To those who don't know, this song's written about the life and rumors of the former owner of one of Taylor's mansion (Rebekah Harkness). Taylor absolutely love the woman and she asked for the family's consent before writing and including this in her album.

Maybe I feel like this because I can understand modern English better. maybe it's my fault but I like Taylor's writing style better
"They say she was seen on occasion pacing the rocks and staring out at the midnight sea" Idk why but this line gives me chills. It conjures up an image of a woman shunned by the society and she's pacing along the shore all by herself not caring about the world.
I honestly feel like this is one of the best songs she has ever written. this is like an entire blockbuster movie in four minutes. the storytelling is incredible
I agree. This song Taylor wrote and sang and participated in by purchasing this Mansion with finances she earned through her talents as a singer and songwriter causes me to take "Hats Off" to her. A historical blockbuster of a song.
"And nothing provokes more than the sight of a woman enjoying herself," Marmee. Little Women, 1994 I don't know, this song just made me think of that line.
The fact that Taylor wrote about her house and the previous owners tells a lot about her as a person. In my opinion, she's the kind of person who thinks a lot about who were the owners/stayed in the house before her, what were their stories, what did neighbors think of them, how does Taylor herself stand in comparison to them etc. And to me, this is really deep.

This is about Rebekah Harkness, who was married to the heir to the Standard Oil fortune. Taylor owns her former "Holiday House" in Rhodes Island. Taylor used to have her Fourth of July parties there. So many parallels between their lives. Thank you so much, Taylor, for telling her and your story so beautifully.

Song reminds me of my aunt. She married young to a rich guy. Had 2 kids. At 32 she went "crazy", they said. Her husband was cheating on her and shame on her for not accepring that. She did a lot of wild, fun, improper things. She gor a new car and a new job. She moved away from that old town shamelessly. She had a marvelous time ruining everything. People still talk about her. She dyed her hair red at 40 years old! She rocks in it by the way.
“the last great american dynasty” is about the story of Rebekah Harkness, a patron of the arts, and founder of the Rebekah Harkness Foundation. In 2013, she bought a Rhode island mansion once owned by Rebekah Harkness. The mansion is known as “Holiday House.” She makes subtle comparison between herself and Rebekah Harkness in the song. She likens her parties to the bevy of famous composers and dancer that once frequented Holiday house in Harkness' days. Also similar to Taylor Swift, Rebekah Harkness was often a target of harsh criticism from the tabloids after inherating a huge amount of money from her husband Bill

this song almost makes me cry every time because it makes me nostalgic for something i never even lived, and when taylor says "and then it was bought by me" wow
Feeling guilty as I slept on folklore when it was released. I was basically into pop music back then. Thanks to the Eras Tour that I have come to know about the perfection of this album. This is literally Taylor's best album. She showed her poetical and lyrical skills here. Been listening to it on repeat. Whoever is also listening, has a great taste in music. Peace.
I can imagine the neighboors hating on her and the dog liking her and moving its tail. And then she giving it treats to come inside her house to dye it 😂
lmao, two poodles one green one bright pink and the neighbour looking horrified as he was watering his plants next to a "dogs lost" sign as she catwalks down to his house in a ridiculous glittering pink dress with a thin fur scarf that's how I imagined it!
What's truly amazing is that this is the true story of Rebekah Harkness and her antics that people thought were so outlandish at the time and her home there in Rhode Island that Taylor now owns for her own 'outlandish' behavior! Awesome tribute to a cultured woman not unlike herself!❤
Taylor: "There goes the loudest woman this town has ever seen." Also Taylor: "Was I loud? In my own house that I bought with the songs that I wrote about my own life?"

As some people have already noted, this song is based on Taylor Swift's house in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. I walked by there once on vacation, and she had signs around the house that read "I knew you were trouble when you walked in - no trespassing."
As I hear “a marvelous time ruining everything” it reminds me of my own journey of forgetting everything that had been taught me as a little girl and everything that they told me I was and building my own belief system now 🙏❤️
This is all a true story - Taylor bought a house in Rhode Island called "Holiday House" from a woman, Rebekah Harkness, who married an oil magnate and was the center of the town's gossip/
I think I know why all of the song titles of this album are lowercase. It's because the album is like a book, each song is a chapter, and each line is a sentence. The titles are just words from within the sentences, so it makes sense that they are lowercase.
The Last Great American Dynasty- gives me biking on a beach during sunrise alone vibes. Exile- gives me walking slowly through a dark forest vibes. Seven- gives me climbing on a tree during sunset vibes. The Lakes- gives me walking through a meadow with a lake vibes. Essentially that’s what lyrics are, a songwriter is a poet who weaves in musical accompaniment to create art
Yeah, her lyric skills are from another planet
Exactly! This album made me like her and admire her literary skills. Im a poet and song writer too, she deserves respect! 😊
I still can’t believe this is real - Taylor really did drop an entire album. Time to listen through the whole thing 💕
the one and only 😍😍
I know right
Yesss!!
Doing this too!!
*same*
Whatever condition it is, Taylor can never make bad music. Signs of a legend
FACTS
Exactly
I'm not sure your mentally stable...
Truth
Legend status: ACTIVATED
*the level of storytelling is extremely literature-esque & i can just feel goosebumps from the way she tells the tale of a woman and her seemingly carefree life in this holiday house with such a melancholic melody*
Taylor is like a movie that you can't skip a second of it
A beautiful, inspiring movie.
Romina Nr some movie. I just skipped a lil tho.
Wow you nailed it @ROMINA

When you are still haven't move on to "lover" and here comes "folklore"... Oh taylor.
I feel the same
i feel you...
@@emersonlima9725 , and still waiting for cruel summer music video...
Yeah same
I can’t move on from “Lover”... Cruel summer and Cornelia Street should have been singles
this song almost makes me cry every time because it makes me nostalgic for something i never even lived, and when taylor says "and then it was bought by me" wow
Peace.
Same ❤❤❤
Just when we thought 2020 was a bad year, Taylor gave us this masterpiece. Love from Mexico. ❤️ I love you Taylor Swift.

"She stole his dog and dyed it key lime green"
Now THAT would be interesting to see in a music video
I can imagine the neighboors hating on her and the dog liking her and moving its tail. And then she giving it treats to come inside her house to dye it 😂
lmao, two poodles one green one bright pink and the neighbour looking horrified as he was watering his plants next to a "dogs lost" sign as she catwalks down to his house in a ridiculous glittering pink dress with a thin fur scarf that's how I imagined it!
lol
Reminds me of minecraft dog..
Haha it’s based on a true story too
I wish she would write a romance novel. I would buy it in a heartbeat, she’s such a great writer.
I second that.
I feel like her albums are her greatest romance novel! But I totally would buy it too that’s an awesome idea ❤️
Wish I met a girl who listend to ts
What's truly amazing is that this is the true story of Rebekah Harkness and her antics that people thought were so outlandish at the time and her home there in Rhode Island that Taylor now owns for her own 'outlandish' behavior! Awesome tribute to a cultured woman not unlike herself!❤
Taylor: "There goes the loudest woman this town has ever seen."
Also Taylor: "Was I loud? In my own house that I bought with the songs that I wrote about my own life?"
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Miss Americana!
@@lilylescarbeau5019 Miss Americana it is!💜
😂😂😂 She is amazin
that part of the movie was so powerful
SHE REALLY DECIDED TO JUST... GIVE US A WHOLE ALBUM HUH
Yeah! Just like what she did in 'Lover' era.
And, i am living for it.
We love you, Tay!!!
Taylor Swift literally wrote a song about her own house. I can’t even describe myself with one word
Same I am with you....lol
You are beautiful dear
lolz!!!
Here's you in one word: indescribable
Nothing truer has ever been spoken
"Free of women with madness, their men and bad habits", the most beautifully offensive lyric I've ever heard.
This feels like the old Taylor when she was way younger and didn't know she'd ever make reputation album
I think she’s a true romantic and will always go back to this place with her music. We can only pray. ❤️
Agreed love she is back to her roots of music...
reputation haters are ao annoying, do you even know what the album is about and how important it is as a statement???
@@superego7533 Definitely. Its the point where she proved Cancellation doesnt exist. Pls search for exile by Taylor Swift but you're driving in the rain to see my edit!!!

1. Taylor Swift - The Country Girl
2. Fearless - The Princess
3. Speak Now - The Teenage Girl
4. Red - A Woman In Love
5. 1989 - The Party Girl
6. Reputation - Bad Girl

She is one of the only singers ( the best ) that can sing her songs with same pitch but always make them unique
I wouldn’t say the ONLY. It’s fairly common modern music practice. But by far she brings an air to the style not found with anyone else
The most interesting and well thought out chord progressions out of the bunch of popular pop artists (also lyrics anyone?!?!?!? Unmatched in the modern day pop scene)
She is truly saving the music of nowadays
Lana del ray
Yep. I realized that when I played her songs on guitar. I can use one set of chords with her bunch of songs, just different tempo and message 😍😍😍
reputation : the old taylor cant come to the phone right now
folklore : I'll put you through
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FOR REAL
FREAKING THIS!!!!✨
HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA L OL
YEP YEP!!
As some people have already noted, this song is based on Taylor Swift's house in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. I walked by there once on vacation, and she had signs around the house that read "I knew you were trouble when you walked in - no trespassing."
hahahha omg I love that
That is awesome!
As I hear “a marvelous time ruining everything” it reminds me of my own journey of forgetting everything that had been taught me as a little girl and everything that they told me I was and building my own belief system now 🙏❤️
I can’t believe she wrote a song about her Rhode Island home
I can. I think she's officially an Ocean State transplant. Expect to see her play at Newport.
She should also write a song about the apartment of the old lady she bought from and kicked out, just so she could have a whole block to herself
@@arcticassistant9909 What? When did that happen?
Arctic Assistant how can someone buy and force someone out of their apartment? If you buy something it’s yours.
It deserved!!
It looks like taylor herself is standing in her Rhode island home, taking this pic.
She 1000% is
This is all a true story - Taylor bought a house in Rhode Island called "Holiday House" from a woman, Rebekah Harkness, who married an oil magnate and was the center of the town's gossip/
I think that might be the same Harkness that had the mansion in New London/Waterford?
I think it was taken by her
SHE IS
Swifties: We need a new single!
Taylor Swift: Hold my cardigan.

So unapologetic. I love that line so much.
when they said Taylor was the queen of story telling, they were talking about this album
Folklore is storytelling
Who said this?
@@MrLasveguinhas everyone
Yesss
Periodt.
I think I know why all of the song titles of this album are lowercase. It's because the album is like a book, each song is a chapter, and each line is a sentence. The titles are just words from within the sentences, so it makes sense that they are lowercase.
or contemporary poetry
what about betty?
Wow you realize and think about all that and I didnt even realize they were all in lowercase
The all lowercase thing also reminds me of e.e.cummings though :3 but I love your interpretation!

@@raashid9196 making 1 song is not easy
don't compare yourself to TS. That's not very productive.
The fact that this song was inspired by Rebekah from her Rhode Island apartment and finding her folklore when the pandemic hits is brilliant in a way only Taylor could do it
Taylor builds better bridges then any engineer could ever
Underrated comment
Me,an engineer agree with your comment
The bridge to mirrorball 😭
Literally✨
Can someone explain this comment to me, or what the song is about please? X
Taylor's my favourite storyteller
Also the best storyteller
Like okay, I get why this may not be everyone’s favorite, BUT “who knows if I never showed up what could’ve been” is one of her deepest and most philosophical lyrics ever and it sends me on an introspective trip other songwriters would NEVER!
How many people have the talent to take a real estate purchase and turn it into a heartfelt piece of poetry? My favorite from her. And I’m an old Metalhead. Get out and vote!
She should be REALLY making Indie songs more often.
She's one of the most recognized artists if not the most recognized artist in this current time. With a huge label and an insane amount of money..I don't think she could make an indie song if she wanted to. This is just pop music?
@@camic7324 This isnt pop honestly. This is more alt/indie/folk music. Maybe a twinge of pop but I wouldnt call this pop.
@@jer4991 Pop music is POPular music there are few things more popular than Swift.
@@camic7324 The meaning of pop music has changed over the years, I am talking about heavy synths, inorganic instrumentals, etc.
@@jer4991 What is popular might have changed but pop music is pop music regardless of the subgenre. I would say with the number of views this got in one day and its intended audience it is pop music. Indie music is music the is not as well known and is distributed through an INDI-pendant label.
I can’t believe this is a real story between two actual people and Taylor turned it into a bop. Gigis fav story

@@daniamazly4692 and cardigan was about "james" betty's lover. from betty's perspective. while "august" was from the perspective of the girl who james had an affair while in a relationship with betty. "exile" was betty and james arguing about their relationship
ilomilo * THATS SO COOL I LOVE TAYLOR SM
Taylor: Not a lot going on at the moment
Also Taylor: Releases an entire album
I wonder if someday Taylor would be honoured with a literary award for portraying women!!!
If folklore & evermore are sisters
the last great american dynasty & long story short are sisters too
And Epiphany with gold Rush
peace and happiness are too
All too well and champagnes problems are related too
Red could be Evermore's cousin
And willow and cardigan have definitely the same energy!
