Macedonia is a Greek province, located in Northern Greece. It has always been Greek and the way to distinguish it is that Macedonians spoke Greek, worshiped Greek gods and considered themselves to be greek.
Everything else is just a desperate attempt to forge history and claim it due to Slavic people’s lack of own history and identity.

This is a very good presentation of Thessaloniki's street food.
The pie is indeed Spanakopita, the Gyros cost 7€ because it was a portion, while a wrap costs up to 3€.
The desert "trigona Panoramatos" translates as 'triangles from Panorama', Panorama being a suburb with a panoramic view of the city.

when I'm drunk in Thessaloniki, and it's not winter time to go for a patsa (meat soup) which helps with hangover, I buy 4:06 coulouri from local bakeries. Bakeries get coulouri right off the oven at around 5 , 5:30 in the morning. So imagine a hot coulouri on my left hand, and a cold feta cheese on my right. I love this combination. Tastes of Thessaloniki

  • @nikofloros
    @nikofloros 5 ปีที่แล้ว +258

I'm so glad you enjoyed the food in my city! I love to see Thessaloniki get some tourist love! Especially for our food scene which is wonderful! To answer some of your questions and give some extra information:
The spinach pie you were eating which you called a spanakopita (btw it's pronounced spanaKOpita and definitely not spanakoPIta haha) is of course also just called that in Greek (written σπανακόπιτα). That category of "pies" are colectively just called Pitas (just like the bread which, I know, is confusing to foreigners). So a spanakopita is just a spanaki(spinach) pita; if it had just cheese it would be a tiropita or a tiri (cheese) pita and so on.
Koulouri bread that you compared to a Montreal bagel (which I totally agree is a great comparison) actually goes bad to ancient times in one form or another, but it's modern form and popularity do indeed come from when Greeks living in Anatolia (wester and norther Turkey) were forced to leave and migrate to Greece. It was a terrible time, but they did bring with them wonderful food and music that just different enough from other Greeks to create amazing blends of food and culture. Also, we don't ever butter them (butter isn't a big thing in Greece since we have olive oil). That kind of coulouri we usually just eat dry like that while we're drinking coffee in the morning. Especially when their still warm... It's the best! There is another version of the koulouri made a little differently with cheese inside of it which is also delicious.
Also, not that you have any reason to know this, but the "phyllo" dough that you're pronouncing as FA-ee-low dough is actually pronounce FEE-low :)
Anyway, cheers and I hope you had a wonderful trip!

If you do not eat after five in the afternoon, absolutely nothing, and at the main meal getting up from the table a little hungry, you will lose 15 kg
Once on a Saturday, I ate both in the afternoon and at parties with friends. Self-restraint and everything in proportion.
In the afternoon if you are very hungry take some dry bread or biscuit.
Not many drinks. Lots of salad with food. You will see the result in a few months.
Monitor your weight twice a week.
      And you'll be okay.

Some tips from a greek person:
The reason you did not get a wrap is because you asked for "gyro" which in greek refers to just the meat part (gyro means rotation or "around" in greek, therefore any meat cooked this way be it pork/chicken etc is called gyro) . If you want to get the wrap, then you will have to ask for a "pita gyro" which specifies that you are asking for the gyro wrap :)
Also, if you want to get the classic filling (pita bread, pork, tzatziki, potatoes, tomato, onion) you can order a "pita gyro ap ola"--> literally means pita gyro with everything.

Glad you liked my birthplace! Thessaloniki has the biggest university of the country (Aristotle) with like 75k students, that's why cheap streed food thrives. Most foods are inspired from Asia Minor which was Greek for thousands of years and today is modern Turkey, population forced to move out of there because of the massacares (my grandparents too) and opened restaurants and shops here, this is why the city has an eastern-like orientation towards most foods. Sadly if you are vegan you don't have many choices, probably you would go for a Falafel or a pita with potatoes, although last years more vegan restaurants are opening here and shows some promise.

    0. Eat Peinirli as for breakfast. You can find them in almost all bakeries
    1. Tsinari , during midday to try local alcohol called tsipouro with seafood meze
    2. Try and buy the sweets called Revani (or Revani Veroias), also Galaktompoureko, the sweet bread called Tsoureki from Terkenlis and again the Trigono, but this time from the store called Elenidis.
    3. A trip until Peraia Thessalonikis if the weather is good to sit next to the sea and eat fresh seafood (be aware that their English might not be good there)
    4. Late during nightime in Bit Bazaar for cheap wine and later for a souvlaki or panseta in the Mama Teresa
    5. You can also refer in your video on the cheap meals you can get as a student in the street called Melenikou close to the Universities, as Thessaloniki is a student town
    6. Last but not least eat Crepe in Nauarinou street from Valentino. A salty Crepe with everything you might choose from the buffet over there. You will love it

Sorry man, but Giannis is one of the best bougatsa shops in the down town area for students that study here from other places in Greece, but if you ask the locals nobody eats from here. The best bougatsa shops are in the western side of the town e. g Bougatsa Panos and Georgos. You can even see the highest score they have amongst other shops in Thessaloniki if you do a Google search.

By the way the spanakopitta you ate is the village kind. (horiatiki) The pastry is homemade by aome giagia or granny and now it is sold in the supermarkets. They also make cheese pies in the same way with horiatiko filo. (village pastry). They all fall under the pie category which is quite extensive in greece and we love our pies, all sorts of them, village ones, twisted ones, crispy filo ones, round ones, with all our greek cheeses, feta, graviera, mizithra etc. or pies without filo, you name it we make it.

Pita is a Greek word for pie although I think we have very different definitions of what a pie is 😂 basically it's layers of fyllo dough with different kinds of fillings. The way we name any kind of pie is by combining the main ingredient with the word pie. Hence dishes like spanakopita (spinach pie), teeropita (cheese pie) etc.

But yeah, they should try some more "hardcore" gyradiko (-diko is like the -sserie ending in French, means a place that sells the first part of the word) next time. Its sfoliata pastry dipped in syrup and filled with vanilla cream. Quite delicious.

Oh wow the food there in Greece looks fantastic, gyro are my most favourite wrap/sandwich also. It’s funny because here in Australia, we call those souvlaki. That dessert at the end had me drooling 🤤. Love you guys, you two are so humble. 🥰

    • @Flyingjos
      @Flyingjos 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

"Souvlaki" it is called wrongly in Athens.
"Souvlaki" is actually a small kebab.
"Gyros" on the other hand is the pork or chicken meat slices.
"Pita gyros" is the sandwich with the meat slices.
"Pita souvlaki" is the sandwich with the small kebab.
But in Athens they are lazy with words so instead of "pita gyros" they say "souvlaki"... And when they order the small kebab alone without the sandwich they say "kalamaki" instead of "souvlaki"...
Hilariously, "kalamaki" is the small piece of wood penetrating the meat

So glad you enjoyed our food!
    So, some more info.
The first thing you ate, bougatsa, is commonly eatten with a glass of cocoa milk. Also, it's not phyllo. That dough is called bougatsa. But the filling can be cream, cheese, spinach, even minced meat.
The last thing you ate, trigona panoramatos. Trigono means triangle. Panoramatos means from Panorama which is an area in Thessaloniki. And the base is phyllo which is drowned in syrop, that's why it's sticky.
Katsamaka for me is one of the best places. You should have tried kokoretsi. It's amazing!
