A little tip from Germany: If you saw off branches on trees that are to be preserved, then first make a short cut in the underside of the branch. Then saw through flush from above. This prevents the branch from tearing out under its weight when sawing from above and causing such a large wound on the tree that fungi, bacteria and harmful insects can severely damage the tree. Ideally, you should also saw as close to the trunk as possible. Great videos, well explained. The clear pronunciation helps me a lot with my school English to understand you! Thanks. Beautiful time!

Something you probably already know, but thought I might mention it - When you're trimming a limb like that, if you make a small cut from the bottom upwards (a quarter of the diameter or so) placed a couple inches from the trunk, then do the main cut from the top down farther out, when the branch drops loose, it won't tear the bark and try to twist in nearly as bad. Then you can come back if you want to and trim off the stub that you left, since it doesn't have any weight and won't try to fall on your face the way the branch will. :)

For the health of the trees you want to keep, cut the branches at the collar by the trunk. If you leave a stump the tree cannot repair (compartmentalize) itself by growing cambium over the cut, the stump will die and rot, which will extend to the inside of the tree trunk, i.e. the tree will begin to rot from the inside out.

They have some great face shields out that would protect Rebecca so she could keep her eyes open and see the limbs falling towards her better, they protect and don't fog up. When I was a kid ( born in 1940s ) we had a dump on our farm of 28 acres because we had no garbage pick up then . It was not very pleasing to the eye , but we didn't know any thing wrong with it then .
My granny and grandpa’s farm had a dump ditch. All the farms had one. What else were you going to do with all the junk? They used everything until it was worn out, but there were still those last bits. Theirs even had a trashed Model A body in it.
It sucks that you have to clean this mess but I'm really looking forward to seeing how deep that trash goes down. The two of you are working so hard to improve your beautiful farm ❤️
we started a fire in the garbage pit we had like that. It burned for days. Could cut down all of the trees, then stack the limbs on top of the dump to burn. get one of those hot fires burning with dry stuff first that is so hot, even green limbs will burn. Then, when all finished, we had a local guy come with his hi-lift. (like a bulldozer but with a bucket) come in, dig hole. Just a ramp that got deeper and deeper. then just scrape the ground and pushed all the remaining bottles and trash and metal in the pit and burry it 6 feet deep and cover it all up again. It cleaned it up nice. we had household garbage, glass, old clothes and shoes, just a lot of junk that didn't burn. it is deep enough we will never run into it or see it again. it doesn't affect are farming. in fact it is in the corner of a hay field.
Evan you might think about renting a mini ex if you can operate that or skid steer with tracks and use your grapple to dig that junk out of the hole. If you ruin a tractor tire in that junk pile, rent would be cheaper than a tractor tire.
Looks to me it was a huge outhouse that collapsed. Years ago every single farm stead had these holes to bury their garbage.This was the only way to get rid of it because there were no landfills for the farmers. Only the towns and cities had garbage pickup and that garbage was piled above ground on land leased by the city. Back in the 50's my dad and his buddies use to go to these piles to shoot rats for fun climbing around these garbage dumps.
I would take the root rake part of your grapple (lower section) to loosen that soil up , then you can dig that dirt out & move it much easier. Good luck, can't wait to see the transformation!

An small excavator with a thumb would be quickest and best for that job. Not only for extracting the rubbish but loading out the dumpster. Failing which a backhoe!
Will be interesting to see what's in that old time-capsule trash pit. Who knows what may be in there. Keep an eye out for old beer cans and glass containers. There maybe some rare collectables in there somewhere.
5 gallons of diesel fuel and one gallon of gasoline would clean that out pretty good. Then you could just haul in a few buckets of dirt from the other side of the property and it would be fine. (Don't tell the "Department of Making You Sad".) All those limbs you trimmed would make great Terra Preta to absorb any bad chemicals in the trash pile that burned.

You may already have this pit all cleaned up by now but if not, for whatever it’s worth, If you can possibly rend a mini excavator with a thumb that would be a better deal. I would hate to see you run something through the radiator of your tractor. Renting an excavator may not be in your budget but if at all possible that is what I would do. However you choose to get it done is of course up to you. Just thought I would suggest it in case you haven’t thought of it. I’m with you though! There is no telling how far that junk pile goes back. Be careful!!
Hi Evan! I'd like to suggest getting a T-Post puller. They have a slot in them that allows for a T-Post and a chain link, we picked up one of them at a local MFA store. We use to do it like you and Rebekah did in the past and my wife watched a video with the Traditional Homestead folks using the puller, picked it up last spring/summer and it works great. On my property along a fence i found pieces of wood trusses that were totally rotted. So after i had a roll off delivered then I could clean that up. While doing so i found a hacksaw which if i were to buy it would be expensive. Old cable used for internet or whatever it was. Chain link fencing i left for now since can't get close because of oak trees growing. Previous owner must have tried to burn up an old gas grill and gave up. Worst thing i had happened was getting old barb wire hung up in my zero turn mower, which if that person was there i would have liked to wrap it around their necks. I hate lazy people that leave junk laying everywhere. After 4 roll offs i have thrown about every kind of junk one could think of!
Evan, I found that an excavator is the ticket for jobs like that. Even a small one with a hydraulic thumb is a game changer. Once you have one you will wonder how you lived without it! I see so many jobs that you are doing that are just begging for one.
Love how you use sweat equity to get the jobs done around your farm... seems like some of your commentors could learn a thing or two... after all I dont think those are money trees on that fenceline.
We ALWAYS use the LockJawz spring-wire fence clips for the bottom of the fence, unless it needs a lot of downwards holding power. So much easier to install and remove.

Also, why would you want to contaminate your land in such a way? Someone is going to buy that land some day or a family member will inherit it. Common sense and good land stewardship should prevail.

I really don't want to film myself breaking the law. I would have hundreds of people reporting me. I can legally burn wood and limbs from the property. But not plastic, carpet, tires, etc. So that's why we are going to clean it out.

Put a straw bale socked in fuel oil in the pit before the brush an way it go. Then push the dirt over what ever is left not like you will be building anything there. Every farm do it. Why consentrat all the crap in huge piles in huge land fill that water filtrate through these 60 ft High Barry trash piles and they have to drill down and insert stainless steel pipes to release the methane gas produced by the trash or would be a volatile Mountain what gets me is they have an oil or gas bill someplace and they have to pay huge prices to have it all dug out 12 to 15 ft deep and hauled to a landfill site and dump it this is concentrating huge contamination in the one spot where is if it was left alone nature would take its own course and filter through the ground where the oil spill was when I work in the big huge logging camps we used to dig pits in the ground and back to heavy logging equipment over the pit and don't the oils the Pittsburgh burned on a regular basis from all the trash remote portable garages. He'll Cities Burn all the trash in huge incinerators so I don't know what lawyer you would be breaking he'll big ocean liners burn thick sludgy crude oil out at sea that powers their engines. Plus I don't see much more than just rotting Building Materials in there. So I dont think any one else see anything other then same.. lite it up an be done
I think your best bet is to shove it all into a pile and throw a match on it. Whatever is left after the fire, pick through with the grapple and toss in a demo-can. Probably not the most environmentally friendly way to do it but the most cost effective and time saving way. Most of that stuff will end up in a land fill anyway which would be just as bad as burning it in the long term.

You already know there is carpet, old wood quite probably shingles tar paper, maybe even worse. Everything leaching into the ground and right to your drinking water.. I do agree with the mini excavator or tracked skld steer,one tore up tractor tire is going to be more than a weekend rental.. Your grapple would work on a skidsteer.

I would dig a trench to get air underneath, apply a liberal amount of gasoline and drop a match
