and the black jews. This is exactly what God is showing these people were Jews. I also asked him why he's showing me these things, and he said because I'm seeking truth. He said the understanding of the kingdom of heaven is only given to some people. Those who seek his truth, and follow it. The Father is Home. If you want to know why you are not home take a look at Deuteronomy 28.

@@shiraz9986 It's a damn shame. It's times like this that hurt the most when people say "Americans are racist." To know that these same people are "American" is a shame. Being Central European you're literally caught in the middle, and yes, never could have imagined this (Before Trump). Good news is NATO is strong, and is only getting stronger, meaning Putin has already miscalculated. I only hope we see the same strengthening of values over here as well, which according to recent elections, that's happening as well. One step back, two steps forward. I recently revisited this album and have been listening to it pretty regularly. Man, what a great record! It holds up really well. I wasn't paying particular attention to the lyrics as much as I do now. Man, it's some heavy stuff. Real poetry. I remember winning a radio contest in 1992 and this was one of three cassettes they sent me as my prize! TLC's and Jon Secada's first albums were the other two. Speech is the man. RIP Baba Oje.
