That was really fun Seth. Thanks for always sounding cheerful and happy to be alive and playing Magic. When I heard your first video, I was like "wtf is this for so happy?". And now I'm like "what do I have to do with my life so I can sound that happy???". You rock!!!
18:38 Seth: come on, big draw, Solemnity for the win *Draws Solemnity* Seth: (Joyous maniacal laughter) Dude your reactions kill me every time. Thank you and the other people you guys collaborate with for the good content, you guys have easily become my favorite source of Magic entertainment!
I'm gonna (re)watch all the episodes of against the odds until the end of the confinement and post a comment on each :). I'm a big fan. "We can't keep a one lander" you were wise at that time haha. I saw it at that time and still love some solemnity locks.
Sweet deck - but it seems a little awkward with a bunch of 2 - drop cumulative upkeep creatures that you are playing before you play your 3 - drop solemnity
He can't use coco properly if he doesn't do that unless he puts gazillion 3drops and put even more 1 mana ramp creatures but I do agree it does feel weird.
he is not intentind to curve out but rather play underpriced threats that punch way above their weight. So him needing to get a solemnity down before is not that relevant when he can gat a couple of them down for a fraction of their real worth.
Also I knew about vexing Sphinx bug because it was in the last modern cube. It used to make you unable to pay. I guess their fixing that was making you not need to pay.
3:18 I'm confused as to why he didn't play Cover of Winter. Would have pretty much won him the game even if he only ever got one counter on it before solemnity
i saw this deck a while ago and without watching the games i ordered 4 cover of winters to go with my eon hubs... i just watched the deck and it had nothing to do with cover of winter. but i loved it, other than wasting the 5th and 6th Zur searches for more copies of the win over, say, ANY OTHER ENCHANTMENT(detention sphere's great against tokens)
Since you are playing Zur why not have at least 1 copy of enchantment removal in the deck, like detention sphere? Or at least the SB. I know you are running a "combo" but I feel like sometimes you just want removal. 1 copy of a card you can fetch seems like very low cost for a lot of upside.
Yes!! This tech is necessary. In fact, it would be even better because you could keep things with counters already on them, without paying the cumulative upkeep
Not just Delver players, also some decks like Ad Nauseam and other ones with Suspend cards, (like Burn, I guess?) as well as 8-rack and probably something else I'm forgetting.
It's not that the creature dies because you can't put on a counter while solemnity is on the battlefield. it's that you still have to pay for the counters already on it, even if you can't put a counter on it. IE when sheltering agent had a counter on it and then you played solemnity, you still have to put a +1/+1 counter on a creature each turn. Solemnity just stops it from getting bigger.
I think Solemnity kept us from putting a counter on the creature to pay for the age counter though (since Sheltering Ancient's cumulative upkeep is put a +1/+1 counter on a creature).
Nope, the cost of the upkeep is to put counters on the creature, so if you can't pay the cost (put a counter on a creature) you have to sac it. For example if we just had a Sheltering Ancient out (no Solemnity) and our opponent just had a Tatterkite (can't have counters placed on it), at our upkeep we put an age counter on Ancient and then pay the cost for each age counter. The cost is to put a +1/+1 counter on an opponent's creature, but Tatterkite doesn't allow that so we can't actually pay the cost and have to sac Ancient. Solemnity essentially makes every creature into a Tatterkite, it makes it so Ancient cannot see any creature that it can put counters on, so we have no choice but to sac it.
It always bugged me that the devoted-vizier functions as it does, it seems like you shouldn't be able to activate the ability because you can't pay the cost.
I feel this deck should be running 1 to 2 Idyllic Tutors to ensure that you can more reliably get a solemnity on the board by turn 4 at the latest. You dont want to be drawing dead due to no solemnity and drawing countless low costed cumulative upkeep creatures. Best part is if you already got the Solemnity and top a tutor, go the the Unlife to lock out the opponent while you have your fun.
ErroneousClique idyllic tutor is way too expensive, not worth taking turn 3 off especially against aggressive decks where sheltering ancient is pretty decent.
Yes Zur is in there but he is a 4--drop which needs to attack - meaning no enchantment tutor until turn 5 at the earliest without ramp. I would run 3 Idyllic Tutors and maybe 1 Zur as he cant even double as a backup wincon due to 1 power (and dies to path and push with revolt on). That way you are more consistently getting combo pieces out on board by turn 4 latest. I still dont see the downside to this... As far as Idyllic being to slow, it is 3 CMC. It is much faster than Zur and cheaper as well. And compared to our wealth of 2 and 3 CMC creatures that we want solemnity out for them to be effective and stay in play with their upkeep costs, all our enchantments are slow. IMO Idyllic is the lesser of two evils (when compared to Zur which is cute but much slower and suffers from summoning sickness the turn it is played).
ErroneousClique zur doesn't just turor enchantments he puts them on the battlefield with a repeatable trigger and is a relevant 4 toughness body. What would you cut for 3 idyllic tutors?
ErroneousClique zur doesn't just turor enchantments he puts them on the battlefield with a repeatable trigger and is a relevant 4 toughness body. What would you cut for 3 idyllic tutors?
Rips the hard lock off the top of his deck against 8-rack, seems like a good matchup. Burn drew 2 burn spells in a row, most brutal loss of all time...
You should have an angelic destiny, d sphere and potentially a steel of the godhead to fetch with Zur. Good fun with you as always Olive! Oluve you man, in a totally platonic, not gay way. Happy holidays to you and yours bro.
to be honest i don't really think it's the deck per say, it's just the combo is so good in the meta. No one runs enchantment removal and the time comes down as soon as turn 4. so unless the opponent can win on turn 2, as long as you have a unlife on turn 3 solemnity on turn 4 it's really hard to be the combo. Course not saying combo is unbeatable because you can just sometimes just not draw it and be SOL. But all in all the chances of drawing solemnity or getting something to get one or the other is actually pretty high and fairly consistant
Where do you find these decks? This is not the first time I've come up with a brew and been in the middle of the testing/tweaking phase when an against the odds deck comes out that's insanely similar. My version was BW with phyrexian arena and the overwhelming splendor/curse of death's hold lock but the wincon being the same solemnity/unlife/cumulative upkeep creatures package. May be coincidence but this is the 4th time, I think someone who submits decks to you plays on xmage.
Scott Poole I mean solemnity, when it was spoiled, had a lot of potential, it's not a coincidence that a seasoned magic player like Seth come up with combo decks with it. It all about knowing which cards are out there.
True but the chances of solemnity being out as long as it has and 2 people coming up with builds so similar within 4 days of each other is odd. Plus this the 4th against the odds decks that's been almost identical to one I'm working on. Could just be the fact that both me and Seth are in love with brewing but meh. Not mad about it or anything, in fact would be pretty cool if decks I came up with ended up on a channel I watch all the time. Just so crazy to me its happened as many times as it has. In fact shortly after I saw his UW bogles video I got so excited because I had always wanted a good shell to play Arcanum Wings in and that seemed perfect. I built it and went out playtesting then 3 days later out comes hidden treasures featuring none other then Arcanum Wings. Getting kinda crazy.
I'd say Phyrexian Unlife would be the most obvious but I do see what you're saying. I only find it odd that once again within a few days of coming up with a brew it ended up here. At 1st I took it on coincidence but at this point I'm convinced someone who plays xmage as much as me are liking them and sending them his way.
It's possible, only thing that has me questioning is the frequency at which something I come up with ends up here. At the end of the day it's pretty neat one way or the other. Either myself and someone I am a fan of think similarly enough that we end up building the same decks all the time or brews I come up with are interesting enough that they end up on a big channel. I'm just glad one of my favorite and the best performing brew I've come up with hasn't spread giving me a nice secret weapon to bring to my LGS one day.
Tested it, it sucks balls, opp has counter you're screwed, opp discards solemnity you're screwed. Tipical glass cannon, it may steal a streak of wins in the right meta, but other than that I don't think it will see any play.
Seth calls that board state vs Ponza the greatest board state ever in modern... Has he forgotten Budget Magic: Tutelage Turbo Fog vs GW Hatebears (Match 2)?
Dixon Tiru so a cumulative upkeep creature would only sack it self if u don't have soleminity and if u chose not to pay? Thanks for the help btw I assumed it worked like that but u can never be sure.
Cumulative upkeep requires you to put an age counter on the permanent at the beginning of your upkeep, and then pay the cost listed on the card for each age counter on it. (example: Cumulative upkeep {2}: pay {2} for each age counter on it or sacrifice it. First turn after you play it pay {2}, second turn after you play it pay {4} etc.) With solemnity in play age counters cannot be placed on the card so the card would essential force you to pay zero times the cost because the number of age counters would always be zero
Seth, I love your content, but you seriously have to stop shoving so many colors into your decks. There's no reason not to build the deck as a UW control shell, but you play a 4-color pile, for a very dubious amount of value. If the core of your deck was the Solemnity, you don't need to force in black and green. If you don't play so many colors, you can ease on the manabase and not include all those shocklands, which will also increase your survivability.
oren barzilai I agree with that but having Zur is really good. Like he is extra copies of both. The green isn’t really needed though, it just helps get the combo out on turn 3 if you draw well, but you should win there anyways
oren barzilai he's already played a boring version with the same lock, he's spicing things up by showcasing the synergy of solemnity with cumulative upkeep creatures, if you want something boring go watch that other video
Naw, I see it. Green for ramp because otherwise the combo is too slow, then you might as well as well splash Black for Zur (he does just about everything you need in this deck). It's not like he got stuck on colors very often.
I order from Card Kingdom all the time, specifically because they're always ridiculously fast with their shipping and I always get them in a couple days so I don't know what in the world you're talking about...
I voted for beard tribal but glad this made it for some good content. Anyways always good to just watch Seth play. Thanks for the vids and helping me learn the game. Lolz I sound like a nerd

Good old Seth. Scooping to unknown bugs that weren’t his fault and he didn’t even know about. What a guy!
That was really fun Seth. Thanks for always sounding cheerful and happy to be alive and playing Magic. When I heard your first video, I was like "wtf is this for so happy?". And now I'm like "what do I have to do with my life so I can sound that happy???". You rock!!!
"what do I have to do with my life so I can sound that happy???"
Play Magic for a living.
Seth being a great sport and conceding in the last game
Seth is the best
Well, that escalated quickly
18:38
Seth: come on, big draw, Solemnity for the win
*Draws Solemnity*
Seth: (Joyous maniacal laughter)
Dude your reactions kill me every time. Thank you and the other people you guys collaborate with for the good content, you guys have easily become my favorite source of Magic entertainment!
Thanks!
I call it his "troll laugh."
*your*.
And yes, it's very good.
I’m waiting for Seth to refer to Snapcasters as “The snappiest of caster mages.”
Soon.
"Through the breach... Aaaaaaaand the Aeonest of Tornest of Emrakuls"
The Griselest of Brands.
My lord that cumulative upkeep bug is bonkers
I'm gonna (re)watch all the episodes of against the odds until the end of the confinement and post a comment on each :). I'm a big fan.
"We can't keep a one lander" you were wise at that time haha.
I saw it at that time and still love some solemnity locks.

With 1cmc mana dorks, it isn't a problem that often
The problem is that your creatures are still not that much bigger than, say, Tarmogoyf and die to Push all the same.
That last punt was brutal in game 5 and that was Kiki chord in match 2
Greatest board in Modern?
What about your Maze's End deck?
Elijah Kleinman someone should really assemble a list of Seth's greatest boards
This is why I watch you, because you're a very respectable magic player.
Lmao "Soulcrushers"
25:47 you can put the Gorger trigger above the Jotun Grunt trigger and sacrifice Grunt to Gorger's ability, that way you keep the two fliers.
Cumulative Upkeep: Add a bug to MTGO
Insert Tom the cat meme at 30:11 for that yell xD
Really cool idea for a deck, fun to watch. I like when the AtO decks have a wide number of ways to work.
10:50 scooping two turns before saheeli can start cat combo? Solemnity would've shut the upticking of saheeli down and won you the game there
2 years later but solemnity doesn't affect planeswalkers
This would be a deck I'd want to see more of on stream, to see how it does against more archetypes.
5:10 Someone has been watching some jontron lately. That's a lot of damage.
Its not that much damage
THATS A LOT OF DAMAGE
I want to see seth knifing a bucket. Or saw a boat
most entertaining mtg youtuber
Also I knew about vexing Sphinx bug because it was in the last modern cube. It used to make you unable to pay. I guess their fixing that was making you not need to pay.
You didn't bring in the thoughtseizes to blow up the combo deck in the 2nd match?
Arthur Kimes he was going for the "my combo wins if we both get online" plan
3:18 I'm confused as to why he didn't play Cover of Winter. Would have pretty much won him the game even if he only ever got one counter on it before solemnity
i saw this deck a while ago and without watching the games i ordered 4 cover of winters to go with my eon hubs... i just watched the deck and it had nothing to do with cover of winter. but i loved it, other than wasting the 5th and 6th Zur searches for more copies of the win over, say, ANY OTHER ENCHANTMENT(detention sphere's great against tokens)
32:22 I see only 1 counter on that elf...
Since you are playing Zur why not have at least 1 copy of enchantment removal in the deck, like detention sphere? Or at least the SB. I know you are running a "combo" but I feel like sometimes you just want removal. 1 copy of a card you can fetch seems like very low cost for a lot of upside.
Eon Hub would work almost like 4 more copies of Solemnity for cumulative upkeep purposes.
Yes!! This tech is necessary.
In fact, it would be even better because you could keep things with counters already on them, without paying the cumulative upkeep
Also, troll Delver players
Not just Delver players, also some decks like Ad Nauseam and other ones with Suspend cards, (like Burn, I guess?) as well as 8-rack and probably something else I'm forgetting.
solemnity lock is love, solemnity lock is life...
So the Vexing Sphinx bug has me wondering how many objectively terrible cards are bugged and broken on MODO.
So much Evil Laughter from Seth in this video, hahaha
This was really fun! Thanks!
Thank you for making it snow, Seth, 😉.
It's not that the creature dies because you can't put on a counter while solemnity is on the battlefield. it's that you still have to pay for the counters already on it, even if you can't put a counter on it. Ah. hadn't considered that part.
That 8 rack match was hilarious 😂😂
I'm glad you saw reason and changed the name to SolEmnity.
I wonder if it was Seth or Adriano that messed this up.
I think it's funny that even without solemnity, shrieking affliction can't kill a player through phyrexian unlife because losing life isn't damage.
But the rack is damage not loss of life.
I know, shrieking affliction is not and that's what this comment was about.
Jötun is pronounced "Yō-toon". The Jötun are the giants of Norse legend.
8 Rack does have an out to Phyrexian + Solemnity, except it's Ensnaring Bridge... Not the best out but it would have won them both games
Also Liliana ultimate can split them up.
Yeah, but it would really take time.
How would Ensnaring Bridge have won them the game? By hoping that Seth milled out first?
BrewBrewBrewTheDeck i don't think it would have won any games because of hierarch
Noble hierarch says seth still wins
It always bugged me that the devoted-vizier functions as it does, it seems like you shouldn't be able to activate the ability because you can't pay the cost.
33:49 Playing against Ponza- If we don't get land locked...
Riggggghhhhht
I know nobody probably wants to hear this, but death's shadow would work really well in this deck.

Hilarious deck. Would like to see a more consistency. It seems like solemnity or bust most the time
Yes! More Solemnity action! Thanks for making my shitty night better Seth, we love you.
You’re the best
omg Seth how did you not play around the Sulfur Elemental ;)
Hey Seth, great Deck dough why no always watching as a Fun-Of for the late game?
My fav TH-camr enjoying this spicy, janky brew makes my day 🤣🤣🤣!!!!!
Wait why does solemnity not just enable the devoted druid combo?
Rips the hard lock off the top of his deck against 8-rack, seems like a good matchup. Burn drew 2 burn spells in a row, most brutal loss of all time...
Why no eon hub? You did do it in a previous against the odd but still
“Modo just has a solemnity built into it”
Aww, I was kinda hoping for an UR control deck with Heidar and other rimewind mages.
You should have an angelic destiny, d sphere and potentially a steel of the godhead to fetch with Zur. Good fun with you as always Olive! Oluve you man, in a totally platonic, not gay way.
Happy holidays to you and yours bro.
I feel like 25 is to creature light for coco in this deck, otherwise pretty sweet
I was making a deck similar to this actually. Thanks
Nice deck! I missed these janky decks!!
Saheeli Cat combo is really stupid. It’s not so much annoying that the combo exists, but that both pieces were printed in the exact same
*set
*block

The vexing Sphinx doesn’t make you discard the turn you play it cuz there is no cumulative upkeep counters?
This is what the Eon Hub deck should've been.
30:11 dude did you murder your cat here or what what the fuck
Nice bugs.
Good guy Seth dropping from the event because of the bug :)
Finally my wish has come true
By the power of Modo bugs!
There is good news. Our combo is good
Bugged cards: The Magic Deck
Tested it, it sucks balls, opp has counter you're screwed, opp discards solemnity you're screwed. Tipical glass cannon, it may steal a streak of wins in the right meta, but other than that I don't think it will see any play.
The title and the thumbnail are different spellings
Solemnity+Liquimetal Coating=no counters on their planeswalker 😈
The bugs made the deck special IMO lol
Seth calls that board state vs Ponza the greatest board state ever in modern... Has he forgotten Budget Magic: Tutelage Turbo Fog vs GW Hatebears (Match 2)?
I built something like this long ago
Honestly, I really like the thumbnail art.
I just think it looks really cool.
Edit: Omg, the orc is dabbing...
You probably shouldnt fetch twice if you are hoping to draw a land
I was hoping for Dark Depths, but hey it's still a good video.
Coolboy 7961 banned in modern :(
YAY HE PICKED IT
Anyone care to explain what's going on I think I know but ice age rules?
Vacated Drake - solemnity stop counters and Cumulative Upkeeps use Age Counters
Dixon Tiru so a cumulative upkeep creature would only sack it self if u don't have soleminity and if u chose not to pay? Thanks for the help btw I assumed it worked like that but u can never be sure.
Cumulative upkeep requires you to put an age counter on the permanent at the beginning of your upkeep, and then pay the cost listed on the card for each age counter on it. Nathan Barrett sweet thanks for the help.
Come on two broken combos in the same deck?? Idk how you stay calm that second match.
Mtgo bugs shine upon the of cumulative upkeep. But crap of me of color change.
Seth, I love you but when you get upset that a burn deck draws burn it’s hard to feel sorry for you
Anyone else triggered every time seth says solemnity. The n is silent! It's solemity!
the n is only silent when it ends in mn, solemnity is the correct pronunciation.
SETH it's pronounced "Yo-toon" Grunt
Seth, I love your content, but you seriously have to stop shoving so many colors into your decks. There's no reason not to build the deck as a UW control shell, but you play a 4-color pile, for a very dubious amount of value. oren barzilai they don't call it against the odds for nothing
It's a Christmas Deck!
oren barzilai he's already played a boring version with the same lock, he's spicing things up by showcasing the synergy of solemnity with cumulative upkeep creatures, if you want something boring go watch that other video
Naw, I see it. Green for ramp because otherwise the combo is too slow, then you might as well as well splash Black for Zur (he does just about everything you need in this deck). It's not like he got stuck on colors very often.
Don't buy from card kingdom they'll make you wait a month for your cards and then send them to the wrong address.
SALT MUCH SALT
I order from Card Kingdom all the time, specifically because they're always ridiculously fast with their shipping and I always get them in a couple days so I don't know what in the world you're talking about...
Magic online is hot garbage.
I voted for beard tribal but glad this made it for some good content. Anyways always good to just watch Seth play. Thanks for the vids and helping me learn the game. Lolz I sound like a nerd
