❤ As life always changes, even seasoned minimalists can get stumped. I usually donate instead of sell, as I love being a blessing to someone else, and frankly the hassle of selling comes with challenges I don’t want to deal with. But I just sold my engagement ring for a variety of reasons. I’m glad I did, but it makes me realize that value on everything is decreasing, even beautifully crafted antiques. Enjoy what you have while it’s beautiful and useful to you, then say goodbye even when it’s hard. Don’t rely on others to give you big $ or even want your things in the future. Travel light in this world, using your life for your heavenly legacy.
So true! I think disposable income is so low right now that people are saving their money for things like groceries and gas. I agree with you that overall I like to donate instead of sell - but for larger items I will put in the effort. Have a great day! ❤️
I have a space that I have dedicated to preparedness for emergency situations. I have a large family and I know emergencies will bring them back home. The space is my container. I’m done when that space is full and I rotate groceries. :)
Lol...I'm sitting in a chair with 3 seat cushions on it to make it soft enough as I watch this video. I love my winged chairs and use them everyday but I bought them to reaploster, 25yrs later it's still not done. So expensive. Sometimes I wonder why I keep them they are so embarrassing and I never want anyone to sit in them. Can't decided if I should let them go and buy new or take the plunge and get it them done but then that would mean at least a year deciding on fabric. Decision "fear" is a real thing. Thanks for the encouragement. I love your gentle spirit.
Oh I’ve been there!!! I would suggest checking out fb marketplace, thrift stores or habitat for humanity restore- many times you can find great furniture for such a small price! Then you could easily declutter the ones you have now that are becoming a burden/embarrassment for you! ❤️
Guilty on several counts of the reason I have stored in my life. Now attacking the problem ferociously because I don’t want to burden my children with clearing out my clutter. Started about eighteen months ago, I do something everyday, sometimes a goodly amount of the day. (I’m slow). All the easy stuff is gone but I know it will probably take me another year and a half to get rid of the “better” things I don’t want to drop off at Goodwill etc. My mantra “Declutter before decrepitude, m’dear” Took a screenshot of your list to print out and reference, wise words, indeed! Thank you ❤
I can speak on the stocking of cans and other foods in case of an emergency or not being able to get certain things. This started mostly for me in 2020 when I refused to bow to the mask mania and ended up purchasing groceries online. What I learned is that if you collect the food you ALSO need to use it on rotation. This worked mostly well until cans came damaged and I got free replacements and didn't toss the damaged cans "just in case...." If you can store the cans, make sure you periodically use the ones in front (those purchased first or expiring first) and replace only what you've used. That will prevent those dates from coming too close for comfort and then having to toss it all. Now we work off a smaller system, mainly with stored cans that will be used in the next year on regular rotation along with regular grocery shopping. Another thing that made us toss a lot of old things was having types of foods that we haven't eaten in over a year (we went carnivore, so the carby things sat stored until expired.)
Good morning Angela and everyone 👋 This is an excellent video you made Angela! It’s got me thinking and ready to evaluate some things. I store seasonal things like Christmas decorations that I use and like/love. I store in a cabinet my larger small appliances like Instant Pot and stand Mixer. I do use them occasionally. I store some clothes that I rotate. Thanks to you, I’m more mindful about what’s being stored, its usefulness and value to me. So thanks again 😊 I do have to keep myself in check so I don’t backslide and allow things to start coming in and claiming valuable space. Looking for to next Tuesday’s video! 👏
wonderful! Perfect to read this every day. Thank you to this very dear Arrow Hill Cottage brilliant lady! I will work harder giving away more each week, and trying to remove paper! You are a genius!
October has been a month of decluttering very old papers, sorting and decluttering some photos, getting rid of DVD's and sorting through jewelry. Your point about delaying decisions is so true and all of these things represented delayed decisions in the past.
I had too much paper clutter with personal information and realized it is going to be with me if i am not taking a decision on it. Then finally i paid some dollar to recycle it safely. That mad me happy and less luggage to carry. 🙏
This really made me reassess my clutter and see what is the hang up of getting rid of it. I have been decluttering my home on an ongoing bases. I find I still have too much stuff but struggle with decluttering it. I think it is dealing with the type of storage it is and now you have identified it, this may help. Thank you. 😂
I got rid of high school stuff! Including my formal dress from my graduation. So freeing getting rid of reminders of bad times! Also, freeing to get rid of supposed sentimental family heirlooms! We've never had pianos though. I love having only 2 very small boxes and 1 small bag of Christmas decorations.
I think it's okay to store any of these types of items but just assess what's reasonable and what's excessive. For example, I limit my sentimental items to 1 storage bin. Storing extra food isn't a bad idea unless it just sits there past the recommended date.
I saved quite a few things anticipating a move. (Things to put things in and some packing materials for fragile items). So now I’m moving soon and it’s about to all get very real. 😂😂 Once I move tho, I’ll prob finally get rid of a lot of it (or get rid of some of it before I go if I don’t need it for packing). Oomph. Need to sell the old scooter also. Lol. Prob will also put an ad up on Marketplace for a yard sale and freebies before I go. Right now just separating personal storage from rental biz storage (and other peoples’ stuff stored in basement).
If people would only try to give their unused things and see how releasing it is to own less and only what you trully need. It's like you get rid of your mental fog.I also changed my synthetic clothes with natural fibers, and got rid of the plastic bowl containers.I would love to see a video about that
What about the special stuff that beings to children? Was told hang on to certain things until they are adults and can decide on their own if they still want it..
@AudreySchumann-h1b like baby blankets made by family. Pictures. I have asked now at younger age. But was told they may change their mind if older. Idk.
I would say use your judgement on that. Just know that you run the risk of saving too much, taking up valuable space in your home…and eventually it may all be tossed anyway. Probably a good idea is to have a bin per child and have that be the boundary of the amount to keep. Talk with your children about each item that goes in and if it gets full, let them make some decisions about other things to eliminate. ❤️
I got rid of my entire library (PhD) because the degree itself made the same point. Now the degree seems to take up too much room. I'm proud of it but a piece of art would look nicer.
Yes. When you start to tie your identity to an object and feel like a ‘piece of yourself’ would be lost if you were to declutter that particular item. Very dangerous! ❤️
Why do YOU store?

Right! Always have to be thinking about expirations when it comes to food! Great point! ❤️

Great work! You will really appreciate your efforts when the weather turns colder and you are spending more time indoors! ❤️

Great idea! That is one case where it was worth the expense! ❤️
You are so smart!!! All these clutter issues, yikes.....
Sometimes just recognizing the reason why we keep things can be powerful! ❤️
And there are the holiday decorations, it’s endless
Yes. So much seasonal stuff! ❤️
Thank you so much . I need to hear that . ❤

Yes! Getting those bad memory items out is really freeing! ❤️
I m currently Decluttering everything in my house. No space for junk.
Fun times ahead! Enjoy the freeing feeling!!! ❤️
We have some of those categories... especially paper ( my husband) and me it's usually presents that I got and i don't need...
Identifying the why is a great first step! ❤️

Yes, absolutely. The key is not to let the long term storage things be forgotten about! Assess often! ❤️

What was the “dangerous” mind set of clutter? I probably fall under that
I think it was the I want to remember one
