So I "accidentally" cheated and heard 20 seconds of this album by Interpol titled "Turn On The Bright Lights" and it was good... so I decided to listen to the rest of the album due to very popular demand!
Tracklist for Part 1:
1. Untitled
2. Obstacle 1
3. NYC
4. PDA
5. Say Hello To The Angels
6. Hands Away
My Snapchat: @NinjafuVine
"It's like a day of summer where everyone's just wearing black." That's probably the most accurate way to describe Interpol, especially since that's half of their band pictures
It's so funny because I wore a black shirt and sunglasses to match outfits when I went to an event to have a photo with them, the result is hilarious xD
Bradley has discovered the sad album
Jodes so true 🤣
@Francisco Antonio looool, Interpol is sad and dark, but this album is blue, my man
@Francisco Antonio I’ve never felt they were sad either but i had a friend say “oh your emo music again” when I played them in the car and i was like “what?!”. They always make me happy and are just fun to listen to. Probably in my top favorite 3 bands.
To me it feels like the guy standing in the corner of a party in a small NYC apartment while everyones having a good time and he leaves early
Disappointed that PDA got a half-hearted shrug. It’s a jam, in the way that the song completely changes in the outro.
It's probably one of the best songs I've ever heard
I actually think that PDA would be fairly forgettable in the context of the album, if it didn't build up to that outro. It's so good
How he didnt vibe PDA I have no idea lol its so fucking good.
PDA is incredible. I have such mixed feelings about this guys reviews. I like his commentary but I wished he had listened to the record on his own in silence first. He seems to find quite a lot of depth in his first listen but I’d be more interested in his opinion if I was watching his second listen. I couldn’t ruin my first experience of a record by talking over it and stopping it constantly. I know this is the format of what he is doing but it makes him come across as distracted and shallow.
@@rolon-will3362 I get what you mean, but honestly I'm surprised by how much he's getting out of his first listen. I never like music I hear for the first time and him feeling Obstacle 1 like that was pretty fun to watch
interpol was a post-punk band hidden within the bands of 2000s garage rock
Year late reply, but that's why the terms post-punk revival and garage rock revival are -interpol- interchangeable
Interpol, Bloc Party, and The National are legitimately post-punk bands.
@@WiloPolis03Inter-changea-pol?
Man the intro was incredible. Brad is just getting better and better at editing and video making.
That Intro Was The best Of all Time In TH-camr Video Ever It Was A Masterpiece
It Has Very Funny Moments, Edit, Kind heart to it Is Masterpiece Love so Much, I Will No Forget Ever
the moment i first heard obstacle 1, felt like i'd known the song forever
The intro sounds like marquee moon
If it weren’t for Interpol, The Cure wouldn’t exist.
Best comment here.
Ah yes the band from the 70s was inspired by a 2000s band
Edit: edit: I saw another of your comments and I now realize you weren't serious

For more 2000s Post-Punk, check out Bloc Party’s Silent Alarm!
👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
he needs to do this the greatest post punk album of the 2000s and the best indie rock record of the 2000s period
BibbyBoxx2219 - Bloc Party is really underrated
That Record I wouldn’t say underrated in the grand scheme of things but I’d say less talked about now . It’s just they hit their creative plateau very early but they still headlined Glastonbury so I wouldn’t say they’re underrated as such. Just they stopped making good records to keep relevant. But still silent alarm is a masterwork
@@marines.7022 nah man weekend in the city is a amazing and four is great and hymns has amazing stuff on it
oh yeah so the killers said that they had this album spinning on repeat when they were recording hot fuss so they were a massive influence yhyh.
Damn, Hot Fuss should have probably been better in that case lol
Padawan Sound ahhh it’s not a bad record by any means . but this is 100x better yes
@@marines.7022 Ah, I've never been a Killers fan. To be fair, having their music repeatedly hammered into my brain in countless British bars/clubs in my youth almost certainly didn't help haha
Padawan Sound their first two records are genuinely decent listens. They’re not life changing or experimental af but they just have solid 00s alt rock bangers ones that probably deserve their popularity
When this album came out a lot of people actually accused the singer, and band of ripping off Ian Curtis and Joy Division. It wasn’t until years later I got around to listening to Joy Division and the similarities are striking.
Me the entire video: WHEN IS HE GOING TO APPRECIATE THE BASS?
ian curtis Carlos D is an enigma
SAMEEEEE
"Like a gothic Killers" oh yeah baby you hit the nail on the head. The Killers were pretty heavily inspired by TOTBL
Can’t wait for his reaction to Stella Was A Diver. Best song on the album
Same ! I love this song so much
i am fully convinced that the last four tracks of this album are the best chunks of music created in history
@@pinheadnick8540 this. For a while I was so in love with the first half that I didn't realize that the last two songs are the best songs on the album
THE NEW
Oh yeah
So many great New York bands during this era. Interpol, The Strokes, Liars, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio, LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture. All SO good.
What about now?
An obvious influence on Interpol is Joy Division, but I’d argue that the Chameleons, another post punk band from the 80s, is an even bigger inspiration
Agreed
They said they weren’t inspired by them but Paul acknowledged the similarities
Chameleons are fire
I'd say television
The Joy division/Chameleons influence is the most obvious, but there's a heavy dose of The Smiths in their work (especially the super esotetic lyrics) and I detect some serious Shoegaze-esque soundscapes reminiscent of Slowdive.

He made the mistake of replaying obstacle 1 before moving on cause hes now gonna be on a obstacle 1 loop
But secretly the " *right* " way to listen to the album is to replay every song more than once
@shitposter hence the more than once
You posted this on Leif Erickson Day??! Perfect
Of all the ways one could describe how listening to interpol feels like, fun is the one that I would never use.
Absolutely top notch content. Will subscribe.
Okay so I thought I'd edit this comment with my thoughts and experience with this album.
On the musical side: you'll notice there's not a ton of virtuoso instrumental pieces, but the album does not need it to convey its message.
The guitars add texture and deepness to the sound, but there's rarely a melodic line clashing with the vocals, it's actually the bass that does the melodic and distinct work. Carlos Dengler is probably one of the most creative person to ever play the instrument in a sorta big band. Tracks like The New and Obstacle 1 would be entirely forgettable if they didn't have such strong, memorable bass lines.
The drumming is outstanding, complementing the musical landscape perfectly without trying to impose itself on top of the picture.
Conceptually, I believe the album has a certain message. To me this album is an introspective experience. It is designed to touch on the darkest and saddest parts of the listener and turn them up to eleven.
It is about missing, loving, destruction, betrayal and pain. But it's also about showing you that even though you feel all that, everything has an end. It is reminiscent of all bad emotions, but takes your hand and accompanies you through them in the sense that it is a cathartic experience. I believe the creationism of the lyrics goes in that direction. The metaphors don't appear to make sense until they click because you grow on them.
It sounds dark, raw, sometimes more so than it actually tries, but if you're in the right mood, you'll end up almost a different person when you're done listening to it.
I am a simple person: I see something related to Interpol so I click on it.
Brad you cant have an opinion! You must say every album i like is amazing!
Welcome back Brad... I hope your felling better now, love you
Yes, every band WAS influenced by Radiohead.
yeah you can really hear the Radiohead influence on the beatles
@@atotallyrandomperson3889 Especially on tracks like Revolution 9, Within You Without You, Tomorrow Never Knows and the unreleased Carnival of Light.
If it weren’t for Radiohead, The Smiths wouldn’t have existed.

SUBWAY IS A PORNO
I’ve lived in and around NYC my entire life. Moved into Manhattan after college in 1999. This album changed everything for so many of us in our twenties. I saw them play this entire album in a small place called Maxwells in Hoboken just after this album dropped. The NYC music scene was still so good- late nights seeing Ryan Adams at the Mercury Lounge. What a great time in my life. Happy to see you all enjoying this work of Art.
Gotta say I didn't know who this band was, but i loved it. The bass in Untitled is amazing!!!

Brandon Flowers from the Killers actually made a cover of Obstacle 1. I actually discovered this album through the Killers because I thought Obstacle 1 was sung by Brandon Flowers. But this album really transports you to a dirty 2000 New York City
i listened to it for years but there's something about the vibe of this record that is still effortlessly enigmatic, like no other thing
Nice profile pic. Bradley should react to TDAG
Brad I really hope you do the B-side “Specialist” off of Turn On The Bright Lights. I honestly believe it to be one of the best Interpol tracks and thought it should’ve maybe been on the album.
Edit: unfortunately Brad didn’t listen to Specialist :(
yeah it shocks me how that got a B-side slot
Specialist, to me is one of the best songs ever. My jaw dropped the first time I heard it. Sounds obvious, but no other group outside of interpol could ever compose such a thing. It is relentless.
also "Interlude" god those like 12 seconds sound so orgasmic
"That song Specialist, it wasn't on the record unfortunately" - Paul Banks
Specialist is a very special song and those bass fills are amazing but at the same time I dont know where it would've fit in the album, the vibe is immaculate all the way through but the way specialist starts wouldve changed that
I haven't watched the reaction yet, but i'm so excited to see what you think of it since it's one of my fav albums ever. Cheers!
Damn the new format slaps i think that while this album may not be the best example of re listening to songs before giving your final thoughts as it really is THAT good but it will show better on other albums By the way the intro was hillarious keep it up brad you're killing it with these reactions
This has to be your most well-produced video. I like the changes to the format you've made too, and your energy was really good throughout. keep sleeping young bradawan
I like the new format, dude. Keep it going. Interpol has always been one of my favorites. You should check out and review Bloc Party’s Silent Alarm. It is simply amazing
This album is like the equivalent of a Tarkovsky movie in it’s imagery
Brad isn't prepared for how much money he'll lose in that AM video.
Nobody has ever said this before, but that album is exactly what Alex was singing about years earlier on Fake Tales of San Fransisco.
It's sad but I agree
Hey, but at least we got TBH&C which sounds like the exact opposite of AM
AM is not a bad album. Don’t be mad because it attracted so many shallow fans.
@@beatuplexus it's fine I suppose, just pretty lackluster compared to their early albums
TelepathicFish not really. It’s about on par with the the rest of their catalog. Great tracks on there: R U Mine?, Arabella, WYOCMWYH, One For The Road, Knee Socks, etc.
One of your best videos!
Really think this reaction format is much better than just a first reaction
Hey Brad! Loved the intro and the new video format. If you liked this record I HIGHLY recommend you check out Funeral by Arcade Fire. It's like Turn on the Bright Lights but the lyrics are slightly more discernable and the vocals and instrumentation are 10000000% more emotional. It's Turn on the Bright Lights on emotional steroids.
Brilliant video, brilliant album. You're making quality stuff brad, don't stop.
The moodiest album I’ve ever heard. Will forever be my favorite
This man is gonna be BROKE after making the AM video!
18:04 early 2000s nyc had a wave of bands all heavily inspired by post punk called post punk revival. The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, LCD Soundsystem, although all drawing from different variations of it.
Fun fucking times!!
Bloc Party too. Great bands in that era.
Wow I re-listened to this album yesterday and now Brad comes out with a review lucky me. Gotta say it's one of my favourite albums of all time
I actually really like him, he’s a lot more interesting than fantano and has a better personality
I absolutely love your new style brad, good shit man!
I found this band when I was 19 and couldn't stop listening to them for a decade. First 3 albums are their best in my opinion. I loved watching your reaction cause it certainly mirrored mine when I first discovered them. Enjoy!
I subbed when I first saw your channel pop up covering Songs for the Deaf. Turn on the Bright Lights is my favorite album. "Everything is so off about this." My feelings exactly the first time I heard the album in '03. I couldn't stop listening to it; I had never heard anything like it. Great editing. Love your reaction to the songs, especially the "summer day and everyone is walking around wearing black" - that might be one of the best descriptions of this album I've heard in a long time. Looking forward to part two! Cheers!
I like how you spend some time "getting into" a space to get the music. Lots of people, specially if they are being critical(wether they realize they are being critical or not) don't realize they just aren't getting music when they are listening, as least not in the way that a large part, if not vast majority of the fandom for a band does.
I remember hearing Obstacle 1 on Pandora like 10 years ago and thinking it was a great song and putting it on all my playlists. C'mere would eventually go on them as well, and then I heard Stella was a Diver and was like hell yea this is one of the best songs ever. Oh man and Rest my Chemistry that one is great as well. I've never loved a full album of theirs(I did like this one quite a bit though) but their best work is just top notch.
Oh and "Home spun Desperation's Knowing, Inside your Cover's always blown" is likely a reference to self-loathing. What would create more desperation than if you created your own self-hatred(home spun) and it came from inside, because inside you can't hide from how shitty you are are(your cover's always blown.) Lots of their lyrics are essentially poetic ways of saying they hate themselves.
that is a fantastic interpretation of those lyrics! I always struggle with deciphering Interpol lyrics, but I will definitely keep in mind that theme of self-hatred throughout their music in the future
Confirmed new favorite TH-camr of 2020, I’m Stoked for future content!!!

Fun review! Definitely interested to hear your thoughts on Leif Erikson in part 2. Paul's haunting vocals and the sad guitar melodies really hit me hard, and it's grown into one of my favorites of theirs.
Interpol is the other side of the coin in the music of this century, The Strokes and interpol are the two most influential bands without a doubt, of course interpol has a darker atmosphere and goes more for the Post punk revival, inspiring bands like Editors, Two Door Cinema Club, Vampire Weekend and even The Killers, sorry if my English has errors haha

His vocals sound like this cause he couldn't hear himself in the studio so he just yelled over the music
He couldn't hear his vocals during rehearsal, so his voice evolved like this. Of course he could hear his vocals in the studio, the vocals are recorded apart from the other instruments.
@@ian_5184 In case anybody's familiar with the Danish band Mew, the singer's extremely high-pitched vocals are for the same reason. He can sing pretty normal but you won't hear that on 99.9% of the songs.
