    Not sure if it’s mentioned in the video, but one of the craziest things about this is that someone taking photos on the plane happened to snap a photo exactly at impact within mere milliseconds-perhaps as little as 1 millisecond-of the plane blowing up. You can see the plane’s fuel splashed all over the windows which hadn’t ignited yet.

    I'm a New Zealander and I remember even back in the 90s people were still talking about this disaster. Don't hear a lot about it nowadays but it had a huge impact on our tiny country.
    also lmao we don't have a Queen, the "Queen of New Zealand" was actually just the Queen of Britain. Commonwealth things.

      Yeah I learned the queen thing as I was researching into “the queen of New Zealand” I was getting annoyed because Elizabeth just KEPT SHOWING up and I thought my computer was broken. Turns out the Elizabeth is involved just a monarch political thing.

    • @ats-3693

      @@spdsytI mean it's not completely untrue to say that Queen Elizabeth was Queen of New Zealand.
      New Zealand is a self Governed British commonwealth country, the official head of State of New Zealand and all the other British Commonwealth countries is the ruling Monarch of England who is represented by the Govenor General in New Zealand, so officially Queen Elizabeth was the Queen of New Zealand just as King Charles is the King of New Zealand now, but this is all largely just traditional now and nobody in New Zealand would say that King Charles is King of New Zealand.

    Air new zealand provided the wrong flight coordinates and immediately started covering up their mistake when they realised. This was before the wreckage was even found. They had ppl on the ice by the morning to steal the flight logs and sent others to break in to Collins's house to steal his records.
    The pilots were blamed but it was 100% the fault of the airline. It was an absolute disgrace

      Although it may seem its the airlines fault, the Captain has 100% full authority to change any course or turn back around if unsure of their current position so yea its ultimately the pilots fault on this one. RIP.

    • @RobBremner
      @RobBremner 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Fake rumours. The brochure for the flights had that they would be flying to Mt Erebus at 16,000 ft, and only if visibility was suitable would descend for a close look at the mountain. I have seen photos taken by a passenger on the previous flight looking out the window at the side of Erebus only a few hundred metres away, and was told they flew right round the mountain at that distance and altitude. That flight had to alter course to go to the mountain, that is why the heading was changed. The whole purpose of the flight was a scenic trip, and Mount Erebus was the first part of it!.

  • @gobysky
    @gobysky 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +109

    There’s a something in airline training that is heavily emphasized these days and was one of the failures in this accident. It’s called CRM an acronym for Crew Resource Management. When the flight engineer was concerned about their position in respect to the terrain the Captain should have taken immediate action and verified his concerns. Making assumptions mingled with complacency in aircraft is deadly.

    When the aircraft failed to communicate back to base, it was originally thought it had ditched in the Southern Ocean, south of NZ.
    Awaruaradio, in the south of the South Island, was requested to monitor the aviation comms frequencies. This was done for several hours during the afternoon of the crash day. Later that afternoon we* heard a search aircraft report sighting a long dark smear of wreckage, clearly visible against the white snow of Mount Erebus. It was a very sobering experience. We were amongst the first people in NZ to know of the crash site.
    *I was a radio operator at the NZPO's marine coast radio station ZLB. I was listening to the search aircraft's first report.

    Something else that might not be obvious but at 1500 feet and in white out conditions toward Mt. Erebus the outline of the bay on front of the mountain is a miniature of the outline of McMurdo sound under normal conditions- there’s a coast to the right, the mountain in front is obscured; the bay in front of it looks similar to the far reach of the sound. This is why the passenger photo the presenter noted is an important data point- it’s a view from the right side of the airplane showing a “coast” but that actually the side of the smaller bay heading toward the mountain. It was an unfortunate coincidence that with the mountain obscured the inlet bay bore a superficial resemblance to the sound. If you look at the overlays it definitely shows the pilots thought so too, as they did their ovals and turns thinking they knew where they were, in the middle of McMurdo sound.

    I remember a bunch of crashes from this era but not this one. Canary Islands and something like 475 dead in1977 comes to mind. The other was a the crash into Potomac River near the Jefferson Monument.

    New Zealand aviation enthusiasts shudder whenever they see photos of ZK-NZP (the plane involved). In fact, the registration has been left unused since.

    i had a teacher who witnessed the plane before it crashed though i’m not sure how far before, he was a mechanic, i think at new zealand’s antarctic base. he was very young, not long turned 18 i believe. even all these years later he still couldn’t talk about it, it was too traumatising for him.

      Theres no possible way anyone from Scott or McMurdo base could have seen the plane that day, it was on the other side of Mt Erebus, about 40 + km away from the bases, it never came near the bases. If he saw it at all, it would have been as it was leaving Auckland airport.
