I would probably fix it up keeping it as original as possible. My dad bought a 2 door, 3 speed stick car, Thunderbird engine like this, with 21,000 miles from a little old lady that had not driven it in years at the time in 1968. How I wish we had never driven it much after that.

First and foremost, get that Y block to turn over, then see if you can get it to fire. Then see if the tranny is still good. After you know the drive train is still operable, replace that bad cross member. Then start picking away at all the other mechanicals. Don't pay any attention to all the negative comments from the arm chair appraisers! That's a very solid old Town Sedan, and deserves the attention to get her back on the road. Don't worry about making it perfect, just get her safe to drive and you won't believe the smiles per mile your going to get the first time you take her out! 😁

How much would you set for budget? Just the cross member is quite a chore to change. Say 1000$ if you have to pay someone.
Getting it to run takes someone experienced Carb is the biggest factor. Like a previous comment said pull plugs pour in some marvel mystery oil or the likes. Rock it back and forth with a socket and brake bar not forcing it. Do it a little each day until it turns over completely.
If that never happens. Park it and enjoy just looking at it like a pretty flower bush.

The few rust areas can be fixed. The front cross member has to be replaced. Parts for these cars are available through vendors or swap meets. Don't crank it with the fuel line connected to the gas tank, which by now is filled with varnish. Gravity feed it some good gas. Drain the oil, with all the crap long settled in the bottom. Spray some WD 40 on the spark plugs and pull them out. Then spray WD or light oil (3 in 1) down into the cylinders. Since the starter doesn't want to kick over, tap it with a hammer light to medium with someone turning the key or jumping the terminals on the starter relay under the hood. If it's stuck, turn the fan while you tighten the belt by leaning on it with the other hand. With a wee bit -o-luck and starter spray, you may wake the beast from it's slumber. LOL!

My advice to you is anything can be done, I'm 73 years old and I've built a few cars. one was a 56 Fairlane club coupe a little rougher than yours but rough. From experience, I can tell you that you are looking at hundreds if not thousands of hrs. to rebuild this. But I did mine with little training and little experience. Took way more money than I would have liked. Also had to farm out work that I didn't have equipment for like spray painting the car. Also and most important I had friends who would help. Don't let rust fool you. A little spot to the eye can be a huge spot once you start grinding. There is only one sure fire way to get rid of rust and that's to cut it out. Once you've cut out the rust you have to be a sheep medallist or farm out the work or order replacement parts. Money, money money. Sounds like I'm painting you a pretty bleak outlook but to be real. A long expensive job, it might be, but if you want the car bad enough you can do it. I did.

15 years ago I pulled a 1956 Country Sedan aka 4 door wagon out of a field. Its in about the same shape as your Town sedan. I parked it in the back yard and it sat until last year. With covid I needed to get out of the house. So I had some of the same problems you had with the starting, after some parts and some taping with the hammer she started. So now I had the same front cross member rot and the floors looked about same. Now it has new floors and cross member, aka Ebay. I bought the car for $1500. and now have about 2500 in it. I live in So Calif and parts are pretty easy to get. On the cross member you will have it cut out and a new one welded in. I bought a used one it was cut with the frame right behind where it was welded by the factory. This made it very easy for the new to welded in. I plan on keeping it as a driver Good Luck with yours

Its a more door. Not actually that desirable. To make it dependable and a joy to drive. Swap the driveline, Buy a newer running ford with a V8 and overdrive automatic. Get a new radiator. Update the suspension. maybe cut the frame at the firewall and do a front frame clip that way you get power steering and better front disk brakes. Get all the mechanical work done and tested before you start on the body repair. That vehicle isnt a investment. Its a money pit. You can never recoup the money you will spend and will get zero dollars for your labor.

@@muchgooderish You see folks who have a restored nicer than new vaulable vehicle. and are afraid to drive it. dont even want anyone to touch it. That's Ok however the original drivetrain and front suspension steering and brakes even if restored to new original condition in todays modern traffic they are at best marginal. Money spent on the original stock componets is simply throwing good money after bad. We have a 55 2 dr ford ranch wagon. It runs and has a very good six cyl. However its slated to receive a 1962 390 T bird engine with a 74 pickup flywheel clutch bell and top loader 4 speed. I am junking a 67 Q code T bird and since my stock front crossmember is rotten. I will cut the frame at the firewall and weld on that T birds front frame section. It also will get the T birds equal lock rear end to replace the wagons dana 44 that has 456 gears and tiny drum brakes. A friend owns a 56 4 door he installed a 302 and overdrive automatic. You almost had it started. It will definetly run. Make sure there is at least a gallon of gas in tank. I would disconnect fuel line from carburator, crank engine for 3-4 seconds and see if any gas comes out of the line at carb. Repeat several times. If no gas, replace fuel pump. Crank engine until gas comes out of line at carb. Then reconnect the line, crank some more to get gas into carb, pump the carb to get some gas into the engine, repeat several times. Make sure choke is closed. It should start.

That’s what I did on my 55. I used 2 pieces of 3”x3”x1/4” angle iron to fab my own. I actually sandwiched the original crossmember inside of my new steel. I shaped one piece to fit on the entire backside and go around the lower control arm bolt (the rectangle shaped washer-type piece to be specific), and I actually welded those rectangle pieces into my new steel. That rear piece of angle iron also crossed under the old crossmember with its’ other 3” flange Then I did the same on the front side of the crossmember except that I put the other 3” flange of my angle iron on the underside of the crossmember (below the rear angle iron’s bottom flange). Anyway, the ends of the angle iron welded to the frame and I welded the upper edges to the original crossmember. Doing it the way I did turned out super strong, kept the control arm pivot bolts in the exact same spot, and didn’t mess with the steadyrest engine mount or the radiator support mount. It worked out fantastic and didn’t cost me anything but time! You’ll come up with something good I’m sure!

Not many people would take a pink, white, and rust fairlane. 2 other videos on it so far, and a 3rd dropping shortly.
      Thanks for watching.

I think you should really get rid of the rust fill the rust holes properly (they could get larger if not tended to) and repaint the parts of the car that need it (the back) and keep the good parts of the car (the roof and pink parts of the front fenders) original. And please KEEP THE INTERIOR ORIGINAL!!! do NOT touch it, usually those seats would be chewed up by mice and other rodents and the leftovers would deteriorate over the almost 70 years that car has been on this Earth. Finding the original seats, door panels, and carpeting to be in that good of condition is almost unheard of and finally restore it mechanically because if done, that car can last another 70+ years on this Earth... thank you for reading and I hope this gives you and helpful information on what you want to do with this car.

Ha. It would end up looking like a pope-mobile with a big bubble top on it, or it would end up as a double decker.
Nice suggestion though. Hopefully you are subscribed and will watch all the updates released and still to come. We appreciate the comment.

You're going to get in way over your head on this project. You do not have the skills or knowledge to tackle a restoration project of this magnitude. That is a lady's car - the two-tone paint color and that fancy brocade interior say it is. It is a four-door sedan car too - which isn't high on the list of collectible vehicles. To do it right and bring it back to its original condition - you will spend more than it is worth in the end. Family history and stories do not add to the value - especially with this 1956 Ford Fairlane. Some people think they have a real treasure and diamond in the rough with old cars - trust me - this is neither.

We know what it is and what it isnt worth. We dont believe we have a high monetary vehicle, but what we do have is faith and vision. If we all shared the same thoughts and ideas, the world would still be flat.
