Honestly you should never watch sequels to horror movies, they're almost always and I mean almost _always_ shit. At the very least they lose what made the original so loved, even if they sometimes have something going for them that makes them interesting and great in their own right. Think Aliens vs the original Alien. Barely even similar beyond having the same setting and as the series went on it only got less and less horror-like and more garbage.

The fact that they shot Saw in only 18 days with 1.2M budget, and yet they got 103M on box office and 9 sequels makes it one of the most profitable franchises ever! Also, it was the very first film directed by the well known horror director James Wan and Leigh Whannell (Adam in the movie) wrote the script. They were 2 recent film school graduates that spent all his savings on this project by that time. Great horror duo with an amazing plot twist! I highly recommend watching the original short film they made to get the bugdet and production and understand the pasion they put into it. While still making sense. That's the most important part that I agree almost always lands. And they manage to create something of a coherent narrative over eight movies.

Something a lot of people don't realize is they did this movie on a shooting budget of $700k. They filmed it in less than three weeks, with some guys like Danny Glover or Emerson (Zep) only available for a couple of days. They only built the one set (the main room), and they ended up having to use rehearsal footage in the final film because they had so little to work with. I think the crazy editing style is part of that, just trying to get the absolute maximum effect and intensity they could out of what little they had. I think they did a pretty good job considering those limitations! I remember seeing this when it first came out and it just felt very raw and fresh, though unfortunately the franchise would go on to become a lot worse over time (imo).
Yes, the reason why still photographs are used so often in the film is because they couldn't go back to do exterior shots, so some of those photos were taken while scouting locations.
This story has to be conflating the pilot short film and the full film. There are several sets they use, even if they only *built* the main room, they have the doll factory, the police station, the hotel, the hospital, the parking garage, whatever room the girl is in, the other victim rooms, and the doctors house.

This film is a favourite of mine. I went to the cinema with a date to go and see Leminy Snickets series of unfortunate events and it was sold out. We were told Saw about about to start, and we went into the movie totally blind, having not seen or heard anything about the movie at all apart from a billboard I’d seen the day before saying “dare you see Saw”. Probably the only time I saw a movie at the cinema with no knowledge of it. Both of us came out the cinema texting everyone we knew telling them to go and see the movie as it was brilliant.
I remember watching this when it came out at the Cinemas in New Zealand. That ending had everyone off their seats in disbelief. Still the GOAT movie from the franchise.
It’s definitely one of the better ones and has a vibe with the House of Haunted Hill. It has the creepiest trap (the pit) and helps establish Jigsaw as a horror icon with Tobin Bell’s excellent performance.
It makes sense to not want to watch all 10 movies but I highly recommend watching the next 2, they for do form a pretty cohesive and satisfying trilogy, and 3 has a pretty proper wrap up despite the series continuing
I would recommend SAW 2 as well, mainly because Tobin Bell is still the best part of the franchise after all these years, and he doesn't get a lot of screen time in this one.
I appreciate you for stepping out of your comfort zone to watch this, and I agree with you about The Boys being different. Gore was never their main focus and in Saw it just is that, thank you for the reaction Natalie!
You gotta watch them all, they get better! All 4 criteria you rate movies on increases as you progress. This was their first film done as a college project with a low budget which kinda explains the funky way it was edited. But given how much people loved the first film, the proceeding films and storylines get so much better 🔥
Thankyou for reacting to this. I remembered what a classic it was. Even though I "saw" each one in the theatre, and got the DVD after, I tend to forget what the films are like.
Just remember 1 thru 7 are one big story while 8 and 9 were attempting a reboot. While X was between 1 and 2 just in vase you HOPEFULLY change your mind
Movies 2 through 4 and then 5 through 7 are both mini arcs in the broad series story. Plus, Saw 5 has, as I understand it, a Hollywood first ever event.
I love that you liked it! Now you need to watch the second film! It's the refinement of this one, with a much better story and better performances 😍😍😍 And it's a perfect sequel
Man alive Nat sometimes you're a real hard nut to crack - thruout your screaming your head off - obviously scared - then you pretty much tear it apart for what it is - a horror movie pure and simple. This is the only one you need to see agreed - the rest are ridiculous (I have up after IV) The final twist is truly a jaw-dropper - saw this w/a friend and we were like WTF!?!?! It was wild.
You know, Natalie I love you, but sometimes, you get a little cynic while you're watching something, especially "old" movies (like Terminator) The editing here was used to hide the low budget. Obvioulsly you dont have to love everything, but i think you could try to understand each film a little more and their context.
if i remember correctly, in the chase scene at the end, they were not actually driving because they didn't have a high enough budget to make such an elaborate scene. Hence, they created the effect using the quick edits
Hey that end music is so iconic now for the twist endings of all the saw movies. I never thought Saw was cheesy it is meant for you to think you figured out who the guy is so it sets you up for the twist ending
I would recommend watching at least the next two, if nothing else because with the big reveal out of the way, the sequels delve a lot more into Jigsaw himself. Jigsaw is a compelling villain because he firmly believes he's the hero and the third movie in particular cements that.
I think you might prefer the story of 2. I also think you should do Saw X, the most recent one - it's set between 1 and 2 and is genuinely really good.
Saw had 2 different cuts to the ending depending on what theater you went to. This is the one I got when I went out of town to see the movie at a different theater. When I went back to work the following week and talked about it with my friends, they all looked at me like I was crazy because I was the only one that saw a different version.
Saw 2 and 3 are worth it too. Very good story. The ones that come after are kinda OK too but not as exceptional as the first 3. But they add to the story.
Oh my god! Sitting to watch a new Nat video is like chilling with your best friend, always a good time. Awesome reaction hahaha And yeah, watching SAW out of the context it was in when it came out 20 years ago is definitely a different vibe. The film was made on a shoestring budget and managed to revitalize a whole genre of horror - the infamous torture *orn. I wholeheartedly reccomend you give SAW 2 a go. It is better than the first and ties things really neatly while still managing to be very light on the gore. Of course the whole franchise is a rabbit whole an from 5 onward it becomes increasingly confusing and twisty for not a lot of return. There are some great ones like SAW X but it's likely gonna lose you way before you get there just because of how gross they become after a while =P
One of the clues also comes from the other trial is the sedative/pain killer the other victim had received. It was used to make him appear dead and Jon in the main trial also appears dead. Implication is he used similar concoction. Further they mention the drugs used were heavy pain killers which cancer patients are often given to help with end of life comfort. Just a couple small clues that point to a twist but done well enough that audience likely won't figure it out but on re-watch you realize there was bread crumbs pointing to the identity. Also a bit of Chekhov's gun principle at work. They focused too much on Jon in bed and gave a backstory in the scare resource of time a movie has. It means it likely has to be relevant to narrative in someway. Though watching you don't notice it because they immediately give the red herring of the orderly. For what this movie is, an incredibly low budget film shot in less than a month by film school grads, Saw is really good. I think it could have been even better if they had a bit more resources for better actors and some more experience in editing/cinematography. Curious how Wan would change the first film with his experience as a director 20 years later. One of the two students, James Wan, has gone on to be a staple in the horror movie scene of the 21st Century. He has since directed most of the most popular horror franchises with Insidious, and the Conjuring series with spin offs. Crazy enough he also directed one of the Fast & Furious movies and both Aquaman movies. Wan was the 16th highest grossing director of all-time as of 2021 with his films having grossed $3.7 billion in total. (Though part of that is because of volume.) With the majority of his movies being made for under $10 million he tends to be a studio goldmine in the horror genre. He has moved more into producing in that genre recently.
imo this movie should’ve been a trilogy. the first 3 really do give you a perfect complete storyline and by the fourth is when i think it becomes mostly about the gore
This was like the perfect storm of circumstances, propping this film up to be the huge success it ended up being. The budget and the production was low enough to make you believe the resolution was going to be just as lackluster as you imagined when you saw Zep in the beginning, the filmmaker's "plant", and you kept believing it until the end where the true resolution slapped you across the face for not only underestimating the film but also for feeling justified in doing so.
I'm a bit confident that you can do Saw 2! (And although Saw 3 began to be so gorey, I would still try to recommend you to go up until here as the franchise was originally suppose to end here.)
The major lesson I took from this film is that things are never as they seem. The film showed that truth in many different ways but the most significant way was that the chronology was never as it seemed. John Kramer (Saw), had already been doing the "Saw" killings for quite awhile before the events of this film. Even the events of the film were in a strange order. All of that should become apparent throughout the course of the film; EG The cop getting his throat cut to him suddenly having a healed scar and no longer being a Cop, etc.. The sequels take this nonlinear approach to time as well, and just like in this film, you never really know when a scene is occurring or has occurred. This film itself could have been the last in the series of Prequel/sequels and you wouldn't know until you have seen them all.
Y’all need to stop saying it was filmed in one room. The had a whole warehouse that they utilized - basement, main floor and attic/upper. It was one studio set, not one room.
Welcome to the Saw series! Come for the Gore, stay for the Lore!! I feel that if you can separate the first film as an ambitious project by 2 filmmakers trying to redefine horror and the rest as something rammed in with a rubber mallet; It is this soap opera of "What else can we do? How can we expand the story that started with two guys chained in a bathroom" It's not the most graceful, sometimes it's forced in (Again Rubber mallet) but it's entertaining. It's just "This is what we have, what more can we add to this increasingly unstable building that's foundation is soggy playing cards!"
Fun fact: This was made by 2 recent film school graduates that could only afford 1 room to record in. The movie became very popular if you consider the circumstance.

The Saw franchise has some of the most insane and crazy twists. It's famous for them.
The little edits in Nat’s videos are the best. 😂
I remember watching this when it came out at the Cinemas in New Zealand.
That ending had everyone off their seats in disbelief.
Still the GOAT movie from the franchise.
Saw 2 is sooooooooo good, and a HUGE step up in everything. I definitely recommend at least giving the sequel a chance.
It’s definitely one of the better ones and has a vibe with the House of Haunted Hill. It has the creepiest trap (the pit) and helps establish Jigsaw as a horror icon with Tobin Bell’s excellent performance.
the end when jigsaw closed the door saying : game over . is still my favorite moment of all time being in the cinema ever. super iconic.
"Oh is someone already dead on the floor?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
"Pigs! It was part of his plan!" Natalie the way I CACKLED
Fun fact: The music was composed by Charlie Clouser, a member of Nine Inch Nails.
24:37 Best movie soundtrack ever, in my opinion of course. Love this soundtrack so much. Truly amazing job the orchestra did.
Also the guy playing Afam helped write this is also a director and made a great sci-fi thriller called UPGRADE in 2019 I think. Awesome movie
I appreciate you for stepping out of your comfort zone to watch this, and I agree with you about The Boys being different. Gore was never their main focus and in Saw it just is that, thank you for the reaction Natalie!
This movie is iconic. Imo the first one is a masterpiece.
PLEAAAASE CONTINUE THIS SERIES!!! The twists and surprisingly the STORY is actually amazing!🖤🖤🖤🖤🔥🔥🔥🔥
All the SAW movies are really great fun comedies, love them so much.
I mean, most people have scissors in their house. Usually not to use as a weapon.
13:40 "So it's just the guy that works at the hospital, there's no twist"
Oh you sweet innocent child
My god... the first Saw is such a GREAT movie. The writing. The twist. I still get chills at the end when he wakes up. This is so good
I love this series. They're all like this. The traps, the structure, the twists, the suspense, the reasons, and yes they're all pretty grisly.
You know, Natalie
I love you, but sometimes, you get a little cynic while you're watching something, especially "old" movies (like Terminator) The editing here was used to hide the low budget. Obvioulsly you dont have to love everything, but i think you could try to understand each film a little more and their context.
10:58 laughed my ass off at Natalie's startled reaction to the puppet 😂
Excellent scary movie to react to! Saw is a brilliant piece of work.
And the ending still is one of the best twist endings to a horror movie, ever.
if i remember correctly, in the chase scene at the end, they were not actually driving because they didn't have a high enough budget to make such an elaborate scene. Hence, they created the effect using the quick edits
She is laughing way too much for a psycho thriller movie😂😂😂😂
Натали, ты суперпрекрасна, и поэтому я жду твои реакции на все следующие части.❤️🔥
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE WATCH - THE MIST. Great Thriller that you'll love and We'll love watching you watch!
You have to watch 2, 3 and 10. Worth it. That might not be all of the important films, but it will complete the story.
Saw 2 is a must watch. ❤
Now that you know you it’s not as bad as you thought you should definitely consider continuing the series. This cracked me up i need more 😂
"Not a great movie"
*WHAT THE HELL DO YOU KNOW*
So ungrateful
Please watch them all
Hey that end music is so iconic now for the twist endings of all the saw movies.
You should see the second movie because it closely relates to this one.
I appreciate you and thank you for making content.
Saw 2 and 3 are worth it too. Very good story.
The ones that come after are kinda OK too but not as exceptional as the first 3. But they add to the story.
Oh my god! Sitting to watch a new Nat video is like chilling with your best friend, always a good time. Awesome reaction hahaha
And yeah, watching SAW out of the context it was in when it came out 20 years ago is definitely a different vibe.
There are some great ones like SAW X but it's likely gonna lose you way before you get there just because of how gross they become after a while =P
this movie marked my childhood, it's amazing, I even have a DVD copy
Uhhh! So excited for this series of movies!! I do hope you change your mind and check at least the next 3 haha ✨
imo this movie should’ve been a trilogy. the first 3 really do give you a perfect complete storyline and by the fourth is when i think it becomes mostly about the gore
Melodrama is this series, i really recommend at least watching 2 and x which takes place between 1 and 2.
Watch the rest of the SAW movies 😁
The Hello Zepp theme is by far one of the greatest horror themes up there with Exorcist's Tubular Bells and Halloween.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS you have to keep watching lol officially my favorite scary series, its worth it!
the ending of this movie still leaves me with my mouth open. Still imo the best twist in cinema
Saw 1-3 are the true movies of this series and a good stopping point before they get out of hand.
It was one studio set, not one room.
the first 4 saw movies are actually really good, John Kramer is probably one of the best written horror Antagonist oat
Excellent choice I love this movie the series have some very good movies and c’mon got to watch a few more
Welcome to the Saw series! Come for the Gore, stay for the Lore!!
I feel that if you can separate the first film as an ambitious project by 2 filmmakers trying to redefine horror and the rest as something rammed in with a rubber mallet; It is this soap opera of "What else can we do? How can we expand the story that started with two guys chained in a bathroom"
It's not the most graceful, sometimes it's forced in (Again Rubber mallet) but it's entertaining.
It's just "This is what we have, what more can we add to this increasingly unstable building that's foundation is soggy playing cards!"
never in my wildest dreams would i ever have thought you would react to SAW lets goooo
