The bass player for this album Carlos was really integral to the sound they had back then. Sadly, he quit the band for no other reason than he wanted to change direction in life. He started out wanting to be a college professor, then a game show host, and eventually I don't know what he's doing now but he left a huge void right in the middle of this band's sound. And it was his creative process, not just his bass. He would take the music that Daniel wrote and work through it and make his own unique changes. He would make the bass a featured part of the songs, not just an afterthought.
Brilliantly done. You’re so right about the lyrics thing. So many people react to the lyrics. Which are almost never what affects anyone on first listens to a song, unless it’s Dylan or Cohen.
Great to see this reaction. I was on of the guys who asked for this. Great great to watch. Thanks man This record is also a grower, the more you listen, the more it´s fascinating on every level.
I love that you do this, it makes me appreciate these albums again. I take them for granted after listening to them for so many times. Watching this made me feel like I listened to it again for the first time. Loved it!
I downloaded this album and put it on my phone. Coming back from London one afternoon I decided to play it for the first time. Three repetitions later I was hooked.
They are completely different projects with different ambitions. Is This It is defined WAY less complex and ambitious than TOTBL, but it doesn’t need to be, they are both great artistic achievements imo.
All those songs are fantastic, just a great album!! Untitled is an absolutely unforgettable & incredible opener, loved watching you react to it. Do finish Pablo Honey sometime tho...pleaseee I've been waiting to see your reaction to the 2nd half :'D
this is the first time i've ever heard anyone compare these two records. i think they're vastly different imo. bloc party has a lot of complex aspects to their music while staying palatable. totbl is pretty straightforward but composed beautifully. idk. two very different records. SILENT ALARM IS DEF WORTH A LISTEN THO
Fun fact: The Killers had Turn On The Bright Lights on repeat while making Hot Fuss. You can definitely hear the Interpol influence in their first record.
wow, that’s wild to discover. I was born in 2001 and i discovered interpol and the killers specifically hot fuss in the same year. Which was 2009 when i was 8. I got turned onto both bands music from my mom and baby sitter (prob 22-23 at the time ironically my age now) and anyway as a young ass kid, i always associated the tracks i listened to from hot fuss and the interpol tracks i listened to as like the same “genre”. they felt linked. I’m sure i got them confused as the same band at first before being corrected. And so all these years later to discover one was a direct influence for the other is no surprise but also funny how i just intuitively as a kid felt it 😂 amazing
Your reactions to these songs are such a mood. And a lot of your reasons for liking the record so far even on first listen actually match with why I didn't like it at first and why it took a long time to grow on me,. But TOTBL is probably my favorite album ever now, so I'm more than happy that you're enjoying it so much
I w never seen a reaction to this entire album, I love it! NYC is my favorite song on the album and maybe my favorite Interpol song. If nothing else one of the greatest two chord songs ever!
Haha, you keep splicing parts of the songs out mid-stream, and it throws me off. But thanks for making this tribute if you will to the greatness of Interpol.
A fantastic reaction to one of my all-time fave albums. The first three Interpol albums are all gems and I'm desperate to see this debut remastered and pressed on double red vinyl.
Ayyyyyyyyy, so proud of you finally getting around to this album, it’s easily one of my favourite albums of all time and I could just go on for ages about how I love every single song to death. If you do really like this music I highly recommend you dive more into Post Punk like Joy Division, The Cure, The Specials, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy and similar bands to them.
I love this record! Thank you for your very informative reaction. I’m a casual listener, but your analysis helps me understand why I like it. you're in for a treat! funny you mention the killers, they actually have said interpol was a huge influence on them back in the day so i guess is a really good reference. The bass on interpol is brilliant (and this is coming from someone who doesn't really like Carlos D personally) but gotta give it to the man, he made the greatest basslines of all time. Kessler's patience when it comes to the building up of a song and the payoff are insane even to this day (listening to them live is a religious experience) Fogarino's drums are FIRE and Banks lyrics are just something else. Hope you can check the rest of their music cause I sure would love to be able to listen to this for the first time again. There's no going back!

When they released this album, there were many comparison between them and Joy Division and its singer, Ian Curtis. Personally they remind me of Echo and The Bunnymen, musically and the vocal style sometimes resembles Nick Cave.
Paul developed his vocal styles from the band’s early days when they didn’t have a mic so he would have to scream on top of the instruments and now his vocal is kinda yelly
