I can see the benefits of making the enclosures larger and more interactive for the tarantulas. I'm used to the annual cycle of Mexican blonde tarantulas as well as the smaller all black species. The males are very active and wander but the females tend to stay in their holes waiting for food to wander close enough.

I find your hobbies extremely fascinating and thoroughly trust your skills and decisions as an animal keeper. I used to have LOTS of various critters and understand the need to occasionally downsize. Who am I to criticize what you do, when I'm re-living youthful times through you? At 75 I'm slowing down a bit and only keep two sister PeekePooTzus, 13 yr old Thelma and Louise.
I would love to see your arachnids in a natural enclosure. Because of your videos on spiders, they have helped me overcome my fear of spiders. I now have 3 tarantulas and a jumping spider. I do plan on getting more. Thank you for your videos.
In my experience, darkling beetles are ignored by a lot of predators for one simple fact: they emit a really bad smell that messes with the predator's senses. They are like stink bugs in a way.
Same here. Tarantulas won’t eat them either
right, non of my scorpions or tarantulars is eating them.
it's interesting you mention this! While I agree there are plenty of animals that ignore them, I also have plenty of tarantulas and geckos that will eat them! (my tokays like them)
@@Reptiliatus Tokay's love any type of beetle since in the wild its one of their primary food sources. Its why they evolved such a massively strong bite for such a small body: that bite is enough to shatter even the strongest carapace that their normal prey-hard shell cockroaches and various types of beetles would have.
It'll be awesome to see the more naturalistic invert enclosures, I always love seeing your arachnid vids!

Answer of the day: My opinion on people keeping venomous creatures for pets is it's cool there cool but I wouldn't do it I respect everyone that do it but anyways great video
I support this decision. I still say that you should link a separate channel for inverts because of the type of content that you usually offer. Your reptile keeping videos are just so wholesome and chill by comparison and aren't nearly as spooky as invert videos. I like the spooky, but it does explain why it isn't as popular. It's simply a level of expectation when it comes to your content. You've set the bar so high with the wholesome vibe that it makes it so that the things you like doing aren't always what makes good videos for your particular collection of fans. That is all my dude. Keep on keeping on.
P.S... I recommend a video for Brian. I know you're probably already on it. He's still around at the moment, but I think it would mean a lot to him now while he's still cogent.

I love emperor scorpions! I’m sorry to hear that they’ve become hard to find in the pet trade. I hope you find a female soon! I’d love to see babies! They’re such amazing animals. We had a couple as kids. We were never concerned about the venom, but we also were very careful to watch their body language. Rules included move slowly, wash our hands thoroughly beforehand, fingers together, hand over hand to give a continuing path for them, freeze if they opened their claws or didn’t have their tail relaxed. A raised tail is obviously a threat pose, but they also would bend it to the side, touching the stinger to the person’s hand in warning. They would mostly use their claws to pinch before threatening with their tail. They would do a “touch pinch”, where the claw is holding part of our hand in warning first, then escalate to actually pinching if we didn’t freeze and let them get comfortable. It only took one proper pinch to teach each of us exactly how slow we needed to move (minor bruising, I think, idr even using ice). They had different personalities- the one was more laidback and explored more, going up our arms and wanting to explore both sides of our hands, while the other was quick to put its tail to the side if we made it the slightest bit uncomfortable. They crawled into our hands with little encouragement and weren’t eager to get off until they had gotten their “exercise”, so I feel we were offering enrichment. Those two were special, though. When holding emperors at animal education presentations, the scorpions tended to just want to sit, they weren’t constantly exploring and needed more encouragement to move from one person to the next. Maybe they were being asked to move more than they wanted, lol.
I'm glad there's a genus called Hottentotta. I'm not a huge fan of nomenclature using proper names usually, but this one is so whimsical it makes me smile.
I really like seeing all animals in more naturalistic enclosures, especially tropical ones. Even if it's harder get a good look at the animals, I still enjoy looking at the plants!
Sixty years ago I kept a woodland type terrarium with pairs of Anoles and very young Painted turtles. It had a climbing tree, fat logs, plants and a large, pebble-lined bowl. I fed them all live foods. I also had 13 tropical fish tanks and worked at a pet shop. I was 13 yrs old.
When I married a guy into catching & keeping California snakes; from rattlers to large boas to tiny Ring-necked snakes and a bunch of culibrids. His Rattlesnakes were his, not mine. I'm comfortable with snakes, but not venomous critters. We also had a Desert tortoise, several tarantulas, scorpions, and a shrew. Also I caught and kept Stickle-backs and a very gravid Crawfish who loosed hundreds (!) of little ones.
All of this to say I might have been a bit of a tom-boy or better... a nature lover! Didn't matter if it was Salamanders or Kangaroo rats, hamsters or field mice, Parakeets or wild victims of window strikes...I wanted to keep them all.
While venomous snakes, lizards, arachnids, arthropods, etc are all quite interesting, I'm just not into keeping them myself. I'm also quite a gardner of iris to peonies and miniture bulbs to succulents... but avidly avoid cactus, thorned roses and most other plants with stickers & spines.
Perhaps I'm too lazy... but there is sooo much flora & fauna to keep and/or enjoy, why bother with those that can give a terrible hurt?
If it means less quantity for more qualitative content then we will support you no matter what. One should appreciate when a content creator such as yourself is even considering our opinions to make some great changes with the way you keep your Tarantulas. I know down sizing is a bit sad but if it’s for the best then that’s what’s up!
Also it’s funny that you are down sizing but got yourself 3 beautiful females. It would be amazing to watch you do the rehousing projects!
Also do you maybe have a list already of the specimens you are planning to let go?

Oh man. Once I discovered your arachnid content, I went back and watched every video involving them! Would be disappointed but understand about less arachnid content, and would love to see larger enclosures for the arachnids as well! Excited to see how you move forward :)

It’s a glimpse of a time hundreds of millions of years ago when the eurypterids - aka sea scorpions, though not actually scorpions - were top predators. They were chelicerates, all carnivorous, and some did look like your pets but on a giant scale. The biggest were the longest arthropods known, over 2 meters, beating out even the giant millipedes. They must have been amazing.

My larger ladies are in exo terra 12x12x18” and they seem to enjoy the space. I hope you decide to down size and upgrade 💜

I would say that it is amazing that people get the opportunity to experience and own animals that possess venom as long as you are extremely responsible with that animal.
For highly venomous animals you should have to have to have a special permit for, which is something a lot of states and countries do, but for animals with a low level of venom as long as you take good care of them you should be able to have them as long as they are not a protected species.

Amazing feeding video!!! But first off before I forget, what is that glorious Black and Tan Tarantula that makes an appearance at around 15:30? Such a beauty! And yes, I would love to see more naturalistic, bio active enclosures with regard to your spiders (or any creature), including videos showing how you create these enviroments. I've never seen a scorpion eat up close like that and their chelicerae are a little bit like the inner "jaws" of Alien - kind of unsettling to watch in action (but super cool!). Finally, I don't see why people shouldn't be able to keep venomous pets; however, perhaps the hobby should get out in front of this if it is proving to be an issue, and develop some sort of certification when it comes to keeping pets with medically significant venom, otherwise if any governmental agency gets involved, they may just ban them altogether. At least, it seems to be better to be proactive about these things, but it's just my thought since you asked. Sorry for the long response!!!

Every person has their love. Be it a horse aka farm animals (we have many). tortoises (we have many). Dogs and cat we have many, lol fish yep in our pond we have about 40-50 of them. I have to laugh because I lived in Arizona for 31 yrs and there are 3 different species of scorpions, 🦂 then I went and helped my exes mom in Oklahoma, guess what stung me there, yep a scorpion. The strangest feeling on earth for me, where I was stung in my arm went numb, and for a week all I tasted was metal. It was worse than going to the dentist. Moth completely numb and metallic taste. Strange feeling. Hope y’all have a fantastic blessed new year. Tfs ❤😊
Regarding downsizing the collection in order to build much larger vivariums for them... I honestly would LOVE to see build videos! It'd be a unique angle on making arachnid content... at least I think. (my arachnophobic self doesn't go looking for other videos about 'em, I just watch yours for support's sake! 😅)

I keep bees, and never really thought about them as being venomous. I do keep an epipen on me just in case I randomly develop an anaphylactic reaction to stings when I visit them, but you actually made me think about my my concerns about people keeping other venomous animals.
I don’t have any experience with scorpions 🦂 but I sure do enjoy watching yours! My favorite tarantula that you have is the electric blue legged ones. I know I got the name wrong but you’ll know what I mean.
I'm a keeper of lethal scorps and venomous snakes too. Love these animals my whole life, got my 1st snakes in the age of 8 years.😁✌🏽

I think knowledge and training are important for keeping anything, but especially hot. I don't disagree with people wanting to keep venomous snakes or any other animal that has the potential to cause serious bodily harm. But I also agree with certifications that prove you know what you're up against and how to properly care for it because ignorance can bring about arrogance and that's no good for keeping hot species. If someone was able to purchase a rattlesnake the same way we purchase bearded dragons at expos that would spell doom for our wonderful special interests.
In the UK we are governed by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act (DWA) which covers most front fanged snakes and most scorpions and spiders dangerous to humans.
QOTD: I think if the venom is medically significant, like with snakes, people should get training with those who have experience with the animal(s) they're wanting. As a keeper, you are responsible for keeping other animals safe from being bitten.
As for your question with your T's, I think it's cool that you want to downsize the amount so you can upgrade the size of their habitats.
i'm mostly into dart frogs and arachnids.
Personally, I would love to be able to acquire and breed some sydney funnel web spiders. But, finding the right species is not easy.

QOTD I’m not sure I’d be interested in keeping venomous critters myself, unless I had thousands to spend on a saltwater aquarium. And I’m a cuddler to mine, so not a great idea lol I don’t mind others keeping them unless it’s just for show or views, they’d better respect them and keep them properly!
I'm ok with keeping ' hots ' as long as people train under somebody in the hobby ( snakes ) . Scorpions / spiders / lizards .. if you get stung / bitten , make sure you know what to tell medical personnel. If you can buy antivenom , even better. I do think if you are keeping hots , you need to have them in a secure area away from children.
QOTD: I keep arachnids, including old worlds. My Balfouri communal is the jewel of my collection! I do enjoy keeping old worlds. Their colors can be just incredible. In my experience, keeping the potential venom in mind and staying calm and relaxed during feedings and rehousings makes a world of difference. Respect and calm :) I don’t keep any venomous reptiles, but I love seeing other’s venomous collections!
Hi , I love your videos and I’d like to ask you a question on your steno substrate. When you try to use the poop scooper for the stone desert does it fall through good because I know it has a lot of pebbles in it and I’m worried that if I do use stone desert substrate it won’t fall through the poop scooper. thank you bye
QOTD: I definitely support keeping venomous and anything that falls under the “medically significant” category. However, the caveat is I do think there should be regulations with training and ensuring that there keepers who are getting licenses (if needed) have done their part of research, having a secure enclosure, and has a safety plan for every species that they keep. I know that’s the common with hot snakes, but I think it boils down to I’m cool with it, but people need to understand and be accountable for the risks, not only to themselves but others and the environment especially when keeping non-native species. When it comes down to things you don’t necessarily need licensure for, I just don’t think they need to be sold at your chain pet shop. (Arachnids/Scorpions/Hognose etc) I think you should be required to purchase from a reputable and knowledgeable reptile or exotic breeder/supplier.

Hognoses are not that venomous and their venom will mostly not hurt u and they usually do not bite I have one and she's really gentle.
I've never had any luck with partho scorps producing offspring. Medically significant venomous scorpions have never bothered me, unlike venomous snakes.
have you ever tried keeping ants? maybe not for videos, but just as a casual thing for you. it's really gratifying to catch a queen and watch the colony grow. Anyway, this was a great video and I've really been wanting to add a scorpion to my family. my oldest scolopendra Dahani passed away and it's just too soon to get another one. but I've always wanted an Asian forest scorpion.

Ahh super awesome yeah I unfortunately was epically scared of spiders the big ones weren't something I was really concerned with however the small ones u can't see really freaked me out and like 6 or 7 years ago I started keeping reptiles and that caused me to see a lot of diff content I wouldn't have and it sparked my curiosity also a long that time a jumping spider found me and made me his buddy lol lil dude chilled on me for over an hour I had fallen asleep in my front room since I don't smoke in the house and I woke up to him still on me and then he proceeded to molt on me it totally changed my perspective and made me even more curious which prompted my research and long of the short of it I now have 7 t's and the collection is absolutely growing I love Makin their enclosure and learning their behaviors also secretly love making enclosures out of things that weren't meant to be enclosures lol and I now have prob like 20 enclosures just extra I love bins and boxes so it's just adding to my collection lmfao but it's helping me be more organized! I have 6 beardies and 4 leos but from watching u and a few others there are so many other things that are so epic and now that my fear is gone it's opened up a whole new world

My answer of the day is more of a question, but why do people keep venomous snakes? Something a little more hands off like fish or even inverts I understand but like snakes have such pretty representation and morphs of non venomous. So why take that risk?
Also: I love the idea of spiders in full terrariums, it’s something I rarely see, but then again I’m not super into inverts tho I do find them fascinating

I see no harm in keeping venomous critters as long as we're responsible. And if had to choose between a bunch of venomous critters coming after me, or a large dog, or pissed off cat. The answer is easy.

I have a decent amount of tarantulas (mostly old world) and 1 scorpion (asian forest). I would really like to get more into the dangerous side of scorpions. as someone who's only had 1 scorpion so far, what scorpion would be the "next step" (idk how else to word it lol) in getting more into the medically significant scorpions?
I want to be safe, of course, but I also don't want to just sit here and wish. I want to put this dream into action!

If people are relying on you for arachnid content, they should probably branch out. I looove your invert content, but I'm not at all bothered by the limited output. It's makes perfect sense. You're not an arachnid channel lol. Fortunately there are other great channels that focus exclusively on inverts of all types or just specific groups. I like Dave's Little Beasties for arachnid content. Lots of brilliantly done pairings and sack pulls and everything else, with great close up images and tons of cool species. Another channel I like for invert content, heavy on tarantulas and a couple of frogs eating giant roaches, is Westside Reptiles. His feedings are awesome and his style is _unique_ . Hilariously irreverent lol
I love keeping pets that are venomous i currently have 5 tarantulas. Would love to get a tarantula just not sure what kind of comtainer to go with for that. But someday ill have one. And centipedes have always been something i have wanted.

Ultimately, I think that people should be able to keep what they want. Personally, I dont think I'll ever keep medically significant venomous animals. If a person does, however, thats their choice to put their life on the line. Same as skydiving, mountain climbing, whitewater rapiding, or anyother potentially dangerous activities. Life is full of danger, and it's every individual's responsibility to decide which risks to take, and which to not.

I have no issues with people keeping venomous animals as long as they're well educated and careful. I love arachnids but can't see myself keeping them as pets

I often wonder if we should just remove all the warning labels and let the problem solve itself out. 🤭
But honestly, I’m against romanticizing hot-keeping but also against emphasizing too much how they are only for few “chosen ones”. And the reasoning behind that is the kids and youngsters are prone to try everything which is prohibited.
Therefore I think ppl should be talking more about how to keep and take care of hots safely and what will happen if they don’t.
Regarding the content. I found my way here because of isopods. I stayed because of your personality. I wouldn’t mind if you didn’t post any arachnids content but I still find it amusing watching videos about them every now and then.
What I’d like to warn you about is posting only most popular videos, aka feeding videos of any species, since they get boring after a while. Especially if everybody just eat and that’s it.
Also, respectfully, complaining about views is out and way too common nowadays. I understand the importance of income but (for instance) I have a full time job and errands to run but I still find time to watch many YT channels. Both for support and my own amusement. Do I complain on every comment section about the 💩 customers I deal everyday? Nope. That’s my job and some days are better than others I watch TH-cam to relax not to listen more complaints. If the thumbnail the title and the content is on point people will watch it happily. ☺️

What I forgot to mention though was often less is more and downsizing your collection and elaborated habitats would be really cool to see. Especially since you often put a lot of effort into the setups. When will get a whole reptile apartment tour? I guess we haven’t seen one after you moved. 😁

Hello, how do you handle the temperature for the scorpions?
Most of my scorpions are kept at reptile room temps. My desert species are situated above another tank on a rack with lights and sits in the mid to high 80’s F for those individuals during the day and low-mid 70’s at night.
Qotd: I’m not well educated so I don’t have a firm opinion that I advocate for. But it makes me nervous. Humans can have a knee jerk reaction to animals that cause any level of inconvenience, with devastating consequences for the animal. Like killing bees and spiders because they make someone nervous, or wolves or thylacine who were blamed for depleting livestock. Anyway with venomous animals I worry that if the keeper makes a mistake / is hurt, the animal will pay.
I personally would never own a venomous pet. If you're brave enough and skilled enough to own a venomous pet, kudos to you. Be safe and enjoy your pet.

How come a Zoo has not hired you? Also ??? on tarantulas. If you mated your tarantula how many babies would you get? Also would the male survive after mating? How small would they be? Would they eat you out of house and home?

Yeah, same. They definitely need to be heavily regulated by the state. I've seen videos from reptile shows in some states with sections filled with tables covered in tons of different venomous snakes for sale to anyone who wants. It's insane.
Medically significant animals aren’t for me as I love to free hand all my pets. Plus I’m very accident prone lol however I don’t think responsible keepers should be banned from having them.
