These three tracks narrate the story of the same love triangle from the perspectives of each of the characters involved, at different times in their lives. "Betty" is the tale from the perspective of the cheating boyfriend James, who had a "summer fling" with the unnamed female narrator of "August", and debates "show[ing] up at her party" to reconcile with her. James apologizes about his past mistakes but does not fully own up to them, citing his agoraphobia and Betty's "wandering eye" as excuses. James has lost the love of his life basically and doesn't understand how to get it back. This is a song that I wrote from the perspective of a 17-year-old boy. Over the course of the summer, James and Augustine grow more distant despite Augustine still feeling real love for James. When school starts again for senior year, James breaks up with Augustine and tries to get back together with betty, but he then finds out that Betty knows because Inez told her. Betty breaks up with James and James is left heartbroken. James constantly tries to get Betty back but Betty is constantly rejecting him, even going so far as to change her homeroom class so she doesn't see him. Eventually sometime during senior year Betty is having a party as it's established she's very outgoing and loves crowds, James gets the courage to show up and ask for her forgiveness, simultaneously taking the blame and rejecting it (you can't believe a word she says most times but this time it was true, I'm only 17 I don't know anything). It's unclear if Betty takes him back but we can easily assume she didn't. Augustine is left heartbroken after being used as a rebound for a relationship James was still in, Betty is heartbroken because she was cheated on, and James is heartbroken because he was rejected. Each character starts their part of the story by making a mistake that becomes an even greater mistake, dancing with another boy when your boyfriend is already socially anxious, hitting on someone you know is in a relationship, and cheating on your girlfriend. But over the course of the story each character is left with broken hearts and a love triangle that can't be fixed.

Taylor is one year older than me, so by the time she wrote, recorded, and released her songs, they hit me at the exact right time in my life. I’ve been a fan since the first time I heard “Tim McGraw” on the radio when I was 15. I legitimately played “22” on repeat for half a year, when I turned 22. I will be 30 this year and this album makes me feel so nostalgic for my teen years, and bittersweet about my twenties that are almost over. Thank you, Taylor.
@@alaaye5237 ohhhh nvm i get it sooo James cheated on Betty with August and August actually loved James but James doesn’t love her?? Wow lol what she actually thought a relationship like this was gonna last?? Pls tell me i got it right i can be slow sometimes
would someone as unaware as James even know what he doesn't know? "I'm only 17, I don't know anything." Even the awareness of his youth and knowing that he doesn't know anything would be too perceptive for him.
Amazing how she wrote this song on the perspective of a 17-year old, with the sound of a 17-year old Taylor Swift. She even made her voice a bit more pitchy to sound like her younger self.
Inez is the friend we all need. She's the only one who told Betty about the rumors going around. Of course James tries to throw her under the bus by saying 'You cant believe a thing she says, most times.' Yeah I'd try to discredit the person who exposed my bad behavior too if I was James.
Okay so there's a line in Cardigan that goes "Peter losing Wendy", and when I was listening to these songs I was thinking about how Betty seems way more grown up than James, how she has a more mature perspective on their relationship. WELL the reason Peter lost Wendy was because Wendy grew up and moved on. _Betty is like Wendy cause she did the same I_-
I just realized betty is the only song where the characters names are mentioned, notice how James doesn't mention august girl name, maybe to symbolize she didn't mean anything to him
unfortunate shes not releasing a 10 min version of any song ever, she only did with all too well because the music was 10 minutes long originally and because the fans asked for the original version
I feel like Augustine was so in love with James when she said, "James, get in. Let's drive." because of how soft Taylor's voice turned into. And I'm so hurt for her :((
She’s said this is a visual album.. she is telling a story and she made a trilogy called “the trilogy of love” which means that in 3 songs she talks about the same love story by 3 different point of view. The theme of this album is teenage love
The fact that he keeps dreaming about seeing Betty again and saying "if I showed up at your party", but when he finally says "I showed up at your party" it's just COMPLETE silence for a while is just mind blowing to me.
I listened to “fifteen” on repeat on my fifteenth birthday and now my seventeenth birthday is in a couple days and the lyrics “I’m only seventeen, I don’t know anything” feel so comforting
I did the same when i was fifteen, next year I'll do it with this song and few years later with 22 of red album.... Taylor's got a record of everything for us.. ♥️

@Firuze Pala it talks about the story of three characters Betty, James and Inez who are 17 and not herself. Cardigan and August also extended the lore of this song by providing perspectives of the other characters.
I absolutely love how August, Betty and cardigan link together. Each song offers an insight into the charectars, and I can't help feel a little sorry for all of them. James is socially awkward and immature, Betty knows this and chooses to dance with another boy. As a result James is jealous and starts a summer fling with August, who is infatuated with James and is aware he is in a relationship. All the charectars are flawed and yet this makes for such an interesting dynamic, and might I add absolute masterpieces :))
This right here is the reason why I couldn't find this song. I'd always search up "cardigan" for the lyrics instead of "car again" and always thought the song I was looking for was Cardigan instead of Betty
No James. You can't just toy with other people's feelings like an old cardigan under someone's bed you can easily discard whenever you don't feel like wearing. No James. Just. No.
Congratulations! I hope you enjoy staying here and enjoying her music. Just to remind you that her brand new album called 'The Tortured Poets Department' is gonna release on April 19, 2024. So, mark your calender, swiftie!
Eh it's more folkish music which makes it funny that she called it folklore, also some of the songs I believe are "Folklore" about people, if you listen closely to some songs it doesn't fully make sense to all be about Taylor, just some of them, not all of them tbh .
So let me get this straight. James cheated on Betty with August and they were together for the whole summer but he "dreamed of her all summer long" THE AUDACITY-
Taylor Swift's song "Betty" evokes a sense of nostalgia within me, possibly due to its country music roots. It's like a musical time machine, taking me back to the days when Taylor's music had that delightful country twang, and it conjures memories of my idyllic childhood.
in this song, james said that he's only seventeen and he didn't know anything. but in cardigan, betty said "when you were young, they assume you know nothing. i knew everything when i was young". implying that betty actually understands that there really is no excuse to cheating, even though she still wants james back
@@namira6703 yes he says the worst thing that he ever did was cheating on her. And he says he misses her. And that what he did with the other girl was just a summer thing.
And wasnt as young as Harry. Harry was the teen, which is why she said she refers to it at a teenage love triangle, doesnt say it is one. She always says life is like highschool.
@@MoonDancerArt Why do people assume that though, this is the case though? She also likens Harry to James Dean. So she had the name James and was like now I need two fictional names and since she knows another James thenshe used the other two.
You can feel the difference in the maturity level of Betty and James. Betty despite her age not only understand but accepts her situation and makes the best of what she was dealt with (" when you're young they assume you know nothing). While James makes excuses and blames his age and Augustine "a figment of his worst intention" for his action ("I'm only 17 I don' know anything").
Well true, but also Taylor said the songs are apparently supposed to be at different times in the characters lives. This song clearly shows James is 17 and in high school, while Cardigan could be from years later, when Betty's older. That would explain the maturity level differences.
Actually, the betty song is from betty's perspective but it was told from future pov. after many years she recalls what she was put through. taylor said it herself
I never thought about it. But the video fits the song so well. James is having all this internal dialogue anywhere anytime. Just walking on a random sidewalk and he thinks about the girl he likes.
normally i don't like love triangles because of the way they're usually done but i'm making an exception for the triangle in folklore -- you can feel deep inside what james and betty felt during the triangle and see why they've done things during it and how they've dealt with the triangle, even if you agree with them or not. taylor's beautiful storytelling makes it that the whole story is fleshed out and understood by its listeners, which is hard to come across in the music industry. i actually think that the triangle is one of the main reasons why i love folklore so much
That James cheated on Betty the whole summer. Not once but WHOLE SUMMER!! He was completely aware what he was doing but he continue to do that. How he expect Betty to forgive him? And he tried to justify by blaming on Betty by saying " plus I saw you dance with him". What douche Lmao
@@theacabuang7488 I would forgive him if he made a mistake but cheating is not a mistake. He was absolutely in his sense and continuously keep on cheating on Betty and then also tried to blame it on Betty. He also played with that August girl
@@dontcare2290 tbh though, i think forgiving is better because that's when i'll finally be able to let go of the situation and i when won't let it burden me anymore. also, forgiving doesn't necessarily mean being "okay" with what the person did. it just means being indifferent and accepting that what happened was what happened, and there's nothing you can do to change that, so it's better to leave it in the past.
Actually, it's easy to think that he's just being childish because he's just 17,it's easy to get angry and the opportunity to cheat and maybe make her angry came so he went with it.
the word 'folklore' means stories and memories passed down by mouth. i think this album is not at all about one person like her albums usually are. this album has songs about her current boyfriend, old boyfriends, current friends, old friends, lots of memories from her childhood, more recent memories, songs about people/events that never happened, and some songs about herself. it's her memories, her life, her stories, her love, her dreams, and it's folklore. she's passing down her memories to us so they can live on, or be put to rest. the album is called folklore because every song is quite literally folklore.
In the beginnig of the song, she mentions that James was able to see Betty's room earlier. Now i can't stop thinking that Betty and James were the teenagers in You Belong With Me music video.
Taylor is really a genius lyricist and storyteller like WOW HER MIND.... the fact that she started the song with “Betty, I won’t make assumptions about why you switched your homeroom but I think it’s ‘cause of me” is simply brilliant because it already gave us a glimpse of what kind of person James is - someone who can’t “walk the talk”, keeps on giving contradicting statements and mixed signals. As the song progresses, it’s getting even clearer with lines such as “I’m only 17, I don’t know anything”, “Those days turned into nights slept next to her, but I dreamt of you all summer long”. Plus another thing is the comparison with Inez who got this unreliable reputation but at that point, between her and James, she was the one who’s telling the truth. It really helps the listeners realize how James really lost his integrity in here. We know that it’s just bad but it reminds us that we also did terrible things in the past just in different situations. This just perfectly captures the vulnerability of young love, how we all made mistakes when we were young, how we regretted it and how we make/made up for it - all that in ONE SONG how CLEVER. Mad respect to Taylor, Joe, Aaron, Jack and her whole team
@@lalalooloo maybe once, but she hates Karlie now. Supposedly she caught her blabbing to everyone something she had told her in private. "When the words of a sister/ comes back in whispers to prove she was not/ in fact what she seems, not a twin from your dreams/ she's a crook who was caught" is about KK in "It's Time to Go"
@Erfan not really. He says he hummed a few lines. She had a team, and although some were written by Ms Swift alone, they deserve credit for this extraordinary album.
I would like to submit my theory that the Teenage Love Triangle songs are: The 1, Illicit Affairs, and Betty Betty is the guy (James) singing about how he hopes Betty will take him back after his unfaithful summer. The 1 is Betty saying nope but it could’ve been nice if we’d worked out (she’s reminiscing later). And then Illicit Affairs is the girl James cheated with reflecting on how sneaking around with James went/how she was left hurt by it. But I’ve only listened to the album once all the way through so far, so perhaps my theory will change upon more research 🧐
Joe Alwyn is actually credited with co writing this song with her (under the pseudonym William Bowery) and some others as well. So, thank Joe for being a very talented writer/poet as well as one of Taylor Swift’s all time greatest muses. We love you Joe! 😂❤
So "betty" is all about james' pov and "cardigan" is about betty's and "august" is the perspective of james's other girl . It's a love triangle and Taylor just wrote a song about each of their point of views. She is not only a queen, she is a genius and that's on PERIODT.
the way she was able to connect the songs august, betty and cardigan with the respective characters, augustine, james and betty, through a whole painful love story is exactly what makes her an artist to its finest.
"standing in your cardigan" me who just listened to cardigan earlier: IT'S BETTY'S CARDIGAN?????????? WHO TF IS BETTY, WHO TF IS JAMES, WHICH PERSPECTIVE IS THIS SONG

This isn't her original genre. She started out country. This album is very Indie Pop.
Taylor deserves a separate Grammy for rhyming cardigan with car again .
Folklore deserves grammy

Taylor Swift's song "Betty" evokes a sense of nostalgia within me, possibly due to its country music roots. It's like a musical time machine, taking me back to the days when Taylor's music had that delightful country twang, and it conjures memories of my idyllic childhood.

I think James' love was so deep his presumption was that Betty felt the same and he should show up at the party.
in this song, james said that he's only seventeen and he didn't know anything. but in cardigan, betty said "when you were young, they assume you know nothing. i knew everything when i was young". implying that betty actually understands that there really is no excuse to cheating, even though she still wants james back

Actually, the betty song is from betty's perspective but it was told from future pov. after many years she recalls what she was put through. taylor said it herself

normally i don't like love triangles because of the way they're usually done but i'm making an exception for the triangle in folklore -- you can feel deep inside what james and betty felt during the triangle and see why they've done things during it and how they've dealt with the triangle, even if you agree with them or not. taylor's beautiful storytelling makes it that the whole story is fleshed out and understood by its listeners, which is hard to come across in the music industry. i actually think that the triangle is one of the main reasons why i love folklore so much
What abt august lol
That James cheated on Betty the whole summer. Not once but WHOLE SUMMER!!
He was completely aware what he was doing but he continue to do that. How he expect Betty to forgive him? And he tried to justify by blaming on Betty by saying " plus I saw you dance with him". What douche Lmao
and he led "august" girl on
i'd forgive for what he did but i don't think i can give him a second chance when it comes to having a relationship with him again.

Omg
Lol

I would like to submit my theory that the Teenage Love Triangle songs are: The 1, Illicit Affairs, and Betty
Betty is the guy (James) singing about how he hopes Betty will take him back after his unfaithful summer. The 1 is Betty saying nope but it could’ve been nice if we’d worked out (she’s reminiscing later). And then Illicit Affairs is the girl James cheated with reflecting on how sneaking around with James went/how she was left hurt by it.
But I’ve only listened to the album once all the way through so far, so perhaps my theory will change upon more research 🧐
i thought that august was about them having the affair over summer, i have no idea tho
Teenagers can't have "illicit affairs"... that's one of the luxuries of youth.

@@monikacrljen6827 We know this is Betty. "No, its Becky" is a Taylor Swift meme
it's summer and I'm 17 this year..I just remembered this song and came here to listen.a beautiful masterpiece.
2018: “Srry Taylor can’t come to the phone right now”
2020: one second let me get Taylor
This album isn’t old Taylor is a new chapter in her life like every album
*2017
@@jesusdelossantos9903 it's not the old Taylor but she brings what I personally miss about her music
You mean the OLD TAYLOR*
Guys calm down!
Taylor Never Left :>
this should become a movie. I'm already dying to know more about betty, James and the girl from August PLEASE NETFLIX
Netflix would choose Noah Centineo to play James and add random gay character with no other personality and ruin the song :(
I hope no one ends up together in the end coz that's the reality of life
@@jameswei1118 but i would want Betty and James together :(
My thoughts exactly. Betty would end up w the new guy, James heartbroken.
when betty gets a gf PERIODTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
"standing in your cardigan"
me who just listened to cardigan earlier: IT'S BETTY'S CARDIGAN?????????? WHO TF IS BETTY, WHO TF IS JAMES, WHICH PERSPECTIVE IS THIS SONG
ruthleeesss Taylor Swift is named after James Taylor and he has a wife named Elizabeth aka Betty. Most people think this is what it’s about. Sadly not an LGBTQ thing.
betty is also the name of joe alwyn's mom and he co-wrote this song with the pseldonym William Bowery. So cute ❤
@@maybeary225 Joe alwyn's mom is a betty and he co-wrote tjis song
its a fictional story. a teenage story between betty, james and another woman and you can get the full story by listening to betty, cardigan and august
Archita Gautam does illicit affairs count?
*i hope she does a full circle moment doing a country album again! this song just proves she always has country in her even after so many years of being in the pop genre*
Taylor Swift self-titled debut (taylor’s version), you’re our only hope 💚
