When you come up the East coast, consider stopping by Serenbe. It’s a neighborhood 30 minutes away from Atlanta based on being as sustainable as possible. The land is 90% protected woodlands, the homes are made of recycled and eco friendly materials, the restaurants are fed by local farms… it’s really a little utopia I think you guys would love.
Don't focus on the horror stories. You're going to have a blast in México. You will find lots of wonderful people like the one that shared food with you. ¡Disfruta tus viajes!
The “funny”/ironic part is that we Mexicans are more terrified crossing into the USA or Canada than you should be crossing into Mexico. You get the white traveller treatment… we get the brown traveller treatment.
i have crossed the US Mexico border at San Ysidro, Otay, Tecate, Mexicali East and West probably 500 times. We have never had a horror story. Your experience is the norm. The horror stories are the 1 in 1000 experiences.
Crossing into Mexico is so chill compared to coming into the U.S., at least from Mexico. Not sure about Canada. Be prepared to wait hours and hours when coming back. As a Mexican, please don't sleep by the highways. Find a well transited place to park. Having said that, Mexican people are some of the kindest people you will meet. Enjoy all the good food and eat any homemade food you can get your hands on. Go to all the taco stands and small trucks you find, you won't regret it!

OMG you had me screaming at the screen - turn around get proof of entry!!! 🤣🤣🤣 And I say pop in surprise content like shoes ANY time!!!! Love ya and your energy.... happy travels and puppy meeting!
Absolutely love your videos! As a San Diegan I've been to Mexico several times, Ensenada, friends have places on the ocean etc. The Tijuana border is definitely not the way to cross. It used to be easy 30 years ago and great shopping but my boyfriend at the time had a friend that had horses that raced at Caliente and he had feed bads in thr back of his car that the federales made him "pay" for crossing the border. He was used to it. Scared the crapp out of me sitting in the car pulled over behind him. Caliente was a blast and we got pictures with his winning horse in the Winners circle....wish I had the picture! Gld your experience has been great so far. Especially great morning breakfast!!!!
So glad your experience in Mexico has been nice so far. Hope you like Ensenada, that's my town. I don't know if you are planning to go to further south of Mexico, but be careful. I'm pretty sure you've heard all the horror stories related to violence (specially on highways), well... those are true, so please be safe, and try not to stay in lonely places. I'm pretty sure you both have done your research, but still now it's time to be on "alert" mode, but still have fun, most of us Mexicans, are very nice people 🤗
Haha yes I grew up in SoCal and go to Mexico with my cousins all the time and I’ve never had to actually stop at the border lol. I’ve always just driven through and never been stopped. But I’m American lol so probably different situation. They might give you trouble going back to the US though it’s usually more of an ordeal than entering Mexico. Enjoy! I’m going to CDMX and Oaxaca in January so this is getting me hyped
Im from Tijuana Mexico. Make sure to stop in Tijuana's Telefonica Gastrobar. In Ensenada go to Valle de Guadalupe (Wineries) and eat at Casa de Dona Estela, go to some breweries in Ensenada. If you head down through Baja toward Cabo, go to La Paz, La Ventana, and San Jose del Cabo. If you ever in Nayarit go to Sayulita and San Pancho. Try to go to Mexico City, Oaxaca city and Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca State.
This looks about like our Mexico trip and border crossing! Have fun! We had better luck getting our cards to work at actual banks than random ATMs. Getting back into the US was way harder than going into Mexico. Probably took us a couple hours and they had a dog inside our truck sniffing it down but they eventually let us back in. The check points were really easy and relaxed on our way down to Todos Santos but on our way back up they were longer with more questions about where we were coming from and why. Little bit intimadating but all went well.
All bases covered with the shoes. I have a fair few shoes but realistically I also only use the 4 pairs of shoes: Birkenstocks (Mayari style silvery ones) so they're fine for being dressy going out shoes or casual shoes. Plastic Birkenstocks for the beach/shower shoes / garden shoes. Sneakers, casual / walking shoes. And boots, for work and hiking.
Nailed the shoe choices! Our vanlife shoe selection is essentially identical. Although we typically also have a set of climbing shoes and ski boots in the winter. Those are practical daily choices, right!?
Be very aware that returning from Mexico into the US in 6 months or so you might be stopped and given a more thorough check by US border agents because they’re kind of paranoid about things. (Even as a lifelong American returning from overseas I sometimes get the 5th degree, probably not anything I did, it might just be a random thing, or they were aware of something that I wasn’t so they went into “SECURE” mode that day.)
Yup, I was going to comment this. I hadn't even actually been to Mexico but one time I was near the border in Texas, coming back from Big Bend National Park, and border patrol stopped me, searched me, and took *everything* out of my car. I was on a month-long road trip so it was quite an intense experience. They kept talking about "things that are legal in other states" because I had Washington plates at the time.
I'm super picky about shoes and am always on the lookout for a durable, quality, and comfortable pair. I'm stashing away these brands and shoe types for when I need to buy replacements for my current shoes. Thanks for sharing this info (and I'm glad the crossing went so well)!
Your car isn't big enough to bring in a lot of contraband, so they'll focus on any larger vehicle that loaded down so MAYBE they can find items they can tax you for.
I found the shoe thing interesting - it's always a consideration to try to keep the number down when packing. But I thought of the "going out" shoes before Leah even said anything. I would say that I don't usually bring a Birks equivalent, but usually include something I could walk into a nice restaurant with or wear with a skirt (but a very compact pair that's still comfortable enough to walk around in before the nice restaurant). Also, I expect crossing the border back from Mexico to US to be more of a pain.
Shoes are important! The older you get, the more you will appreciate that you wore good for you shoes when you were young! Mexico is a beautiful country!
We Mexicans are the most welcoming people ever. We love our culture and we’re always looking forward to show what we have to people from other countries. Also as a Mexican, born and race I know the bad things that can happen. Hope you keep having nice experience, but I’ll keep saying that you guys are very naïve about what you’re doing, but I understand that you guys want to have your Mexican experience. “Guajolote que se sale del corral, termina en mole”
@@LeahandLevi he said "bird that escapes its cage ends in mole (the sauce you eat with chicken)" I'm mexican and I wouldn't feel safe driving in the north of the country, near drug cartel territory (stay away and alert while crossing Sonora, Tamaulipas & Sinaloa) when you get to mexico city it's amazing super safe and nice. People hear love tourists and are super welcoming, you're going to have a great time, just be careful in the north.
Be careful with those open arms to Americans because they don’t share the same sentiments towards your people and they only go to exploit and take advantage. We know this to be true, they ruined Hawaiʻi. They do not respect host culture/lands/people. FACTS
What a wild first campsite ! It’s so weird being the only people. Like a horror story! Lol but be careful and keep your important papers & $ safe. As well as yourselves . People say they have a blast in Mexico but they are usually not in non touristy areas .
My grandpa did a lot of camping at big, empty campgrounds and said funnily enough they completely fill up around several holidays. Otherwise, very much ghost town vibes.
6 weeks ago we went through the Mexicali border going south, we had a military guy get in my camper, he got into a drawer were we had all kinds of bottles of pills and he dumped every one of them out in the drawer. Must of been looking for money. What a jerk. Spent a month mostly stealth camping, badly needed.
I wouldn’t recommend using the wise card, the fees are very high and sneaky. I always use my Schwab investor checking card, they do not charge any foreign transaction fees and they will reimburse all ATM fees even in other countries. If you’re going to use another card, be careful with ATMs in tourist areas in Mexico, they will often deceptively list the ATM fee as $20. Most would assume this is in pesos when it is in fact in USD since the $ sign is used for both Mexican pesos and USD. This happened to me and luckily I was even reimbursed that fee.
this is why its easier to pull money before you cross the border and then exchange it there too, all in the US before crossing over, it makes things a lot easier
Check out puerto Peñasco ! Beautiful beach and it’s full of liveliness I would say it nicer than being in the middle of nowhere. Good places to eat as well ! Enjoy ur trip wish u guys the best and be safe!
I life in Tijuana Mexico if you get pulled over never give any officer money no matter what tell him you will pay the fine at police station. When you get a ticket in Mexico and pay the fine in full they will discount you 50 percent of the fine tickets should not be more then 500 to 1000 pesos even less.
A lot of Canadians move to Mexico when they retire. There’s whole communities. I personally remember seeing two large rvs both towing jeeps caravaning together lol
My preference is to use flip flops (easy to pack) instead of Birkenstocks. Recent backpacking in Indonesia I brought a Teva equivalent, flip flops and a pair of light shoes.
Was the part where your documents were stamped for your TIP? I know its really important to get that for your vehicle. A lot of people don't know to get it.
