We actually moved to NW Arkansas for our son who has autism. The public school system here- they actually care about the special needs kiddos. We came from Seattle two years ago- my son was being abused by staff, locked in closets and just denied his right to a good free public education 🤷‍♀️- I cannot homeschool a child that is literally smarter than me. Since moving here- he's back in a class, learning and thriving. I am so impressed with the teachers here. ❤.

Locking in closets? Wow, former foster mom of special needs, that says volumes about what was not being done in the school system, that’s a law suit sadly

@@China-Clay yes, the principal dragged my son down the hall, put him in the janitors closet shut and locked the door and turned off the lights. He was physically and emotionally traumatized. He has complex ptsd from school. For six years I battled them- it took four years to find a law firm willing to help him. We did sue for "non education of a special ed student". We found out about how good the schools in Northwest Arkansas were and started planning on moving here. I filed the lawsuit against the school district and two weeks later we got an opportunity here in Arkansas and jumped on it. We moved five weeks after filing and I litigated it from here. For six years of no education, he walked away with about $11,000 towards tutoring. That's about eight months of tutoring. The judge told us we should just settle this lawsuit and we need to hire a secondary law firm to file for a civil rights case due to all the trauma and abuse inflicted upon him. It's bad. Really bad. All I can say about locking him in closets is it's a really good thing I was here in Arkansas when we found out, otherwise I'd probably be in prison.

I worked briefly in a public school. They referred to kids with IEP’s as “getting special treatment.” Teachers can really be super horrible people.

@user-cr1pm3rt6i as the parent of an autistic child, who also moved out of state to ensure our child thrived, I'm soooo incredibly sorry for what happened to your son! There's a huge difference between schools that just aren't equipped and schools/teachers that abuse children!!! I definitely pray you continue to have the financial and representation needs to fight this all the way! I feel like I recently saw a teacher being arrested for the exact same thing I believe in the state of Florida, but I'm not positive. I started working with special needs children long before I had one myself, and I can't imagine the cruelty someone would have to have in their heart to ever do such horrendous things to these remarkable kiddos! I truly hope things change for your son!

As Christian parents, we go into each school year with a lot of prayer. We have 4 kids ranging from 11th grade to 5th grade and we take the "every kid, every year" approach. God has led us to homeschool, public school and charter school in different seasons. God has always provided.

The School Conversation!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥THANK YOU! what a refreshing conversation! We are a Christian family and decided to send our child to public school. No one around us has done the same, for different reasons and at times I can feel like I have "failed" my child. But the reality is that my husband (who is a pastor) is very picky with Theology and refuses to send our child to Christian school (he states most of his school trauma comes from his Christian school lol). I pray every day as I drop my daughter off at school that she (and us as a family) can be a light and a blessing to the school community. We are also very involved in our church community and we teach Christian principles at home, as the truth of the Universe, not just "a religion". Loving your podcast!

I find you answers so honest and so familiar. My parents were devout Lutherans but they would have answered many of the faith based questions exactly as you did. I love that your faith leaves room for others to decide what religious practices are right for them rather than forcing them to conform to your ideas. My parents believed that Christian values were learned at home and in church, not in school. We all went to public school where we learned about how others practiced their own faiths and customs.

Thanks so much for answering the public school vs christian school debacle with such an amazing answer. I'm a christian single mom with 4 kids with disabilities and if it wasn't for the public school(s) they are attending I would not have been able to keep my head above water. It is absolutely very personal and different for every family. I respect those that homeschool and those that swear by having their kids go to a christian school, I won't loose any sleep over it, but what I do have a problem with is the condemning towards each other. God leads different people into different paths and I pray for my kids' school and their teachers every day they go there. I have met amazing other parents (non christians) and the staff is insanely good. How else are we to shine a light in the darkness if we don't go out there? I think it is to each their own and to respect that, especially amongst christians...

Yes. there is no “Best Practice” for schooling your kids except that as a parent you need to be involved in your kid’s education overseeing what and how they are learning being willing to help, reinforce, and/or supplement their learning as needed throughout their entire childhood.

We have friends in every form of schooling you can imagine. Some believe their kids need to be in public school because as Christians, we are called to be light to the darkness. Others keep their kids out of public school, especially in the formative elementary years, because they don't believe its right to put kids into the position of being that light while they're still being taught what it even means to follow Christ and are trying to understand and grasp what it is they actually believe. We homeschool simply because I wasn't ready to send my oldest to kindergarten when it was time (as silly as I know that sounds). We've just continued on homeschooling as the years have passed and find that we enjoy the added family time and flexibility it provides to our schedule. We're now in a hybrid situation where my kids are home most days, but are at our local Christian school a few days a month.

Their Son is in college or was and their daughter has been able to go to school in Europe since she was young that would be amazing! I have been praying so hard to see if our daughter is supposed to go to this awesome Christian School, but transportation has been an issue for us and falls on us which is 30 miles one way. Plus, we work FT or to home school through the Hybrid System. Especially next year she is supposed to go to the Middle School next year and it is not that great.
