Actually, that device used copies the card imprint. When I worked in retail, we had to do this for certain transactions. I want to say it was $300 and over, if I remember correctly. You're still swiping the card behind the register, but you're required to take the imprint to prove that you physically had the card, plus checked ID, etc. That was in like 2008-2009 or something like that. Now the chips and such have probably eliminated it. But this is a very old movie, too.
the DEVICE he USED was not caveman technologie.. infact it actually IS using caveman technology of simply copying the DATA printed on a credit card onto a piece of paper using a charcoal layer. , just like cavemen . This device was usually used in remote areas where u have no connection to digital payment systems ..like on small island for example. The DEVICE creates a form of BINDING and LEGAL receipt that the SELLER then takes to his bank next chance he gets and they put it in the electronic payment system. Way before teh internet was available thru a phone line for every mobil phone or device ..
AND you ARE both right .. suprisingly . The movie feels rushed and a lot thing s are UNexplained.. that feeling u have there is true . Why ? Because teh original footage length of this movie was 3 hrs 40 minutes. which tehy cut down to a mere 90 minutes for the theatrical version . a TON of dialoge was cut out . theres a video with some of the missing scenes here on youtube .. but only like 40 minutes. the other 2 magical hours might be lost forever according to Hughes himself .. who is also dead now for almost 20 years. so we cant AKS him .. time flies by ..
