How To: Replace The Waterpump on an Evinrude / Johnson Outboard (Complete)

- This is a complete step by step instructional video on the removal of the lower unit, removal of the waterpump and impeller and reinstallation. Each step is shown and final test running of the engine with a strong pee stream.
What about the o ring between the housing s.s. cap and the plastic housing?Oh and one point..that gasket goes under the new plate to the lower unit..not on top where the housing o ring will contact. Please see "detailed evinrude water pump replacement ".
Just a trick for all who have a hard time with the rubber impeller going into the housing. Try using a tiewrap and pull it together , put it in the housing a cut the tiewrap. Hope it help.
The gasket goes on the other side of the base plate.
slide the new impela onto the shaft then on to the key way then slide the housing onto the shaft, lube the impella tips with dawn dish soap then turn the shaft counter clockwise while applying down force to the housing , it will all pull together

I would like to know where this extra o ring goes pls and i was surprised when you put the gasket on the metal plate and not on the motor block under the metal plate!!!
After you have the gasket and the plate down use the o ring to hold the key on the shaft. Then slide the impeller all the way down lining up the key and the impeller .. with the impeller all the way down slide the housing over the impeller while turning the shaft you’ll see the impeller suck into the housing then line up all the bolt holes with the housing , the plate and the gasket… don’t worry about the orientation of the veins on the impeller… as soon as you crank the motor it will self correct to the correct position

Ever have a problem getting the low unit back on the motor? Something isn’t lining up with about 5” left to go.... I’m exhausted :(
When you unscrew the shift rod linkage, did you have to take out the screw on the side and the small bolt on the top to make the lower drop out? I'm having an issue with my lower dropping like it's still connected to something. Thanks in advance
That paper gasket goes on first and then the plate
You did it wrong gasket goes under the backing plate not on top
Putting lower unit in a vise would be a big help.
At the beginning of the video you mentioned an explanation on the box for the extra o ring that came with the kit. It would have been helpful if you told us what that explanation was. My kit did not have an explanation or any instructions and came with an extra oring not shown in the parts manual. Watching your video it looks like it goes on the top of the water pump plate between the plate and the water pump impeller. That didn't seem right because it looks like the motion of the impeller would grind up the oring.?? I thought you would never realize the gasket goes below the plate and not on top of it. Good catch.

Everyone else drinks "after" the job is complete.
After 28 agonizing minutes you will find this out and have you second guessing your work.

I would suggest a piston ring compressor to squeeze the impeller to get into the housing.
I like that transom. Can you use a hose clamp to collapse the vains like a ring compressor?

wow this is a complete wrong way to do it. from the gasket on the wrong side to the o-ring.... one things for certain the engines are built proof and you proved they can work even when you installed it wrong.

Where does the o-ring go? I put it under the drive shaft splines and now have water spraying out the bottom half. Thanks
Horrible video . The gasket goes UNDER the plate not over it . And the impeller gets installed before putting on the cover . You apply pressure on the cover and rotate the shaft clock wise . It goes right into place .
