As soon as you said you were in Austin I thought "They should meet up with Shelbi and Madison. They have to know Shelbi, they both make videos about sustainability how could they not know each other." Then Shelbi was on my screen, perfect
This was trippy in so many ways for me! Born and raised in Texas, vegan, now Canadian and living in BC, and understanding that culture shock in reverse…following Shelby and Madison for years… loved it! I’m a bit older than the Buccee’s craze, but definitely remember Stuckey’s and other huge truck stops in my day there. The big thicket is much more woodlands like you might love here, but no mountains. In Texas you mostly get one or the other: mountains or trees. There are mountains out west. And yeah, that weather omg! Love from the Prius club!
As a born + raised texan it is hilarious to see the state + all it's quirks from an outside perspective as I've just had to accept it for what it is. What a crazy state, lol.
the self-inflating pads take a while to self-inflate, especially coming out of full compression. during the day, it's important to open the valve and let them air, to avoid moisture buildup. they are meant to be used on their own ish, and you will lose most benefit if they are under the futon. as a side-sleeper myself, i recommend using the mat slightly deflated, which will increase the amount of give or "softness". however the thing i have found most effective for sidesleep is body pillows which are NOT self-camping friendly 😂(i draw the line for impractical self-camp gear at a cast iron!). the pad type you purchased are intended more for self-camping, as opposed to auto-camping. there are thicker (heavier, sometimes cheaper, thinking big agnes or columbia), as well as double-size, pads that may be more comfortable and suitable to your setup. my guess is you will have a better experience without the cotton futon, using the sleeping pads on top of the yoga mats. it's too bad you didn't have the chance to start with a modern authentic futon, but the right sleeping pad will come close.
Totally agree about Texas State Parks, but there are certainly some that are worth visiting: Palo Duro Canyon, Enchanted Rock, and Brazos Bend (alligators!). Also much of the recreation in the parks focuses not on nice hiking but swimming during the summer
If you come through Virginia, stop in Richmond. We have lots of hiking in the middle of the city and outside of it, depending on when you come through you could go white water rafting in the middle of the city, farmers markets, good food options, there's even a treehouse you can book in the middle of the park system.
That "tuque in Texas" line was great, definitely didn't see that coming from a fellow Canadian but guess it is still February. Really glad to see you could connect with some friends, with how long you've been away from home it's moments like that always bring a god amount of joy! Thanks for the insight into Texas, that gas station was really something else, can't imagine one of those back home!!
My husband's Buc-ee's story:. When he was a small child, his family traveled through Texas and he remembers stopping at this amazing store that had all the candy he had ever seen in his life. Forty years later, a Buc-ee's opens in Crossville, TN, and he stopped while driving home from a work trip. He walked in and had a Proustian Moment where his childhood memories of _all the candy_ came flooding back.
I live in New Braunfels and I’m so bummed I didn’t run into y’all considering I was watching the Super Bowl in the next bar over! Hope y’all enjoyed visiting. Wish you guys would of stayed a little longer, there’s so much to see here.
Buc-cees is so big and so busy because Texas is huge, most people drive to get where they need to go and road trips are long, it takes almost 13 hours to get from one side of the state to the other. It makes sense to have a large gas station along a major highway with clean plentiful restrooms and lots of gas pumps. The snacks and stuff are just extra crap people pick up when they’re on a road trip. But turned up 80%.
AHH! I went to my first Bucky's in Florida not too long ago. Sooo overwhelming for this Minnesota girl! Glad to hear you two are doing well and made it back to the US! ❤️
I was shocked to tears, when I noticed Madison standing next to you in Austin. What a wonderful surprise and enchanting moments to see the only two YouTubing couples that I follow together in one vlog. I also own a Prius (since 2012) and recently left San Antonio to return home after a two and a half stay in San Antonio. The boots and Buc-ees must be experienced to believe it. Thx for sharing your experiences. ❤
We have a similar setup in the back of our hybrid ford escape, but we put the inflatable mattresses on top of the futon. Even softer for hips/lower backs!
If u think 7 lanes is big, I hope y’all see the 75 365 interchange in north Dallas. If you do, have gps on and it’ll tell you what lane to be in to go where.
As a Texan, I have never once said Howdy to anyone 😂 Being from New Braunfels, to hear you say it was awesome....I don't think anyone pronounces it correctly haha I'm positive Americans mispronounce cities in Canada all the time!! Buccees get SO much busier during spring break and summer. Avoid them all together during that time because it gets so packed. Great restrooms though.
Not sure if y’all already made it through, but if going through Louisiana via I-10: north of Lafayette in Arnaudville is NuNus art collective and Bayou Tech Brewing/Cajun Saucer Pizza (both fantastic). If you have time in Lafayette for live music, check out Feed & Seed. Also Pack and Paddle is a great local outdoors shop. Kayak rentals or swamp tours on Lake Martin are great as well. And if it’s Saturday, Moncus Park Farmer’s Market is a nice visit.
There is the phrase thats bounced around the states "Everything's bigger in Texas!" I've never been to Texas but so far still seems true. But as an American who has visited a handful of states, oddly yes there is a thing for the gas stations, it could be themed, or massively huge or just have all the awesome necessities, but not all are created equal, definitely ask the locals of that state where the awesome ones are.
Speaking of good state parks… I’ve got two for ya, not sure how close either are to your route but it’s worth throwing them out there. Kinzua Bridge State Park in north-central Pennsylvania is definitely more of a sight to see than a hike, but it’s a heck of a sight - a rail bridge over a large valley destroyed by a tornado. More likely to be on your route, Watkins Glen State Park in the finger lakes of NY does have a lot of beautiful walking trails along gorgeous waterfalls in a gorge. Ask me to pick between visiting WG and Niagara, and I’ll take WG any time. Hope all goes well!
OOOMMMGGGG!!! I literally screamed at my husband "I hope they visit Shelbi and Madison" when I saw that you guys crossed into Texas!!!! I really wish I was down south with you guys Ontario finally decided to participate in winter over this past week!!!
Growing up in Austin, the side of Barton Springs y’all went on is “tops optional”. As kids, we would go over there and there would be topless sunbathers. Always gave us a good giggle! Not sure if it’s still this way.
Nice vlog. I enjoyed the large ass boots! Could be a small walk up coffee stop. Also the scene where you all shopped for the foam was sweet. I’m still amazed you made the Prius work as your home!! ❤ stay safe, hydrated, and alert out there ! Lots of love from blistering hot 🥵 FL! Fun fact it’s 89 degrees today.
Self inflating… you gotta leave it for a while. We have one that is about 10cm thick for car camping and if we leave it for half an hour we only have to add a new pumps from the pump sack. Usually you leave them go inflate and then maybe add one more breath for that type
Texas resident here! If you are wanting great state parks, there are much better ones in North Texas! Mineral Wells State Park and Meridian State Park come to mind! Check them out along with the local restaurants and such in those areas!
What an amazing trip you are on, I love following along. When you get back up to Canada are you going to visit the maritimes at all?? I am, admittedly, pretty biased... but you should!! I grew up in New Brunswick and have been living in Halifax, Nova Scotia for 10 years... could give lots of tips for stuff to check out in these parts. :)
It feels like a different dimension when different TH-cam’rs that you follow meet up. I follow shelbizzle and sustainably vegan too. I’m sure that was an interesting conversation
Another fantastic video!! It was so awesome to see y’all in Austin, where I grew up! Wow, Barton Springs has totally changed- but still beautiful, just …bigger 😂 Can’t wait to see you switch up to a van next week!! Also, so cool to see you all meet up with Immy & Shelbi!! So fun!! 🎉🎉 Much love from NC! PS. I have those mats you’re sleeping on from REI and they rock. 👍 Hope your sleeping gets better!!
If you want something actually scenic in Texas, try Palo Duro Canyon. Second biggest canyon in the US. It's in the panhandle area, so not really near where you were in this vid! Also, some of the beaches are fun!
This was so weird for me to watch. I grew up in New Braunfels and after getting married moved to San Antonio you guys were at the REI that is basically right in front of my old neighborhood. We recently left San Antonio to move abroad(like 2 weeks ago) Hope TX treated you guys well.
I’m thinking that your futon mattress is what is “hard” so maybe switch it out for a memory mattress type thing, you can get pretty thin ones , or you can put one underneath!!
Have you guys been to a Trader Joe's yet?? If you think Buc-ee's is like Disneyland for snacks, just you wait! If you're in the states and not doing a lot of your grocery shopping at TJ's you're missing out, IMHO. I also can't believe you've left Mexico and there was zero paleta content... but I'm glad you're heading back north!
Trying to find myself in the background in the Farmer Market Muller in Austin. My family goes there every weekend. You should have done a meet and great. Hi from Austin

@@LeahandLevi Well we’re not urban and aren’t trying to be. That’s kinda the damn point, we don’t want to be one of y’all rarified city folk. If you’re planning to make your way into NYC, we have the Museum of Sex that Leah might love. There’s also TONS of state parks and protected natural areas upstate, so much so that you could spend a really long time (New York is a huge state). There’s also Long Island, which looks like a dead end, but there’s a bunch of ferries up into New England from the North shore.
What is the street food/food truck scene like in Canada? I’ve noticed you’ve made a few comments since being in Texas and when you were still in Mexico where you’re like “I don’t usually eat from food trucks/street food”
I'm happy that they went to Texas. I will say, if they were impressed by the 7 lanes in San Antonio, they should never go to Houston. But I didnt see if they parked their car in the designated parking lot at the Buc-ee's instead at the pumps. As someone who drives across Texas (from El Paso to Houston) frequently, it really is downer seeing people fill up their vehicles and just leave them at the pump, causing long lines. I don't comment on videos but had to - I was visiting family in San Antonio and made a trip out to Gruene/New Braunfels on superbowl Saturday. Absolutely WILD to basically be in a place that size at the same time 🤯 glad y'all (gotta make sure my Texas shows) got to see some of the ridiculous sights of the most self absorbed state in the union 😂 if you haven't left the state yet, the Fort Worth stockyards and Dallas 6th floor museum (JFK assassination) are... unique
Everything is BIGGER in Texas….says this Texan!!😊 We do drive a lot of trucks - not ride a lot of horses! lol You can have all 4 seasons in one week in Texas! 😂
I was NOT expecting a Shelbizleee, Sustainably Vegan crossover. My little subscriber mind is blown!
I screeched when I saw these powerhouses show up on my screen
