Yes. I think it’s limited to 24 but doesn’t count the royals like PW, PE and the King and Queen, etc. I believe it’s related to chivalry and service to the Crown. I’m not British. So very cool 👑
Outside of a hereditary peerage, it definitely is…on that note, I feel like the baronet (not to be confused with barony, ie, ‘baron’) is the ‘poseur’ of hereditary titles, because they are titles that were bought and paid for…not that other titles weren’t ’bought’ from time to time, but the baronetcy actually comes with a receipt with your purchase that says you paid for this title.

@@fukeonglai7202 The existence of the Order of St. Patrick is still justified. The UK government wants it's top 3 chivalric orders to represent its 3 constituent kingdoms - England (Garter), Scotland (Thistle) & (N).Ireland (St. Patrick). Given the complicated position of N. Ireland, it suits well to keep up a obsolete chivalric order associated with Ireland. However, no such motive can be ascertained for the chivalric orders associated with India
An idea for a video: Monarchs who suffered mental illnesses (or it was claimed that they did): Talal of Jordan, Ludwig II of Bavaria, Joanna I of Castile, Maria I of Portugal, Charles VI of France, George III of the UK, Philip V of Spain, etc.
I love learning about all of this-- though I admit, it's fodder for my own stories, but the pomp and the outfits are so compelling. As a longtime Harry Potter fanfiction author, when I heard "The Most Ancient and Noble" my mind filled in, "House of Black!!" but having Scottish lineage, the Order of the Thistle with their green velvet robes is now my fixation. Thank you so much for your incredibly thoughtful and well researched videos!!
Excellent presentation. One additional interesting note is that whereas the British government designates who will be named "regular" knights and dames, only the monarch designates knights and dames of the garter, at his or her discretion.
Thank you for the indept coverage of the three herdralic orders. It is strange that the Scotish order is the most picky! I think Princess Anne wanted to be her own woman! Princess Alexandria wore her garter sash under her Victoria mantle.
This was well presented and I learned so much. Part of me thinks that all this pomp doesn't belong in the modern age. The last 30 years have produced technology that catapults modern society so far ahead of most of the 20th century. Coronation robes and mantles of ancient orders look and sound so out of place. .... like a rolodex in an office or a typewriter. I do respect the past and, of course, tradition is important so as not to forget where we came from and who we are, at our core. It does, though, appear out of place to see the upper echelon of British society parade about in their overblown and anachronistic costumes while regular people struggle with inflation and rising fuel costs and costs of goods. Tradition might need to be modernized to reflect the current times and be relatable to everyday people so not to appear out of place.

While my response to your two final questions is Yes, Ms. Holliday, I also believe that the historical aspect of these Orders far outweighs the Good Old Boy/Girl aspect that some people think that they have. In Australia, we have the Order of Australia, which is usually at the end of somebody's name as O. A. M. (Order of Australia Medal). However, they're much more common than O. B. E.'s; my great grandfather was awarded one and another great uncle in law was awarded one by (then-prince) Charles.
Australians are also still eligible for admission to the Garter, Thistle and RVO as Australian Citizens, Sir Robert Menzies has been the only KT but 3 have been KGs, all being former Governors-General. RVO admissions for Australians happen almost every year but in very small numbers, mostly to staff at Government House, Canberra and each of the state and territories' Government Houses. I'm not a huge fan of the single order to recognise everyone but that's just the view of most people today. I think it would be far more suited to still appoint ADF officers to the Order of the Bath, diplomats to the Order of St Michael and St George. Viceregal officers and staff appointments to GCVO, K/DCVO and CVO more often would also be fitting for the work that they do in service of the King.
UK aside of course, of the remaining six kingdoms in Europe, five have a representative--Norway, Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden. Belgium doesn't because typically they are given during a state visit, and there hasn't been a state visit from the Belgians to the UK since 1963 when King Baudouin was still king. So Albert II is the only king to not have received one. I hope Philippe will have a state visit at some point so he can be given the honor.
Another future topic that could be discussed is the Order of the Golden Fleece and their current Royal members since on the Spanish side, there is several royals as Knights from other countries.
Joan of Kent was also the first Princess of Wales. The eldest son of Edward I was created the first Prince of Wales. He had been born a few days prior at Caernarfon. According to legend, Edward presented his newborn son as a royal who spoke no English. The Welsh nobles were objecting to having a sovereign who spoke no Welsh and who only spoke English. This was shortly after Edward had conquered the Welsh. Edward the second married Isabelle of France after he became king, thus he had no Princess when he was Prince of Wales. This is how I learned it anyway

what is the significance of the sash and how it is worn, left or right shoulder?
Joan of Kent was also the first Princess of Wales. The eldest son of Edward I was created the first Prince of Wales. He had been born a few days prior at Caernarfon. According to legend, Edward presented his newborn son as a royal who spoke no English. The Welsh nobles were objecting to having a sovereign who spoke no Welsh and who only spoke English. This was shortly after Edward had conquered the Welsh. Edward the second married Isabelle of France after he became king, thus he had no Princess when he was Prince of Wales. This is how I learned it anyway
it's just a show, it doesn't really affect us normal people... I supposed having these garments and insignia in the early days it's like having a BLUE TICK next to their names...
