    It’s actually a very well written and comprehensive book th-cam.com/users/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 . I wanted to pair this with an updated book on local codes to start planning a post-retirement dream shop. I think I have just about everything I need between the two. The extra plans available for purchase towards the end are priced almost as much as full home plans, not little sheds however.

      Winner of a video, I've been looking for "how to stick build roof trusses" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Beybigail Nonpareil Breakthrough - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? It is a good exclusive product for discovering how to create better sheds and improve your woodworking minus the hard work. Ive heard some decent things about it and my co-worker got amazing success with it.

    Love the videos!! On the 2x4 nailed flat to the rafter for gable studs, is there a rafter on the other side or is the other 1 1/2” top side of 2x4 not nailed to anything?
    Wished you would do more videos too

    Your videos are really, really great. I have one question, and forgive me if you've answered it somewhere else. I bought a box of Common Nails 3 1/2 - 16D Galvanized, to begin the upper framing of this small porch I am building. And I tried one of those nails out. They seem quite thick, and to a novice like me, I'm afraid of splitting the wood. Are these the same nails that you use to frame what you are building, like for the ceiling joists and rafters? Thanks!

    • @opictia
      @opictia ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use those or 16d sinkers which are basically a 12d common nail with vinyl coating but if it’s outside I would use the galvanized 16d common nails or you will get rust streaks

      With a hammer I have smashed fingers more times than I can count. A flying hammer can do a lot of damage. Not to mention the potential of bounce-back into your face or ricocheting nails injuring bystanders. I have never been injured by a nail gun and have probably driven 50x as many nails. Use structural screws and cordless drivers if you want maximum safety.

    Hi,
    I have a question. I disassembled a 10 x 12 shed that was going to be demolished that was in perfect shape. The prior builder didn't have any gable ends hanging over, but I want a couple feet on the front and back. The prior shed had the trusses tied in on the top of the framed walls with brackets and the ridge beam up top with brackets. The center ridge beam was a 2x6. Can I just extend the 2x4's on top of the opposing framed walls out two feet on each end and use a longer ridge beam and build the extended gable end that way? Thanks for the info and videos

    • @natealeshire6841
      @natealeshire6841 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cut inch and a half by three and a half inch notches out of the top of your gable rafters so that you can nail 2x4s evey 2 foot from top to bottom. You nailem to the side of the rafter that's beside your gable rafter and they're recesed into the top of the gable laying the flat way and sticking out past your gable rafter as far out as you want to make your eve as wide as you want it. Then you nail your fly rafters to those 2x4s

    Can I use screws instead of nails to construct a house? Including siding

    • @H.A..
      @H.A.. ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's been a while since you asked, but no. Nails and screws have different applications in construction. Nails have shear strength and no pull-out strength while screws have pull-out strength and no shear strength. Your house relies on the shear strength of the nails to withstand an earthquake or any racking force attempting to topple its walls. Screws would simply snap with applied force and soon after your framing would fall apart.

    • @DavidJamesQ
      @DavidJamesQ ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@H.A.. Structural screws can handle shear forces. They will be more expensive than nails though.

    Hi, I'm confused by the pitch of your roof. You stated that your roof was a 12/12 pitch. If your roof pitch is 12/12 shouldn't you be able to stand up in the inside of the roof. So the pitch has nothing to do with the ceiling height. So for 8 or 9 feet ceilings you can have a 12/12 pitch roof.

    • @HistoricHomePlans
      @HistoricHomePlans 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Kevin, 12/12 means that you have 12" rise for everywhere 12" of run, or a 45 degree angle. If the shed is 8' wide it is only FOUR feet to the centerline, or roof ridge. So the attic is only 4' high. I hope I understand your question and answered it well.

    • @RandyLott
      @RandyLott หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@HistoricHomePlans perfectly explained. 12/12 is the slope. It doesn't equate to height without the length to achieve it.

    • @jimmygutierrez-solorio7928
      @jimmygutierrez-solorio7928 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To allow for Drywall screwing, if that plate wasn't their then you wouldn't be able to screw in the drywall. It would just be floating at the end of the ceiling.

    Why not frame the gable into the wall,sheath it,put on the overhangs and any soffit box or queen annes,then tip the whole gable up in one shot?
    Why not build the sidewall overhangs on the wall,skip beveling the fascia and cut your rafters at 6.5" ovrhng?
    Your gable studs should be notched and pitch cut 1 1/2" in so they can be nailed to the side if the gable rafter.
    Too many steps.

    • @H.A..

      Yes, 100% that's a better way to do it, frame a rake wall and stand it up. done! It seems to me though the only people framing rake walls nowadays are the Amish.
