It's very easy to forget that both roles are played by Frederic March...not just from the makeup aspect, but March's brilliant acting. You'd think they were two different actors.

Chuck Potocki Music-Unlike the 1970s tv series The Incredible Hulk, which was a takeoff of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the role of Dr. David Banner was played by Bill Bixby, while the Hulk was played by bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno. So those characters were played by two different actors.

Director Rouben Mamoulian carefully planned the makeup with makeup artist Wally Westmore. Hyde looks funny and pixieish in the first transformation, scampering around the lab. But as the film goes on, the transformations degenerate (reflecting Hyde's debauchery) until the final transformation in which Hyde looks positively hideous. Still the best version of the short story.

This is the best cinematic version of Stevenson's story bar none. The flair with which Mamoulian embellishes the screen and March's superb performance still hold up brilliantly.

This is such a fantastic shot. Way before CGI or advanced makeup was relevant. Framing it as a single shot, the DP was able to create the illusion of Jekyll transforming into Hyde by having March in makeup already, and then dimming the lights on set. What we get is a shocking and horrific effect that was amazing for this time, and still an achievement for today.

    • @MaximusNYC
      @MaximusNYC ปีที่แล้ว +6

Specifically, they used different colors of lighting. The Hyde makeup wasn't visible under the light used at the beginning of the transformation shot. They slowly faded that light out, and faded in a different color at the same time, which made the makeup visible. Since the whole thing is shot in black and white, the color shift is imperceptible.

One of the greatest actors of all time. To think that March is portraying both characters is absolutely stunning. None of the Hollywood effects and stuntmen to carry the day. This is the definition of acting. Becoming a character and stepping outside of yourself to transform to someone else. Or in March's case, something else. Another comment a viewer made is telling of Fredric March's greatness. He was the first actor to receive an Academy Award in a horror role. Talk about transcending your craft!Benicio del Toro won for the Wolfman many years later. That performance didnt require close to the skill of March's tour de force. Few, if any actors have surpassed the talent of Fredric March. A truly legendary performer.

    • @cylon6
      @cylon6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Benicio Del Toro didn't won an Oscar for Traffic then nominated again for 21 Grams. He wasn't nominated for The Wolfman, the make up was though. Rick Baker won his last Oscar for it, his first (and also the first winner of the Best Make Up category), was for An American Werewolf In London. Quite ironic really.

    Jekyll: September 13th, 11:56 PM.
    I have started this alone,
And I must finish it. Alone.
There is no longer a choice.
I know I must use myself
As the subject of the experiment
    No there is no choice
I must put aside the fears I feel inside
    There's no place to hide
    So it comes to this
One last final chance for me to take
Now everything I've fought for is at stake
Like a warning light, glimmering in red
Like crimson bloodshed, shimmering in red
    Beautiful and strange,
    See the colors change
    Before my eyes
See how they dance and they sparkle like diamonds at night
    Leading out of the darkness
    And into the light.
11:58 PM. I have consumed 10 centiliters of formula HJ7.
Salty, bitter taste. Stings the tongue. Warm in the gullet.
Heat spreading strongly through my veins.
    A slight feeling of euphoria.
    Light-headedness.
    No noticeable behavioral differences
    I must be wise
I must try to analyze each change in me
    Everything I see
    How will it be?
Will I see the world through different eyes?
    Now the die is cast!
    Nothing left to do...
Time alone can prove my theories true...
    Show the world--
    My God! What's this?
    Something is happening
    I can't explain
    Something inside me
    A breathtaking pain
    Devours and consumes me
    And drives me insane!
    Suddenly
    Uncontrolled
    Something is
    Taking hold!
    Suddenly
    Agony!
    Filling me!
    Killing me?
    Suddenly
    Out of breath!
    What is this?
    Is this death?
    Suddenly
    Look at me!
    Can it be?
Who is this... creature... that I see?
    Hyde: Free!
    Hahahahaha!!!!

Three moments that happen before taking a shot of tequila.
0:53-1:02 Bracing yourself before you take the shot
1:13-1:23 the taste in your mouth and the powerful gut sensation (trying not to gag or throw up something)
3:31-3:38 when the loopy feeling / sensation kicks in

0:57 this onwards is such a fantastic shot. I take it that wasnt a real mirror but merely the actor with a frame around him? Also how on earth did they pull off that transformation shot? It looks brilliant, far betgwr than any modern day hollywood cgi transformation you would see today

They put red makeup on him for the dark areas and put a red filter in front of the camera lense to hide it. Then they switch the filter to a blue one in real time and the red makeup shows up very dark.

Mamoulian's camerawork/direction is superb and Frederic March is fantastic. How shocking Hyde's makeup must have been to 1931 audiences. Lon Chaney Senior would have been impressed. A masterful film and the best version of Stevenson's story.

I just realized a strange coincidence. Danny Masterson played the character "Hyde" in THAT 70's SHOW. Now, it turns out that he did truly MONSTROUS things in real life! 😮
I have been a HORROR fan all of my life and just realized that I have NEVER watched a "Jekyll & Hyde" film. I am correcting that oversight right now. 😁

This movie is pretty good, but I really don't find it as frightening or entertaining as the John Barrymore version. The Hyde in this one is more of a sly creep instead of an actual monster. The camera work is outstanding though, I will say.

The Barrymore's Hyde seemed like a possessed demon, I don't know if it's a positive or negative point since I haven't read Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, but I think the image and figure of Frederich March's Hyde is the one we all have in mind, and I think it is the most popular version

I wish this 1932 Horror Classic from Paramount Pictures was purchased in 1958 by MCA (Music Corporation of America) along with the 750 of the per-1949 Paramount sound movies, and later MCA bought Universal Studios. Which means Universal today owns the pre-1949 Paramount sound film library for television rights and Home Video distribution, but this also means DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1932) would be in place with the Universal Studios Monster Collection with Dracula and Frankenstein. But sadly Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer purchased the 1932 movie in 1940 for a remake with Spencer Tracy which is a terrible remake of the Robert Louis Stevenson 1886 classic story. Today Turner Entertainment and Warner Brothers owns DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1932) and the 1941 MGM remake as well. I hope to get this 1932 Horror Classic on BLU-RAY when it will be announced soon in the future!

Including 25 seconds of Ivy’s nude bed scene when she climbs into bed naked, this scene was never shown on the 1989 VHS or the 1991 Laserdisc. Let’s keep our fingers crossed so that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932) will come to Blu-ray and it will be included with my Blu-ray product of Universal’s FRANKENSTEIN (1931) as a Halloween gift!

It's a reflection of how his debaucheries grow worse and worse. He starts out being a karen to the waiter and ends up tormenting, abusing, and ultimately murdering the side girl. Symbolically, his appearance becomes uglier as his actions become uglier.
It's also to show us the degenerative effects of the serum itself. He's wrecking his body with it because being free (of moral constraints) has become a form of addiction. Almost like how someone using meth ruins their health the longer they're in active addiction.
