    I love how you give love to looser curls and waves aswell. You don't put one higher than the other. I have waves and big curls not tight. And I've experienced kind of judgement from people saying that it's not curly or naturally curly that I curl it since my hair gets weighed down easily. It's weird and it's hurts my feelings but I'm learning to embrace and love what I have.

      Yeah..I hear you mostly it comes from the snooty curl police society!! I decided to not label my hair and concentrate on getting my hair less oiler and getting 4 days before next wash. I also focus on just making it as healthy and to get my hair to less frizzy as possible. Recently I got me hair to 7 days before washing by exfoliating my scalp before shampoo, shampoo with voluminising shampoo and then let it towel dry with microfiber and put in just a dime size of leave I'm conditioner.

      @@Dana-vq1tk Yeah it was from the curl police haha and some family ! But we got what we got and it's beautiful. Yeah I'm trying to find the balance between defrizzing and not weighing it down! Sounds look you're finding a good routine!! I'm still trying to figure out mine works sometimes it doesn't it's weird.

    This is so encouraging! Most of the curly YT community has big, thick tight curly hair, and there are so many who get catty about those of us with looser curls, telling us we aren't really curlies or only because of the products we use, as if they aren't also using products to get their look. The thing I really appreciated is that she had less volume to begin with and I could see myself more here. I've lost so much of my hair thanks to PCOS, thyroid disorder and perimenopause, so my confidence is knocked. This helps.
    One thing I would love is to help more of us learn how we can do these brush styles ourselves. It's harder to define when we are on our own.

      Curl patterns can change over our lifetime, so always good to update the techniques. Have you tried the overnight heatless headband / sock / robe belt curling techniques? Can you do a roller set with velcro rollers? This is great for volume and long lasting style :)

  • @symbeline
    @symbeline ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I've tried and tried and tried this type of technique (sectioning & brushing right side up) and it's the messiest, most complicated thing ever. In the videos it always looks so straightforward but in real life if you have a lot of fine hair it's impossible to part, brush and scrunch without getting it tangled with the next section etc. Takes forever and I end up re brushing everything once I have product everywhere because it never falls perfectly in place no matter how hard I try to properly separate and style each section. Upsidedown is a quick second, doesn't look perfect and evenly distributed but it gets more volume and if you wash, style and diffuse upsidedown it really simplifies things.
    Not criticizing the video, I love Mell and I've been following her for years, but in real life this is not a quick, beginner routine. Doing everything upsidedown it takes me a full hour from the moment I start shampooing to the moment I stop diffusing at like 70% and it doesn't look perfect, it's neither defined nor beach-y sexy but the alternative is adding a good extra 30m to get a half-assed job. I wish it was really simple but it's not 😢 if anybody has tips and tricks to do the right side up, definition & volume method without taking forever to style, getting all the sections tangled, taking forever to section, style and diffuse I'm all ears 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

    Love seeing wavy girls in your videos.. i struggle so much because my hair is literally between 2c & 3a so half of my hair wants to be bouncy curls and the other just waving around (some almost straight) and I‘m still not sure how they want to be styled (and they also changed because of dying my hair during my journey so the curls got looser) really hard to find a routine/product for defining without loosing to much volume especially because I have low-med density🙈

    This might sound dramatic but I really need these wavy videos. I'm a wavy and I've been having such a hard time accepting my hair. I'm mixed race but have my Irish mother's skintone and (I thought) straight, fizzy hair. All my brothers got my dad's side big, dark, curls and olive skin. I've always felt like I don't look like I belong in my own family. Realising it's not frizz, it's actually some of my dad's texture coming through, has been life changing in how I see myself but a lot of the curly community seems to exclude waves. When I see you caring for wavy hair like this, I feel a better about myself. So thank you because I needed that.

      Mine is like that too! If I let it do its own thing, it can't choose between whether it wants to coil or wave. We wavy-curlies might have the trickiest hair because it's on the borderline of two types, so no one advice category is going to make things easy for us.

    I loved this! Kate's got a very similar hair type and length to mine (2c to 3a, somewhat fine and thin) so this was really helpful! The tip to avoid parting at the crown is exactly what I've been looking for - this has been one of my biggest issues with a lot of curly hair tutorials and I've never, ever seen anyone properly explain how to combat it. I would love to see more videos showing how to achieve some good results with different styles (eg. 2nd and 3rd day looks, when your curls are a little too funky to wear down) on this hair type.

  • @Silverhaired59
    @Silverhaired59 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I just tried this routine, not quite dry yet, but looking good (except where I forgot myself and scrunched after making the curls!) . Mell, one thing that really helped me is what I made note of in my second viewing. You tension-brush the section and let it fall onto your second hand. That really helped me keep the half-done part away from the done, hanging parts, so I would not miss any curl families. A simple thing that you do naturally was something that I needed to add to my technique. Thanks, with work, I think this is going to be good for me, and faster and less stressful than my old way!

    MORE WAVY Information please! Just discovered this channel so I'm excited to watch more. It always bothers me that I see the curly hair videos and everyone's wet hair is still so curly. My wet hair is mostly straight yet it is definitely a wavy curly mix after it's dried. My curl pattern isn't as strong (again when wet) so I always feel the information just doesn't seem to work on my particular hair type. Plus by the end of the day it seems the majority of my "style" has fallen out. I am definitely always looking for more wavy girl ideas.

    I love this! I would love to see you do a series where you style other people's hair for them; that way we could see how products and styling techniques work on different hair types.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video!! I have wavy hair and so appreciate the tips. I have never used a brush to style for fear of making my hair look worse, but Kate’s hair looks gorgeous. I would love to see more wavy styling videos!!

    Finally, a video about someone whose hair is more like mine! This is the closes I have seen. I have been scouting YT forever, trying to find advice for my in-between wavy hair that looks just like Kate's hair in length and density. I am also dealing with smaller separations and major frizz. I can't wait to try this. Thank you so much for this video and bring on more wavies!

    Yaaaas I love this!! I recently discovered I have waves and am loving your videos. But this makes much more sense for my hair! I love her hairline/crown disappearing😍
    It’s a struggle for me to find out how big the wave-sections should be.
    So thank you! And yes, more please!!🙏🏻❤️

    Thank you so much! My hair looks EXACTLY the same and I've been trying to figure out what it wants to do, single wet strands will form a spiral but most of the time I can only maintain a 2a look. It is so helpful to see what my hair really wants to be doing, in the same color too! Thank you for giving me a visual goal!!!

    Can you add 2C to the title or description? Helps us wavy girls find our hair twins. I feel like there aren't a lot of 2C examples out there (or maybe I just haven't found them yet).

      There really aren't. I've been looking for help for like 2+years for my hair that is exactly like this but blonde. It's just aways so frizzy and stringy or really snarled after I style it. 😢

    Crazy how you can watch a video once or twice, get lost in the world of natural styling on YT (or even within this channel), try a bunch of stuff, and then come back to the same video and be like oh yeahhhh I forgot about that detail! It’s awesome how much helpful info for your sharing and it will continue to help ppl who haven’t even watched yet too. Thanks! 💖

    Loved seeing you use products you have recommended, but on hair different from yours! I have all the products you used, minus the living proof products, as you have used them in prior videos. But you used them differently on her hair then when you demo'd them on your hair. These products never quite worked when I use them as you did in your previous videos. I'm going to try using them how you did in this video and I think it will work for my hair! Based on hair analysis I have low porosity, 2c/3a, course, medium density hair. But my curl stylist says it acts more like fine hair. It needs the moisture, but it doesn't like heavy products. Thank you for doing this video!!!! Her hair is amazing!!

    Great tutorial for us wavy girls Mell - thank you so much! And I will be subscribing to Kate's channel - she had a great personality and I enjoyed watching you two interact. And that stunning hair! I love when you said it looks like there was glitter in her hair - my mom had beautiful red/ginger hair too - and hers had that glittery quality also. Mom's hair tended to have a slightly frizzy look to it though - so she almost always wore it in braids- or would use hot rollers to curl it on special occasions when she left it loose. The curls would fall out quickly (she only used hairspray and no other product) but some curls here and there would keep their shape until she washed her hair. Now I understand that she must have been a wavy/curly girl, and had curled a few pieces in the natural direction of her curls/waves, so it would last longer. I wish I had known before she passed that she had wavy hair - I would have loved helping her find her waves with your techniques :)
    I Loved this video - and would love to see more of you styling a variety of hair types like this video in the future. You are such a great wealth of knowledge on all types - you could help so many people by sharing your knoweldge unique to their hair while demonstrating on a real life example - that has hair that may be very different from yours. Even though you explain the differences that other hair types should know, having a visual on their hair type can make all the difference for some people to be able to do the techiques that they couldn't visualize doing on their own hair - when it was demontrated on a different hair type before.
    Thank you to you, and your sister, and your whole family and support team - for letting us into your lives- and helping people find, embrace and honor their curls and waves :)

    I've curly/wavy hair and I actually like to comb it (in very thin section to not damage it) 3 or 4 days after my wash day, I love the way my curls look once it's combed and by doing this I can stay sometimes more than a week without washing my hair

    Having a similar hair type/density I actually prefer how she had it before. You did great and she looks gorgeous before and after. I just think when you have low density volume over definition is everything 😅

    • @ellena858

      Artnadhd, That’s exactly what I was thinking. The fullness at her crown especially was nicer in the before. Also, this doesn’t seem “easy” when you have to use so many products AND make all these finger curls.

    I love this routine, I don't use root clips I just flip the top section back and forth to get more volume while it dries. Styling to be able to brush it out and put some oil in it later is my absolute favorite. ❤

    I have 2b/2c hair, baby fine and silky soft, and EVERYTHING weighs it down. I struggle to find products light enough to to lift and define. I spend a lot of time looking at techniques for curly hair and trying to adjust them for my waves. Any suggestions on adjusting techniques for waves would be really helpful!
