Is this REALLY adding value to my life or not? Or is it perhaps subtracting from my life? The whole do I serve it or does it serve me angle I guess. Just the consistency also tho with the regular evaluating of things as I go through my day to day life.
@@ArrowHillCottage I want to try the “making it a game” approach. I’d probably do 1 item on Monday, 2 on Tuesday, up to 7 on Sunday then start over. This way I don’t think I’d get burned out. Right now I’m in “donate” mode big time. I have a big black bag in my garage to put stuff in until it’s full. Then it goes in my car until I make a donation run.
One thing you didn't mention that has been a huge help to me so much and goes well with The minimal mom's thinking is Dana K White's 'clutter threshold', how much stuff can you handle? That took my decluttering to a whole new level. I've had great use of most of these tips, but what sparks joy only worked in the very beginning since much too many things sparked joy in me! 😂
This was a great summary! 💯 I've been following Clutterbug (her stories are crazy!), The Minimal Mom, and A to Zen Life... but the one that speaks to me most is Dana K. White because I'm a slob. Her method has helped me most thus far. 🗑 I use the advice of others depending on the situation and when I get stuck. I didn't accumulate all this junk overnight so I'm not trying to eliminate it overnight. I've also learned to NOT badger my spouse and just let them see how things are changing when I get rid of MY junk. 🤩
GREAT summary! Can’t wait to view some of the videos you linked. It took me 3 hrs to declutter and organize what had been a HUGE pile of shoes on my closet floor. It wouldn’t have taken this long except I got inspired to reorganize my pants, skirts, dresses, slips, and dressy cami’s/tank tops, plus move out of season clothes to another closet… I was exhausted afterward but it felt so good to feel motivated! My two cents: When decluttering or organizing a closet, wear a face mask to keep from breathing in the inevitable dust which may lead to serious respiratory problems. Happy decluttering!
Hi I’ve done Swedish death cleaning and am maintaining now so I do 1 in 1 out it has taken about 16 months and you keep going back and do more layers thankyou for all your advice
@@AnthonySampson-bs7jp yes that’s the way to go for me too. I got the bulk of death cleaning done in about six months. It felt amazing 🤩 Now I can stay on top of things, being mindful of purchases as life goes on, practicing 1 in 1 out . Keep up the good work 👍
One that works well for me is to just look around a room as I walk through it, and find something that needs to go. Also, Miss Heart on Hoarder's Heart channel does small chunks of decluttering at a time and then she sweeps the floor in that area if it things were on the floor. Very practical and can be done in a few minutes. Another way is just to do five minutes a day of decluttering. Really makes a difference.
Thank you! I think being able to compare is important for people - shows that there are so many different approaches to take! Not one size fits all! ❤️
I have a problem with this concept of "Can I replace it in 20 minutes or for $20 or less." You should always keep a spare of every essential thing. Flashlights, radios, can openers, etc. Maybe you can replace it cheaply and easily now but you don't know what you will face in the future when you need it. You may be broke, unemployed, you may be in a hurricane or blizzard, you may be relying on canned food, etc. If you are in an emergency with one broken can opener and no money, you will be very happy you saved that extra can opener or whatever. Also, "does this spark joy" should not be the reason you keep something. 80% of my possessions do not spark joy but they are necessary and functional. Getting rid of something perfectly useful but joyless is just wasteful in my opinion.
We all have our own level of comfort when it comes to back up items. In your case- you wouldn’t be agonizing over if you should keep the spare can opener or not, you would just keep it! I think that rule is more for if you want to pare down but are struggling ❤️
@@princessdumbarton9877 you could have a backup container for sure! For me, it’s about space and organization. Being in control of it all and not letting the things control my life. Also for me, I finally realized I was almost living with fear of not knowing what the future holds. The fear easily started to dominate without me knowing it. Then I realized, am I having faith and trust in God that He will watch over me and provide for my needs? So for me, it also came down to a faith/ trust issue. Now I’m doing better living today than fearing tomorrow . Godspeed friend. ❤️
All of the methods are great. I resonate with Dawn the most. Her mantra is basically keeping what you are able/willing to manage. Which one(s) do you resonate with the most?
Dawn for sure - and the container method also. But, different approaches have been helpful for me at different points. At the beginning of my minimalism journey I went through a series of decluttering games that was really a great motivational push! ❤️
When I was first staring out I found a lot of great traction playing the different ‘games’ - like filling the basket or setting a timer for a few minutes. This kept me from getting too overwhelmed. Now that I’m on a more maintaining mode- I like just doing one in / one out and also doing a constant survey of our stuff and recognizing when it needs to be pared down more. ❤️
@ArrowHillCottage very interesting to hear! I got started by doing the kon mari process prior to a house move. And after the house move (to a smaller space) I kept going with a mixture of the Minimal Mom and Dana K White. The Minimalists' 20 / 20 Rule is always at the back of my mind... Have a blessed Christmas. G Ire
I like the idea of emptying a room. It sounds exhausting though. I'm running out of stuff to declutter. Now I'm working on putting things where they belong. My house looks so much better as I do this. I find stuff to get rid of as I do it. I'm a bee, by the way.
Lol. I need to get on that Sunday paper thing. Right now it’s bad. So bad. I think it goes back to tech tho. First I must get a spreadsheet or two set up and I’ve been putting it off. The former accountant having to hire an accountant. Sacrilege. 😅😅 I want the easy button so bad right now. Lol. I feel so off kilter with all the moving upheaval right now. (Not so good for a die hard half Mr Monk cricket type lol). We are working on it a bit before I move so right now it’s like the abandoned renter stuff looming in the background and trying to stitch by at two residences temporarily. And the driving quite a bit back and forth. I don’t think I was cut out to be some “world traveler” really. Lol. I guess the good news is this part of it won’t be permanent at least. I do tend to lean a lot toward The Minimal Mom approach tho. And hushing a room somewhat. Things CAN get really “loud”sometimes. idk exactly how many diff tips I picked up where. A lot of it was very helpful to me tho.
And I think that different approaches work better during different seasons of life! Moving has got to be one of the most stressful and mentally draining things…so be sure to give yourself plenty of grace right now! ❤️
@@ArrowHillCottage Lol. Thanks! You are def right about that. Moving. I’m pretty excited that I finally found my top “style” lol. Although now that Art Deco ish has me under its drama spell, idk if I can be called a “minimalist” per se. 😅😅I’m so enthralled by the dramatic contrasts and the symmetry and the clean lines and the intricate craftsmanship tho so I DO think that would fit well enough. Some rooms I want “louder” and some others I want more hushed. But good loud, not bad loud. 😂😂 Just knowing my style takes a lot of pressure off tho and I think it’s a good thing to study. It helps you know better what “cohesively fits” and what doesn’t. So ergo, it takes away a lot of the decision fatigue about decor and colors and how to put a whole house together with more precision. I’m so glad I took the time to listen to the interior designer people teaching me all about what all goes into various particular styles and the logic behind them…before I lunged forward. About to get to the really fun part soon so I’m very excited. Lol. It has also helped me better decide if or how to refinish my deco pieces. 😬 (in order to not just wash entirely over or change the style of the piece. Aka to honor the Art Deco style but yet it all doesn’t have to stay a deep red stain color every time).
I have finalized and arranged my set up first when we bought the house. All the furniture cabinets storage were set first. And then the items were organised. That way I am not buying storage for my items. I am buying storage according to the space I have and buying items according to the storage I have. Now no more cabinet or storage coming in my house. Two rules I have set for myself. 1. No items are lying outside 2. Inside items are always properly organised and all items should have their own space and there should also have definite empty space in all wardrobe/storage for a clean look. If items are not fitting. They are fitting in trash can then😂
